Met a really cute shifter alkidike girl. She was looking for her father.. found a Radaku cub instead. She's gonna train it. I admire her dream and drive to acheive it. I have no real goal of my own...

Solo Dye Hunting

After his visit with Biroki, Rayolun got to thinking on about his dyes. Perhaps he should go check out some of those old ruins deep inside the jungle. Something that responded to the moon like the shifters… maybe he could turn it into a dye to help him camouflage himself and not have to change it every dawn and dusk. Sitting up, he stretched. Sounds like something to do! He thought with a smile as he began to loosen his muscles after his mid morning nap. Gerrarden’s gonna be pissed I didn’t bring him with me! But it’d take most of the day to get to his village and then a whole nother day to get to the ruin…. He shook his head with a smile, and Ger’s probably not good at the whole stealthy movement like I am. I’d need to teach him that first otherwise he’d alert all the prey and predators!

Lithely leaping down to a lower branch, Rayolun grinned. Sneaking through the trees was something he loved almost as much as hunting. Maybe I can find a small critter for Lassara as well! Humming softly at that thought, Rayolun headed off into the jungle, blending in seamlessly to the jungle’s shadowed canopy. This is a nice change, I have people to think about and that, hopefully, think about me too! Rayolun was used to just wandering about the jungle on his own, meeting up with his uncle every now and then. Having friends his age was new and quite interesting. Especially since one was a quite attractive female! He slunk from shadow to shadow, a part of his mind always watching and on the alert for danger while the other parts thought about other things. Lassara was something he found very fascinating to think about; pretty, smart, and had a dream she was on her way to fulfilling. What dream do I have? He thought as he paused in a dappled shadow, his white paint against black skin melding into the surrounds as a large Radaku passed beneath him. She wants to be a tamer, but my dreams? He thought for a moment more before shaking his head and slinking off again. Never really had a dream. Just did my best to live from day to day. But maybe I should start looking out and doing more than just surviving…
Maybe I’ll start small. I’ll go and explore the surrounding areas and go to the edge of the jungle. But that’s more of a goal. It’s not a dream! Rayolun sighed. How does one go about getting a dream? This was certainly an elusive prey! He snorted with amusement at his thoughts. Dream hunting! How strange.. and yet it seems fun. Hunting for a dream to fulfill… A smile stretched his lips, such a fascinating prey to hunt indeed!

He stopped on a large branch and looked down at the ruins below him. The jungle had mostly reclaimed it, but the small flickering columns of golden light that made it down this far illuminated the old stone and metal work of a fallen people long gone. The air about it was still, nothing stirred around here. Slipping down to the ground, Rayolun crept to the ruins edge before stopping and listening. Nothing... strange. I should at least be able to hear some birds and insects.. but nothing sounded. No breeze stirred the leaves, no bird called out, no hum of insects; nothing. His eyes narrowing, Rayolun quickly climbed up the vine covered wall to peer over the edge. Something must live here, something dangerous that caused the other animals to stay away. He pulled out the small dagger he always carried on him. Not very dangerous, but enough to hold an animal at bay as he fled. Rayolun had no qualms about fleeing, being alive was much more important than the ‘courage and honor’ of standing and facing a foe. He had always been amused at the villagers and their insistence that true courage came from standing your ground and not running away. And yet, sometimes you must run to live. I would rather run and live than stay and die just for ‘honor’ and pride.

He carefully and quietly explored the ruin, his eyes never stopped looking about. All about him were strange ruined things. He wasn’t sure what they were, and he shifted one fallen piece of metal. It was in a square shape with faded yellow and black colors. He couldn’t make out what use it’d been. The strange shape on it must mean something but what he didn’t know. It was much too small to be a shield, too big to be a plate, and the shape was odd… Shrugging he moved on, slinking through the silent ruin looking for a plant that could be used as a dye. SInce I’m here I might as well look for what Biroki suggested! In the corner of one of the ruins rooms, hiding beneath a fallen column, was a dye plant he’d used once. He’d never seen it again ,but it’d made the best dyes! It’s pale teal vines softly clambered about the column as it’s berries, a deep blue, hung ripe for the picking. WIth a grin to himself, he quickly gathered up the berries, placing them in a special waterproof pouch that would hold in the juices if they squished. As he finished picking some of the leaves he heard something stirring inside the ruins. Quickly turning about, his ears pricked to catch any more sounds, Ray paused and waited. The sound came again, a snuffling sound followed by a thumping. Large and coming this way, Rayolun thought calmly. Guess it’s time to flee! He smiled, if Gerrarden was here he’d probably want to stay and see what it was, but not Rayolun. Curiosity was something only for those who had time and power. Maybe once I arm myself properly I can come back here, but not now, with only a small dagger to defend myself with! So, with a shrug, Rayolun slipped over the wall and left the ruin, happy with his dyes and knowing that he had a place with some potential new and dangerous beast to tell Gerrarden about. I’ll come back with him, and maybe find more berries to make dyes with!

As he leaves the Tournament and Stands area :: Solo : The Gift

As Rayolun lopped off away from the noisy stands and tournament area, he was hailed by a familiar voice. Stopping and looking over towards the voice he grinned when he saw his uncle. The tall and broad Shifter wore patched leather pants and had several prominent scars along his body. His short cropped Rayolu ran over to greet Trom with an enthusiastic hug. Trom accepted it with an embarrassed smile. He’d never been comfortable with visible displays of emotion or affection.

“Uncle, I didn’t know you’d come here, thought you’d avoid it!” Rayolun said with a smile. He knew his uncle was a quiet and solitary man.

“I would, but thought you might come since you’re about the age that men usually start wondering what’s out in the world.” Trom said with a small smile. His voice was deep and soft rumble, which suited a broad shoulder man like him.

Rayolun grinned.“It was fairly interesting. I saw a friend and got some practice in how to fight other people too.” He wondered if his uncle had seen that. It was interesting, and he was certain that the trident was what he’d end up with as his weapon eventually since it’d just sat in his hands just right and responded the way he wanted it too. It was certainly better than the javelins and lances he’d tried before with other hunters. Trom nodded with a smile.

“I saw you fight .You did good out there today. It seems that the trident is suited to you. Your father used a sword, which I was going to give to you, but since it seems that you are going the path of a Lancer, I thought that perhaps it’d be good if you had a trident of your own to practice with.” At this astonishingly long speech from his normally silent uncle, Trom turned and grabbed a simple yet sturdy trident from behind the tree he’d been waiting under. Rayolun gasped with delight. A trident? Sweet! He’d been wondering how he’d pay for one, it’d never occurred to him to ask his uncle for it, nor expect it as a gift.

“Y-you didn’t have to uncle! But... thanks!” Rayolun had a huge grin on his face as he held the gift in his hands and stammered out thanks. A trident of his own! It wasn’t fancy, but that was how he liked it. Something elegant in its simplicity and sturdy enough to last for years; just what his uncle would buy, and just what he wanted! Trom ruffled Rayolun’s hair.

“You’re old enough now, plus it’ll set my mind at ease knowing you have a good weapon by your side. That and with the war coming…” He frowned and shrugged. He disliked anything that had to do with a potential for lots of death. Hunting was okay… but war? That was senseless and he hated it. What made it worse was knowing his boy was going to be fighting.

Rayolun looked up and smiled sadly at his uncle. He knew that Trom didn’t want him there, but if an army came to invade, he’d defend his homeland. He didn’t realish the idea of killing another person either, but if it was him or the other guy? Rayolun knew what he’d do.

“Don’t worry uncle. I won’t do stupid things when the war comes. Ah, also. I’ve been thinking of going and exploring the outer areas for a while now. I’m thinking o heading to the coast of Jahaur now though. So that’s where I’ll be.” He changed the topic with a smile. He always liked to tell his uncle or a fellow hunter who knew Trom where he was headed when he let his normal hunting grounds. It was always a safe ting to do, plus it lessened the amount of worry Trom went through. Rayolun had always thought of Trom as his father and not an uncle. And anything to ease his ‘father’s’ mind Rayolun would do. He knew that he’d probably be a scout for whatever army his people called up. He was after all, a hunter, someone who knew the lay of land and could sneak about. Perhaps as a scout I can avoid the main fighting and killing. He knew that some people would consider it ‘cowardly’ to want to avoid the main fighting. But for Rayolun, he just didn’t want to cause that much pain and death. A simple life of a hunter was all he ever wanted and war ruined that. Hopefully Lasarra won’t think less of me, and hopefully Gerrarden doesn’t throw himself into the main fighting… though eager and enthusiastic as he is, he probably will. Rayolun shook his head, stupid war. Oh well, it wasn’t here yet, and he had things to do before then!

“Are you headed back to your main camp Uncle? I have some stuff I’ll need to grab from there.” Trom nodded and turned away, vanishing into the dusky gloom in a way that made Rayolun jealous. Guess he’s done with his long sentences! Rayolun smiled as he followed his uncle. He didn’t take offense at Trom’s silence or abrupt actions like others sometimes did. He just doesn’t like to talk is all, ‘sides, I can understand him just fine!

The trip back to the home camp took two days, most of which were spent in a silent hunt for food and certain healing herbs that Trom was gathering for the healers of the Shifter villages. Rayolun took the time to memorize what plants were what and their uses. He would probably need to know them later on after all. He also learned some techniques with his trident. Trom and him would do short sparring matches in the evening to get Rayolun comfortable with his new weapon. By the time they reached the camp he had grown up in, Ray felt like he knew what how to use his weapon. It’d take more practice to make it so that he was proficient, but he knew enough to use it to hunt and to fight with it.

Solo The Sea

Rayolun, after leaving the tournament, headed to the coast. The news that war was coming galvanized him into going out and seeing more of the world. I may be good in the jungle but what about elsewhere? He thought as he traveled through the jungle canopy, leaping agily from branch to branch. He was in his element in the trees, but knew that there were other types of terrain and that he should probably learn about them. But first, I’ll go explore the coast lines, I’ve always wondered what the sea looked like. Plus, he would be able to keep an eye out to see if he could spot forward scouts of this incoming army. In his hand he held a new trident in his hands.

Rayolun hefted the trident with a smile. The trident had been a gift from his uncle who had seen his fights in tournament. And now I have a weapon to hunt with… this will make things much easier! As always, Rayolun’s thoughts went first to hunting, fighting people was not something he automatically thought about. Though he did know that soon he’d be forced to fight and kill the invaders that were coming. Shaking that dark thought out of his mind, he paused and sniffed the air. It was different, more salty and wet. He grinned, all thoughts of war gone. The sea! Dropping down to the ground, Rayolun sped stealthily along the jungle floor He noticed immediately that the undergrowth began to thin out and the soil turned to a pale grainy sand as the jungle faded into sparse trees along a coastline.
He stopped and gazed in awe at the ocean. So huge! An awed smile on his face, he walked slowly out to the ocean until his feet were hit by the incoming tides. He had never seen something so empty yet so beautiful. If far surpassed the jungle in all ways to Rayolun. The tall dome of blue sky above him, the deep bowl of dark ocean in front: it was as if he’d been living blind till now and had just opened his eyes for the first time. The sounds, the scents, the sights, he couldn’t spend enough time to absorb it all! He wiggled his toes in the damp beach sand with a large smile. The pull of the tide drew him out into the ocean. The rest of the afternoon, Rayolun walked along the beach, watching and smiling. I wish I could bring Lasarra here! I’m sure she’d love this sight too! He thought as he bent to pick up a large conical shell. I wonder what lives out in the ocean other than fish? The conversation with his ‘brother’ Gerrarden before the tournament came back to echo in his mind. There were unknown creatures in the jungle.. but here in the ocean? THere were so much more! He wanted to see them, to discover the secrets that the ocean hid. But first, he thought. I need to learn to swim! And get a boat. Definitely need a boat!

For the next few weeks, Rayolun explored the coastlines, slowly teaching himself how to swim, learning how to fish, and what other things could be eaten. He’d tried many things: the seaweed that grew along the rockier parts of the coast, the odd creatures that had hard shells, the many fish that he saw and many more. It was a much different diet from the meat and fruit he had in the jungle, and he liked the change. The scents did linger on him though, so he knew that before he went to hunt in the near by woods and jungle he’d need to get rid of that scent unless he wanted to attract predators. But on the whole, he found that the sea was far more of a ‘home’ to him than the jungle had been. He hadn’t gotten attached to anything (other than a few people) in the jungle while here, he felt a connection with the sea.

And there was another like him who lived here; he’d found an old weathered shifter who lived farther down the coast line. The old man had given him the old boat that he no longer used in exchange for Rayolun’s services in fishing. So once a week, Rayolun would show up for conversation and deliver his fish and get the boat checked. Rayolun enjoyed those times, Frezian, the old sailor, had many stories and advice to pass on to Rayolun. Frezian also enjoyed the visits, and would often have some oddity from the sea to show Ray and how to use or eat it.
It was after one of these visits that Rayolun sailed his small boat out into the ocean when there were dark clouds on the horizon. He knew of storms and the sheer danger of being out in one, after all, he’d lived in a jungle all his life that had storm after storm! But the stories Frezian told of the storms at sea drew him out there despite the danger. He wanted to see the crashing waves, the lightning and clouds and see nothing but dark stormy seas! He’d left almost all his belongings back at Frezin’s hut since he didn’t want to lose any of them, but kept his belt and pouches. It was sheer habit nothing more that made him wear that out, he didn’t expect to find anything nor did he want to. All he wanted to see was a storm at sea!

Sitting in his boat as the waters began to toss and roll, Rayolun’s heart began to pound. There was a feeling in the air, the rumbles of the clouds above as they came rolling in that filled him with excitement. The sky, usually bright and light blue in the afternoon sun, darkened. The clouds, hanging dark and low in the sky, promised a thunderstorm. Already there were flashes and rumbles above him even as the sea began to heave, tossing Rayolun and his boat up and down. A grin stretched his face as he gripped the sides of the boat. It was certainly different and just what he wanted! Then the skies opened and a torrent of rain poured down. Visibility vanished, and Rayolun was suddenly surrounded by water, lighting and wind. His short cut hair plastered to his face, water streaming down his face, deafened by the thunder, half blinded by rain and lightning, Rayolun laughed. It was wild, untamed, loud, and so completely different from the jungles that Rayolun could do nothing except enjoy the experience, not caring that he could drown at any moment.

And then, dancing in the darkness, Rayolun saw many small lights, gently changing colors, coming towards him. The boat, tossing violently, crested a wave and crashed down amid the current of dancing lights. Rayolun was tossed out and splashed into the ocean. His eyes opened as he let his body be controlled by the ocean currents. The sounds of the storm was muted, and the waters all about him seemed calm and gentle despite the storm raging above. The lights were fish, small Menks that he’d seen before at a booth at the tournament. But these small beautiful fish had shiny scales that shone in ever shifting colors. His hands dived to his belt and grabbed an empty pouch. Carefully scooping two of the menks into the pouch, Rayolun began to swim towards the surface. Much as he wanted to stay beneath the waves and watch the pod of menk, he needed air. He gasped as he surfaced, the sounds and rain hitting him like a blow.

How he survived the following hour he never did figure out, but despite the towering waves, lightning, rain, and fierce wind, Rayolun eventually was washed back to shore. He sat on the beach, half in the water to make sure the menk survived, and watched the storm recede back to the sea. He smiled down at the squirming pouch with the special menks in them. What an afternoon! I shall have a tale to tell Gerrarden and Lasarra when I next meet them! I wonder if the menk will survive long enough for me to give it to Lasarra?

Solo Back into the jungle!

User ImageRayolun watched the leaf boy and his tribe head away into the jungle and shook his head. People! Though… the lads talk about his girl ad a gift for her helped to make Rayolun’s mind up about an idea he’d had for a while. It was time to head back and see that cute girl Lasarra and see how she was doing. He missed her, he realized. She was a bright smile and happy memory. I wonder if she thinks of me, he thought. I hope so. He turned and pushed the boat back out to sea; he would need to return the boat to Fezian for a while if he was headed in land. He smiled at the thought of seeing Lasarra again; and maybe I’ll stop by and see Gerraden as well to top it off. Though after I see Lasarra. That way I don’t get dragged into one of his ‘adventures.’ Rayolun shook his head in amusement at the though; his self-proclaimed brother was very enthusiastic in searching for things to do!

As he rowed the bat back along the coast, his eyes scanning the waters to keep an eye out for anything dangerous. He saw not one of the large flesh eating fish, but instead a soggy mess bobbing atop a wood in the waves. Curious, he turned the boat and rowed it over. As he got close, a wave came and rolled the boat… and caused the mess of something to fall off the spar into the water. Cursing under his breath, Rayolun pulled the oars into the boat and dove into the water. It had looked like and animal… and it was! He spotted the small creature as it sank and swam down to it, his eyes peeling to look around and make sure nothing dangerous was lurking in the dark blue waters. He grabbed the creature and swam back to the surface. As he surfaced, he gasped for air and hoisted the creature onto his shoulders to keep it out of the water so it wouldn’t drown... if it hadn’t already. He headed out with strong strokes back to his boat.

He tossed the soaking critter into the boat and hauled himself in carefully. Getting back into the boat was always difficult since you could end up capsizing it. After he got in, he looked at the creature, moving the fur out of the way so he could get a sense of where the stomach and lungs were so he could pump out the water.

It was... a roati? His eyebrow twitched upwards; what was a creature found in Zena doing washed out along the coast of Jahaur? He had heard about them, and seen a few when a fellow hunter had one, so he did know how to care for it.

First things first, pump the water out. Gentle pressure along the rib cage with the head pointed down to help drain the water. After a few times the small canine gave a cough and spat water out and started to look alive. It gave a coarse bark as it tried to stand. Rayloun picked it up and resettled it in his lap.

“You stay there,” he said, knowing that it couldn’t understand but maybe had learned a few commands or something. Which, apparently it had. At ‘stay’ it sat down and looked up at him.

“Good.. boy?” He murmured, unsure of the gender. Now even more reason to go see Lasarra! Not that I need any, he thought with a smile as he rowed back up the coast to Fezian’s shack.

Fezian, was waiting for him along the shore and looked questioningly at the roati in the boat as Rayolun dragged the boat up to the shore.

“Found it floating half drowned out at sea,” he shrugged and picked the small creature up. “I think I’ll need to brush him cause that fur looks disgusting.”

Fezian chuckled. “That it does. It eats meat by the way. Though since it’s hlf drowned, you’ll need to cut it up for him to eat.”

“Him?” Ray asked, curious as to how the older shifter knew.

“The shape. Males have a slight different build to them. Not much of one and difficult to tell with all that matted fur, but I get the feeling it’s male.”

That night, he took a long time to brush and clean the creature. His time with Lasarra had taught him patience with animals. Not that he needed it since this little roati was well trained already. And owned apparently. There was a collar about its neck. Pity, he thought, I wouldn’t have minded keeping him.
“You’ll have to cut the collar off,” Fezian said, “Those snarls would just cause more pain when untangling it. Besides. I think he comes from far away, so the owner shouldn’t mind…” His eyes twinkled as he said this.

Ray just smiled. Guess I’ll be keeping him.. and it’s not like the owner will be anywhere near here.. maybe he was lost from that boat crash I ran across. Or a different ship lost as sea.

If that’s the case, “Hmm, if I’m to keep you, you’ll need a name.” He said as he finished cutting out the old snarled collar. “Rownin will do.” The creature looked at him and wagged it’s stubby tail before crawling back into Ray’s lap and curling up to go to sleep.

“Hey, I need to get up!” He said with a laugh as his new pet ignored him and went to sleep.

That night, he told Fezian that he was headed inland t meet up with Lasarra, which had the old man chuckling and going on about youth and romance much to Rayolun’s amusement. And when he set out the next morning, Rownin was trotting at his heals. I’ll make a new collar for him, he said as he looked at the dark fur and broken horn of the roati. And see what skills he’s been trained in already. I can always ask Lasarra help me train him for other tasks if I need to.
