Rolling to see if I go first: 14+3=17
Rayolun heard the bell ring for the third round to start and left to go back to the arena, curious to see who he'd face this time. He was getting more confident and hoped that he could continue on and perhaps impress Lassara some more.

Initiative: 11 + 3 = 14 -> Rayolun goes first!
As the bell rang for the third round, Tayyib made his way into the arena, just as curious. The Shifter looked confident, and that weapon wasn't one that he saw often. The novelty of matching his sword against the other's trident brought a smile to his face. "Interesting weapon."
A more sobering thought soon came to mind; his lack of familiarity with the trident meant that he didn't know its moves all that well. A trident was certainly interesting, but those prongs looked dangerous. It could be similar to a spear -- they were both polearms, right? -- but maybe not. Best proceed with caution, then.

Ray attacks!

3+8=11 Miss sad
Rayolun dashed forward as soon as the signal to start was given, intending to try and get a stab in as fast as possible. When he came within a stab's reach, he thrust his trident out at the opponents face, but he missed slightly and it went into the air by the others face. Oh well, he thought, at least I have some reach over that sword of his, maybe I'll be able to get some better hits in later.

16 + 7 = 23 > 14 --> hit
(14 + 6)/2 = 10 dmg dealt
Tayyib needed to get the drop on his opponent for a change, he decided. Today was clearly not going to be that day.
While the Leaf youth was still angling for a way to get within range to attack without opening himself up to that superior reach, the Shifter took the decision out of his hands. He braced himself for the trident's hit, but the weapon passed him by. Passed right by his face, to be exact. The attack might have missed, but it was still unsettling.
Overthinking things wouldn't help. Might as well take a cue from his opponent and jump right into attack mode, then. Tayyib lunged forward, sword swinging hard at Rayolun's torso.

Damage 8+2=10/4=2.5 (I hate my low damage XD ) *1.5 for crit=3.75
Rayolun managed to move far enough away to take out some of the incoming blow's sting, but he didn't want to move to far away. Since his opponent had lunged at him and provided some nice openings, he swung his trident about and slashed at open back before him.

Retaliation: (17 + 7)/5 = 4.8 dmg dealt

Maybe Tayyib had a dim awareness of the openings he was presenting, or a more general wariness of the polearm's reach. In any case, he stayed light on his feet, poised to dodge his opponent's next attack. As the trident swung toward him once more, he promptly spun away from the weapon.
The Leaf boy might have moved out of the trident's range, but he and his sword remained well within range of the trident-wielder. Now in a position to retaliate, he didn't hesitate to seize the opportunity. Drawing on the momentum from his dodge, he sent his blade toward Rayolun's side.

Rolled 20+8= hit! With a crit :3
Damage 10+8=18/4=4.5*1.5=6.75 damage dealt
Rayolun swore as his slash missed and the Leaf boy somehow managed to dodge and then attack him back. Growling under his breath Rayolun barely tried to dodging, instead he dodged into the blow to set himself up for his next strike. Twirling his trident, he spun it so that the but of the staff flashed by his opponent with the tri-pronged tip following close behind. He really didn't want to get so close to a swordsman, but this way it'd be harder to dodge.

The trident was moving toward Tayyib again, too fast for his liking and stronger than last time. As the shaft of the trident approached, followed closely by the sharp tri-pronged end, self-preservation instinct kicked in. He twisted to the side, momentum carrying him a little ways past the trident.
Now that he was close to the Shifter once again, the Leaf boy sent his sword scything toward the other prentice's side. This time, he pulled back a fraction of a second sooner, lest his opponent decide to attempt another of his terrifyingly well-aimed attacks. There have already been way too many of those for his comfort. There were probably more on the way too, he thought glumly as he watched for the next attack.

Rayolun was getting pissed off. No matter how well timed his attacks or how fast, this slippery opponent just dodged them all! Growling to himself, he dodged backwards to take out some of the oncoming blow's sting and thrust his trident at the leaf boy, hoping that maybe the distance would allow his trident's longer reach to get him an edge.

Being on alert for an incoming attack didn't always help evade it altogether, though. Warning bells went off in Tayyib's head as Rayolun dodged backwards this time, enabling the Shifter to take advantage of his weapon's superior reach. Couldn't say he was surprised that the Shifter took the opening, really. Tayyib's opponent had shown himself perfectly ready to take the openings presented with well-timed, powerful attacks.
A moment's indecision -- should he dodge backwards too or charge forward? -- slowed him down, and the trident caught up. Ow.

Now that Tayyib had already been hit, what was the worst that could happen? (He could get walloped again by that trident, that's wh-- okay, shut up, brain, it was rhetorical, all right?) Spurred on by the pain of his recent injury, he charged forward and slashed again at the Shifter.
