Building you a home
I'm building you a home

While Ben rested, Thali was getting the nursery ready for their new child. She felt absolutely certain that it would be a boy. She didn't know why, maybe it was instinct. She had brought a large amount of Kristo's old pirate themed bedroom set down from the attic. Ben wouldn't let her go shopping alone, for good reason. Thali had a tendency for implusive buying.

First she set up the dresser. It was a dark blue, with ship wheel shaped knobs. Two on each drawer. The wall was already a vibrant blue, the ceiling was made to look like the night sky, so she didn't have to paint or put up wall paper. Then she replaced the yellow, stained curtians with a darker blue. She ruffled them so they looked like waves. The floor was a yellow color. She'd keep that for now.

She quickly put together the bed. It was wooden, and shaped like a pirate ship. It had a pirate flag to finish the look. She knew the infant wouldn't be able to use this bed for sometime, but when it was older, it would enjoy it.

Thali sighed, she was tired of thinking of the child as an it. She wanted to think of him as Joshua. She set up the bedside table and the lamp next. The lamp was shapped like the front of a ship, with a large ship's wheel and a pirate looking into his compass. The lamp shade was decorated with a pirate's map.

She put the toy box in front of the bed. It was shaped like a large chest. Joshua could put all his treasures into it. Then she studied her work. It needed something more. Toys.

She walked back upstairs into the attic, she knew it was here somewhere. Ah! She spotted a large box labled "Toys". She dragged it downstairs to the room.

It was messily taped shut, like a child had done it in a hurry. She opened it with ease, the tape had lost it's stick through the years. Though the box was old and worn, what was inside looked brand new. She quickly pulled out a large teddy bear, and put it in the corner next to the bed. She put the other stuffed animals the box contained around the toy box.

There were also a great number of blocks. She put those neatly in the chest. The action figures could wait. Joshua wouldn't be old enough to play with those for a while. She didn't want him swallowing the small parts. She decided that she would take Ben shopping tomorrow, Joshua would need more toys than this. She couldn't help it, she wanted to spoil him.

And if I said there is a family,
where the body there moves as one.

Ben was relieved in the morning, things were finally back to normal. He was the first to wake up. He went into the living room, and flipped on the television. He tried to keep it down, but soon Thali was in the hall rubbing her eyes. He expected her to check on the cabbage. But as soon as he looked at her, his relief changed into worry. The girl looked tired- worn out. She was pale, and moving slower than usual. This was strange, was something wrong? His wife was always bursting with energy.

As she came over to the couch, it took all of Ben's will to not get up and help her. "Are you okay?" He asked, concerned. Thali forced a smile to reassure him.

"Just a cold," She said, "I've been over doing it." Ben couldn't agree more with that. She had been running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Ben shook his head at the metaphor. "Just need---Ahh-aa--rest." She struggled against the sneeze.

Ben handed her a kleenex. "Here," He said. "Don't worry, I'll take care of everything." He told her. Thali leaned against the back of the couch, blinking in surprise. She'd guessed Ben would be jealous when the baby arrived.

"Check on the cabbage?" She asked. Ben nodded reluctantly, right now his primary concern was his wife. She always underestimated sickness. It would be wonderful if the baby arrived on Thanksgiving, but Ben wouldn't enjoy it as much if his wife was ill. Besides, who would make dinner? Ben certianly couldn't cook.

He planted a kiss on Thali's forehead saying, "You get some rest." Then he went into the kitchen. He was surprised when the cabbage began to hum. The man thought his ears were going bad for a moment, but the hum was constant. It wasn't a tune, or any kind of song he'd heard before, but something about it was reassuring. "Thali, do you hear that?" He asked, going back into the living room.

Thali frowned, sitting up. "What is it?" She asked. She hadn't seen Ben so excited since... well, since the day he asked her to marry him.

"The cabbage! It's humming!"

There is no alibi
If it's not the truth
Then it's a.....

Ben sighed, after taking care of Thali for a day, he was worn out. He had moved the tv into their room, so she would be kept busy. He knew it wouldn't last long. His wife had always been a bad patient.

He was sitting on the couch when he suddenly heard-
"We'll be feasting with Josh in command! I'd like a taco please, and some pinos and cheese, cause we're going to the Promised Land! And in the Promised Land, it'll be so grand..."

He tried to tune it out, but the song was soon stuck in his head. He thought Thali was being cruel by playing Veggietales. He knew she wasn't watching it, she rarely watched television. Soon a new song was playing...

"Keep walking! She's never going to fall! It's plain to see your brains are very small, to think walking will be knocking down our wall!"

Ben couldn't stand it anymore, the song itself stated that it was irritating. He walked to their room, and frowned. Thali was asleep. There wouldn't be any arguing until she woke up, in any case.

I hold my breath
And I wait for you to breathe

While Thali was watching Interstella 5555, a movie her husband hated with the entire sense of the word, Ben went out into the kitchen on the pretense that he was going to check on the cabbage Thali insisted on calling Joshua. Ben had only very recently started to pay any amount of attention to the oversized plant. Two nights before it had started humming, surprising them both. He poured himself a cup of coffee before pausing.

There was a particular sound coming from his left. He turned to face the cabbage. He felt woozy suddenly, and almost fell over. The plant had opened, revealing a baby.. dressed like a nutcracker, of all things. The child had his eyes open, showing two emeralds. The child, well, Ben guessed he should call him Joshua now, seemed to be humming. Certianly the infant wasn't making the sounds you'd expect from a child this small.

"Well Joshua," he said. "Let's find your mother." He picked up the infant and headed to the living room. "Thali.. lo--..." He started.

Thali shushed him without looking back. "Be quiet, this is the best part!" She said. Ben sighed, all he could see on the screen were four blue aliens being captured. Big deal.

"But Thal... Josh is..." He began again. Thali turned around to glare at him, then noticed the baby. Her mouth went into an O shape.

After recovering, she jumped up to take Joshua from him. "He's so cute!" She said happily. Then she too, noticed the humming. She turned off the TV so she could hear properly. "I know that tune!" She said, blinking in surprise. Ben listened closely, and realized that he recognized the song as well. He could easily tell it was Shine.

Ben smiled, he couldn't help looking proud. "He's humming on tune!"

Wherever we go
That's where the party's at

Within a week, the infant they had found was no longer so innocent. Joshua was just as mischeivious as his mother, crawling faster than Ben was willing to go, opening everything he could. Ben was not pleased, as usual. 'He's going to end up just like Thali...' He thought. 'Spoiled.'

Music seemed to calm the child down, as Thali had learned quickly. But she was at the store now. Ben sighed, remembering how she'd got Joshua to relax. He liked to sit and listen, or hum to it, sometimes he kicked his feet to the music.

Ben sighed, and turned on the radio. Instantly the Beatles started playing. "We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine." The radio sang.

The man rolled his eyes. Thali had weird tastes in music. Then he remembered, it was Beatles Wednesday. The oldies station 880 was known for playing ten songs by the English band on Wednesdays. Joshua had come back into the living room by now.

Ben was relieved, and picked up the infant, holding him away from his chest so he could look at him. "You," He told the babe, "Need to stop getting into trouble!" The child's eye's widened, and had a worried sparkle in them. He sighed, Joshua was too cute to be angry at him, he wouldn't admit that though. "It's okay," he said, hugging him. He'd never heard Joshua cry, and wasn't planning on being the one who got him to.

When we laugh so hard we cry
It's the love between you and I

Baffled as the couple was by the speed of their son's growth, they tried to adjust. He was roughly the size of a toddler, and had a well rounded vocabuary. This doesn't mean that the toddler was always talking to his parents. No, his favorite companion was the cat.

His mother often commented that he was a unique child. This was true, most children wouldn't spend so much time with an old, occassionally grumpy cat. But Joshua brought out the best in Nikki, it seemed. She was always purring, and rubbing against him.

The old she-cat lead him outside. He was of course, in boots. Thali was very concerned about his habit of having barefeet. Especially in the snow. The sliding glass door had been opened.

Joshua quickly followed the red and white cat to the blackberry bushes in the yard. They were almost completely buried in the snow. But he could hear a faint mewing sound. He layed down in the snow to see underneath them. Huddled up in a small ball was a kitten. Josh put his hand out, and the kitten hesitantly went to him. He gently picked it up and hurried to the house.

"Mommy! Look what I found!"

Boy, I really love you
With my heart and soul
Won't you take me where I want go?

There came a time when Thali's only goal in life seemed to be torturing Ben. She had told him that morning that she was planning on adopting a sibling for Joshua. The small boy was thrilled with the idea, he'd always been jealous of Ginger and Zemel.

Ben wasn't so pleased. He sighed, thinking this over. They had so many pets. He was much less fond of the creatures than his wife and son were. There were a few he got along with. He didn't like to admit it, though.

Thali continued her speech about wanting to help a child in need. "They're lonely, and no one wants them!" She said. "Even if they are unusal, they should always feel needed." Ben sighed, his wife had always had a soft spot for this kind of thing. He wasn't keen on agreeing to adopt this child she'd heard about.

"And he's a baby." Thali added. She was sure Joshua and this boy would get along. "A little younger than Josh." Ben wondered why she was taking so long to get to the point. "He's a little different," She continued, "But he'll be ours, and we'll love him."

That startled Ben. Just how different was this boy? Thali didn't usually draw out this topic like she was now. "You mean mentally?" He asked.

Thali glared at him. "No! I mean, physically. He's unique."

I am free to run
I am free to dance
I am free

Thali was positively beaming, no it was more than that. She was glowing with happiness. Behind her was a small boy with horns and a tail. The boy's new mother had quickly decided he would need custom made clothes, so before she had brought Vince home, she had taken him straight to the tailors.

So despite his 'uniqueness' as Thali called it, he could still look like a normal little boy. Kinda. Thali looked around the living room. She was quick to spot Joshua. The toddler was playing with one of their new kittens, she couldn't tell which.

"Josh, come here," She called him. The small boy hurried to his mother. "Joshy, this is Vinny. He's your new brother." She knew he would want to show Vinny around. Joshua was kind enough to reach out his hand and take Vinny's taloned one. Then he lead the younger boy to the play room.

The instant the two were out of earshot, Ben's computer chair whirled around. The man looked furious, and it took all of Thali's will power not to flinch.

"Unique? That's unique?" Ben asked, scowling.

Thali frowned. "He's such a sweet boy. No one else wanted him!" She said sighing, "He needs us."

Ben glared at her, but his expression was slowly softening. "You know how I feel about.... Non-humans." He struggled with the words.

"Then you'll have no problem with him." Thali said shortly. "He is human, just different." Ben's mouth gapped open in silent complaint.

Thali smiled, knowing this arguement was won. She absentmindedly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She quickly realized Ben was staring.

"Are you okay love?" She asked, concerned.

Ben kept staring, his mouth was gapping. Thali wondered why until she put a hand to the side of her head. Her ear was showing.

"You're... You're... you.." Ben stammered when he found his voice.

Thali had never recieved such a reaction, she didn't know what to say. "I am," She said simply. She knew Ben had a grudge against elves, and other fantastical creatures. He'd had one since she'd met him. Surely he wasn't afraid of her now? Not after knowing her for so long.

However much Ben hated such creatures, he knew he couldn't leave her. She'd look so scared, so sad. He couldn't stay angry at her after that.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 05, 2008 7:21 pm

He's been gone for
Such a long time.
My boyfriend's back.

What was this? Torture your husband day? Because that's what Thali seemed to be doing. First she asked Stasia's friend to a date, as friends, of course, but Ben wondered why he hadn't been invited. Then she invited the man, well... elf, Ben hated the most to stay in their house for a few weeks. Thali seemed okay with the idea, but her husband knew better.

Vate was the elf she had tried so hard to get away from. She had only recently been able to admit her past. She was a runaway princess. Her parents had tried to force her into marrying Vate when she was very young. Despite running away, Vate was always able to find her. Each time, Vate would take her back to the elves.

Thali had often told Ben that she and Vate had been very close as children. Ben could hardly believe this. Thali explained that arranged marriages were traditional in the royal family. The children hadn't been told about this tradition until they were older.

Naturally, Thali had wanted to see the world outside of Lynwood. She had been adopted by a well to do family who never paid attention to her occasional disapearance.

Ben sighed. He hated the very idea of having this elf near his children. But both Joshua and Vinny seemed to get along with him fairly well, to his surprise. From Thali's stories, he had expected a cruel, uncaring man. This elf was gentle with the children, and occasionally kind-spoken. He did have a glint in his eye whenever he set eyes on Thali, but Ben didn't think it was malicious. However, it wasn't exactly friendly, either. It was more of a jealous hunger.

Ben was slightly distrubed by such looks. He didn't dare mention them to Thali. She had told him of her plot to get her friends Stasia and Matthias together. He wasn't very interested in this until she explained that this was the only reason she was willing to go on "dates" with Matth.

I fought the la..
And the la won

After a few weeks of Thali's trying and failing to get Matth and Stasia together, the young elf had finally given up. Or so it appeared, to Ben. "Are you going out again tonight?" He asked her tiredly.

Thali shook her head. "No," She said, "Both Stasia and Matth are too stubborn to admit their feelings for each other. There's nothing more I can do for them." She was silent for a long time, then added, "But. I can set Stasia and Vate up. They'd make a good couple."

Ben frowned slightly, but then he thought about it. Getting Vate to fall in love with someone besides Thali was a brilliant idea. It would get him to stop hanging on her all the time, and Ben would finally get some peace and quiet. He hoped.

His hope didn't last long, right after Thali had shoved the two boys out the door with their uncle, she told him she needed to tell him something. Ben knew better than to be impatient, she looked serious. What an unusual expression for the elf to be wearing...

"Ben, I'm going to have a baby." She told him. Ben didn't know whether to be excited, or to faint. He was thinking about doing both.

"Wake up! Wake up Mommy! Daddy!" Joshua cried, jumping onto his parents bed, and bouncing them awake. "Santa's been here!" Both parents groaned, but they couldn't get back to sleep.

"Where's Vinny?" Thali asked sleepily. She had quickly noticed that her youngest son wasn't with Josh.

"He's already opening presents," Joshua made a face at his brother's greed. He took his parents by the hand and led them to the living room. The family had set up a large tree the day before. It was decorated with tinsil, and bulbs of every color. Underneath the tree was a large assortment of gifts, and Vincent.

"Mine!" The toddler said in greeting. He was already ripping into his gifts. He had thrown the clothes onto the floor, displeased. With every toy he recieved, he put it carefully beside him. He would play with them later, first he wanted to see how many he got.

Thali went to the tree. "Josh look!" She said, "All these have your name on them!" She encouraged him to start opening them, and then handed Ben a gift. "From me," She told him, "Merry Christmas."

Ben opened the gift slowly, as if he wanted to save the wrapping paper. Thali rolled her eyes. Ben was surprised at the gift, he hadn't really expected anything. Inside was a cell phone.

"But.." Ben started. Thali put a finger to his lips.

"So you can call when you're worried about me." She said, teasing.

If you love me
Tell me that you love me
If you don't
Please tell that you do.

"But.. Ben, it's Christmas... and I...." Thali began, she was trying to keep calm, but her husband's anger had startled her. What had she done this time? She couldn't bring herself to apologize when she didn't know what she had done wrong. She had gotten him a nice gift... Was he upset... Maybe he hadn't... No, she didn't think that was it.

The man was already pushing her towards the hall. He had the decency to make sure she was wearing a coat, then shoved her out. He slammed the door behind her, not wanting to hear her sniffle. He regretted making her cry when she was so close to giving birth; but he was far too furious to let his conscience take over.

Vate had told Ben many things, none of which he liked. He'd told him how he was planning on getting married, and having kids. All the while never saying who the woman was. Ben assumed it was Thali, and so, being the paranoid mortal that he was; kicked her out. He didn't feel like listening to what she had to say. Elves were known for not telling the entire truth.. Though, up until now, he had always found Thali to be honest. Ben just couldn't seem to bring himself to believe her this time.

She had stated that Vate was seeing Stasia. Ben didn't believe her. Stasia was a sensible woman; she'd never fall for Vate. Thali had tried telling him that she was devoted to him-- but Ben couldn't believe that either. All week, Thali had been going out, and came back close to six am. Surely if she was commited, she wouldn't go out? Ben couldn't believe it- he didn't trust his own wife.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 17, 2008 11:28 pm

After Ben had visited Stasia, and been visited by Nataya, he had to think about what he had done. Thali had gotten sick from emotional stress; a strange thing. He'd heard that elves didn't get sick.

Stasia had explained that they do only when they get physically or emotionally stressed, or are exposed to nasty weather. Thali had had both. Ben hadn't told her why he was kicking her out-- she had assumed it was because he hadn't liked her presents.

Stasia made the couple work it out. Thali finally admitted to what she had really been doing during the night. She had been purchasing gifts; with Vate's help. She had never been good at choosing gifts for men.

She'd also had to take a trip to the doctor's. The doctor had informed her that they were having twins. She admitted to having been worried about telling Ben, with good reason.

"....Twins?" He had repeated. Twins? They already had two children already! This was horrible news! But Stasia seemed to think it was wonderful. What was she thinking? Ben couldn't handle two more babies! They were loud, and obnoxious, and they watched Veggie Tales..

Twins were obviously one of the worst ways to torture a man.

Written January 1st, 2009

"Happy New Year!" Thali cried, looking outside. She was standing next to a large bay window. Bursts of fireworks were coming from every direction. It had been the elf's bright idea to let Joshua and Vinny stay up and greet 2009, but the toddlers were asleep on the couch.

Ben put a blanket over them before going to join his wife at the window. "Happy New Year," He said, putting an arm over her shoulder. "Let's make a resolution this year." He started--

Thali couldn't help but smile. "Resolution? You mean the goals people set up to meet in the year, but forget within a week of making them? Why would we want to make one of those?"

Ben knew his wife well enough to tell that she was teasing him. "We'll keep ours." He said seriously. "We'll resolve to stop fighting."

"And this time," She said teasing, "You get to pick the names. Do you want anything to drink?" She asked, going to the kitchen.

Ben sighed. Thali hadn't taken him seriously, or, if she had she was pretty good at hiding it. "Sure," He said, but he kept his eyes on the fireworks. He couldn't help thinking. What would the year hold for them? Would they meet more people? One thing he knew for sure about the new year.

Thali would cause him more trouble than she had in the one before.
