Who would have thought Halloween week would be such a blast? Lural hadn’t partied like that with so many people since elementary school. And even those parties weren’t stocked with real demons.
But it was good to see so many familiar faces, both human and not, show for the party. Looking back, she found it funny that a real zombie crashed the party, and eventually, the poor girl she had been chasing all around the shop eventually took her home. Even Emothunder had joined the festivities. While talking to her old friend though, a demon she’d never seen before approached her.
“Human” he said. “You seem like the kind that interacts with everyone. You have several other demons, and you act so freely with the other humans. I’m making you my research subject.” Lural could only stare blankly at him before starting to giggle a little.
“Sure sure.” She didn’t take him seriously. And it was getting late. The party was winding down for the night. Well, by this time it was already morning. “Well, I should get going. See you tomorrow night, Emo. Hey guys, see you tomorrow night!” She called to the others who were still at the party- and were awake. It wasn’t many.
Leaving the party, she forgot about the purple slug-like demon that had called her a research subject. By the time she reached her home, Lural was ready to simply crash. She shooed Augustus off her bed, to be scolded later, and faceplanted the pillows.
“What an odd ritual.” That voice… “I thought that humans usually pulled down the fabrics of their bedding. Fascinating!” Lural rolled her head to the side and opened a slightly blood shot eye. The purple slug-like demon was staring right back at her.
“What are you doing?” She grumbled.
“Researching.” He replied, totally content to just sit and watch her.
“Go research somewhere else. I’m sleeping.”
“You’re so coherent in your sleep then. We can converse while you slumber. Truly, an amazing specimen you are.” This prompted Lural to throw a small blue pillow at the demon.
“Just who are you?” She glared at him. The demon stood up a little taller.
“I have taken a liking to the name Cetus. Like the constellation of the sea beast.” He stated proudly. “So that is what I wish to be called.”
“Alright then. Cetus. Get out.” Lural closed her eyes again.
“I have no where else to go though.” Was this human really turning him away? Perhaps he wasn’t being charming.
“Look, there are several other demons here. You said it yourself. Go… go bug Jun for a while. She’ll be a good subject to study.” With that, Cetus’s face lit up.
“She? Oh, you aren’t making me leave your home?”
“OUT!” The shout caused Cetus to scramble out of her bedroom. Oi. Another one… She thought, drifting into dreams plagued by mad scientist winis.

The party was in full swing now. Halloween was but 2 days away, and the excitement was almost overwhelming. It wasn’t just the humans who were feeding off the energies of the night, but even the demons seemed in an odd state of both glee and mischief. Of course, some demons were understandably off, like Aedan. He had come up with a new scheme to acquire candy. And oddly enough it was working.
Even though she was still being followed around by that strange slug demon, Cetus, Lural didn’t mind. He was staying out of the way, and when he saw a female, he would wander off to chat with her.
Lural was out back behind the shop, talking with an old friend, Samus, about this and that. A cold wind kicked up a moment, shaking the overhead lanterns, the swinging lights making the already creepy shadows dance as if alive. Lural glanced out at the shrubs and trees behind the shop, but there wasn’t anything out there. That was silly. It wasn’t until Samus stared off behind Lural that she slowly turned to look as well. Just on the edge of the light, hidden under a leafless bush were curled two small forms. Samus was the first to approach them, and Lural followed behind quickly.
Curled with each other was a pair of young winiko. They smelled rancid. Like they had been dead for days, just laying there. It was kind of disgusting. As the lights swung again, lighting their forms, it was obvious they were in early stages of decay, with their ashen skin, sparse pelts, and broken, cracked horns. The flesh was already gone on the tail of the dead girl. Lural was about to suggest they tell the shop staff, when the girl opened her eyes and stared at the two of them. Lural practically screamed. Or, maybe she had screamed (Lural wasn’t sure anymore) as the dead demon looked at them with her one eye, and the vacant socket. Slowly, the young male beside her opened his eyes and stared at the humans. Lural glanced at Samus, who was already reaching for the little ones. Thinking she understood what was going on, Lural reached for the boy, to at least get him inside. The boy moved his head, his horn stabbing Lural’s hand.
“There’s some powerful magic going on tonight. Some black magic.” Lural wasn’t sure if that was Samus speaking or not, but she replied.
“Voodoo?”
Good names for the decaying undead demons. Vu and Du.

“I’m going to kill you when we get home.” Jun said to Lural as they approached their home away from home. The little unassuming shop that held dark secrets and magic, that had changed their lives forever, was home to just about the strangest batch of people ever was now decked out to look… jolly. Lights and merry wreaths covered the exterior, and slowly grew dusted with snow. “This is humiliating.”
Lural looked down at Jun with a smile. “But you look adorable.” She had made Jun wear antlers and a bell harness. Jun drew the line at a glowing red nose. Lural was dressed up in a red robe trimmed with white fur. She wore holly in her hair and carried a sprig of mistletoe with her. Tucked under an arm was a small wrapped gift. Jun snorted as they entered the shop. The other guests were in… slightly more festive then normal outfits. Cheery and colorful holidays like this weren’t exactly the forte of anyone here.
“If anyone laughs at me you die on the spot.” Jun said and slunk off.
The evening was filled with lots of ‘Christmas cheer’ that took the form of rum, spiced cider, and eggnog for some reason. Everyone present had brought a gift, and as the night wore on, the presents were given out anonymously in a “Secret Santa” sort of way. Several gifts held a raffle ticket. Lural was curious about it. Raffles here were always… interesting to say the least.
As the night wore on, people began to go home or pass out on the couches and beanbags around the room. That was when the raffle tickets came into play. Numbers were drawn, and as they were, the person with that number went to claim their prize. The catch was you had to still be here. Two numbers called, the owners weren’t there anymore. Replacement numbers were called, and Lural was lucky enough to have one of those numbers.
Or perhaps it should be seen as unlucky as a sleeping demon was plopped in her arms. His hair was a sticky white mess that resembled frosting, and his fur had the texture of cookies. She looked at the boy who smelled spicy, and all too sweet like over sugared, fresh baked cookies.
Gingerbread cookies.
Well, it is the holidays. “Gingerbread would be a good name,” she mused, walking back to mingle with the others who were still there.
“He’ll kill you for that name. You should just call him Ginger.” Jun slid over to her human. She had the feeling that the little boy would kill her for that name too.
At least Gin was a good enough nickname.
Happy Ho ho holidays at Winiko.

The music was blaring, the crowd screaming and cheering as the band finished their last set. The field west of Barton had been set up to for a benefit concert to raise awareness of corporate corruption throughout Gaia. The featured band was an up and coming hard rock-metal band, but watching as they finished, Lural knew no one would remember them. They were just another faceless teenage fad.
She stood with the other volunteers and waited for the band to leave the stage and the crowd to start to leave before they could get to work. It wasn’t that Lural was here because she liked the music. Oh no. Far from. But business in January was always a little slow, so the money from working this event should cover the bills until the Valentine’s rush kicked in. Finally the curtains closed, and the house lights came on and the tear down of all the equipment could finally begin.
Manual labor was not something the redhead was too thrilled with, but it wasn’t so bad. She even recognized a few people who were helping, so the idle chatter while everyone worked helped make the work seem lighter. She shifted a box of equipment in her arms as one of the other girls working with her dropped an extension cord into the box. Something on the bottom caught her hand and she winced.
“You ok?” The other girl asked her as she climbed down the ladder. Lural recognized her from somewhere, but couldn’t place her face… or name.
“Yeah, the box just bit me. I’ll go put it away and-”
“Oh no, I’ll take the box. Here, take this and go clean up your hand. Won’t do any good to get an infection or whatever. These boxes are just about the dirtiest one’s I’ve ever seen.” The girl took the box while handing Lural a handkerchief and shooed her off. As she walked towards the restrooms- thankful that the horrendous line that had been there through most of the concert had vanished- and began to clean her hand off, she noticed there was something hard inside the cloth. Curious, she opened the cloth up to see, and nearly dropped the blue amulet inside.
All too familiar. That’s what it was. Seeing the amulet, and knowing what it was almost made Lural drop it. Instead, she quickly pulled her injured hand away from it and carefully maneuvered the strap of the amulet over head. “Oh god, another one. I might need to find someone to take this.” A demon amulet. Lural already had a good hoard of demons at her house, and they were quite a handful! After cleaning her hand and bandaging the small wound, she tucked the amulet into her staff shirt and went back to work, forgetting about the amulet
It seemed like they would never finish taking down the equipment, but at last, finally, it was done, and the team could go home. Lural wanted nothing more then a hot shower and then to crash in bed. She dropped her bag onto the coat rack as she entered her home and closed the door behind her with a foot when there was a sudden sharp pain in her ankle and a low growl. Lural practically fell as she tried to shake off whatever was attacking her. Whatever it was let go, and when she looked, she saw a small blue rump vanish around behind her legs as it headed behind her towards the coat rack. Looking to the other side she saw a bright blue demon staring up at her with violet eyes glinting in mischief.
Oh right. The amulet. “Well hello there little one.” Lural was twitching just a little.
“Hello big thing.” The small demon replied. Lural was about to kneel down beside the coat rack and talk to the little one when the blue demon took off running, knocking the rack over as she ran. She ran over to a coffee table.
Ran into the coffee table is more like it. The table tipped and pinned the demon, who instantly began to squeal in fear as she scrambled to try and get free.
“Whoa whoa, calm down.” Lural rushed over. “Here, let me help you.” She righted the table and the girl skittered to one of Lural’s end tables, sliding behind it, but knocking into it, and quickly she darted behind Lural’s legs.
“That thing is EVIL!”
“The table?” Lural began to chuckle. “You know, a demon calling something evil… no, never mind.” The humor and irony would probably be lost on such a young, and recently summoned creature. “You’re sure a destructive little terror.” It reminded her of something.
Yeah, it was around this time of year too. The earthquake when Lural was a child. Lural reached behind her to pull the girl around front. The demon protested at first until Lural picked her up. The small girl purred slightly. “I’m going to call you Northridge.” I hope you’re not as destructive as that earthquake was.
“Okay!”
“Now Northridge, it’s very late, and I’m very tired. So I’m going to show you where you should sleep. You’ll be with other demons. They can answer your questions about this house. Or you can ask me after I’ve slept, ok?”
“Oh… okay.” The girl drooped a little that she couldn’t play with the human right now, but when she saw there were indeed many other demons, she figured playing with them would be just as fun.
After all, she now had a lifetime to terrorize Lural.

Everyone was in an uproar. Aedan and Aponi had just summoned a handful of amulets (In a bit of a drunken stupor). It seemed that when Aedan sobered up, he realized that he had kids and promptly began to steal the amulets and hide them.
And as sad as it was, the hunt for the amulets was quite exciting. Aedan was playing with one, and was being bribed by some of the locals to put it down. Those who were bribing him of course were those left after Aedan had tied one of the amulets to a rat and set it free. In all the wild commotion, even some of Lural's own demons were chasing the poor thing. And after all that, Aedan casually mentioned he had hidden another amulet. They weren’t his problem after all.
Oh great.
So another search started. While there were still people chasing the rat, others began to look around the shop trying to find where the demon would have thrown the amulet. The candy jars were raided several times in hopes that the demon had hidden it among his favorite thing on Earth.
But that would imply that the demon liked the amulet. And clearly, he did not. Lural’s search took her first to the bathrooms where she had to check each toilet, in case Aedan thought it was a piece of crap and tried to flush it. Thankfully, there was no sign of it in any of them.
Lural saw someone crawl into Sully’s boxes, searching. Drat. That was where she was going to look next. In passing some of the shop staff, Lural commented off hand that maybe Aedan sent the amulet to Tahiti (Coach of course) And if someone wanted to send her after it to look, Lural was more then willing to go to try and find the amulet.
She heard Mel scream as someone checked her underwear for the amulet. Maybe it would have been wiser to wait till she wasn’t wearing them to check. Lural thought with amusement. Then an idea struck her. The soulless caretaker of the shop. There was plenty of room in his vacant soul pit! Lural practically attacked Sully to demand that he spit the amulet out of the soul pit.
Aedan’s laughter ripped through the shop as he laughed at all the humans who so desperately searched for the amulet. Finally, he grabbed Aponi by the tail and lifted her rump up and slid the amulet out.
Somehow, Lural got the feeling that she had made the biggest a** of herself, which is why Aedan gave the amulet to her. It was probably her pride that made her keep the amulet herself, even though she had just found that blue amulet just the other day. But if she made that big a fool of herself, then Lural was most definitely keeping this little prize.
She had taken the amulet home, and for several days was plagued with the thought of summoning yet another demon. Finally, she decided she might as well. And with a few drops of blood, the deed was done.
Please don’t be anything like your father… Lural silently pleaded as the amulet vanished and in it’s place was a small winged purple girl. She was kind of cute. And she was sleeping, and not being a total a** like Aedan undoubtedly would be- even in his sleep. Initial signs: Good!
When the little one finally did wake up, she moved slowly, carefully, to stand and looked around. “Are you the one who summoned me?” She asked softly.
“I am.”
“It is a pleasure to meet you then. Please, do not be alarmed by my pres-” She was cut off abruptly as a sticky gingerbread boy raced past, chased by a blue blur. North just wouldn’t leave Gin alone.
“You’re so polite.” Lural sat down in a chair, looking at the demon. “I was worried that you’d be rambunctious like those 2 that just ran by, or rude like… never mind.” The new demon stretched her wings, then with a graceful leap, landed on the couch and looked over to where Lural sat.
“If I’m offending you, then I will try to be more… rowdy.”
“Oh goodness, please, don’t change at all. It’s rather nice to think that there will be a calm one around here.” The little girl nodded. “You’re just about the prettiest little thing ever. And you’re so regal.” This earned Lural a curious head tilt. “You deserve the name of a queen.” Lural jumped up and headed to a bookshelf. The demon watched her curiously as Lural began to flip through pages of a dusty old book. “How do you like the name Cassiopeia?”
“I like it just fine.”
“Then, how about that be your name?” The child nodded again. “Well then Cassi, It’s time for you to meet everyone.”
“My name is not Cassi… It’s Cassiopeia. Or have you already forgotten?”
