February was not just the month of Ainsley's birthday but it was also the month of one of her favourite holidays: Valentine's Day. What? Valentine's Day is not a holiday? What blasphemy is this? Ainsley refuses to believe such nonsense! What makes a day a holiday more than love? Valentine's Day is all about love, and is a wonderful holiday despite what any lonely single adults have to say about it. It is a day where you can get the courage to express how you feel to another and celebrate your loved ones with cute cards, chocolate or even just a kiss!
Ainsley hoped to accomplish her day with all three in one! Well, not exactly in one but all three together! It started with an after school visit to her neighbour's house. She was a sweet elderly woman who had invited Ainsley over on several occasions while Bell and Xavier were busy. Ainsley thought she could take care of herself, but Mrs. Clayton was such nice company that Ainsley didn't mind it so much. She knew a lot of amazing things but if there was one thing she knew, it was baking! Ainsley on the other hand didn't know much about baking but Mrs. Clayton had always took the time to help her when she expressed a desire to bake. Whether it had been peculiar cookies in the shape of a cat or now her desire to make chocolates for all her friends and loved ones.
"Truffles," Mrs. Clayton told Ainsley while pointing to a simple recipe in one of her cookbooks. It was a bit of an older book, and the recipes were handwritten on small cards. The recipe only called for four ingredients including butter, cream cheese, powered sugar and of course... chocolate!
"This is the very recipe I used back when I was thirteen and wanted to confess to Mr. Clayton over there," she pointed toward the living room where her husband seemed content to read a book. As Mrs. Clayton reminisced, Ainsley happily gathered the ingredients from the kitchen and brought them over to the counter. "He was quite a few years older than me and he was such a popular fellow that I never thought he'd take my confession seriously but despite all of that I wanted to put all my heart into it."
The chocolate chips had been measured by Mrs. Clayton and then placed in a pot on the oven to melt. Ainsley was watching her carefully, not just to see what she was doing but to also heard how the story ended.
"What did he say when you gave them to him?" Ainsley inquired happily as she measured out the powered sugar just as Mrs. Clayton had instructed her. It was three cups, which Ainsley measured out very carefully. She wanted this chocolate to not only have all her heart in it like Mrs. Clayton's had but she also wanted it to taste perfect!
"He made an expression I'd never seen before, and I don't think I'll ever forget it! His face was redder than the apple's in the apple tree out back," she laughed happily. "He was embarrassed! He told me that he thought a pretty girl like me would never like a simple fishermen like him." It was obviously a story Mrs. Clayton was fond of because she was smiling like a schoolgirl. Mr. Clayton seemed to have put his book down for just a moment to glance toward the kitchen. It seemed both of them were fond of that memory and it made Ainsley smile.
It was exactly what Ainsley hoped to do and when Mrs. Clayton pulled several bowls down from the cabinet placed them on the counter the child sighed happily. She could only hope that her story turned out in a favourable fashion as hers did.
By the time the two had gotten the rest of the ingredients prepared as well as mixed the butter and the powered sugar together smoothly that the chocolate was ready to be added. Mrs. Clayton poured the hot chocolate carefully into the bowl and then put it in front of Ainsley with a spatula so the child could have the pleasure of stirring her chocolate all by herself. She wasn't the best mixer nor was she keeping the counter as clean Mrs. Clayton would but she was putting all her might into it.
"Oh my, what strong arms you have Ainsley," Mrs. Clayton complimented the child. It was definitely what Ainsley needed, and before long, the chocolate was mixed.
She was disappointed when Mrs. Clayton told her that they had to let the chocolate set while in the refrigerator for an hour but the older woman cheered her up rather quickly when she pulled out a recipe for some frosting. What better way to personalize them than to have Ainsley pipe frosting onto them. Not only that, but it seemed to make the time go by much faster and before Ainsley even noticed, the frosting was done and the chocolate was ready.
"Ooh, it's cold!" Ainsley thought out loud, giggling. Her giggles caused Mrs. Clayton to laugh as well. She could remember thinking the same thing when she'd made them years ago. She wondered if Ainsley wondered how they stayed cool inside like she had and smiled at the thought. She didn't do much, deciding she should let Ainsley do the rest now that it didn't involve anything too complicated. She showed her what to do, rolling them into balls, and then she played the role as a cheerleader.
It took awhile, but thanks to Mrs. Clayton being there, the time was pleasant. She told her an interesting fact about truffles, and then a story about Cupid. It seemed fitting for the holidays, and Ainsley was so caught up in it that she almost forgot what name she was frosting onto the truffle. Sam had almost gotten several truffles in the progress and she'd nearly forgotten to write ********* name down because of it. She couldn't what would happen if that happen!
"I'm done!" She announced as she showed them to Mrs. Clayton. Mrs. Clayton gave the truffles a long and serious loo before glancing at Ainsley. There were several hms, and although she was just teasing her Ainsley got anxious. Were they okay? She waited for judgment.
"Ohh, well done Ainsley!"
There was a short pause as she looked at the names. There were quite a few but she was able to pick out a few boys, and then a few stranger names. She always thought it was strange how some people named their children but ********* and Ixion? It seemed a little strange.
"Oh? So which of these boys are you confessing to?" She was only teasing her because it was Valentine's Day, but Ainsley's face lit up like a street lamp giving the older woman the impression that she'd shot a bulls eye. She let it go, saying nothing else and just giving a light laugh.
Later, after Ainsley helped clean up the kitchen, she took all the truffles home except two home with her. She'd made one for both Mr. and Mrs. Clayton. There was nothing left to do now but to deliver these, although some of them would be harder to give away than others. Bell, Cora and Xavier would be easy since they'd be at home; Istas, Lissy, Peter, Ridley, and Sam would be able to receive their gifts at school; and Ainsley would make a trip to the library to deliver the truffles to Mr. Darrow and hopefully see Ever as well; Senri would be home but *********> and Ixion? She wasn't sure when she'd see them again. It was unlikely she'd be able to run into ********* at the park two times in a row and although Ixion always seemed to show up when she was in danger she wasn't about to go do it just to see him.
She sighed, looking at the Ixion chocolates in particular. Hopefully the chocolate wouldn't go bad if she wasn't able to see them right away.

Ainsley was super excited to deliver Senri his chocolate as well as a Valentine's Day card that she had made for him but even though she had picked out a box for his chocolates she couldn't pick the right outfit to wear. It had to just as perfect as the box because today was the day! She was going to confess to him and her story would end up just like Mrs. Clayton's! But how could it when she didn't have anything to wear? Well, she had tons but none of it seemed mature enough for her confession. She needed Senri to notice her and think she's cute. Nothing seemed right!
Nothing would ever seem just right. It was either her hair, or her dress, or even her shoes but after changing one to make it better something else would go horribly wrong. It took forever, probably longer than the truffle took to make but Ainsley settled on something. It was as nice as she was going to get, and it even had a bow on it that matched the bow on the box she picked out for her chocolates.
She was ready. She had the truffles, she had the confidence and she had cute bows. What more could she ask for? Senri? She could ask, she could beg, but she first had to take a step out the door. Hopefully Senri would be home! Oh, she hoped! It was even a beautiful day, she was almost eleven, the sun was shining later than it used to. It was the perfect day for a confession. Absolutely perfect.
That was until she dropped the box.
If an internet emote could describe her face, it would probably have been similiar to this progression:
o_o O_O ._. ;_; ; n; T nT
She'd dropped the box. It opened and the chocolate fell right into a nasty puddle of slush from the city's road clearing. It was ruined and with it her confidence had been devastated. She reached down to pick up the box but then she stopped. She couldn't confess to Senri anymore, and without even picking up the box or the the chocolate the child turned away and went home. Senri would never know how she felt and she'd never have Mrs. Clayton's happy ending.

With everything that had happened over the past year, Ainsley had a lot of time to herself and with that time she did a lot of thinking about what she wanted to accomplish as Sailor Hypnos. She had a very specific set of beliefs that no one seemed to agree with. It made her question what it was to be a senshi and if she really wanted to partake in such behaviour.
Ainsley had put a lot of thought into it and she discovered that the most differences she faced as a senshi had to do with youma. As a senshi she was suppose to dismiss them immediately but Hypnos didn't want to kill them because to her they were still a living creature. To her, it seemed no different than releasing a tiger into the city. The tiger would be a threat, but should you kill it simply because it is misplaced? Hypnos didn't think so!
She thought that if she learned more about them that she could convince other senshi not to simply kill them on sight. Maybe if she worked hard enough she could even figure out where they really belonged, and then if she could bring them there then a lot of problems in Destiny City could be solved! The youma could live a life without being killed and civilians wouldn't have to worry about being attacked.
This lead Ainsley to the library! She needed to properly research things and that meant that she found herself in a part of the library she wasn't familiar with. There were no tall castles or storybooks, and instead she was faced with rows and rows of books. She didn't know where to start but thanks to the signs that labeled all the shelves she soon found the area she wanted to be in.
It took longer than she wanted but soon Ainsley had several books on the topic of rope and knots, and then a few books on hunting. She didn't need all of them though, and after considering what she wanted to do she quickly put all the books back except for the ones on rope, knots and trapping. If she was going to do this, she was going to do it her way. She would use these books to find out how to tie rope together into a net and then she would find a way to trap a youma. It would be tough but she would study really hard! Surely someone out there would be proud of her for it.
It wasn't unusual for Ainsley to read books in the library before checking the books out Ainsley but it was unusual for her to be in this section of the library. She found the tables and chairs to be different even though they weren't. The lights seemed different too but they were no brighter than the others. Things seemed different, almost like her world was shifting just a bit. Maybe it was, maybe she was growing up.
There was a hint of caution as she sat in the chair, finding herself unable to get comfortable in them as easily as the chairs in the other section of the library. They felt the same, but somehow they weren't. It left her staring at the books in front of her until she finally decided on an order, starting with the book on ropes first and then edging into the book on knots. By the end of the day she was looking at the book on traps with a strange interest as she shifted uneasily in the chair. It might have been the visual aid displaying a cute rabbit but even without a fairy tale story, Ainsley was compelled to continue reading until she had finished.
She had a goal but that goal would be for another day. For now she would check these books out and head on home, she had a lot more to think about.

Ainsley had borrowed a couple books from the library but it had been several days and she hadn't found the right time to look at them. Every day there seemed to be something else that was more important to be done that was forced upon her from school to household chores with Bell. She was determined that today would be the day she'd finally be able to though!
Just to make sure nothing came up to surprise her, Ainsley had decided that she would take her study elsewhere. It meant she had to go outside though so to ensure that she wouldn't be uncomfortable with the chilly weather she made sure to dress warmly with winter leggings and a scarf to top of her usual attire before gingerly placing the books she borrowed from the library into her backpack and heading out for the park near her home.
It was a short walk but it was mildly entertaining thanks to the piles of leaves and the friendly neighbourhood strays that Ainsley stopped to play with. She didn't linger too long, although she felt guilty when she looked back to see them following her. It caused her to stop and play with more before she realized she had to leave quickly and not look back or else the cats would simply continue to follow her.
Her arrival at the park was not what she expected though. Instead of being greeted with a comforting, quiet place to work she quickly found herself walking away in search of a new place. There were a surprising amount of children here today, and soon Ainsley began to suspect there may be a celebration of some kind happening with the appearance of balloons and what appeared to be someone with rainbow hair. As interesting as it may have been, or how much it appealed to the child to investigate further: Ainsley was determined to do what she set out to do.
The library was the next logical place to go given expectations and location but when she got there she found herself realizing that there was an event going on which made the library less desirable than usual. Who wanted to read books on rope when there were stories and fairytales being told? Ainsley couldn't bring herself to sit there and read under such circumstances and found herself with one last choice. There was one place she could go that there was no way anything would disturb her: Hypnos.
Jolting behind the library the child quickly powered up into Hypnos before anyone could take notice of her. The bag that had fallen onto the ground in her powering up was scooped up and her senshi phone was taken out. She concentrated, pressing the button on her phone as she willed herself back to her asteroid. She really wanted to go, but as a side will she hoped direly that she wouldn't end up in the ocean this time.
She didn't take traveling magically as well as she would like so when she landed on the ground with a thump her eyes finally shot open, her head swinging around as she made sure she wasn't in the ocean. It was kind of obvious given she was not drowning but it was a subconscious reaction to her first visit here more than anything else. It wasn't the ocean though, in fact, she couldn't see the ocean. The only thing she could see were cliffs of mountains.
It was amazing! Hypnos was in awe at the sky which seemed to glitter with stars and what seemed to be ice. She'd never been to this area of her asteroid before but it was quite cozy. There was lush grass to sit on and tall trees to keep the sun directly off her. The temperate weather thanks to the desert climate made it quite warm and Hypnos immediately was thankful that her outfit changed to her fuku from her winter clothes when she powered up.
This would be perfect! So perfect that she even had had a blanket in her backpack that she brought just in case it got a little too chilly out at the park. She spread it out along the ground under a large tree and flopped herself over it. She was smiling, rolling around until she was flat on her back with the sky above her. It was comfy, so much better than it would have been if she was just on the grass.
She stayed there for awhile before she decided that it was time to finally get to work! She had no one to bug her (or she hoped so) and soon she dug the books out of her backpack and spread around her. She would look at them one by one, and slowly the facts would swell around her mind like space and stars.

A couple of hours had passed before Hypnos finally decided to put the books down for a bit and take a break. Her hours here had been much nicer than it would have been if she was in the park on Earth, both her body and mind thankful for her decision in coming here. There was no one passing by to distract her but also it was warm enough to be late summer.
There were a few things she could do while in a foreign land while she took a break from her study and at the top of her list of things to do was having a snack. She had packed several things for her day out from a sandwich to some sliced fruit to a few peanut butter cookies, and her decision was a simple one for that very reason. There was an order to eat food in which required her to eat the sandwich first, then the fruit and finally the cookies should she choose to make it all the way down the pyramid.
With the sandwich finished, Hypnos decided that she wanted to stretch her legs and explore for a bit. She didn't know what time it was, and that probably made things more difficult with keeping a good schedule but what fun was it coming to a foreign asteroid when you didn't even bother to look around? It was different than it was the first two times she had come here. There was no ocean this time, and instead of being on top of the mountain she was now inside the valley area. It was like slowly but surely she was making it further and further from the ocean and into the heart of the asteroid.
There was sand in some areas but mostly it was grass and cliffs. She didn't know which was north or which way was south but near where she left her things was a strange looking cliff marker that reminded her where it was. It may not have been foolproof but Hypnos wasn't going to let that stop her. She just kept walking, her eyes looking around with curiosity. It was beautiful here, like its own little paradise.
Not everything was a paradise though. The further she walked, the more it felt like she was walking into a ruined city. It was exactly what she was doing though... or at least the outskirts of a ruined city. Each step she took brought her deeper and deeper into the past. To the left there were broken pots and to the right there was stacks of various items that had a purpose that alluded her. The mystery of them did not pass by her unnoticed though, causing the child to wobble her way over to them.
Some of the items were crates, other items were locked chests. The crates seemed like an impossible feat but the chests were quite pretty. They were decorated with moons, stars and some writing that Hypnos couldn't understand. All of them were locked, and none of them locks budged even when she pulled on them. It was fruitless and Hypnos sighed as she forced herself away from them.
"I wonder what's inside of them?" She asked herself, her slippers moving backward as her eyes looked at her footsteps in the sand. It was probably time to be heading back. She had a lot more work to do and she wanted to make use of it the best she could. Her slippers twisted on something when she went to move forward though, causing her to trip and fall forward with a yelp. She didn't know what it was but quickly her hands twirled around until they reached down to her feet.
It was rope! It was strange, but also sort of exciting. Maybe she could use it? There was no telling what use really old rope would be but it wasn't very much so maybe she could just practice with it or incorporate it somehow with her net. It wouldn't take long to gather up with its size and soon Hypnos was wandering back to where she'd left her things, her body flopping back down on the blanket after she tucked the rope away. It was time to continue her efforts!
