I won a brat in the Art Contest?!

DUDE!

Welcome to my quest thread for an Incantation of the Spirit.
This is one of the few, if the only quest thread I'll have
whose goal is to somehow get a pet from the aforementioned shop
(Link can be found below).

As for what kind of pet, a hellhound spirit...
And as for how I plan to try and get one,
by any means possible;
which will equate to me saving up
all sorts of gaian munnies
and possibly entice her with art too
(Unlikely, but it doesn't kill small kittens to try.)

If you don't know what a Spirit is, visit the main thread located here:

Known by many different names across the globe, these creatures are more commonly known as 'hellhounds'(Or more easily recognized as such). Other such names are as follows; Mauthe Dog, Gwyglli, Black Dog, Death-Hound, Gurt Dog, Old Shuck, Devil's Dandy Dogs, Wisht Hound, Padfoot, Hooter, Moddey Doo, Black Shag, Barghest, and many other names.

A great many of the physical descriptions concerning the hellhounds differentiate between cultures but a few of the similarities tend to add up to an abnormally large, black shaggy dog, with glowing eyes, and a howl that forever warns of impending doom- be it at their design or anothers.

But a few of many written interpretations of the Mauthe Dogs:

Wikipedia
"Hellhounds are a breed of demon footsoldiers of dog-like features bred during the Makhash Wars. This species became infamous for its habit of devouring the brains of its victims."

Hellhounds are covered in brown fur, have short tails and yellow eyes. They also walk on four legs.

Hellhounds kill through biting and mauling. Once the victim is dead, they proceed to devour its brains. Brains are the only food these demons consume."
-Wikipedia

Encyclopedia Mythica
"A monstrous dog with huge teeth and claws from the area around Yorkshire, northern England. It only appears at night. People believe that anyone who sees the dog clearly will die soon after the encounter. In Wales, they have the red-eyed Gwyllgi, the Dog of Darkness. On the Isle of Man it is called Mauthe Dog.

A ghostly black spaniel that hunted Peel Castle (Isle of Man) for many years. It used to enter the guard room as soon as the candles were lighted and leave at daybreak. While it was present, the guards would perform their nightly duties but forebore all oaths and profane talk. One night, a drunken guard, from bravado, performed the rounds alone. He lost his speech and died in three days. The dog has never appear again.

In 1871, during excavations, the bones of Simon, Bishop of Sodor and Man (died 1247) were uncovered, with the bones of a dog at his feet."
-Encyclopedia Mythica

At the Edge Archive
"Another belief is that there are ghostly black dogs, the size of large retrievers, about the fields at night, that these dogs are generally near gates and stiles, and are of such a forbidding aspect that no one dare venture to pass them, and that it means death to shout at them. In some places the spectral dog is named "Shuck" and is said to be headless."
-At the Edge Archive

But a few of many visual interpretations of the Black Dogs:

As the legends tell, catching a glimpse of the Black Dog is a warning of another's impending doom... But then, what warnings do the legends speak of when a hellhound appears and comes to stay?

Admittedly, Desmond's life has never been that great, let alone normal... but it has never been particularly horrifying. Until recently, when Barghest took on the guise of flesh and blood, within the body of an infant. True, the hellhound child has done none of the actual damage himself- but he does appear to be attracting it with his continual presence alone.

Such an old tale about the Black Shag appearing to foretell a person's doom, is naturally something to doubt. It was something Desmond doubted very much, and then very little with each passing day since his promotion.

A promotion to a newly formed position within the LKI that is a near mirror-copy of the human police's homicide unit. A new title, slightly better pay, and now he not only has to identify which monster was responsible for each bloodbath, he must now catch and subdue them.

Such a branch, and such a promotion did not come into existence until Barghest arrived in his new form. The number of new, non-human murders waiting to be solved and brought to justice did not grow so high so fast until Barghest opened those large, almost unseeing fog-colored eyes. The number of troubles did not grow so high on Desmond Baits list until the little hellhound smiled, baring sharp teeth perfect for ripping flesh from bone.

No... Desmond's troubles had never been so many until Barghest the hellhound took on a new form and sought to make a home within his life.

Something a Little More Homey...

The difficulties Desmond has while in possession of Barghest continue to grow as the days come and go. And we're not discussing just the workplace problems, not even the sudden influx of murders, both human and monster. No, these troubles are centered a little more closer to home; like how Desmond is becoming ever more desperate for a stable babysitter.

Everyone in his neighborhood, and several of his coworkers had now refused to set foot in his home- so consistently healthy dinners was now a thing of the past. For both him and the brat of child he was now most unfortunately saddled with. His cat Cylus openly attacks him and his beloved furniture, without warning or due cause- ever since the several, failed attempts at either getting Cylus to eat(or babysit, neither Desmond or his cat were quite sure,) Barghest during a particularly trying week at work.

Animal Control will no longer accept his calls concerning either his cat(Cylus), or his dog(Barghest). In fact, Animal Control services has both his home, and his cell phone numbers on their block list. A first in the entire history of ACUSA(Animal Control of the United States of America), he'd even got a little commemorate pin in the mail because of it.

Work, babysitters, healthy meal deprivation, ACUSA, the pending doom of his furniture, and legs aside...

Desmond had been growing increasingly clumsy as of late.

Barghest and His First Crime Scene
Common Occurrences

the Focal Point of Persistent Concern...

As time passes, Barghest grows more fond of his caretaker, but as his fondness grows, so do the number of accidents or bouts of clumsiness, that Desmond endures; each one steadily becoming more severe than the last.

Barghest is, in fact illiterate, despite the halting attempts made by Desmond at formal and informal education. Because of this, he uneasily learns a bit about his species origins over time... He learns that he is the source of Desmond's constant 'doom'. If it continues, by the time he reaches full maturity, Desmond will die.

So Barghest needs to learn how to control his abilities.

But how can a beast control something that is beyond instinctual, that is merely natural? Simply present without any form of direction, thought, or desire? He has to control a part of himself that is as innocuous and effortless as the blood running through ones veins.

But you can't reverse the flow of your blood, or how fast or slow it flows... can you?

If such a thing is even possible, would Barghest even desire to make any attempts at restraining himself? To, for lack of a better wording- tame himself for the sake of his caretaker Desmond?

What it all boils down to at the end of the road is simply this; the life of Desmond, or freedom?

Desmond Baits.........................................................LKI Specialist
User Image
Sex:Male
Age:32
Hght:5'9ft
Wght:215lbs

Works For: *Left Kingdom Investigations (LKI "Nickles" / "Monster Police")

General Appearance: He has wavy, dark-brown hair that has long since outgrown its original cut, lightly tanned skin, and dark circles forever line his sharp blue/gray eyes. His general build is fit, with noticeable muscle definition. Desmond has a grand total of five ear piercings, three tattoos, and tends to dress in simple black(and occassionally varying shades of blue) clothes.

Basic Personality: Once upon a time he was careless, overly rude, sarcastic, and spiteful to anyone and everyone out of sheer habit. Over time, that changed- Desmond became quieter as he aged, his tongue no less scathing, but used with more discretion. He does not waste words and has little to no sympathy for those in emotional crisis or turmoil for he often sees no reason in such asinine displays. Overall, he is described as a cold, cruel, and unfeeling b*****d who cares for nothing but his work... few have been wrong about such an assumption.

Brief History: At a very young age, Desmond had to grow up very fast, in order to cope with the death of his mother so he could then take care of his broken father. It is known that Baits has made a staunch habit of ignoring, or otherwise refusing to believe in the existence of spirits or otherworldly entities that could not be classified as 'real' or of physical being- although the why of it is currently unknown... This perhaps may relate to Desmond's being followed by the spirit of a long-dead species known as the hellhound, since birth- but nothing has been proven thus far.

Regardless, this somewhat ignorant frame of mind has made him an excellent LKI Specialist; since Mr. Baits refuses any metaphysical or supernatural explainations it makes him a strong asset to the agency when it comes to creature classification. It is because of his refusal of all things metaphysical that he, and a select few of other specialists that share a similar frame of mind- are capable of discerning the two different types of evidence that the monsters leave behind; the *andrest, and fleskrest.

(more to be added)

Additional: Average strength, speed, agility, endurance, and so on and so forth; Desmond makes for your average man, except for his eyesight. An average person usually has 20/20 eyesight, where they see an object at twenty feet away, and it to them, it looks twenty feet away, or some such; a better example would be someone that has 10/20 vision- where they see an object at ten feet, and to them, they see it as if it's twenty feet away. Desmond Baits possesses 20/.03 vision, where he see's an object at twenty feet away, as if it were three inches from his face. This near-microscopic field of vision is a great asset, to be sure, but out of the workplace, it is often more trouble than it's worth. He wears glasses a majority of the time to see things 'normally' and has recently been looking into corrective laser eye surgery.
(Unsure if I'll keep this particular trait, since it may end up being more troublesome, depending.)

Barghest...............................................................................Hellhound

User ImageSex:Male
Age: unknown; suspected to be one of the First Ones
Hght: 4'6ft (in original form, sitting) and 6'3ft (in IotS form, standing)
Wght: 176lbs (in original form) and 284lbs (in IotS form)

General Appearance: His original form is that of a large, black beast of a dog covered in thick fur, glowing white eyes, sharp teeth, and carrying number of scars upon his battleworn body... he also has a patch of large 'spikes' along the width of his shoulders to trail just a ways down his spine to taper off mid-back. The 'spikes' are asimilar to scales in how they layer over one another; they can be raised or lowered depending on the situation.

In his IotS form, Barghest still has the same patch of scale-like spikes, thick bushy tail, and torn dog ears. The rest is jet black skin with the same scars, clawed hands and feet, long- stylized black and white hair, 'sightless' fog colored eyes, and teeth entirely too sharp and pointy to pass off as normal.

Basic Personality: A practical yet ruthless creature, Barghest does not act without justification or motivation. If he feels threatened, he will attack in order to defend himself. Should he come upon a hazardous moment, perhaps a hostage situation, or an overly hostile environment filled with according individuals- Barghest will do nothing to help or hinder the individuals involved despite his capabilities in being able to, as long as he is not threatened. However, he can be enticed to participate if he can be offered something of equal value in exchange. For he can be a rather diplomatic and fair individual (By monster standards, that is.), but when it is time to put aside such... diplomacy, Barghest will enforce his overall decisions by claw and fang.

Brief History: Once upon a time Barghest was the alpha male of a large hellhound pack... (Where he naturally acquired the majority of the scars he now carries.) Rumored to have been one of the largest, and most bloodthirsty collection of mauthe dogs ever heard of. As rumors come and go, so did the species of the hellhound- Barghest being no different when it came to the extinction of the peculiar race of demon dog.

User ImageLittle else is known about this creature's personal history- due to the already less than communicative nature of dogs in general. It helps none at all since Barghest has been rendered a flesh and blood infant... in a relatively humanoid form. (It is assumed that with this new form, his previous memories have been either erased, or forced into the further recesses of the young creature's mind.)

Basic Abilities: Overall, Barghest has heightened senses of sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch. His 'sixth sense' is also much stronger than average animals(predominantly pertaining to the areas of intuition, and an almost precognitive ability of 'knowing' things before they happen- although he does not know specifically, he just has a heightened sense or feel of it.) In addition to heightened senses, there is the superior strength, stamina, and power to go right along with it- somewhat more of a natural, animalistic ability due to his physique and constant exercise though.

Uhyrer Abilities: His 'otherworldly' abilities are few and basically indirectly offensive and defensive types of 'magics' or 'powers'. The first is his ability to shadow blend, he is not particularly great at the skill, but he uses it when necessary well enough.

The second talent or 'power' is to be able to temporarily paralyze a creature in fear with the 'baying' or 'howling'. Such an ability is often referred to as the Gwyglli Howl or the Belling Bark.

The third is a relatively commonplace ability amongst the canid branch of the Left Kingdom; simply referred to as 'Blocked' or Seele Blockierte. It's classified as a psychic ability, resembling a natural shielding of ones' self from the prying minds of others. Such an innate talent is strong amongst the hellhound species for reasons unknown, but it has been theorized that the mental shielding had been so great due to the lack of pupils that was found to have been a rather distinctive, identifying trait to the hellhound... They believe that perhaps it is something akin to the saying "Eyes are a window to the soul." And since the dogs of doom lacked a very key aspect in regards to the physical makeup of eyes, it is then assumed that such is the reason for possessing such power when it comes to protecting ones mind and/or soul from outside intrusion.

The last is a natural talent reserved strictly to the hellhound species- and that's the ability to bring doom, death, or injury upon another creature by visiting them directly or just by being nearby. The extent of such an unusual ability varies from mauthe to mauthe- mostly this natural talent inflicts minor 'doom' or 'injury' upon the intended victim; usually displayed by an unexplained case of clumsiness by the victim or said victim becoming the target of accidents. The victims actual dying depends on the age, strength, and overall will/desire of the dog- and when it appears before the target.

Limitations: Despite being an otherwordly, sentient creature, Barghest is still very much an 'animal' or 'monster'. As such he does not comprehend a great many things most would take for granted. Much of what makes up human society today makes no sense to him, it is simply beyond his comprehension as a single minded creature. Because of this, he is viewed as narrow-minded, infantile, or a simply cruel beast for being what he is- an animal ruled by instinct. His limitations or weaknesses lay predominantly within the mind than within the physical body...

Baser Instincts and Impulses

Lack of Human Comprehension

Singular Mentality

Lack of Human Morality. He is not human, he is an animal, a beast of myth and lore- a monster. As such, he is not bound nor ingrained with any of the cultural mores developed by humans around the world. His views on life, death, and all that lay between- vary greatly from what we humans are taught as children. So it may come as a surprise or shock to some when he acts accordingly with his inherent nature.

Since he is so bestial, he comes across as sociopathic, and simple-minded (if not retarded,) depending on ones view or interpretation. As a simple creature, he can be tricked or deceived by a sly or clever human...

Along with these mental weaknesses or limitations, being of canine origins, Barghest is colorblind- forever viewing the world in neutral colors. Because of this, he has trouble with visual depth perception despite having very keen eyesight; for everything often appears 'flat', or very 2D unless he makes a thorough inspection with his other senses. Which then brings us to both his greatest strength and weakness, Barghest's sense of smell. As a beast, he relies heavily on scents, it helps him to navigate throughout the entirety of the modern world, due to such a thing, he possesses a great sense of smell... which can easily be used against him if he is not careful to either evade or guard against it.

The subject title 'Old Dog' refers to the very first concept I developed concerning my chosen 'spirit' for this sextacular petshop I've been stalking since it first popped up- and semi-actively questing for. Over time the concept and characters will change and evolve bit by bit to better fit the environment and setting of the shop and RP-world. (So as to possibly increase chances of achieving my goal, and if/when it should happen, that I'll be able to join in to roleplay successfully...in public aka teh shop or group RP threads.)

teh entry
CONTEST ENTRY

I've always been told, that to an extent, everything is alive- even when it dies... that it just becomes something different, less real to the human eye but no less alive. Although, when you're seven, and lose your mother to a gruesome murder, you put a little less stock in fairy tales and live closer to the flesh and bone of things trying to take cold comfort from a broken man that once could've been called a father. It's only as I grew that I began to learn different, or realized that I could not keep my blue eyes closed so tightly.

Sounds of growling, more curiosity than hostile intention echoed against my skin. If I were to take the time to think on it, I wouldn't actually be hearing the sound. Unimportant to think of at the moment, not when I was working.

I would like to say I learned such a thing gradually, over a period of time where I could grow to accept it as a man, and as a human being. Unfortunately I was not granted such a slow and pleasant time of spiritual growth; not while I was staring down at the bloodied remains of one Elizabeth McKalyn and her two children, Isaac and Cathlene.

A brush of cold impatience upon the back of my shoulder. I bristled at the sensation but otherwise ignored it, trying to make my eyes see something more descriptive, something other than blood and so much meat.

My mind was staunchly refusing to make sense of the scene that lay before me, but that was ok; I wasn't here to solve the murders. I was here to determine whether or not it had relations to monsters, and, if so, what kind. After that I was to provide any and all information I may have upon the species that would help to track down the one responsible.

The act of kneeling isn't much of an art or skill, but when you're trying to keep the blood off your clothes and only on the plastic coverings worn over your boots, it becomes one. I sat back on my heels, balancing as best as I could while trying to ignore that cold weight pressing against the back of my skull. It was persistant that I acknowledge it, always had been.

But now wasn't the time, not when I was finally starting to see bits and pieces of what lay before me- both literally and figuratively. A child's arm lay a foot away from where I knelt, white and bright against the cooling blood. The scene was still fresh, so the ragged clawmarks along the bit of corpse made for easier study.

They were large, torn wide across the length, the limb thoroughly chewed on one end. Not quite a feeding yet not a deliberate attack- canine. I didn't raise a latex-covered hand to touch it, I did not need to touch it, nor did I want to. Who would?

I mumbled as much out loud to the standing officers, a few nods, others... delicately crafted blank looks. You needed that look to hide what you couldn't handle.

I raised my eyes, above what I wasn't yet ready to absorb, and looked instead at the walls, splattered in what I knew was not red paint. Against the white-stained walls I studied the red smears, seeing red slashmarks and red half-prints of an animal. Further signs of canine, maybe dog; too large to be average and too warped to fall into the Right Kingdom. So it was a canine of the left, upper level, and with few natural predators.

The prints were many and they were scattered everywhere throughout the house, dissappearing just outside the range of the back porch, lost amidst the sounds of water slapping earth. The cold weight pressed further against the back of me since I'd never deigned to give it the attention of my front.

Rain had a tendency to make things dissappear.

I didn't want to look at the main part of the crime scene, the clues would be the same no matter how many different pieces I'd look at. But there was one thing rather distinct about all of this, the house had a cold feel to it. The kind of cold a place is left with once the most of it had been made. The 'most' of it had never been something joyous. It was then my eyes caught sight of it, the telltale sign that eliminated all possible monsters save the one.

I turned from the entirety of the scene and looked at it, stared at what I'd refused to see for a very long time. What I saw wasn't fully visible, parts of it still in shadow, other parts transparent. The gist of what floated before me was a large black dog with sightless eyes.

It was bizarre... because what I'd seen previously couldn't be possible, these particular monsters were extinct; the facts, signs, and evidence stated otherwise.

This was the work of the Gwyllgi, the Choin Dubh, Dogs of the Wild Hunt...

Hellhounds.

The apparition tossed its head back and bayed.

As you've noticed, I use a lot of strange and purely fictional terms. Mostly I make these things up using english, other times, not. So You'll find all sorts of strange definitions in this little post as I further construct the world in which Desmond and Barghest originate.

andrest & fleskrest: roughly 'spirit residue' and 'flesh residue'; two different types of 'hard' evidence that all Left Kingdom creatures leave behind.

First Ones: A large gathering of 'otherworldly' creatures that made themselves known to the human world in the early 1820's for reasons unknown. At the time, the study of those seemingly nightmarish creatures was scarcely into its first stages of development and an exact record of what species was present during this first appearance was never recorded.

Gwyglli Howl or Belling Bark: A canine howl/baying used to paralyze another creature in fear long enough to attack. It is often used as a scare tactic, intimidation technique amongst rivaling packs, or as a pre-emptive strike against an enemy or food. It is not a common ability or skill easily mastered by any Uhyrer species outside of hellhounds- near impossible outside of the canid branch.

Left Kingdom: The second version/copy/division of the first Animal Kingdom; near identical in the sheer polar-opposition- this new Kingdom could not be merged with the first. So the dual Kingdoms were given a paired name Left and Right Kingdoms; the left representing the 'dark', 'unholy', and/or 'monstrous' creatures. The Right representing the 'light', 'pure', and/or 'normal' creatures and animals that we knew before the discovery of The First Ones in the early 1820's.

Left Kingdom Investigations: A high ranking agency specializied in taking care of any unsightly messes, disturbances, and or lawbreaking that occurs should any creature categorized under the Left Animal Kingdom be identified and reported. They are generally responsible for policing outbreaks and disputes amongst the 'monsters' as well as basic upkeep/cleanup duty when large-scale crimes or offenses are comitted.

Over time, the agency has garnered a vast amount of nicknames for the work they perform; the most commonly used one happens to be 'Nickles', the exact why of it is still unknown but is suspected to somehow relate to the backwards pronunciation of the abreviated name of the agency itself.

Seele Blockierte: Roughly; 'Soul Blocked', it's a form of mental or psychic protection common amongst the canine monsters in the Left Kingdom. It is a natural ability that prevents others with or without mind/soul intrusive talents from gaining access/insight to the creatures mind or soul. If one tried to get passed the natural block, they would come across the sensation of being pulled up short or having run into some sort of barrier or wall. The level of strength of the ability varies between each species but ultimately grows stronger with age. The ability is most superior within the hellhound species, possible reasons are many, but none know for sure.

Shadow Blend: A rather common ability amongst the Uhyrer in which the creature 'disappears' from within plain sight by stepping into a shadowy area. Depending on the species, and how dark the area, a creature can be capable of total invisibility and intangiability. But in most cases, it is a form of camouflage used to prevent predators from finding prey.

*Nicknames: Various nicknames pertaining to the 'other' side of the animal kingdoms have surfaced worldwide; the most common usage is the word 'monsters'... which is predominantly spoken in english and norwegian(uhyrer). Others have come and gone, most having branched out and tend to relate more specifically to a species within the overall kingdom.

These are links I tend to use for various reasons, be it translation, creature research, reference imgs/pictures, and so on and so forth. This is more for me to find my links than for any other person, but if you want to use 'em, or already do, I dun care XD.
