Beloved Lunatic

PostPosted: Mon Oct 30, 2006 2:11 pm

Hey there, kids! I'm Ioyla, but you can call me Sam. This is my IotS quest for the spirit of Lunacy. Huzzah! Please keep your hands and feet inside the cart at all times.

And hey, if I get Sophie, I might revamp this b***h for a new concept. woot. heart

Sophia is based loosely off of Neil Gaiman's character Delirium from the SEXTASTICULAR graphic novels, The Sandman. I took Del's basic idea and tweaked it around, alot. I hope you guyth don't think I'm commiting copyright infringement or anything! ^^;

updates:
10/30: started my quest! <3
11/1: to avoid confusion on words and definitions, I've changed the spirit from delirium to lunacy.

11/7: I've revamped Sophie's profile just a bit; gave it some more detail and whatnot. Still lacking a personality, but that will be written later today. :3 also, I intend to participate in the upcoming auction, and I expect the bids to be high. XD;
11/8: just posted Sophie's personality! I'm quite proud of it, if I do say so m'self; I used the original profile format I had in the beginning, since it's smaller and therefor takes less time to read; also, me bidding in the auction might not happen after all: word has gotten to me that some big names will be bidding, so I've sort of given up on that for the time being. sweatdrop
11/9: again, to avoid confusion (and even the smallest possible inkling of drama), I've changed Sophie's hair from blonde with black tips to vibrant purple~ heart
3/04: I fixed Sophia's personalty by adding more detail and a little info on why she's so damn weird. WHOOP heart
3/06: big update! I completely changed Sophia's appearance~ I know, I do that alot XD But this time it's something I'm actually pretty proud of so YEY <3
3/07: OMG I WIN! I did another fix on Sophia's personality, except this time it's even MORE detailed~~ I'm really proud of this one XD
4/15: Sophie's box has been added, giggitygoo!
4/27: Removed the box section to work on it~
3/19: MAAAAN, I haven't been here in a hot minute! After some perilous thought (PERILOUS I TELL YOU), I'm kind of working on a new concept for Sophie. Honestly, the fact that I was "reworking" an already well-established literary character because I was too goddamn lazy to think up something myself made me really uncomfortable. So! Nowww I'm thinking on the concept of the spirit of chaos. I'll be posting some ideas soon, but just give the general idea a quick thought. And stuff. heart

    name Sophia
    gender Female
    spirit Chaos
hair Inky black with light purple tips; long (reaches mid-back), unruly and messy with cowlicks; usually found either down or piled atop her head, held together with hairclips, scrunchies, and the occasional hairstick
eyes Rainbow-hued irises that are constantly swirling and changing colors
    skintone Pale peach
distinguishing marks Rainbow swirl markings on her hands and feet; three coal-black dots beneath both eyes in a straight line
personality Sophia is definitely what some people may call a double-sided coin. When completely alone (and absolutely sure of the fact), she is cheery and expressive and plays with her toys. She enjoys cracking nonsensical jokes, holding conversations with inanimate objects, dressing in funky and tacky outfits, and exploring the dark corners of her closet, although she is still too terrified to explore at night, what with the strange monster lurking in the shadows. She is not afraid to express the thoughts in her head, no matter how loopy they are (who will judge her? her giant stuffed tiger? the potted plant?). Alone, Sophia is extroverted and generally enjoyable to be around, even though no one is actually around.

Around people is a completely different story. When thrust into a situation that involves other people, including her own family, Sophie withdrawls into herself and becomes a nervous, panicky, stuttering young girl. She flinches when touched and is convinced that the people around are laughing at her. She spends more time picking at the flesh around her fingers than actually speaking at all. Sophie does not make eye contact and shies away when people come too close. This emotional malfunction makes it difficult for her to socialize, so she ends up choosing not to in the long run.

Because of her spirit origin, Sophia exists in a constant dream-like state. After being a spirit for so long, her perception of the real world is skewered, but the "mental stutter-steps" brought on by almost-constant hallucinations (ranging in intensity from little daydreams to full on waking nightmares) have forced Sophia to believe that what she sees is the actual thing: the giant crows pecking her bedroom apart? Real. The decayed, bloated corpses crawling out of the pond behind her house? Real. The constant feeling of being watched by the family portraits hung over various walls? 100% real. Sophia raises no question because she does not know any better.

When coaxed into finally talking, Sophia's social awkwardness and inability to carry a decent conversation become almost too much to bear, leading to uncomfortable moments and blank stares. The mental filter that holds back her bizarre thoughts is on a permanent hiatus: whatever she thinks, she will say.

She is naieve, innocent and easy to upset, but wickedly curious at the same time. If not specifically guided, she will easily climb into stranger's cars or poke around in a hornet's nest.

likes Sun dresses, thunderstorms, swimming, colors, milk, cherries, lizards, bugs, fish, Saltine sandwiches, violins, buttons, ribbons
dislikes Static, ballpoint pens, cats, constricting clothing, deep silences, secrets, very bright sunlight, humidity, the lake behind her house, pins and needles, untangling knots, cinnamon sticks
    random tidbits
      shadow
Sophia's shadow, whom she has named Salvador Onslow Percival Harold Ingmar Appleseed III, is quite the finicky being. When it's not off doing its own thing, like taking walks or painting "shadow pictures", it can usually be found napping in Sophie's bed while its owner is out and about. Sophia sometimes speaks with her shadow, often carrying on long and detailed conversations. Whether or not her whismically-named shadow responds remains a mystery.
voice Quiet and whispery, Sophie's voice trips and falls over itself. The things she said could not be the only thing considered strange; her very voice loops, twirls, and stumbles, fluxuating in intensity and volume. If getting excited, Sophie raises her voice in a swirling crescendo, and when she reaches the climax of her statement, her voice gently drifts back down until it's nothing but a whisper.
fingerprints Quite possibly the sanest thing about Sophia is her fingerprints: while everything else about her is distorted and strange, her fingerprints are straight, rigid lines that don't smear at all. Sophie seems quite proud of her perfect prints.

    Name: Ioyla Infriti
    Nickname: 'Yola
    Font Color:
    Gray
    Date of Birth: o6.o8.87
    Race: Demon/Abomination
    Height: 5'3''
    Weight: 120 lbs.
    Eye color: Bright gray.
    Hair color: Brown.
    Skin tone: Caucasian; pale.
Family: One mother, Infriti; one brother, Iliran; one adopted child, Ilistala.
Weapon of choice: Fire (absolute last resort), claws, sharp teeth.
Special abilities: Having grown up in Gaia and not Hell, Ioyla doesn't have the same abilities as other demons. She's able to create and manipulate fire, plus her heightened senses, but that's about it. She's perfectly fine with being a below average demon, or an above average human; it all depends on how you look at it.
Distinguishing features: Short demon horns, pointy ears, two dark vertical markings on her cheeks.

Personality: With a penchant for outlandish clothes (usually far too big and far too colorful for her own good), the super power of not being able to stand still for more than twenty-seven seconds, and a potty mouth that could make a sailor blush, Ioyla probably isn't a force to be reckoned with. Her careless attitude could be mistaken for laziness, and her accent, impossible to place, for stupidity. She's a loud, obnoxious, hyperactive demon, often found shrieking her head off, even in the middle of a sentence. She remains a mystery, mentally and spiritually (and perhaps even physically), to all but her closest friends.

History: Ioyla's mother, Infriti, was an Abomination, a race of soldier demons existing only to serve Lucifer in war and protection. For many millennia, the Abominations proudly fought for Lucifer, destroying any and all enemies that threatened Hell. They were faithful and loyal and they loved their Lord.

But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. There was a rebellion between Abominations: some wanted to continue serving Lucifer, ever-faithful and always loving, but others wanted more; they wanted power and a place in Hell, rather than seen as some lowly soldier. A war broke out in Hell, one that many said might compare to the one between Lucifer and God so long, long ago. Infriti--as well as her only son, Iliran, a handsome young demon--fought for the side that craved authority, and they lost.

Lucifer, furious with his once-unfailing army, threw every demon who went against him out of Hell. He scattered each and every one of them across different dimensions, and they were to spend the rest of the world's run there. When the time had come for their world to end, they were to return to Hell and wait outside the gates for the rest of forever.
Infriti ended up in Gaia, and that seemed more like Hell to the warrior demon than her old home.

She could hardly stand the happy-go-lucky land of Gaia. It was sickeningly adorable, with many different races of people and beings all living together, usually peacefully. Iliran seperated from his mother to work in Durem, in a small library. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

Infriti moved to Barton Town to take up a job as a store clerk in the Jewelry Shop under Agatha's then-young watchful eye. But years passed, and after a long time of saving money, Infriti quit her job and moved to Aekea. There, she met another demon: Iladar. They fell in love--if demons can love--and got married. Together, Iladar and Infriti lived peacefully for several years, and everything was good for a while.

But Lucifer found Iladar, and he sent him back to his own prison. Infriti was heartbroken until she found out she was pregnant with a baby girl, Ioyla. She cared for her child as best as a single mother could, and finally, Ioyla was born.

Ioyla was a tiny, curious little fire demon, the kind that could never be satisfied with what she had in her hands; she always wanted to see what was new, what was next, what was there. Infriti realized that she was going to have to start working again, so she took a job in Durem, working at the Von Helson mansion as security. But there was no one to watch her child, so Infriti brought Ioyla with her to work every day.

There, in Durem, Ioyla met Eight, and the two bonded quickly and closely. They grew up together, laughing, crying, and screaming (moreso screaming). But as the years went by, the two grew apart, and when she was old enough, Ioyla spent her time moving all about Gaia, farther and farther away from her old companion. Recently, however, the duo have come back together, laughing, crying, and screaming (still moreso screaming).

Likes: Sleeping, eating, sleeping, being lazy, candy, playing in the rain, snowball fights, sleeping, puppies, kittens, catching fireflies, beef stew, clean kitty litter, kungfu movies, sharp cheeses, sleeping, hats, the taste of pennies, trailer-park quesadillas, soda, biting her nails, movies, juice, apples, oranges, sleeping, small children (although that's a secret!)

Dislikes: Math, mean people, being lied to, bugs, spiders, icky things, slimey s**t, the morning, waking up early, ghosts, the dark, having long nails, Devils, spoiled milk, botched magic tricks, being poor, the po-leese, cold weather, the IRS, paying her taxes, doing boring grownup s**t, physical work, being caught singing in the shower, Indian food, Disney movies, diet sodas, loud parrots, crying babies, cleaning up after herself, cleaning up in general

I declare this open for crits? XD
PostPosted: Mon Oct 30, 2006 10:16 pm

It's a very nice start 3nodding

But you should elaborate more on your IoTS questy child to make for better critiques and such.

Overall I'm not sure you should use the essence or spirit of 'delirium' for the character you've created. Delirium itself refers to -

1: a more or less temporary disorder of the mental faculties, as in fevers, disturbances of consciousness, or intoxication, characterized by restlessness, excitement, delusions, hallucinations, etc.

2: a state of violent excitement or emotion.

(swiped from dictionary.com)

Generally delirium is a somewhat watered down version of insanity. The character you've created has a very different personality, style, and appearance from that- Sophia is overall a more controlled and down-to-earth sane character. She'd fit more closely to the terms of 'insecurity', 'quiet mystery', 'whispers', and other such things.

It ain't bad for a start, and I hope I haven't come across as too offensive or anything, but y'declared yourself open for crits so I figured I'd give you an honest one. 3nodding

Yeah, I admit my current concept could use some more filling out. ^^ I honestly just started working on her yesterday, so... *EXCUSEEXCUSEEXCUSE* XD;

But! With the spirit of delirium, I'm not going for the straight-lined, exact meaning of delirium, but the broader sense: crazyness. But yeah, I can see how my wording wasn't exactly good; I just don't want to use a word like insanity or whatever. I'll go bop around a thesaurus later today. heart

And also, I haven't finished fleshing out Sophie's personality. I intend to make her the quiet kind of crazy, not loud and in yo fayse. Dig it? 3nodding

BUT RAAH! Thank you for the crit! I'll scope around the subforum for yours when I get home from school. <3

HAY.

Sophie's MY name.

And...

Like...

...delirium is cool.

SO ALL IS WELL. heart

I thought delirium could also be sickness? Seeing things? Delirium is usually more subtle than insanity, isn't it? I could be wrong, but that's okay.

OMG HEY DERE u no mah name already talk2hand heart heart

When I think of the word delirium, I first think of insanity. My second choice would be hallucinating because you're sick. With like, a superflu. hi@the stand that I'm reading, homie. :C

But I was chilling around a thesaurus yesterday, and I thought the word lunacy would be a better word than delirium. Sooo...! I'm gonna change the quest/spirit from delirium to lunacy. ayuh. :3

Bumpin this mofugga up! Reworked Sophie's profile, added a new physical feature (that has a Deeper Meaning; oooo, spooky!), in the process of writing her personality, and maybe even her history. Blahblahblah! heart

Also, preparing for the predictably intense auction coming up on Friday! Woowoo, definately bidding my OMG! heart heart

Maybe Sophia could be sarcastic? That occurs to me when I think of lunacy.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 07, 2006 5:03 pm

Nah, I apply a more quiet, too-sensitive, naieve sort of personality to the lunacy I picture for Sophia. 3nodding But thanks for your comment! Maybe she'll have some sort of funky personality if/when she gets older~ ninja
