The Wild Hunt: a supernatural group of huntsmen with the accoutrements of hunting, horses, hounds, etc., in mad pursuit across the skies. What they hunt changes by regional permutations of the tale, but they are chaotic, nigh-impossible to control, and deeply wild.

The variant of the Wild Hunt legend that I favor for this child's tale is that of the hunt as a joyous and untamed group, free and uncontrollable, who chase their quarry down across the sky, riding in the wildness of storms. Those who can control the Hunt or set them on a particular target are few, and the words of power that can do this are taboo and hidden. To deliberately set the Hunt on an innocent soul is an act that grants a one-way ticket to Hell in the afterlife.

For the Wild Hunt, there is no right nor wrong, only the joy of the chase and glory of the kill. They do not make moral judgements about their quarry, though they are more likely to set themselves on the trail of the foolish, irreverent, and wicked. They resist control fiercely, and anyone who would command the Wild Hunt must take utmost care lest they become the hunted.

Name: Edric
Name Meaning: "Rich ruler"; named after a leader of the Wild Hunt in one Anglo-Saxon variant of the tale, Wild Edric.
Spirit: The Wild Hunt

Physical Description:

Skin Tone: Caucasian, but darker brown and actually lightly smudged naturally, evoking dirt-smeared skin; Edric's skin LOOKS dirty even when it's actually clean (which is rarely).

Eye Color: Very vivid green.

Hair Color: Dark red (natural red, not anime-hair red) with streaks of dark brown.

Hair Style: Shoulder-length (lol mullet) but messy - tangles of braids and even matted hair. While he does like it when his hair streams in the wind, this is NOT tangle-free bishounen hair. It's naturally wavy, and naturally one hell of a mess.

Unusual Features: Edric has antlers on his head (a reference to the horned leaders of the Hunt in various legends - Cernunnos and Herne the Hunter); these antlers start small and eventually grow to a great size, sharply pointed. As soon as the antlers are large enough to branch, Edric will begin hanging things off of them with twine - bits of twig, bark, bone, feathers, leaves and so on.

Edric's teeth are also ever so slightly pointed... not anywhere near like what a vampire's would be, but just enough to make his smiles disconcertingly predatory.

Lastly, Edric's ears are also ever so slightly pointed - not elf take-your-eye-out style, but they give him a vaguely wolfish look.

Distinguishing Marks: Dirt. Okay, so most of it washes off, but Edric is particularly fond of smearing mud across his cheekbones. He does this so constantly that they might as well be natural markings.

Attire: Mess, mess, mess. While in his natural state Edric would prefer wearing a mixture of tarnished armor and animal hide, maybe a few leaves... Kanariel insists on more normal clothes. Still, Edric manages to be rumpled and messy, with mud and twigs everywhere and the knees torn out of his pants in short order. Edric is a young boy, after all, and since he prefers to run around outside... natural results follow. His chosen colors are green and brown earth-tones, with black and gray.

Accessories: When antlers grow, he'll hang leaves, twigs, bark, bones and feathers off of them with twine. Later on in his life, he may gain (dear lord) a weapon or two, and probably a hunting horn.

Personality: Edric is one hell of a handful. He's bright, brash, prideful, willful, practical, very blunt and extremely intense. He's almost dangerously cheerful, the kind of cheerful that smiles with a bit too many teeth and makes you nervous - the term 'predatory glee' suits Edric quite well.

Edric is deeply stubborn, and also rebellious - he highly dislikes being told what to do, and if people attempt to place restrictions on his movement or behavior without earning his respect first, he'll react badly. If he wants something, he'll go after it with a single-mindedness that's almost frightening. He's very blunt, saying what he feels openly and with little tact, or lashing out with biting sarcasm. Still, his overall attitude is friendly and happy with a bite - his happy face has a predatory gleam in the eyes, his play is on the edge of being too rough, and his intensity is barely contained. He is definitely a wild child.

Naturally, Edric is a brilliant hunter and tracker. He loves being outdoors, and as such tends to get dirty easily. He doesn't mind it at all, and enjoys a good long romp through the woods. Physical activity and prowess is a high point for Edric, and he takes pride in his stamina and agility. He's no massive muscleman, but posesses a wiry and desperate strength. He also has a strong tendency towards eating meats and simple foods like potatoes, carrots, and brown bread.

Likes: Hunting, tracking, freedom, the woods, being outside, horses, dogs, play battles, real battles, physical activity, storms, PE class, meat and simple foods.

Dislikes: Enclosed spaces, other people's rules, having to follow other people's rules, overly cute things, 'wussy' things, cotton candy, lace, impractical things, reading (usually), math, the movie Bambi.

Strengths:
Extreme stubbornness and tenacity; when Edric wants something, he'll go after it until forcibly stopped.
Physical ability; Edric is physically fit and quite agile.
Sharpened senses; his sensory abilities are enhanced, more like those of an animal than a human.
Stamina; Edric is extremely difficult to tire out, physically and mentally, especially in terms of the chase.

Flaws:
Extreme stubbornness and tenacity; Edric will fixate on what he wants to an extent some would consider dangerously obsessive, and getting him to stop can take very extreme measures - including physically knocking him unconcious.
Claustrophobia; Edric reacts extremely badly when placed in confined places or situations and can work himself up into an unreasonable panic because he just can't stand it.
Dislike of rules; Edric does NOT like being ordered around or indeed given any boundaries whatsoever on his movements or his behavior. Depending on the person making the rule, and Edric's amount of respect for them, he may disregard rules entirely or only obey them partway. Why is this a flaw? Well, if the rule is "Do Not Enter - High Voltage"...

Special Abilities:
Like Minds - Edric attracts the curiosity of predator animals; they will come near him, but not attack him. He can't speak with them or anything, but they all treat him with a wary respect. This ability is innate and always active.

You Are Prey - Likewise, Edric is naturally intimidating/frightening to prey animals - his mere presence can cause unease, and if he TRIES to scare, say, a herd of cows... he can incite a stampede of terror. The unease facet is an innate ability, and always active.

Hunt You Down - Naturally, Edric has a preternatural skill in tracking and making kills, being able to hunt down nearly anything across any sort of terrain or distance.

His level of power will improve over time as he learns new skills and techniques. This particular power allows him to learn those hunting skills at a higher level and faster speed than normal humans... though actually implementing those ablities will require some assistance. It does you no good to know that your target is across the mountains if you can't get there yourself, after all...

Compulsion - The Words of Command: The Wild Hunt can be bound, but with only with difficulty... and only through the secret and taboo Words of Command. There are several different Words, ranging from Lesser to Greater to Forbidden, each granting the user different levels of control over the Wild Hunt. If a Word is learned, it can be used on Edric to try and compel his actions, with varying degrees of success depending on the user's willpower and the power inherent in the Word itself. For example, Edric's caretaker Kanariel knows a Lesser Word (see the next post for information).

The highest level Word, the Forbidden Word, will set the Wild Hunt on any soul, living or dead, guilty or innocent... but it has been lost for centuries and is currently assumed to be unknown by any who now live.

Name: Kanariel of the Deepdark
Age: 116 years (equivalent to about 40 in human terms)
Profession: Dragonslayer
Species: Dwarf

Appearance: Kanariel is a dwarf, and as such rather short - only about three and a half feet tall. Her hair, which she wears braided and coiled on the side of her head, is frizzy and gray; her eyes are deep brown. Freckles color her cheeks.

Kanariel's build is short but powerful, like most dwarves - honed to physical strength through honest toil in the rock, and additionally through her profession as a slayer of dragons to protect her people. She wears typical leather armor, and with her helmet on is indistinguishable from a male dwarf (the difference, physically, is slight anyway - only the usual plumbing and lack of facial hair really mark the genders).

Personality: Kanariel is honest, frank, straightforward and wholly free of guile. She is set in her ways, very protective of her people, and a bit of a loner... while she enjoys the company of other dwarves, she's not exactly at home above ground with 'the big folk', and even in the caverns she tends to be alone frequently with the nature of her profession. Kanariel is cleverer than she seems, however, with her canny understanding often avoiding all but the most skilled manipulations.

She also smokes like a chimney, but hey.

About the Dwarven Realms Below: Dwarves have lived below the surface of Gaia since their arrival many, many years ago - though unless you live near an entrance area to their vast underground labyrinth, you might never know they existed. Tunnels span the known realms of Gaia, where the dwarves live and mine, pulling much of the raw materials they need for life from the rock itself. Vast fields underground are lit by skylights and massive mirrors to sweep the light across; underground rivers flow and bring the purest water. Cave creatures and monsters make good eating, and there is always trade with the surface world to obtain anything else they may desire. The dwarves are a prosperous people, rich in trade of raw ores and jewels as well as their finely handcrafted metalwork, machinery, and weaponry.

About the Dragonslayers: Dwarves and dragons are natural enemies, and have been from the start - both of them love the treasures of the earth, and live in caves. Oftentimes dragons will move into dwarf caverns and raid their homes, eating those dwarves they come across and stealing their treasures for themselves.

It is because of this that the dwarf profession of 'dragonslayer' was born. Dragonslayers are trained in the arts of combat, though in a stealthy fashion... obviously a single dwarf could do nothing against a dragon in honest one-to-one combat, but within the tunnels there is often not room for more than one dwarf to manuver safely in battle. Thus, the dragonslayers are taught the art of poisoning their blades with dragonsbane, and how to sneak with utter silence to strike dragons when they are not looking, from behind and beneath.

It is still a difficult job, but over her thirty years in the job Kanariel has slain 29 dragons. When a Dragonslayer has been accorded 50 dragon kills, they are given a special title... the Dragon's Lord... and permitted to retire in weath and comfort for the services they have rendered to dwarfkind. Kanariel desperately wants this title and the honor and weath that comes with it.

Abilities: Kanariel posesses no special magical powers. However, she is shrewd and quite good with her blade (a small dagger) and with the mace.

Word of Command: So that Edric wouldn't be completely uncontrollable, upon the child's arrival the spirits whispered a Lesser Word of Command to his caretaker. Kanariel can use this word to force Edric's attention to her and compel his obedience, though the compulsion can be ignored - it's just very difficult. Ignoring the Word of Command causes intense feelings of guilt and discomfort in Edric, so Kanariel doesn't like actually using the Word unless Edric forces her to do so.

Edric at... some older stage, teen probably, by me. My art skillz are not leet enough to properly show his smudgy skin or the entirety of his fabulous mullet, so you can just pretend it's there.

Edric and Kanariel belong to me, Sosiqui. Plz not to take.

IotS, obviously, belongs to Incantation Esprit.

Inspiration to quest again by freakin' Cere, damn her. :V

My interpretation of the numerous Wild Hunt folktales and legends is most closely influenced by the retellings of Peter S. Beagle in his novel Tamsin, and Guy Gavriel Kay in the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy.

Banners by me.

Feel free to post constructive criticism and critique. <3

It's about like that, yeah... I mean, I don't have a super-clear requirement for the skin color, just that it's kind of dirty-like. ^.^
