Nickname: Kai
Gender: Male
Race: Kaha'iko
Speech Colour:
Light Sea Green (#3EA99F)
Personality:

Worrier - Kai tends to worry about a lot of things. The dropping river levels, the drought the alarming amount of predators in the rivers. How could he not worry? (This trait was a learned habit from observing his father. )

Serious - with all these things to threaten their way of life he doesn't have time to play games, although he has a soft spot for his two younger siblings and has a very hard time saying no to them. (this trait will become more apparent by the next stage).

Over protective - watching his mother and father's heartbreak and then joy of his most recent siblings birth he feels that he should protect his siblings from the outside world. They are precious and he won't let anything happen to them.

Indulgent - this only applies to his siblings, he can't help it and even when they press their luck he finds himself swayed by them.

Retreating Waters

Kai was holding his fathers hand as they swam down the ever shrinking waters of the river near their village of Pu’honu. The sun baked shallows were cracked from the years of exposure and looked similar to bleached bones. As they reached a familiar spot, one they they routinely came back to every few passing days, his father pulled them ashore quickly before releasing his hand and walking a few steps forward to scrutinize the waters edge.

There were reasons to get out quickly and to not linger. The shallows could prove a dangerous place where predators would lay in weight for unsuspecting victims. Best to get out quickly and quietly before they were noticed.

Kai held back, slightly hesitant to follow as he glanced behind him and to the edge of the river. Once the river had been two or three times larger than it was currently and one could see the baked clay banks now exposed to the worst of the weather. Even as young as he was Kai could remember the waters edge being higher than it was currently. Chewing on thumb as he glanced around watching his fathers every move, gesture and concerned expression.

With the retreat of the water some plants and small trees had attempted to grow but seemed to be trying to play catch up as most of them needed extra water consumption to grow in a healthy manner. So many of the plants had grown..only to dry out and die or the lingered in the process of a slow agonizing death. Kai had been looking at one in particular that strangely was thriving in the dry conditions when he jumped upon hearing his name called out.

"Malrokai, don't linger at the edge come stand here.." Spoke his father who's tone revealed that he was unhappy with the results of his investigation. Kai moved slowly over to where his father indicated with a gesture of his hand. Grumbling mostly to himself as he went to measure with his foot steps back towards the waters edge.

This had become a daily routine, while his mother was at home tending the eggs of what would one day become his little brothers or sisters, his father would take him out for foraging and to measure the retreating waters edge of the river.

"Daddy..." Kai squished his toes in the mud, it was warm and unpleasant but it was at least moisture. He wanted to go into the waters but he knew his father wouldn't let him just yet. "Is..it worse today?" He inquired instead rocking back and forth allowing the mud to coat the bottom and sides of his feet.

His father didn't respond at first, walking back and then placing a hand on his head. "N..o Malrokai its the same as yesterday..." The hesitation in his voice though wasn't very convincing but Kai knew better than to push his luck. Glancing back at the water a longing in his gaze he heard his father sigh. "Its not safe, the creatures are concentrating in the diminishing waters Malrokai... Besides we need to bring something home for your mother to cook for us."

Frowning Kai had heard this reply from his father on more than one occasion. Always an excuse, having to hold his fathers hand and never being able to actually enjoy the waters around them. From what he recalled from bed time stories from his mother the rivers use to be full and brimming with life. The rivers use to be connected to the sea but now...they were cut off. The only places he was allowed to swim freely were in the confines of their home or the small netted area just outside their home.

"Okay.." Kai sulked, he knew he was only here to provide an extra set or arms to carry supplies back home.

I want to help!

The day had been long, weary and tiring. Kai drifted into the room where his mother was tending the new nest of eggs. They were pretty, delicate spheres a whole nestle of them and his mother was humming a tune as she tenderly picked up on and inspected it for signs of illness or plant life trying to take root. So gentle she was as she used her feet to create a small current to allow fresh oxygen to cycle through the room.

"Mama....can I help?" Kai inquired watching from the door way, he was excited to become an older brother and seeing the potential of so many siblings made it hard to stay away. His mother looked over to him and kindly smiled. One would sense she was tired, exhausted even, soon it would be the fathers turn to take over and watch the nest. The nest was a gathering of under water weeds, each strand carefully expected for snails or other creatures before being woven together. About a dozen eggs were lying in there and both parents had been carefully tending to them for several months now.

"I could use some help fanning the eggs, why don't you give it a try." She managed as she shifted her position to allow Kai to come to her side. "Not to fast or too hard, " She cautioned at her little boy swam up to peer more closely at the eggs. Kai swam closer watching as his mom gentle nestled the egg she was holding back in with the others. They were beautiful and amazing to behold.

"Mama there are so many...." Kai coo'd as he shifted his position and began to kick his feet up and down to provide some sort of water current. HIs mothers hand came out urgently although gentle as she slowed his legs momentum until he got use to it. It was hard work to move at such a pace.

"When will they hatch?" Came his next question, the idea of having so many siblings to play was making him excited and he was forced to slow his pace again. Using his arms to help him stay in place he was already beggining to tire.

"Oh ..not for many more months..." His mother replied as she went to look the over again, her motherly instinct to guard protect and nurture in full drive.

"Were there as many when I was an egg?" Kai inquired, knowing it was a bit of a touchy subject...out of the entire nest of eggs only he had survived to hatch and thrive. Apparently he had a sibling who had also managed to hatch, but was too weak to pull through. An entire nest..of hope...for the future and only Malrokai survived. They had celebrated his birth, but also mourned the deaths of the rest of his clutch mates.

"Yes Kai.....there were." She replied as she reached up to undo the tie in her hair, brushing the loose strands back and out of her face before retying it. Kai always got the distinct feeling that asking about his old potential siblings made his mother sad. He didn't know how hard they had worked to protect their first clutch, only to have so many fall to illness or fall prey to predators. But watching his mother with that look in her eyes only made him more determined to help keep this bath of eggs healthy.

He had always wanted to ask about his old clutch. What had happened to them, but he knew better and continued to fan the eggs silently instead.

"If we are lucky Kai you will have another sibling." Shaitau continued and her words puzzled him. Only one? But there were so many eggs, was the rate of survival that low? Kai went to chew on his thumb in worry, wondering now if he was doing a good enough job circulating the waters, he went to speed up again only to have his mother bring out a hand to still his legs.

"Thank you Kai, why don't you see what your father is up to?" His mother spoke kindly, although anyone could see that she just wanted to be alone with the eggs for the moment. Nodding his head he swam backwards a bit his eyes still focused on the eggs, they seemed too fragile to him now..

"Okay mama..." He murmured as he exited the room to search for his father. Turning so he could use his arms as well his legs he swam through the lower interior of their home. The sandy mud packed floor was often eroded away from currents and sometimes small creatures managed to find their way inside without anybody noticing. A small cluster of fish was gathered around a small rock Kai had brought back from his first surface experience. Seeing them caused the young boy to frown and swim towards their direction.

Nervous the fish moved out of his reach before he could even get close and were watching him as he tried to out maneuver their tactics.

"Shoooo.." Kai chastised the fish, they were perhaps as long as his pinky and just as thin. They wouldn't even make a good snack for the family and were just looking for shelter in the shrinking rivers. Chasing the fish around was a fruitless endeavor however as they were much more nimble and about to dart away from him quick easily. Getting frustrated and a bit desperate as a couple times they had darted in the direction his mother and the eggs were he finally grudgingly just..stood his ground blocking their path towards them.

"Kai?...What are you doing?" His fathers voice came from above him and giving a quick glance upwards he then pointed in the direction of the school of fish.

"I can't get them to leave!" Kai stated with a huff, "I don't want them in here daddy, what if they hurt the eggs?" he continued in his worried tone, going back to chew on his thumb as he glanced between his father and the fish. The fish only watched him with a blank expression, unresponsive to his distress.

The older male glanced between the fish and his only son, a small smile capturing his gruff face. "Oh? Well we can't have that happening." He responded as he glanced behind himself and then swam out of the room much to Kai's surprise. Tilting his head the young boy couldn't decide if he should follow his father or stay and make sure the fish didn't go anywhere near the eggs. It was a moment where he was torn but he was lucky that his father didn't take that long to return. In his hands was a small net, not normally used in fishing, but to keep bait fish in.

"Alright Kai, why don't you try and herd the fish into my direction."

There were instruction and Kai felt his chest puff up that his dad trusted him with such a taste. Though he had helped his father in the past he normally did minimal. Holding equipment, handing over bait and keeping a look out where his primary tasks. Being entrusted to help herd the fish made him feel proud.

Turning to face the small school he frowned as he tried to think of the best way to approach them. Swimming not directly at them he was perhaps heading just off to the side of them. The silver flash of scale indicated the fish were wary, they inched away the closer he got and when he struck out the ball broke into many little fish before they swam out of reach and forming the small ball again. Frowning he moved forward using his arms stretched out to try and keep them from splitting up. Luckily there weren't so many that his small arms were pointless. But by nature the fish felt safety in number and it was hard from them to split up while being surrounded.

Concentrating to his fullest extent Kai didn't even realize how close he was to his father, luckily neither did the fish. A swoosh and the net was around them. There really wasn't that many of them. They were small...and not that numerous. Kai clapped his hand together in triumph feeling pride at being able to help in such a manner. Looking up at his father he had to smiling so much that his father gave a bit of a laugh.

"Well looks like we can make a small meal with this Kai, congratulations on your first successful hunt." His father congratulated him and Kai was surprised they were actually going to eat the small school. They were much smaller than they normally would catch perhaps his dad was just humoring him. Still he felt proud of being able to protect the eggs from the small fish.

"What is going on out her? Sweety I thought you were coming to take over watching the eggs..." Came the voice of Kai's very tired mother. She was peeking out of the room obviously not wanting to stray to far from the clutch.

"Mommy! I caught some fish!!" Kai stated excitedly as he swam over to his mother, pointing at the small net that was being held by his dad.

Disastrous

How long had it been now? The eggs were growing by the day, some had unfortunately fallen ill to sickness though it was no ones fault Kai felt that it was making his parents depressed. The clutch was smaller by four eggs since the fish incident and Kai had taken it upon himself to make sure no fish got back inside the house. Although he was young, he would spend days scowering the home looking for holes that would allow fish and other creatures slip into the home.

Of course some of these holes were necessary to keep the water flow and prevent the water from becoming stagnant so with the help of his father they were able to come up with a netting system to cover these patches. It was a good collaborative effort and it put Kai's mind at ease, but today as he was trying to think of other things he could do to protect the eggs he was approached by his parents. They both were looking serious, but his mother in particular looked pale and weak.

"Malrokai...we have a very important task for you.." His father spoke and although drifting in the water his hands came up to support his mate who looked as if she may sink to the river's bottom at any moment. Seeing her condition caused the lad to straighten up, paying his father rapt attention.

"I am taking your mother to the healer, she is ill and unable to look after herself..so I need you to look after the home and the eggs. You remember what needs to be done?"

"I..am f..ine dear..its too much for.."

"Don't touch the eggs unless absolutely necessary, make sure to keep a steady flow of water to provide nutrients an oxygen. Not to strong..but not too weak. I've practiced with mommy lots!" Kai recited the rules he had been told many times. His father looked impressed whilst his mother looked unsure.

"Good..we shouldn't be long, your in charge while we are out." His father spoke as he guided his wife out of their home. Kai watched as his mother glanced behind her and to Kai...she looked like a ghost..but Kai was already turning away moving towards the nest of eggs as doubts were filtering through her mind. He would do a great job protecting the eggs! The best big brother ever!

The eggs had been moved from the room they were in, to a new locations after the lose of the four. Something about the area was proving unfavorable. So a new nest was built and this time was more exposed, perhaps his mother and father thought that they needed more current to pass over them. A small net was covering them like a balloon at the moment. Since they were left alone it was the safest way to make sure small predators didn't eat them. Moving over Kai felt his curiosity growing, no..he really should just leave them alone. But he was starting to feel like they were calling to him. Looking back to where his mother and father had left he returned his gaze to the net.

Just a little while. His small hands came up to carefully untie the net and lift if off. The eggs were beautiful, the tough outer casings were strong and vibrant in colour. He smiled leaning his elbows onto the nest,

"You...I bet your going to be a sister..." Kai spoke with a large smile, his finger then moved in the direction of another egg, "brother...brother...sister...brother.." Labeling the gender of each of the eggs until there were none left he gave a small yawn. " I will protect you all..soon I will have all of you as my siblings..." Kai managed through his yawn. How much time had passed? Really he hadn't been watching the eggs that long, so while the net was off he felt like he should fan the water over them. Taking up the position over the eggs he did as his mother had instructed him to do countless times.

"I wonder what mommy and daddy will call you all..." There were quite a few eggs left even if some hadn't made it. The idea of having to name them all seemed a bit daunting. Excited he didn't realize that he had kicked a rather strong blast of water in the direction of the eggs. Sending the few closest to the edges flying up and out of the nest. His eyes went huge as he saw this happen. Turning over in a somersault fashion he reached out trying to catch one of the closest but...it dropped past his finger tips and even with a kick o f his feet he couldn't stop it from gently landing on the silt below.

Panic, he was told to never touch the eggs unless absolutely necessary. He hesitated before finally reaching to grasp it. His hand shook as he lifted it from the river floor. He couldn't be slow, there were two? No! Three others that were now drifting away by the current along the river floor. Swimming past the nest he cradled the fist egg in his crutch of his arm, unaware the damage being done on its shell by simple the rubbing of his skin against it. He reached for the second runaway egg and snatched it up quickly, placing it beside the first. The third...where did it go??

Looking frantically around Kai spotted it much further away than he had anticipated. Glancing back at the nest he went and carefully placed the two eggs he had retrieved back into the nest before he rushed back in the direction of the third. Where...dang it where had it gone?? Pressing his body to the river floor he scanned under what things they had sitting around before finally catching sight of it slightly under a overhanging ledge. Relief and worry flooded over him. Swimming over as quickly as he could his fingers reached out to grasp the egg and he cradled it after a moment feeling so much relief to have found it. Swimming he returned to the nest and gently had it join its brothers and sisters.

Kai looked over them all one at a time, horrified to discover that..not one by two of the eggs the ones he had touched the longest looking a bit..frayed..losing their luster. Chewing on his thumb Kai panicked, what did he do?? Why? Looking at the eggs with a frustrated and torn look he went about attaching the net back over the eggs. He didn't know what to do at this point. In fact it was just better if he had left the net on them in the first place...why did he have to be so ..so..foolish? Mommy and Daddy were going to be so disappointed in him!

Curling away from the eggs he found himself glancing at the two that seemed the worse off his heart sinking into his stomach. He wasn't sure how much time had past, how long he was left to watch as the eggs paled...and soon eventually died. Though tears weren't something that could be seen underwater he knew he was producing them. Racking coughs from his sobs as he felt responsible for the deaths of not one but possibly three of his siblings.

When Kai heard the voices of his parents outside the house he swam towards them in a rush, a new flood of tears incomprehensible words as he apologized over and over again. There was some confusion, until his mother went over to the nest and removed the net. There was silence, Kai explained through tears and his face buried into his dads chest what had happened and it was only made worse when his mothers sobs reached his ears.

His father patted his head, stroking it as he swam away from the scene and outside of the home. Kai cried himself to sleep in his fathers arms, exhaustion over taking him. Kai would often wonder why his father never said anything to him during that time. He didn't get angry at him, scold him or even punish him for what he had done. Kai couldn't forgive himself but his father just listened to him cry, perhaps he understood that Kai already was punishing himself for the accident.

The next morning there were three less eggs in the nest, his mother never said anything to Kai about the matter. What tears she had cried were dry by the time Kai awoke the next day. Unsure on how to behave around his mother Kai avoided her and the nest all together trying to keep as much distance between them as possible. Jumping at the chance to look after house hold chores that required he be outside of the home anything to keep him away from the remainder of his unborn siblings.
