The summer months were always noticeably warm in Kahikina and the people of Pale’iko weren’t strangers to the changes summer brought. The heat dried up more of their already diminished rivers and anyone could see the drop from where they were near the surface. But this time, from beneath the Pale’iko river waters, something could be seen glinting on the banks above the water. It seemed like it was stuck in the mud, and the receding water had washed just enough of the bank away to uncover whatever was under there. What could it be? Was it treasure? Or was it someone’s trash? Status ✔ = Finished (736 words) Points: 5

Big Brother Time marched onward, as the seasons passed into summer the heat was not a welcomed change. Although at one time the warming waters were anticipated, the most recent years only proved to dry the already waning rivers. As his two siblings got older and his presence wasn't needed as constantly as it had been once he went with his father out to check the dropping water levels. Going into the shallows had always been dangerous, with predators that liked to hang out waiting for tastey morsels like himself to let his guard down. But while he was with his father he wasn't afraid. Or at least he liked to put on a brave front at least. True be told he was just as worried about his father about the dramatic fall in the water level. It was just starting to hit peak heat season and to have it dropped this low already...
Kai rose from the depths, his feet finding a solid ground as he moved forward until it reached the edge. The mud here was thick..sticky. Dying river plants dried out under the hot sun and even he felt his skin drying out too quickly. Licking his already parched lips he looked around. The bank...was expansive. Much more so than in years past. He heard his fathers heavy sigh as he went about inspecting..measuring the waters depth..the length from the waters edge to the normal river bank.
He helped his father best he could, but it was easier to do by ones self and thus he was left to explore the expanse of the bank by himself. Although warned about the hazards, Kai took the warning to heart as he moved along the drying mud bank. Here and there he spotted dried out bodies of fish that had got caught in the mud and dried out in a fairly grizzly death. He flinched looking at their vacant dead eyes and continued onward. The bank buzzed with death, black flies..and other numerous insects covered the rotting bodies of fish and any other sad wild life that was caught in the mud.
Kai was careful to make sure he didn't get stuck like the others, treading in the shallows rather than the suctioning mud. It didn't take him long however to find a reason to have to travel up the bank and risk getting stuck himself. There was something embedded in the mud it glinted through flecks of mud that covered it. It shone like the sun through the water, sparkly almost. What could it be? Normally such a thing wouldn't peek his interest, but he couldn't help but wonder what it was..and if his siblings Mhuana and Gaio would like it. If it would bring them joy..he would risk it.
Chewing his lips he trudged up towards it. The mud was thick and clung to his feet with suction. He struggled a bit but managed to get to the point where the object was mostly hidden in the mud. His fingers reached out feeling out the surface to see what exactly it was. It was..smooth in places and then had ridges. Frowning he tried to find the edge of it, his fingers roaming around the surface that was exposed to find some sort of a lip for him to pull on. It took some time, but eventually he managed it. Working his fingers underneath he discovered it wasn't very thick and felt rather fragile. With some delicate maneuvering he managed to pull it free, it was the largest snail shell he had ever seen. About the size of both his fists put together..or no wait..even bigger than that! It was a soft white (where it wasn't covered in mud) and has bright orange stripes crossing its surface.
Tilting his head he moved back towards the shallows and proceeded to wash it off. Trying to figure out what species it belonged to. No river snail grew this big. Nor did he recognize the shape. Still it was a marvel once it was all cleaned off. Perhaps he would give it to his mother, she would find some use for it even if decorative.
"Malrokai!"
Looking over he spotted his father waving at him, it was time to go. Raising the shell with both hands carefully he broke into a small grin.
"Look what I found papa!" He called before starting his way back to his fathers side.
