The Birth For the next little while even if the rest of the eggs seemed strong healthy and vibrant Kai wouldn't go near them. Convinced he would just hurt more if he was allowed near. Though neither of his parents talked about the indiccent it ate away at him. When was the last time he risked sneaking a look at them? He use to do it every chance he got, but now..he had no idea how many were left, when they would be hatching..or it any of them would be hatching. Although he hoped some would make it, he felt that it was best if he left his parents to do most of the care.
Sleeping he was woken up gently by his mother, she was shaking his shoulder and it caused him to groan as he rubbed an eye.
"Come..there is someone you need to meet.." She whispered to him quietly, Kai looked around unsure about what time it was, the light filtering through the waters felt weak was it nearly day? Swimming with his mother he found his father sitting near the nest nestling something in his arms. Excitement and then worry spread through him the eggs had hatched! Hanging back behind his mother he dared to peak only to discover not one..but two little bundles nestling against his fathers chest.
"Kai come meet your new little brother and sister..." HIs father encouraged with a nod of his head. Kai shook his head, although he was excited to meet his new siblings part of him still worried...what if he did something foolish again? Without his consent his mother pulled him out from behind her and pushed him in the direction of his siblings. They were so little...with the same silverish blue hair like himself, though their scales were a bit different in pattern than his own.
"Do you want to hold one?" His father inquired softly, both the babies were sleeping quite soundly, the hatching process must of taken quite a toll on them. Kai shook his head rather violently, he didn't want to risk dropping them. He did however creep closer to inspect them.
"What ...are their names?" He inquired with a tilt of his head trying to get a better feel of their squished up faces.
"We have named your brother Gaio, and your sister Mhuan." Came his mothers response. They were interesting names and Kai nodded his head thoughtfully. Even risking a small smile as he reached out to gently touch the head of Gaio, the soft hair was thin but certainly there. Pulling back only when the baby stirred at his contact. Kai looked back to the nest the shells were already removed and the nest was empty. Out of that entire clutch only two had survived. These two looked strong and healthy but it dawned on him that raising a family must be very difficult.
"You can go back to sleep Kai..its still very early in the morning and we will need you to be extra awake later to help with the babies." His mothers spoke as she went to retrieve the babies from his fathers arms. It looked like they themselves had been up almost the entire night watching over the hatching process.
Kai watched as the babies were passed over, the little girl Mhuana stirring an giving a little bit of a fuss at the transfer. Hearing her small voice won Kai's heart and he swam up to get a closer look at her. Leaning over to give his little sister a kiss on the head before moving to his brother and repeating the same action. Even if he had messed up before...he knew from this moment on wards he was going to make sure he was the best big brother ever. Status ✔ = Finished Word Count: 663 Points: 2

Big Brother Time passes, and Malrokai grew as did his two younger siblings which he came to adore and cherish. Kai tried to help with everything since they were born, although tentatively at first, he soon found that the hatchlings were not nearly as fragile as the eggs had been. Which was a huge relief for Kai,but with them being babies a new set of challenges were set up instead.
The first couple of weeks were a huge shift for Kai. The babies were, as his father put it, 'a force of nature' something you could not reason with and just had to accept and overcome with patience. At first Malrokai didn't know what his father meant by this...but it didn't take him long to quickly understand. They were very cute when they were smiling, gazing in wonder at the world around them or sleeping. But more often than not they cried. Cried for food, cried when they were tired, cried if they were lonely or bored. The crying..was the hardest part to adjust to. Crying would turn into wailing, full out screaming if their needs were not met in time, it often felt like some sort of timed event where you only had a small window to prevent the screams.
Kai would often ask his mother why they cried so much. His mother would just simply give a weary shrug of her shoulders as she tried to comfort one if not both of the babies. She explained that it could be various reasons, being hungry...the primary one or wanting comfort, and it seemed that when one started soon the second would join in. Like a horrid chorus of squalling shore birds. Ones that couldn't sing a nice note if they tried. It left the entire family exhausted and sometimes Kai felt rather left out when his parents had to focus their entire attention on the babies instead of him.
Malrokai didn't resent his siblings, although he felt sad at times he knew that they needed his parents attention more than he did. he was after all a 'big boy' now and was given more responsibilities as the 'big brother'. Small tasks like keeping track of toys, helping with clothing and keeping pests like small fish out of the nursery who seemed to like nibbling on the babies toes.
Time passed and although it wasn't a quick change, eventually they fell into a routine. When they slept, ate..cried became like clockwork. This allowed the parents and Kai some much needed peace and rest. His dad took him out more often to help gather fish, his mother allowed him to be more hands on with the babes, a task he originally shied away from as it felt like every time he tried to help it would end up with one or both screaming at the top of their lungs.
Eventually he figured out the tricks, a quick bounce or rocking back and forth..swaying in the water. Making interesting sounds to distract them if they were crying. With each encounter he grew more attached to them, recalling their first smiles, giggling laughter, their first words (mama being the first quickly followed by dada). Kai recalled how his siblings had such a terrible time trying to say his name as Malrokai was quite a mouthful it was shortened to Mal at first...but sounded too similar to Mama so it quickly was changed to Kai, which they still had trouble saying but it was better than getting the names confused.
They grew quickly, with food that his dad provided and under the care of their mother learned how to talk and play. The growing of teeth was another growing pain, but with each mile stone Kai fell more in love with his siblings. Learning to swim...was interesting as trying to stop them from crashing into the walls or just wandering off was a new challenge. A net was created to cover the windows and doors to stop the toddlers from escaping the home. And as they grew they won the hearts of the entirely family.
They also quickly learned that they could manipulate their brother quite easily, picking up on the fact that their big brother would do nearly anything for them. To say they were spoiled was perhaps an understatement, for both siblings knew better than to try and cohere their parents into doing what they wanted..but their brother...was wrapped around their stubby little fingers.
"K..aiii kaai!" Came the small high pitched voice that belonged to his sister Mhuana who was tugging on the sash tied around his waist. Kai had been tending to his brother, getting him dressed and trying to prepare him for the day as his father was out and his mother busy trying to prepare the morning meal. Turning he looked down to see the grey-blue eyes upturned in his direction a firm pout embedded on her lips. First he noted that her hair was messy, hadn't he just finished getting her ready? Where did her hair tie go?
"What is it Mhuana?" Kai inquired his eyes darting around the room trying to find the missing hair tie, though by turning his attention away from his brother Gaio was now pulling on his hair. Quite hard. And laughing to boot.
"Ou..ch..Gaio stop ..please? Your..si..ow.." Kai put on a brave face as his hair was still being yanked. His hand coming up to gently but firmly grab hold of his brothers small hand to stop it from pulling on his hair again. Normally one would get angry by this point wouldn't they? But Kai seemed to infinite patience when it came to his siblings. He had to find that hair tie though, else the current would carry it away to goodness knows where in the house...if not out of the house entirely (as it was small enough to slip through the holes in the nets) Then he was fairly certain Mhauna would be upset for losing the tie claiming it to be her favorite even though he knew it was the one with the little snail shell attached to it.
Maybe he could distract her from the fact it was missing in the first place. Better yet not draw attention to it disappearance.
"Can't we go out to play?" Mhauna whined as she tugged on her brothers clothing. Kai gave a sigh as this had been a constant question for the last couple of days. The water levels were still low and it was dangerous to really go out and explore the muddy shores without risk of being stranded in the mire of a shore line. They could always play just outside of their home, but at the moment it was just him watching his siblings. Mother and father said that they would be back quickly and he wasn't confident in his ability to keep an eye on the both of them.
"YEAH! OUTSIDE!" Gaio shrieked unfortunately into Kai's ear causing it to ring. Wincing he lowered his brother so that he could join his sister in clinging to his clothing.
"Outside outside outside!" The pair began to chant in some sort of unison. Chewing on his lower lip he looked down at them noting that they were stretching his shirt out by yanking on it. Trying to pry his siblings fingers off his clothing he tried to find a good excuse to to stay inside. A game. They needed a game to keep them occupied until mom and dad came back.
"Ah...I dunno...if we go outside the sneakies may get in..." Kai started the elaborate lie. It was to be a game, Sneakies was a game his mother had come up when he was little. He remembered it fondly. You basically had to look around the house for any stray minnows that may of gotten in. These 'sneakies' had to be caught and released outside or they may invite their much larger cousins the 'biggies' and those would want to nibble on your fingers and your toes. Really it was just an every day chore. They had to do this regardless but making it sound like a game at least made it more tolerable.
Looking down Kai noticed that after his explanation of the task his sister was giving him a sour look. Did...she know that this was actually a chore? Kai nearly faltered until she looked away and darted towards a bucket pulling it up and away from the sandy floor dramatically.
"nope...no sneakies here!" She stated as she dropped the bucket and then went to the next obvious place little fish may be hiding.
"NO FAIR!" Gaio shouted, " you got a head start!" his younger brother yelled as he then dashed to his sisters side. Kai now had a new chore...cleaning up after his siblings in this game. At least it was keeping them occupied. Swimming over to the bucket he grab it and then set it back on the ground and placed a rock in the bottom to keep it there. Else the current would just...carry away and then they would have a new game.

 The prettiest of Shells
Bringing home the shell he had found the young man hugged it close to his chest. He wanted his mother to have it, sure it needed a bit of cleaning but it would be worth seeing his mothers expression when he gave it to her. Of course...that meant he would have to hide it from his siblings. Kai wasn't worried about them breaking it, more..that they would want it for themselves. And being that there was two of them...he was fairly certain they would fight over it, and Kai wanted to give it to their mother...not them.
Feeling guilty now thinking about how disappointed they would be when his younger brother and sister realized the shell was not for them...he paused drifting in the water as he thought long and hard about how to approach the situation. He could...find some other shells to give them. But he hadn't seen anything nearly as fancy as the one clutched in his arms.
"Dad..." Kai called out at his fathers form that was slowly making its way back home. The young man swim quickly to his fathers side when he has slowed down even further to allow him to catch up.
"What is is Malrokai?" He inquired looking down at him, the worried creases in his face still permanently etched into his forehead from years of worry.
"I....." He held up the shell for his father to look at again, "I want to give this to mother...but...I am afraid the twins will.."
"Be jealous?" His father finished off his sentence, to which Kai just simply nodded his head solemnly. Stopping, although still drifting in the current of the stream both father and son looked at the shell a moment.
"You know Gaio and Mhuana will have to learn that they can't have everything. Its not good to spoil them like you do. "
Kai looked up abruptly, his face turning a shade of purple from embarrassment. "I don't spoil them..." He muttered, although not sounding very convinced about his own claim.
His dad gave him a raised eyebrow and a slightly crooked smile. "Right...you'd give them the clothes on your back if they asked you for it." He chuckled. "Now Kai I know you love your brother and sister, but they need to learn boundaries. If you want to give this shell to your mother than you have to be firm about it."
"I know..but...I just don't want them to be sad.." Kai muttered again drifting along with his father.
"They may be sad at first...but it won't be forever." His father continued with a smile, his hand coming to his son's shoulder and giving it a firm squeeze. "Remember you are the older brother. You know what they need and don't need. What would they do with that shell? Hmm?"
"Probably...break it.." Kai stated as he looked over the precious item in his hands. Turning it carefully to look over the dazzling design, yes he knew that Mhuana and Gaio would likely fight over it and ultimately it would be smashed, leading to tears and probably a tantrum. But he dreaded the swim home all the same. Trying to think of a nice way of telling the twins no and to be firm about it at the same time.
Kai knew that he was a sucker for his siblings demands. Always giving in (unless it proved dangerous) and buckling under their cute faces. As home neared though he was starting to feel his resolve wavering. The joy on their faces...the fact that it wasn't meant for them...the pouts and then the tears. Wouldn't it be simpler to just hide it? That was an idea that hadn't occurred to him. If he could sneak it into the house without them noticing, then there wouldn't be anything for them to fight or get upset over. It was perhaps the cowards way, but being that he was still fairly young trying to be brave seemed too much trouble when it came to his siblings.
Tucking the shell behind his back so that Mhauna and Gaio wouldn't see it as they neared their aquatic home, he did find it a bit awkward. The shell was larger than he realized, if he had been an adult it wouldn't of been easier but his smaller stature meant he had to pay extra close attention to the position of it behind his back. His father eye'd him, noting what he was trying to do.
"Are you trying to slip it into the house?" He inquired causing Kai to jerked his head up to look at his dad.
"Y..eah.." He felt a bit ashamed his face colouring in embarrassment. Status ✔ = WIP Word Count: 783 Points:2
