Ruihi was excited, that's the only word she could use to describe her reaction to the most current news. For years, she dedicated her time and energy to be a messenger and as a result was one of the few Menehune to interact with the Kaha'iko across the canal. It had left her as an outcast, someone who was surrounded by rumors of abandoning their ways to live the lavish life of the wayward Kaha'iko. Even without constant interaction between the two races, each one had their perceptions thanks to rumors that spread from the bordering settlements.

Pausing a moment within the waters at that thought, Ruihi let out a bark of a laugh. Most may not know the truth about the others, but they would soon enough. The most current news would be sure to raise interest, fears, and general excitement among everyone in Kahikina. Ruihi would be her next tattoo design on that.

As she felt the transition to the thicker waters of Elehun, Ruihi could already feel the buzz of the community. The leaders knew she was called on an important mission, and that she would bring back some news to share. As she made her way to the bordering settlement of Naele, one of the few places where she was welcomed still for her interactions with the Kaha'iko, Ruihi ran the announcement back through her mind. They would want her report immediately, so she needed to make sure she was clear.

It took only a moment for her to be swept into the home of the leader, and she relaxed enough to take a deep breath.

"I come with great news from the Kaha'iko. They request the presence of the great leaders of the Menehune, in half a year's time, to discuss the growing concerns over the shrinking waters." Ruihi spoke quickly, eyes wide as she looked across at the growing number of elders. All of the elders were seated around her, including the ever reclusive Kapa'a, who was silent. Everyone waited for his response; he was one of the most devout of Menehune and if he was uncomfortable with the arrangement the others would refuse as well.

Ruihi just sat in silence and anticipation, eager to be part of such a momentous event.

"It appears that we have no choice," Kapa'a spoke after another long moment, his words slow and drawn, "Our waters too have receded, and that is a clear threat to our life. If the Kaha'iko too see such trends, we can only assume that this is much more dangerous than expected. We must work together to find a solution to this problem, so we can protect our homes and our ways."

It wasn't a surprise, after all, as the Menehune were willing to work toward a common goal if it meant safety, security, and solving a problem. In no time at all, the elders parted to head to their own settlements, to spread the news to their people. Ruihi left immediately to head back to Pale'iko to let them know of the response. Undoubtedly, the Kaha'iko would spread word as well during their trip to Noelani.

As Kapa'a watched his allies and comrades leave, he was silent. This was something deep to consider. News would travel that the world was now open, that people were encouraged to begin their trip to Noelani, a place normally seen as an end-of-life journey once a Menehune passed on. To open up the borders would mean opening up the Menehune to the Kaha'iko ways.

It was a risk, but he saw the water turning to mud, and the mud turning to sand. Their world was shrinking, and protecting his family was more important than keeping his pride.

"Its about time they called the people together," Jherai, Malrokai's father spoke in a irritated and upset tone, his mother giving him a withering look as she carefully gathered the eggs up in a small seaweed basket. Kai's swam not too far off, trying to be out of the way but still close enough to eavesdrop on his parents conversation.

"Seriously Jherai you worry too much, you should be focusing on your family and our new batch of eggs." Shaitau responded as she then handed the full basket to her partner. A part of the room had broken and it was unsafe for the eggs to remain there as fish were now able to slip inside the room. Already one egg had fallen prey to them and now instead of twelve potential siblings they were down to eleven.

Kai had been very upset to discover this, though his mother had quieted his cries and explained to him that it was unfortunate but the way nature worked. Although it still was upsetting his crying had turn to sobs and soon his sobs ceased. Now he was quietly observing his parents, as they went about fixing the room.

"But I am worrying about our family, the waters recede every year, soon there will be more land than river for us to live in. What will we do then?" Jherai growled as he carefully positioned the basket into his arms, cradling the brood, whilst his mate went about the delicate watch of patching the hole with woven cord.

Kai couldn't help but feel his own fears increase listening to the anger in his fathers tone. Nervously he fidgeted with the toy in his arms and looking down at the strange doll carefully placed it on the muddy bottom before swimming over.

"Daddy...are we going to have to move?" He inquired quietly, tugging on his dads arm causing the older man to glare at him in surprise. The eggs were still safe in his arms but the tugging had startled him. Kai dropped his hand quickly and swam a few feet away from him. Perhaps he should of left his worries for himself to dwell on. He liked his house though, and he didn't want to move.

"Ah...no Kai...not for a long time.." His father responded his tone softening, as he looked down at the eggs in his possession. "We are just meeting with the people of the marshlands..." He continued changing the subject as if to ease his sons fears.

Blinking Kai nodded his head, he knew of them..had seen them on occasion but never much beyond a look or stare. He knew little of their ways or customs..what their homes were like. Kai did remember thinking that...they were similar to the color of mud. But dared never voice that thought aloud in front of them.

"Can I go with you?" Kai inquired curious about knowing more about these people, as well wanting to know more about what lay ahead of them. If the rivers were drying up...he wanted to be prepared for it. Wanted to help his mom, dad and potential siblings. His parents passed looks at each other, such looks that said unspoken words. "Please daddy? I want to help. I want to ...go with you." Kai swam up to his father, who was in the process of returning the eggs to his mothers arms.

"Kai...you really shoul.."

"I won't be a bother! Please!" Kai begged, grabbing his dads arm once freed of their burden. Sighing both parents knew Kai will enough that once an idea was in his head it was stuck there.

"Alright...but you have to listen to my every word."
