You can feel it the moment you wake up. There is always the lingering disappointment that you will never feel the comfort and security of what had been your home, there is always the yearning for the simple things you had taken for granted before day zero, but today there is also something else. A little more hope perhaps. Anticipation. Maybe something will finally change today.
You will finally change today.
It is no secret that post day zero, all survivors eventually banded into four main factions. They distanced themselves from each other, disagreeing entirely with each others' ethics and methods. You are in your faction by a sliver of choice. Convenience maybe, or maybe someone else you knew decided to stay. For now, this faction is yours.
It has been grey since the first day started, when the skies began to burn, and it has been grey since. The collapse of technology, the need to scavenge and forage. The strange, rampant growth of the thorns, a wall of unforgiving foliage that covered most of the city. The consistent reminder that you were never alone, plagued by the living and the dead.
Today is going to be different.
It is the same lie you continue to tell to yourself to simply live.

WELCOME TO DAY ZERO:
Welcome to the official start of the event! A few things to mention before we get started! First of all, make sure that you always disable your sig when posting. Follow the steps below:
[ STEP 1: ] All players should write a QUICK response to this prompt with their character in this thread!
[ STEP 2: ] Read the EVENT INFORMATION THREAD. This explains everything happening in the event. It is a lot to read, so feel free to read it over a few times just to make sure you're not missing anything, as well as ask around for help (on AIM)! Follow the steps in the information thread, including checking your minis account, as well as making sure you have a journal for your character.
[ STEP 3: ] Step in to RP in your factions! The "next" RP step would be to rp with your faction in your faction's MAIN ORP. Make a post and plunge your character in! Make sure you read the all your information + faction information first before posting in the ORPS. Have fun and good luck!
You wake up and are just as tired as the day before, as the day before, as the day before. To the day, it's been a month since your sister died before your eyes. To the day, it's been a month since fire and blood and gore and chaos wreaked havoc over your hometown.
And to the day, it's been a month since you've joined The Crooks.
You're tired. You're hungry. You're cold. You don't really want to get a move on with your day, but there's not much of a choice. It's do or die, out here, and for all your misery?
One month. It's been one month. It was hard to believe. Kind of surreal to think about it really. Michael had to wonder how long this will last. He hoped it wouldn't be for much longer.

[Prison] - Rufus Moran
When Rufus awoke that morning, just before opening his eyes, he thought to himself; this was going to be a great day.
Then he opened them, and realized he lived in a prison. Probably for good.
Nothing about the grey walls and solid bars convinced him that his initial train of thought was right. But past them, maybe.. maybe there was something new waiting.
(But, equally likely, not.)

Still here. Was Bing's first coherent thought upon waking in his cell. Rubbing the crusty bits from his eyes, he peered blearily out at the sky through his tiny slit of a window. Still here and things're still grey, he noted. He rolled off the bunk with a grunt, and thought about the situation while he took his morning leak.
One month. One goddamn month of bottled water, gruel, and uncomfortable, if clean, bunks. Of course the world would go to s**t the night he was gonna get out of jail. Bing missed cigars. He missed Beer. He freaking missed being able to take a piss without putting on a show for the schmucks in the cell opposite. He had no idea if the mob was still operating. Hopefully, the boss and the others had been able to get out of the city. No one had showed at the prison, and if someone had wound up in one of the other gangs, he hadn't heard from them.
Still. He was alive. Which meant when things changed, he'd be able to do something about the situation. Until he got some information otherwise, he was going to stick to the mission, well, at least the part about keeping Benjamin alive. Zipping up his pants, Bing glanced over to see that Benji's bunk was empty. Just where had the prodigal son of a b***h gone to now?
Bing headed to the Yard to start his search.

Noah couldn't believe a whole month had passed since everything fell apart. If she hadn't gone to that job site, would she still even be here? It was what caused her to book it and seek out a refuge for what was happening in the world. Only now, what was she going to do?
A prison.
Her home away from home, maybe.

A month was, in the grand scheme of things, not a particularly long time - and in Raffin's case, he found it went by both very fast and very slow all at once. There were times when he'd believed that three days had passed, when in reality it had only been one, or possibly a few hours. And sometimes, when he'd thought that only a few hours had passed, several days had instead.
He supposed this was both a good thing and a bad thing, though really, all that mattered was that he was still here in the long run. Sometimes he believed that he would be one of the first to die - but, well, he'd managed to get himself here, at the very least, and he was still breathing, last he checked. All of his limbs were (mostly) intact, and he could see and hear. Life was good.
Diana was getting fidgety. She'd been there for a month, stuck with all the other prisoners that had survived day zero. She had been thrown into the prison for a minor theft, and now she was stuck there with no way out really. The virus was still spreading and they were not doing well on water. It was miserable, but she couldn't complain. At least they were all relatively safe in the confined walls of the prison. For now nothing could get in or out and they were alive. Plenty of lives had been lost already to this virus, and she refused to be next on the list. She wasn't going out without a fight. Though with supplies dwindling...she hoped they found a way to stop the virus soon.

[Mall] - Calab
Calab had gotten use to sleeping in the hammock he'd strung up from one of the sporting good stores, he really couldn't be bothered to remember where anymore. He originally had bunked in the bedding part of some store, but then it'd sort of been taken over as a place for girls. Whatever, let the people who took over keep the display beds for themselves or fight with others. These thoughts ran through his head even now, days where it was the only way to keep from thinking about when he's been home.. when he'd had a home.
Enough outside light had filtered in to wake him apparently, at the moment either the lights were off or out in this store. He rolled out of the hammock landing in the dim light. It was quiet, oddly something that was more worrying than sound to him anymore. "The others are probably buzzing about already." He mumbled to himself.

The day was no different than any other as Cecil woke in a haze from minimal sleep. Nothing had changed in regards to his situation nor the looming danger beyond the university walls but somehow it just felt...odd. Maybe different was the better word. He couldn't say whether anything would change for the better today but he wanted to believe that it would.
He realized, shortly after rising, a month had passed already and yet it felt like it had been years. There was still worry for those that could potentially be outside but the hope of seeing family or loved ones again was waning day by day. He did his best not to let it get him down, especially since there were those here that he felt he needed to look after. At least with everything going on it was more than enough to keep his mind occupied.
Getting dressed and ready to face this day Cecil couldn't help but check his pockets for the cell phone he had lost a month ago. There was a small hope it would suddenly be there even though he knew it would be pointless to have. All services and connection to the outside world had gone dark meaning there would be no texts or calls from those he was worried about. It would have been nothing more than a trinket to taunt him and yet he earned for it still.

[ Prison ]
Monica couldn't say she'd been keeping track of the days since this had all started, but...
Okay, yeah, sure, fine. She knew it'd been a while. She glanced over the fellow inhabitants of her cell, and mumbled, carefully, "Going for a walk." Or, you know, to see what'd changed.
Not that there was any real expectation of change, for her. Monica just liked to keep her options open. But this place was secure, and Corgi was within its walls with her: that was what mattered most. But at the same time, she didn't want to become complacent. This couldn't be how she was spending the rest of her life. Or how Cory was spending his. They had to find a way out of the city; find a cure to the outbreak...something. And they'd start doing it today.

Ingrid's alarm clock didn't go off. It hadn't gone off in a while, really.
She was thirsty. Groaning, she rolled out of bed and stretched, licking her lips. She went to check the locks on her door (first things first), allowed herself a sip of water, and sat down on the floor to do her usual workout routine in silence. It just wasn't the same without music, but she had to conserve battery life for the truly bad days. This wasn't one of them. Actually... she had a feeling that maybe it'd be a good day, after all.

[ University ]
He laid in wait the entire night in the pitch-black power room for day zero to arrive. Morning announced itself with the light coming through the door crack, and Peter staggered to his feet, laying his hand on the doorknob. Hesitation, then a click!.
The man peered through the small gap through the door to see that the coast was clear. The university was still recognizable – physically, nothing had changed.
But something was different alright.
For once, he did not enjoy the silence that greeted him – something he had yearned for in this rowdy campus. Even sounds of screaming would be a little more comforting, then at least he knew that someone was still alive. His survival would be fleeting if he was the only one left.
Peter shut the door, isolating himself in the power board room once more. He had a few decisions to make, and none of them staying here to await his fate.
Checking that the power was down for certain, he made a wild grab at the wires, pulling them out from their sockets and bundling them up before stuffing them down his pockets. The central power system was down, and all he could rely on now were batteries. The cars – he'd have to make his way to them later.
Before all that, there was something else far more important. Opening the door once more, the professor stepped out into the morning lit corridor. A brisk walk quickly turned into a dash, hands fumbling for the keys. He stood outside his office, pausing for a moment to check that he was truly alone. And then he entered, scrambling like a mad man, desperately organising papers and stuffing them into the metal locker.
0000
The answer would be simple enough for someone to find them. If this was his end, then at least, his work would survive him.
He sat down into his chair, staring vacantly into space. The coffee from last night was still there, now cold, but welcoming. Opening his drawer, a nearly empty box of cookies was retrieved. Spinning around in his chair, the man had his fill of what might very well be his last meal. He laughed, then he cried. He would be called delirious, but he didn't care.
And yet one month later, he was still alive...

Well, he thought. Maybe one day, it would brighten up outside. Until then, work needed to be done, and he wouldn't keep the others waiting on him.

Needless to say, Wataru knew Sawyer Hayes' name now. And detestable as she still ********. He had to be at least a little bit grateful to her. Of course he'd heard tell of the other factions around Delta, but he was very glad he wasn't currently holed up in the prison. Or the ******** mall. So, yeah, they didn't have electricity, but they had pretty strict security, and they had, you know, space for themselves. And running water.
But ********. Sometimes he was just so tired of all this s**t. Food was becoming more and more scarce, and in all honestly, Wataru Sugimoto wasn't a very brave man. He ran a tired hand down his side and huffed quietly to himself. Delta had been a pretty populous city, before all this. Now...the apartments were strangely empty. It was disconcerting.
And something...something really did have to change, if they wanted to, you know, not be eventually killed, or worse, transformed. Food was a perishable, and with the numbers of infected growing, even these apartments would eventually be run down. Wataru just didn't really feel becoming like the instigator of that change.
