User ImageName: Kiunyki
[kEEO-nEEkEE]
Race: Alkidike
Gender: Female
Base Traits:

Insecure
Kiunyki inherited very little of her mother's self confidence, and all of Kaalnia's hidden anxiety. Kiki is always second-guessing herself and comparing herself to others, rarely in a favorable light. She sees other people as unattainably perfect, beyond her ability to mimic and comprehend, despite trying very hard to emulate them. She is always worried about how they might think or feel about her, and sensitive to anything negative they may say about her. Never certain about anything, Kiki may not be a cowardly Alkidike, but she is definitely cautious, wary, and maybe a little jumpy.

Lonely
Kiunyki is that sort of unfortunate individual who can be in a room full of friends and family she knows and loves and still feel terribly, horribly, isolated and alone. She makes friends easily, being a nice sort of girl; but she constantly needs more friends, more reassurances, more friendly contact to reassure her that she isn't alone. Alas, this need is insatiable.

Energetic
Kiki and her mother share a boundless energy that seems to come out of nowhere. Kiunyki is a girl of action, and is constantly in motion. While not exactly hyperactive, and certainly not nearly as bombastic as her mother, it is hard to get Kiki to sit down and stop.

Class:Youngling

Personality:

Kiunyki is all about friends. No isolated, spoiled Alkidike child is she – she wants to be out there, meeting everyone, doing everything. She is not a shallow, fair-weather friend, either – every friend she makes gets her absolute focus and attention, and she would do anything for them, anything at all, whatever they asked. She craves their approval, even when it is readily given, just as much as she craves activity, and is constantly worrying about her friends and what they might think of her.

She is one of those unfortunate people who, no matter the circumstances, still feel deeply and horribly isolated, as if they are missing something vitally important. She surrounds herself with friends, but even when she is with them, even when she is surrounded by people who care about her, she still feels an endless and pervasive loneliness that clouds over all.

She does the only thing she can do – she cleaves tightly to the friends she has, following them around and doing anything she can with them in an attempt to ease the pain. This closeness can be annoying, and she knows it can be annoying, and it is this awareness that drives her anxiety.

What if they hate her? What if they won't be her friend tomorrow? What if she didn't do what they wanted? What if she did it wrong? Kiki holds herself to a high standard – if she does something, she had better do it exactly, perfectly, right. Otherwise, it is worthless and must be done all over again.

And again and again and again. Kiki is nothing if not persistent, and will keep at things until they are to her standards of perfection. She will agonize over things that seem small, and can be very – overly – precise about even the most minute of minutia.

Her anxiety, persistence, and perfecitonism gives the girl an air of terrified desperation. Obviously, she does not believe that failing at anything will see her swallowed up into Oblivion, but she acts that way and to her it may as well. Failure is not an option. Failure will cost her friends. And, without friends, what is she?

Her mother tells her that Kiki is her everything. Her friends tell her she's great, that they love her. Ujana, her best friend, tells her that she is like a little sister to her. Kiunyki loves it and appreciates what they say, but she knows the 'truth': She isn't much at all. She believes, on a deep level beyond words, that if she fails to do something exactly right, everything in her life will fall apart. And, when the dust clears, all that will remain will be her.

Just her.

Kaalnia was a vibrant and vivacious Alkidike known for flirting with anything female and humanoid, be it earthling, hybrid, or Alkidike. She painted her skin and danced with the spear, a boundless font of energy and good-nature. She was generally considered a phenomenon, a force of nature rather than a person.

But person she was, and she had a problem: she had no true love. She had plenty of love, obviously, and she shared it, but there was no one closer to her heart than that of a 'friend' or a 'sister', and it was something she felt she lacked. She needed someone close, someone she could open up to, someone she could really, truly love. Alas, the one person she might have thought she loved had died long ago, and she had never felt that way about anyone else since.

So, after some thought, Kaalnia decided to do something about it. She went to where any young woman goes when they need help.

Her mother.

She told Mother Aisha her problem, and in return, she was granted a lotus.

It wasn't as simple as that, of course. It was Kaalnia's idea to have a daughter, and that idea had required a lot of philosophizing and thinking and contemplating and babysitting. But in the end, she had a lotus, and that lotus eventually bloomed, and out came Kiunyki.

Seeing her daughter, fresh from the blossom, for the first time had a distinct effect on Kaalnia and from the moment she first held the infant in her arms she knew she had found that special someone. Or, rather, love had finally found her.

Kaalnia the flirt shifted surprisingly easily into the role of mother, and Kiunyki should have, at no point, felt unloved. Kaalnia, after all, had plenty of good, solid, wholesome maternal love to give and was a major force of positivity (even when some of the darkness from her past intruded).

But where Kaalnia was like the Sun, Kiunyki was like a black hole. Her need for love was insatiable – which was just fine with Kaalnia. But not with Kiki. There was nothing little Kiki wanted more than to be satiated, to feel happy. So, she clung to people, feeding off of their energy and appreciation, taking as much love as she could, and trying to keep the endless and unfounded fear – that they would hate her if she made a single misstep - at bay...

User ImageFriends:
Kaalnia: Kiunyki's mother. Kiki loves her mother very much, and wishes she was more like her. One day, she is sure, Kaalnia will become frustrated with her, and will stop loving her because Kiki doesn't give anything back. The thought makes Kiki sad, and so she enjoys her mother when she can... One day it will all be gone

No Idea:
Pahana: Ujana's mother and Kaalnia's friend, Kiki doesn't dislike her, but it seems to her that Pahana might not stay with her mother, which means shes leaving... does that mean that Ujana is leaving, too?

Votzhem: He's Kaalnia's friend, and Kiki's first real experience with a halfbreed. He's nice enough, but Kiki is very sensitive to the fact that he also has other places to be. He has a girlfriend, too, and she is certain that he will leave too... and she leaves him be.

Not so nice people:

The flood apparently sated for now, Kiki sat down to eat with her completely waterlogged mother. Kaalnia was exhausted, but Kiki was refreshed. The illo were still in her room and, though her mother was thinking of leaving this tree to find somewhere less leaky, Kiki was oddly sedate with either option.

She took down the box with the illo inside and fed it a few pieces of fruit. Kaa noticed. Although shocked at her daughter's choice of pets, Kaalnia was reluctant to restrict her much, if at all, and certainly not for something as small as this. They would get a nicer box for the critter, sure she could keep it, was her mother's response, and Kiki was happy. Stay or go, it didn't matter. She would have her mama, and her new pet, and Ujana would come back. She would not be alone.

What had started as a trip to see her mama's friend and her uncle had become a disaster. Kiki watched the Ice man walk around the tents, feeling utterly alone and abandoned. If Mama was dead – and she didn't believe the man for a moment that her mama wasn't dead – what would she do? Kiki didn't know if she could get home on her own, and she couldn't ask the bad man, and what would she do?! There had never been any time without her Mama. She wanted her Mama. She wanted her Mama so badly.

She sniffled, wiping her tears away with her bruised wrists as she stared at her mother's prone form, willing her to come back. Willing her to live. Waiting... Because Kiki didn't know what else to do.

Kiunyki was in trouble. Apparently, through her mother's infinite network of sources and friends, someone had heard about the incident in the market. Kiki didn't think that what she had done was wrong – hybrids were bad, after all, and she had made the decision to throw the rock herself, without help. But she still felt bad that her Mama was disappointed, and didn't protest too much when her mother told her she was not allowed out to play with her friends for a whole sevenday. Mama just didn't understand. She wasn't very smart, either: Mama was a hybrid lover – she didn't see why they were bad.

But Kiki did. And even if her Mama kept her inside, even if she didn't want her to, Kiki would protect her Mama from the bad hybrids.

Every time she tried to hate Kaalnia, Kiunyki found that something blocked her. It was simply against her nature, against what made her... her. Kiki couldn't hate her mother. She would love her forever. She could, however, grumble about how ignorant and stupid her mother was, and how clearly she didn't understand anything.

How could her mom have pulled her away like that? Her place was with the extremists, with the strong and beautiful women who dared to stand up to the hybrid pollution and to the foolish earthlings and the world that was meant to be theirs. But her mother had pulled her away.

How could her mother be so stupid? How could she be so foolish? How could she say such clearly wrong things about hybrids? Kiki refused to believe that her mother was weak. But misinformed? Yes. Unwilling to listen? Yes. Stubborn as tree roots? Yes.

Kiki loved her mother... but her mother didn't understand. Maybe, though... She tested the blades of the Ice man in her hand... maybe, someday soon, Kaalnia wouldn't have to understand. Kiki would go off on her own and show her, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she was dead wrong...

Kiki still shook with the memory of the battle, her muscles screaming at her in pain and in triumph – she had survived the fight, and had fought well along side her sisters. At the same time, she had shown herself to be weaker than the rest. Though her youth excused her from the vigor of her more trained Sisters, she knew that her conviction was fragile. It had been shaken in the fight, by the violence and by the appearance of her mother's bugaboo. Kiunyki thought that maybe the great battle against the earthlings would change her mother's view on things, but it clearly had not: Kaalnia was as adamant as ever that everyone was acting like fools, though she put it more colorful and energetic terms. Instead, it was Kiunyki who was shaken, Kiunyki who was unsure.

Kiki didn't know what to believe. Of course, her mother was completely wrong. Kiki had seen first hand that the earthlings were capable of great evil, and that her own tribe had weaknesses that could be traced right to the Earthling's influence. On the other hand, she wasn't sure if she agreed with some of the things that the others had been saying. She had said them herself, too; that the Earthlings were worthless and 'other', mere 'animals', no better than 'vermin'. Kiki didn't know if she had believed it then, but she certainly didn't believe it now. It didn't fit with what she had seen of them. Even Ruelash, the nightmare, was more than a mere animal to be slaughtered and ignored. He was a beast, for certain, a furious storm of blood and death. But he was a notable beast, worthy of respect and, even, admiration. He was strong, stronger than Kiunyki and as strong as her mother, and Kiki knew she had to treat him as such, if she ever met him again.

She looked down at his swords, their hilts clasped tentatively in her hands where her mother had shoved them. Kaalnia would not tell her what had happened at the end of the fight, but Kiki could tell that her mother had not killed him. Kiunyki knew that her mother had her reasons, and did not question them. Instead Kaalnia had taken these blades as trophies.

Kiunyki understood their significance: these were pieces of a nightmare, the fangs that he had used to bite deep into her mother's body, the claws that he had used to very nearly tear her away from life twice. Kaalnia had chosen to defang the monster instead of destroy him, and then, she had given them to Kiki for... what? That was the part that Kiunyki didn't understand.

Kaalnia had thrust them into her hands and vanished into the crowd, clearly upset and unwilling to talk. Kiunyki supposed she would have to try to understand Kaalnia's reasons while she waited for her to return. It would be a nice distraction from the sulleness she felt.

Her mother was usually not difficult to figure out – Kiki knew that her mother had simple desires and wants. This one did take a little thinking, though: why give her weapons?

Kiki had not chosen a weapon before the battle, and had walked into it armed only with a quarterstaff; a glorified stick. She hadn't been expecting what had followed, and she had certainly not been prepared for the carnage, not mentally or equipment-wise. She was lucky to be alive.

She dangled the weapons gingerly in front of her, looking at them with perplexed unease. Did Kaalnia intend her to take them? Did she want Kiki to use them? It seemed a likely option, one that Kiunyki didn't think was such a bad idea the more she thought about it. Blades had, after all, been something she had been starting to favor, though she had always thought she might go the way of the spear like her mother.

Uncertainly, she took the hilts of the blades in each hand, tentatively testing their weights. They did not fit perfectly into her hands – the palm grip was too broad and the guard too close to her knuckles – but Kiunyki was struck by how they seemed to suit her. All they would need were be a couple of improvements and modifications and they would, she realized, be perfect. For her.

Yes... she would take the blades for her own use. It would, she realized with a start, be just like the bandana she wore around her arm. Both were earthling relics, representative of both the earthling that had worn them and of what they stood for. The gear of a bandit-turned-soldier, the blades of a nightmare-turned-real... Would she find more? Would they change her? What would she be, Kiki wondered, when she bore those relics?

A little hint of welcome certainty filtered into her mind as she sat, warming her like sunlight as she toyed with the blades. She was fated to be a warrior for her tribe, fighting the earthlings for the land that they lived on. How could she not be, with these relics adorning her? However... If these relics influenced her fate, if they gave her power, then the earthlings were more than vermin to be exterminated – they were an enemy to be respected and fought. She could not face them with the mindless fervor that had glittered in her sister's eyes, but with honor and strength and certainty. They were people. Enemies, unworthy of their land, but people none the less. Their strength would be turned against them, perhaps, through her, and she would

Kiunyki wasn't sure if she understood, entirely, what to do about that. She didn't know how to explain it, and she didn't know if she was in the right. But at least she knew what to do next – she needed to find someone to talk to, someone to help her sort these things out. A friend, perhaps, who was more certain and experienced than she was. She looked up as her mother's distinctive and colorful form emerged from the crowd once more; she wasn't sure where to find that kind of friend. Her mother was not a candidate, and the only other person she felt she could talk to about this was in exile, now.

She would find a way.

Pale golden light stained Kiunyki's skin as she looked out over the water towards the dark, imposing silhouette of Yael. Soon, that frightening shadow would be her destination, her home for however long she survived on it. She didn't know if she would find anything there, but she could hope – oh, could she hope.

She could hope that the exiled Alkidikes were still alive.
She could hope that they would accept her among them.
She could hope that she would find the acceptance that she sought there.

Hope was free, and easy in the dying light.

Free, like her mother. Kiunyki had always loved her – nothing would ever stand between that. Kiki had always known, deep in her heart, that even though she didn't agree with her mother, and her mother didn't agree with her, that nothing would change their special connection.

Even when Mama's burly friends kept her from running away to join the exiles, back when the war was a fresh and painful memory, Kiunyki had loved her.
Even when Kaalnia spent time with her hybrid and earthling friends, Kiunyki had loved her.
Even when Kaalnia had dragged her across the world to the cold peaks of Sauti to see her hybrid friends, Kiunyki had loved her, and Kaalnia had known it.

Kiunyki had been grateful for that knowledge when she'd heard that her mother had been caught in an avalanche and died. She didn't know how she would have felt if Kaalnia had died with her daughter's hate ringing in her ears, and was glad she never had to find out.

With Kaalnia's death, light and hope had seemed, also, to die for a time. The trek back to Jahuar had been long and miserable, and home hadn't felt entirely like home after that. Without her mother to guide and buffer her, Kiunyki had been all too aware of how people felt about her. It was no secret, of course, that Kiki had been on the side of the Matron, along with other young whelps, and the survivors of that terrible battle talked about her behind her back. Sometimes they talked about her to her face.

Kiunyki felt like an outsider in her own home, and found herself longing to leave – to where, she did not know.

And then the bird came.

Lumikani's letter, at once scolding and encouraging, gave her a place. The exiled Alkidikes were alive, and Kiunyki had been invited – in a way - to join them. They were, she knew, as she packed her belongings and stole South into the forest, was her destination. She belonged with them.

The journey was punishingly hard for Kiunyki to make alone. With every sunrise and sunset, however, when the sky burned with colors bright and vibrant, showing off to the world just as Kaalnia had, she ceased to be alone for a few moments. Sunsets and Sunrises showed her, in those few moments, a piece of her mother's love. Every morning and every evening, her mother loved her and watched over her and was proud of her, even if she still disagreed.

It became a ritual to wake up early each morning and paint herself with Kaalnia's makeup, and to write down the events of the day in the flaming light of the day's end. Ritual helped her survive the punishing heat, the harsh sand, and the painful negotiations she had had to make for her survival and for the boat that would take her to Yael.

Kiunyki never wanted to deal with earthlings after this. Perhaps she hadn't hated them before – her mother had been fond of them, and she had known one – the ice hybrid Votzhem – almost as family. But she had known their true nature, to some degree, and it had been proven when her mother had died with them. Possibly at their hands - she had no doubt that it was the fault of the hybrid and his earthling conspirators that she hadn't come back from her hunting trip. He had snuffed out her light.

Or so he thought. He – or whoever he had worked with – could not be more wrong.

Her mother's light was ever present. Every time the sun tilted towards the horizon, Kiki could hear Kaalnia's laughter, wild and free, echoing in her heart. The paint connected her to that light, just as the bandana connected her to the soldier's resolve and her blades to the nightmare-man's strength.

But her mother had been weak – weakened by association with hybrids and murdered by her carelessness. It pained her to admit it, but Kiunyki knew she had to do admit it, just as she had to carry on. She held some of her mother's joy inside of her, some of Kaalnia's love of life, and she had an obligation to her to make that joy strong again.

As the light turned from gold to flame red, Kiunyki fiddled with her necklace. She'd had it since she was a youngling, an heirloom gift from her mother. It had once belonged to her grandmother, one of Kaalnia's fierce parents. They had been a harsh woman, fierce and unrelenting. In the dark and lonely nights, Kiunyki had decided that that was what the necklace signified: ferocity and pride. It connected her to her elder, and to the true meaning of what it meant to be an Alkidike.

Kiunyki knew that, message or not, allies or not, life on the island would be hard. She didn't care. As long as they were people who accepted her for who she was, she was willing to take whatever that shadowed place threw at her.

After all, she came armed with strength, resolve, joy, and pride. The only way she could lose was if she didn't deserve that acceptance and appreciation in the first place, and then, she might as well be dead.

But, as the last sunlight faded to a blood red and she prepared to set up a campsite, she was hopeful. Things were going to be okay.

The first three fell from their blooms, beautiful children of flowers. In their hands, they held three gifts for the exiles, presents from their mother: Hope, strength, and joy.

Heralds of a new time, mistresses of a new place. Hope to their sisters, scourge to their enemies.

In the sunlight we see a beginning, in that beginning there was an end: an end to weakness and despair.

Our mothers and sisters left behind with Aisha will see that we were right.

Kiunyki blew on the ink to dry it and closed her handmade book, smiling softly in the silence of the evening. Writing soothed her soul, helped her make sense of things. Maybe, one day, someone would read them and remember. Something her mother had taught her - when you write something down, you preserve the memory, and you never forget.

Kiunyki wanted to ensure that no one forgot about these days, even if they wanted to forget her. She would come up with something better later, perhaps, but for now, those words...

They'd do.
