Ruelash was relaxing at the base camp he and Iroia had made for themselves in the jungle. Iroia herself was off with that blue guy, and without Sezarra to bother explore the forest with him, Ruelash was on his own.

So, he practiced his sword work with his Aldabuck. They were quite a team, he and Direk. He and Iroia. He and Direk and Iroia and... maybe blue guy?

He and Direk was less confusing.

"Arright, girl." he said to the black beast, "Lets go through this 'un again..."

"Mama, are we going to go see Iroia?"

Kaalnia grinned down at her child. "sure are!" she said, "Since we were in the area, and all, I figured we could visit them instead of her visiting us for a change...

Kiki smiled eagerly. "Iroia is fun! As is Uncle Votzhem...

"Yup, uncle! I know its confusing, but if he's my brother, you might as well call him uncle."

Kiki, who had tensed in uncertainty, relaxed. "Oh, good." she said. She certainly did not want to be wrong... That would have been most terrible. "Are we close, Mama?"

"Uh..." Kaalnia let go of her girl's hand to take out a ragged, rough-drawn map. She squinted at it, and turned it over and over. "You know, I think we are."

"We're not lost?" Kiki giggled, teasing.

"Haha!" Kaalnia laughed, "Nope! For once, I figured it out!" She took her daughter's hand and strode confidently forward.

Hidden in the trees, the campsite revealed itself in all its... 'glory'... a few tents, some areas for animals to romp around, a cook pot, and a stink.

"Phew." muttered Kaalnia, "She lives like this?! Her and that mysterious friend of hers?" she shook her head, "We've got to get her better lodgings..."

Kiki shrugged. It seemed all right to her - just like Ms. Iroia and not too shabby. She squinted at a nearby meadow, and pointed. "Mama! Look! Its an Aldabuck!" she said, with a trill of laughter.

Kaalnia looked and grinned. "Hey, its all black! She said, "Never seen one like it..." She tensed, nearly crushing her daughter's hand as the Aldabuck's owner came into view.

It was him.

It was him. The man who had nearly killed her all those years ago.

Suddenly, she was there again, nearly dead, the dagger ripping her apart to the cheers of the crowd. She could smell it: the hot sand, the man's sweat, her own blood...

"Mama?" Kiunyki looked up at her mother, gently shifting her hand out. She patted her mother's tightly clenched fist, rubbing it gently. What startled her most was that her mother's hands felt cold and shaky, like the end of a nightmare. "Mama, are you all right?"

Kiki's sweet voice broke her free of then and Kaalnia returned to the Now. She was aware that she shook, that her mouth was dry, that her instincts were screaming at her to run, to take her baby and flee.

All of that, though, was consumed by an old, blistering rage.

"Kiki, get in that tent over there and hide. Mama..." she growled, "Has to take care of things once and for all..." she looked down at Kiki, "If something happens t' me, run, okay?"

She didn't give Kiunyki a chance to respond. "YOU b*****d" she screamed, leaping at the hateful blue man, her spear ready to utterly destroy him, her rage fuelled with the life force of Aisha herself...

It said something about Ruelash's personality or personal habits that he was accustomed to people leaping out at him from nowhere, screaming insults, with their weapons ready to kill him. It happened a lot.

Before he even processed her arrival, Ruelash had moved from training to fighting, sending a wave of ice at the Alkidike as he turned to face her. He felt her blade connect, but he didn't care.

He didn't know whether he knew her or not, but, as Direk took up her position at the Alkidike's back, he grinned, spitting onto the ground.

He'd been bored, and a fight had presented itself. Praise be to Chi... he was gonna have some fun.

"You won't win this time" she snarled. She could still hear the crowd, and could swear she felt the sand as she landed and took up a mobile battle stance. "It won't go the same way!"

Ruelash ignored her taunts, his grin wild as he took her next strike. This was exactly what he had been looking for, and exactly what he had wanted, and - also - exactly his thing. He'd missed the war. He'd missed fighting. He needed the life-or-death action. He had no idea why the lady was attacking him - he couldn't remember all the people he pissed off, and why should he? Surprises were far better.

He laughed with adrenaline-fueled glee and slashed at her rapidly - a thrust, a slash, and another slash, advancing on her rapidly with each one.

Kaalnia felt the blades pass through her flesh and she gasped in terrified pain. She was going to lose... she was going to die... it was happening again...

She'd thought she'd left the nightmares behind, but she saw it again: her, dying, bleeding from a thousand wounds, his face: contorted and vicious...

He wanted to kill her. She would die.

Kaalnia refused to let that happen.

She barely managed to dodge him and darted back, fumbling at her belt for a container she barely remembered buying. It was a fruit, golden and soft-feeling, and sloshing with the potion within. She devoured it before turning back to the battle, newly ready to fight again. "Not this time." she hissed, the juices of the fruit already beginning to burn her lips...

Ruelash smirked as she healed herself with a potion. "You sure 'bout that?" he taunted, his yellow eyes glittering with delight as he leapt, his blades out like the fangs of a terrible beast. His strike was true: he felt the blades sink deep into her, and he laughed at the blood that followed, dark and red and glorious. He still didn't remember her, but it was fun... it was incredibly, wonderfully, beautifully fun.

Thought of Kiunyki, again, brought her a new resolve. She would not do that to her Kiki.

Mother! She called, stabbing forward with her spear, Help me!

She felt, like a sudden surge of soothing warmth, the presence of Aisha, her sweet life force touching the wounds and clearing her lungs as she, empowered, charged with renewed strength at Ruelash...

But he would have been long dead by now if he was unable to deal with surprises. He dodged out of the way neatly, twisting to the side and rolling to her side, bouncing back to his feet and striking back with his blade.

Yeah!

Yeah! This was more like what he was looking for.

C'mon, lady, keep it coming... he thought, his nerves singing with the joy of battle...

What was he?! How did he dodge so effectively?

Kaalnia had only one answer: he was a monster, and she couldn't let him defeat her again. She called upon Aisha's strength again and thrust out at him in a wild, desperate dance. She didn't know if she was screaming or not, her newly clear lungs ringing like bells, but she was certainly screaming on the inside.

She could not be defeated... she had to defeat him.

Kaalnia began to feel cooler, as if her blood was freezing. Not even the burn of the Kie Ja in her system could keep her warm.

But with that cooling and the fatigue that crept in with it, came a spark of reason.

She was going to lose. She needed to calm down and think and do this right: if she struck him frantically, as she was doing, he would kill her. She needed to live. She needed to survive.

She took a deep breath, feeling Aisha's presence still with her, and exhaled quietly. She could do this.
