Continued from this

Ruelash panted, watching her for a moment and then, with some disappointment, put his blades away.

Well, was that it? Was that all the fun he was going to get out of this fight? Now the boring part of cleaning would begin, and he'd have to go back to entertaining himself...

He looked back down at the Alkidike, catching the soft rise and fall of her chest. Wait, she was still alive? That meant he could kill her, and he had every right to, right? She'd tried to kill him.

He took out his dagger and crouched. Well, at least he could have a little more fun before the boring part, right?

Kiki hadn't followed her mother's directive to run. She had watched the whole horrible thing unfold, so terrified she could make no sound as she saw her mother bleed and fight and fall.

It was her worst fear, played out in front of her. Her mother was being taken away from her, by this man and his blades.

Finally, she found her voice. ”NO!” she screamed, throwing a stone at the blue man, and picking up another as she began to run towards him, ”Get away from my mother!” she threw the stone, ”You can't take her away!” she picked up Kaalnia's spear – far bigger than she was – and brandished it shakily, ”You can't!”

Bonk

Ruelash flinched and jerked away, snarling as he turned to face the source of his pain, his body ready to face another enemy. He had many, and he didn't care. What foe would he fight now? What creature would be his enemy?

He blinked at the angry little girl and frowned down at her spear, which dripped with some of his own blood. ”Whoa.” he said, putting up a hand, palm out, and backing away. He wasn't going to hurt a kid. What had her so upset?

He squinted through the haze of sweat, blood, and his fading battle-rush. Mother? Huh. They did look alike. ”What, she's yer ma?” he shrugged, ”Fine, you can have her.” he said with a shrug.

Kiki jabbed the spear at him and nearly fell down from the weight – it was so heavy! How did mama swing it around like she did? Kiki wanted to drop it, but if she did, she'd lose her mama.

”Go away!” she screamed, then pushed her mother with her foot. ”Mama?” she said, ”Mama?” her voice became pleading, but Kaalnia didn't move, shifting limply in a pool of blood.

”Mama!” she shrieked, turning to Ruelash as her eyes stung with tears, ”You killed my mama!” she charged at him, sobbing snottily, ”Give her back!”

Ruelash barely managed to dodge out of the way of the spear, impressed at the kid's spirit. But she wasn't worth an actual fight, and something about her crying face... well it made him feel odd. Uncomfortable even.

”Look...” he said awkwardly, putting down his dagger and showing her his empty hands. He glanced at the Alkidike lying on the ground, assessing. Had she died already? But no. He could see her breathing. He could see her bleeding. ”She 'ent dead yet.” he said gruffly, though he was trying to be reassurring. ”Tell ye what.” he said, watching her with some wariness – not able to use her spear or not, she could still gut him with a lucky shot.

”Ye want her to live? I kin help.”

Kiki jabbed the spear awkwardly at him, biting back her sobs as best she could. ”No!” she shrieked at him, ”You're a liar! You hurt my mama! You can't save her!” her arms began to tire from Kaalnia's spear, but she kept it up and brandished anyway. ”You're bad! You're a bad person and you can't take her from me! I won't let you!” Summoning all the bravery she could muster, she took a shaky step towards him. She had no idea what she would do next – she'd never used a weapon, not a full sized one and not in this way. Never before. But she would do something, and she knew she had to get him away. ”Go away!” she wailed, ”Go away! I won't let you take her from me!”

She wanted her mama...

Ruelash didn't move, his hands upraised. The kid was really gutsy – really, incredibly gutsy. But she was also stupid – stupid like the rest of the world. Ruelash found himself disappointed in her – the kid should know better. Kids usually did.

”Sure, fine.” he said, looking down at her – and keeping part of his gaze on the shining crystalline blade, ”I could go, sure. All for it. You ain't old enough t' fight an' that there spear could gut me real good...” he shrugged. Maybe she wasn't too old and dumbed enough to listen to reason. He hoped she did. Ruelash resorted to reason only on rare occasions. ”But then, I guess yer mama's gonna die.” he said, his voice bored, ”There ain't nobody around fer miles o' jungle. By the time anybody comes t' help ye, yer mama'll go to Bergchi and there ain't no taking her from there. 'Chi's clutches are hard t' break.” He laughed, a short huff. ”Or ye can shut up, put that stick down, and let me help.” he made as if to turn around, ”But hey, 's your choice, brat.” Yup. Her choice, not his.

Kiki hesitated, her dark eyes flickering uncertainly to the side and then back to the ice man. Her arms were tiring, and the weakness in them – as well as her own fear – allowed the spear to lower. ”I don't want her to die...” she whimpered, frowning. She didn't know what to do. She didn't trust this man, not at all. He had hurt her mother. She was dying because of him.

But Kiki also knew that the camp was isolated. Her mother had said so herself, not long before they had arrived. It was far away from everything, like a hidden paradise, and Kiki had liked that about it.

Had.

Now it was just a hidden... something else. Kiki had no words for such a terrible thing. Kiki could not concieve of a world without her mother. Kiki didn't want that.

The spear tip angled towards the ground as Kiki began to sob, the repressed bursts erupting forth in her terror. She wanted her Mama. She wanted her Mama back.

”Wh-what will you do?” she asked.

Seriously? Stupid kid. She was still bawling and being stupid when her Ma was on the line? Even Ruelash would have put his stupidity and bloodthirst aside for his ma. At least, he thought so.

This was stupid. She was stupid. He moved quickly, knocking her to the ground. The spear fell from her hands, and he picked it up, holding it out of reach. ”Disarmin' ye for a start.” he commented, conversationally.

Then, casually, he walked to one of the tents in their camp and placed the spear on one of the hide holders – shelves that held things off of the ground. And then, equally unhurried, he dug into his supplies.

”And now, “ he said, shoving her out of his way as she attempted to hinder him, ”I'm gonna clean her up an' close her wounds, stop her bleeding...” he came out with the medical treatment equipment, glaring at the child. ”Ye got a problem with that? I'm gonna save yer mama. So ye'll shut up an stay shut up.”

And with that statement, and all the sour-faced intensity of Ruelash on a hunt, he stalked towards Kaalnia's prone form...

”Gah!” Kiki's back hit the ground. She cried out again as the weapon was taken from her – her only source of protection, her only assurance that the man would do what she told him, her only piece of her mother in this horrible place. ”No! No!” she scrambled to her feet and went after him, attacking him with a flailing punch, ”That's... Oof!” she landed, again, on her backside.

Before she could resume her attack, however, she heard his explanation. ”Your going to... save her?” she whispered, confused, ”But...” Why? He'd been the one to hurt her, after all.

”Didn’t I just say that?!” he snapped at the kid, giving her a pointed glare as he gestured to an already heating kettle of water, ”I said I was gonna save her, and I will, and yer gonna shut up while doing that, ye hear? So… Shaddup. Make yerself useful.” he waved his hand at her, ”When that there gets t’ boiling, an’ it won’ be long, ye bring it to me.” he gave her a warning look, his body language threatening, but restrained. ”An’ no funny stuff or I let yer stupid fool o’ a mama die and punt ye on yer way.”
PostPosted: Sat May 09, 2015 6:57 am

... Punt?

Kiki did not know what that word meant, but she did know this: Mama’s life was forfeit. Kiki didn’t know how to save her, and this man was obviously lying - he was a bad man, after all. He’d been the one to do the injuries to her in the first place.

Kiki’s hands balled up into fists. She was weaponless, helpless. ”I don’t trust you.” she said, as the kettle began to steam. She moved towards it, a sudden thought occurring to her. Hot water HURT, and if she needed to hurt the man...

”I don’t care.” said Ruelash, ”Trust me, don’t trust me, whatever. Don’t care.” he began to investigate the wounds properly - it helped that he had made them, because he knew them better than he normally would. He knew how deep he’d gotten, how much force he’d put behind the blows, what he’d been aiming for… Yes, he knew the wounds. ”Now gimme the water.” he made a grabbing gesture, glancing over.

Kiki lifted the kettle, her body tense and cold. This was nothing like when she had held the spear - nothing at all. Now she felt intent - she could hurt him, on her own terms, in her own way. She had power, suddenly, to change everything. Even if she couldn’t save Mama, she could make this bad man suffer. She could make him hurt.

But what if he is going to help she thought, right when she could easily splash him with the scalding stuff, What if I do this, and Mama dies? It was then that she felt another thing: consequence.

If she did something, it would come back to haunt her. Grudgingly - but not without some feeling of power, she handed him the kettle, and backed away quietly. She sought another weapon, something to hold to keep some of the power in her little hands.

There. A knife. She picked it up and held it gingerly, fearfully…

Hopefully.

”There. Was that so hard?” he said, rolling his eyes sarcastically as he took the kettle from her. ”Now shaddup, an’ let me do this.” He was about to repeat his threat, but he decided against it. Why waste the breath? He’d said it, and either the brat would listen, or she wouldn’t. He’d given her fair warning.

All right

He’d said he would do this, and he could do this, and he would. He knew how, too, pretty well. There was one problem - he’d never helped someone else like this before. It was usually just himself, either being treated by himself or by someone else. So, it was kind of odd for him.

Still, he would do it. Because he said…

Ruelash growled at the circular thought, and decided to get to work. First, he washed the biggest, baddest wound with the hot water, noting the twitch that the crazy woman made as he did so. See? he wanted to say to the brat behind him, Not dead.
