❝ entry. ❞ Hi, I'm Sorrel, and this is my journal. Mum gave it to me this morning and told me I should write in it whenever I could, so that's what I'm doing.
I came to my new house for the first time yesterday. It's pretty small, but I have my own room so I don't mind, even though my room is small too. Mum told me that this is my big sister's old room, but she doesn't live here any more, so I get to have it. I have a big brother too. Their names are Calyra and Valyn. I haven't met either of them yet, but Mum says I would like them and they would like me too. I hope she's right because she says they might come visit us soon.
When I got home yesterday, Mum brought me to my room and help me put my clothes away. Then we went downstairs to the kitchen and told me all about a lot of things while she made lunch, like my brother and sister, and her job, and what she likes to do. She also asked me about what kind of stuff I like. We ate grilled cheese sandwiches and talked for a long time. Then Mum showed me around the rest of the house. Her bedroom is the biggest, and my room and my brother's old room are the same size. There's a TV and a computer in there now. The bathroom upstairs is mine because Mum has one in her bedroom. Then I went to my room and put away the rest of my things. We had spaghetti for dinner and watched TV until it was time for bed.
It's kind of weird being in a new place, but I think I'm going to like it here. Mum said she wants to show me some of her drawings when she finishes doing the laundry and she said she has another present for me, so I'm going to go see if she's done yet. Bye, journal! I'll write in you again soon.✖ ✖ ✖

❝ action. ❞ Sorrel walked down the stairs as quietly as she could, not wanting to alert her mother of her approach in case she wasn't done with the laundry yet. But when she peered around the wall that separated the stairwell from the living room her mother was smiling at her, and she blushed a faint orange.
"Come over here," Lunar beckoned with a grin. Sorrel hesitated, but noticed that the laundry was piled neatly in a basket next to the couch. "I was just about to call you down," added her mother, and as the girl walked over, she lifted a black sketchbook that had been resting on the couch beside her onto her lap.
"Are your drawings in there?" Sorrel asked.
"Yep. Ready to see?" Sorrel nodded, leaning against the woman's side, eyes trained expectantly on the closed cover of the sketchbook.
They spent a while flipping through the sketchbook, Lunar explaining each one as she deemed necessary and Sorrel watching on in awe. Once they had finished looking through that one, they moved onto the next, and the cycle repeated.
"...And this is you," Lunar said with a grin when they had reached the end of the final sketchbook, pulling a sheet of loose-leaf paper from the very back of the last few pages. "I drew it for you after breakfast; I hope you like it. It's one of your presents."
Sorrel took the page in her little hands and stared in wonder at the image sketched on its surface. Then she looked up at her mother with wide, curious eyes. "Presents? Even she thought there was only going to be one; Lunar had, after all, said 'present' earlier. But the woman grinned and stood up, holding up one finger.
"Wait right here."
After a few minutes of shuffling upstairs, Lunar came back down holding a box wrapped in blue wrapping paper. She sat herself back down next to the girl and handed it over. It wasn't very heavy despite its size. After an encouraging nod from her mother, Sorrel tore off the paper to find a nondescript cardboard box. However, the shape of the box was deceiving. Inside was what appeared to be a tiny notebook with a pencil and eraser tied to it with a thin yellow ribbon. Upon closer inspection, Sorrel discovered the notebook was actually a sketchbook, and an ear-to-ear smile stretched across her face.
"I hope you like it," Lunar said, blushing a little despite her obvious excitement. "I know you said you didn't draw a lot, but I thought that maybe if you tried it you'd like it."
Sorrel placed the sketchbook back into the box and leaned over to give the woman a hug. "Thank you, Mum," she mumbled into Lunar's shoulder. "I like it."✖ ✖ ✖

❝ action. ❞ When Lunar walked into her daughter's room, Sorrel didn't look up. She hadn't noticed - she had her face so close to a page of the sketchbook she had received days before that her nose almost touched it as she drew, eyes intent, the movement of her hands clumsily deliberate. The woman couldn't help but smile, glad that her daughter had taken such a shining to drawing. She crept closer to the bed as quietly as she could and attempted to peer over the girl's shoulder. She was only able to catch a glimpse of the messy lines and awkward limbs of a drawing of a girl before Sorrel finally noticed she was there and turned to look at her silently, eyes wide. "I'm sorry, honey," Lunar said, barely concealing her smile with a hand. "Did I scare you?"
Sorrel shook her head and moved over so that her mother could sit with her at the edge of her bed. "It's okay, Mum. I was drawing."
"I saw! What were you drawing? It's very pretty."
Sorrel blushed a faint orange but looked pleased. "I was drawing me."
"I thought it was you. She had your eyes." Lunar's smile broadened. "Guess what."
"What?" The look of curiosity returned to Sorrel's eyes. What surprise did her mother have this time? She had already gotten so much, she didn't know what was left.
"Your brother and sister are going to come see you next month!"
For a brief moment the girl only looked more surprised, but quickly an excited grin stretched her lips. "Really?" The expression brightened when her mother nodded in affirmation. She had almost forgotten that they were going to come visit her at some point. When she was little, before she came home with Mum, she had always wondered what it would be like to have a brother and a sister. And soon she would find out.
However, it dawned on her that she had only seen them in pictures her mother had shown her over dinner the first few nights, and she began to feel concerned. What if she didn't recognize them when they came to the door? What if she thought they were tall but ended up mistaking them for someone else because they were very short, or the other way around? Lunar caught the girl's look of concern and frowned herself. "What's wrong?"
"Mum, how tall are they?"
Quickly the smile returned to her mother's face. "They're both much taller than I am."
"Taller than you?" Sorrel gazed at her mother in wonder, who almost had to laugh. To a girl who hadn't hit any growth spurts yet, 5'2" must seem like a rather impressive height.
"Yes, honey. Taller than me. Your sister comes up to here," she held her hand several inches above her head, "and your brother is like a lamp post!" She held her hand above her head at its full length to demonstrate her point, and her daughter gasped.
"He must have a lot of trouble with doors."
Lunar did laugh then. "Yes. Sometimes he has to duck."
For the next little while, the two of them continued to discuss the finer details of Sorrel's step-siblings that couldn't be seen in the pictures - what they liked, how they dressed, what they sounded like, what they did now that they weren't at home. At one point Lunar informed Sorrel that her brother owned a cat, and the look of envy on the girl's face made her laugh again.
"He got the cat after he moved out," she explained. "Maybe one day you'll get a pet too." And Sorrel's eyes lit up like she had just been told yes, you can have ice cream before dinner tonight, and every night from now on.
Finally the conversation died down, and Lunar left the room to go make dinner for the both of them. After her mother left the room, Sorrel turned to a new page in her sketchbook and spent the next hour drawing what she thought meeting her siblings would be like.✖ ✖ ✖

❝ action. ❞ The day Sorrel had arrived at her new home, Lunar had given her an apple for a snack - it had been green, and more tart than any other apple the girl had ever tasted. She loved it, and insisted on having it as a snack every day since. Normally, Lunar would cut it up for her into exactly eight wedges and carve out the seeds. However, today was a little bit different.
Lunar was in the shower when Sorrel decided she wanted to have a snack, right then and there. She didn't really feel like waiting twenty minutes for her mother to be out to get it for her, either. So rather than wait, she went to the fridge and retrieved an apple. And rather than eating it whole like a reasonable child would, she decided she was going to try to cut it up herself. So, after washing it (at least she got that part right), she retrieved the same knife and cutting board her mother always used and brought them to the kitchen table along with the apple.
Carefully, the girl angled the sharp knife over the apple, and was able to cut it in half as neatly as any child could. Then, she cut the halves into quarters, also without incident. In this case, however, it did not seem as though the third cut was the charm. The wedge was balanced awkwardly on an unstable surface, and when she went to cut it, the knife slipped and sliced into her finger instead. It wasn't a particularly deep cut, but the combination of pain and surprise brought tears to Sorrel's eyes. She dropped the knife to the table and wailed, tears already rolling sluggishly down her cheeks.
Luckily it was only about a minute later when Lunar came sprinting down the stairs, wrapped hastily in a towel, hair dripping on the floor - apparently she had just been getting out when she heard her daughter crying.
"Baby, what's --" she began, but stopped and groaned in dismay when she caught sight of the knife and the blood on the girl's finger. "Oh, Sorrel, you should have waited for me - that's dangerous. Here, let me have a look..." Sorrel let her mother take her hand. She bit her lip to try to hold back the sobs but ended up sniffling anyway. She looked absolutely miserable.
"I'm sorry," she said, sounding as miserable as she looked. "I was hungry, and..."
"It's okay, honey. It's not that bad. Just hold on while I go get you a bandaid..." The woman got up and left the room, returning moments later with a brightly-coloured bandaid and some tissue. She sat back down and swabbed the blood off Sorrel's finger with the tissue, then helped her apply the bandaid. "There," she said with a smile, "better?"
Sorrel nodded, wiping her nose with the heel of her palm. "Thank you, Mum. I won't do it again."
"Good. Now, you go play, and I'll finish cutting your apple for you." Lunar watched the girl as she got up and wandered into the living room, then turned to clean up the bloody tissue. However, when she went to pick it up, she was startled to find a hole in the tissue that she had sworn hadn't been there seconds ago. "What in the world..." she murmured, examining it closely. At first, it seemed as though nothing at all was happening - maybe it was her imagination? But then, before her eyes, the hole began to expand. Almost like...
"Acid," Lunar said, raising her eyebrows. "Her blood is acidic." And it was eating through the thin tissue.
The first sign of her abilities.✖ ✖ ✖
