A few hours later Sorrel sat in her room, playing with a set of dolls her mother's friend had given her as a welcoming gift. She wasn't even thinking about her cut finger anymore - the only time it bothered her was when she hit it against something. In fact, she had almost forgotten about the cut and the bandaid completely. And she would have, if it wasn't for the fact that - in the middle of a conversation between the two dolls about whether or not cheese tasted orange - she spotted two halves of the bright bandage hanging from her finger.

With curiosity she put down the dolls to examine it closely. She didn't remember cutting the bandage on anything. But when she tried to touch the two halves together, she saw that there was a ragged gap between the two halves, as though something had burned a hole between them. After a long few minutes of examining the two halves with avid curiosity, she pulled the both of them from her finger and dropped them to the floor in front of her - to be disposed of later, when she was finished examining the wound. Orange blood started to ooze slowly from the cut again, and Sorrel wasa about to get up to go ask her mother for another bandage when something curious happened.

When Sorrel went to lower her hand, a tiny flash of light not unlike a reflection in a diamond caught her eye and stalled her. Raising the hand, she once again brought her finger close to her eyes for a better look. Much to her surprise, it looked as though she had a thin layer of something coating the cut. It was clear, but when she touched it with her other hand she found it was hard.

For more long minutes she examined it, tilting her hand this way and that, watching as the strange substance caught and reflected the light of the room. Whatever it was, she wasn't bleeding any more - her finger barely hurt. She wondered how it had gotten there.

Suddenly, the coating seemed to expand before her eyes, stretching to take over more of the skin on her hand. Sorrel jumped and yelped, holding her hand away from her as far as her arm could reach, staring at it with wide eyes as it shrank back to its original size.

"Huh?" she said aloud, completely dumbfounded. Then, after recovering herself somewhat, she pulled herself to her feet and ran downstairs to tell her mother what had just happened.

Hi Journal!

Guess what! Mum says I have a special power! Isn't that cool? She says my blood is special, and she says I can make my own special bandaids if I hurt myself. I was playing with the dolls auntie gave me, and my bandaid came off, but I made my own bandaid without even thinking about it. I was so surprised! Then I went and told Mum and she said I could make bandaids whenever I want if I think about it. So I tried, and it got bigger!

And Mum says my brother and sister are going to be here tomorrow! I'm so happy! I finally get to meet them.

I'll tell you all about it later! Bye!

"If you watch a pot, your water will never boil," Lunar called from the other room.

Sorrel turned to face the kitchen's entryway. "But I'm not watching a pot," she reminded her mother. "I'm waiting for my brother and sister."

The sound of Lunar's laugh floated in from the living room, getting louder as she walked into the kitchen to sit next to her daughter where she was kneeling on the couch by the window. "What I mean is," she explained as Sorrel repositioned herself to sit next to her, "it'll feel like a lot longer if you stare out the window while you wait than if you do something else."

"Oh."
Sorrel's eyes brightened with understanding. It had felt like a very long time that she had been sitting there, even though it had probably only been five or ten minutes.

"How about we bake some cookies while we wait? I'm sure your brother and sister would be happy." Lunar couldn't help but laugh once again as the girl exclaimed once in delight.

"Can we really?"

"Of course!"

Seeing as though Valyn and Calyra weren't supposed to arrive for at least another hour, the two of them had plenty of time to bake. After getting all the ingredients out, Lunar measured out the proper amounts of each, and let Sorrel stir them together with a wooden spoon. "It's slower this way," Lunar said, helping her daughter cream the butter and sugar together, "but I find it much more rewarding than using an electric mixer." Sorrel nodded fervently in agreement even though she had never used an electric mixer before.

The doorbell rang just as they were pulling the first batch out of the oven. "Right on time!" said Lunar, putting the hot baking sheet on the top of the stove. Sorrel half ran to the door but didn't open it; instead, she stood in front of it and fidgeted, lower lip caught tightly between her teeth. Her mother raised an eyebrow as she pulled off the oven mitts. "You can answer the door, you know. They won't bite."

Sorrel gave her mother a look that said, MUM, I know that! before unlocking the door and pulling it open.

On the other side of the door was a tall woman with tanned skin whose light brown hair was pulled back from her face with a hairband. A warm smile stretched across her face as Sorrel gaped up at her in awe for several moments. "You're taller than Mum," was the first thing the blue-haired girl was able to get out.

Calyra's smile broke out into a grin. "You probably will be too, when you grow up." She lowered her voice to a stage whisper, leaning forward and casting a surreptitious glance over in Lunar's direction, as though she were telling Sorrel a secret. "She's not very tall." Sorrel looked over her shoulder at their mother anxiously, worried that she had been offended, but the woman was smiling.

"Unfortunately for me, Caly's right. I'm never going to get any taller than this - you, on the other hand, have hope." She pushed off of the counter she was leaning on and wandered over to the door, peering behind Calyra. "Where's Val? I thought he was coming with you."

A peculiar expression that Sorrel didn't understand flashed over Calyra's face; she watched, confused, as her sister and mother traded coded looks. "He sent me a text today to tell me he couldn't make it. He said the cat got sick last night and he has to take him to the vet," Calyra explained.

Lunar pressed her lips together. "Well then," she said with finality, "I'm sure he'll come another time. Do you want some cookies?"

"Yeah!" Sorrel chirped. "We baked them for you! They just came out of the oven."

The strange expression was gone from Calyra's face as she looked down at her sister, the warm smile back in place. "I would love to try some of your cookies."

Hi journal!

I got to meet my big sister yesterday! Her name is Calyra but she told me to call her Caly. My big brother didn't come because his kitty was sick, but mum said he would visit again soon. I hope so! I had a lot of fun with my sister! Mum and I made cookies and Caly said they were really good. I asked her lots of questions and mum told me to slow down, but Caly started asking me questions too so it was okay. Then we went to the park and Caly bought me ice cream! She and mum made dinner for us, we had chicken. It was yummy. Then I got to stay up late, because I didn't want to go to bed before she left. It was really fun! I hope my big sister comes and visits me again!

I have to go now, mum says it's bed time because I stayed up late last night so can't stay up late tonight. Good night, journal!

Hey Journal! Wow, it's been a long time since I last wrote. Things have just been so crazy around here, it's been hard for me to even keep up. Lots of things have happened, and important things too. I've grown up, for one! I'm officially a teenager now. Mum says I get to move into the dorms soon, which I'm really excited about. Apparently I'm going to be rooming with Adeline, which is even better. It'll be awesome to have a friend around.

Oh, and I also have a brother now. His name's Sergei, and he's younger than me. He can be annoying sometimes, but I don't really mind him that much. I mean, in comparison to Theo, Sergei's a complete angel. I feel really bad for Adeline, having to put up with that brat all the time. I hope he grows up soon, but by the looks of it, he's going to be a little snot for a long time to come. Ugh. At least when we're in the dorms we'll get to have a break from our brothers for a little while. Sure, they'll move in eventually, but at least we won't have to be around them all the time - thank God. (Even if Sergei isn't as bad as Theo, he still gets on my nerves. He leaves his stuff everywhere, for one.)

I should probably go to bed now, though. It's getting pretty late and I have some stuff to do in the morning. Goodnight, Journal - hopefully it won't be quite as long before I write again.

Looks like I forgot to write again. Whoops!

Adeline and I moved into our dorm room, and it was horrible. The room was all grey and drab and there was only an old TV in the corner - Adeline let me have the bed closest to it, which was nice of her, but a lot of the time we both end up just sitting on my bed. Anyway, she thought the room was terrible too. So the two of us have been working together to redecorate. We bought a rug for between our beds, and a new lamp, and some other things like candles sitting on the counters and things. It's made it a little more homey and a little easier on the eyes, which is nice.

Sergei moved in recently too. I don't see him a lot outside of the halls and meal time, but it's fine by me. He was never very good at being clean anyway - I was tired of cleaning up after his messes! Living with another girl is so much nicer. No clothes everywhere, and it smells so nice in our room. Sergei's room always smelled like dirty socks. I miss home sometimes, but I think I like living by myself.
