xxxxxxxxxxxDecisions Decisions. • Why she chose to come to Sidekick Academy.

Paint was quickly stroked across a blank canvas. The light blue that had been added stood out against all the white of the empty space left open for creation. This fine line, this small stroke would be the beginning of something beautiful. At least that is what Avalbane would tell herself every time she went to paint. Another stroke splashed some darker blue on the canvas, slightly mixing with the color before. Her fingers gripped the end of the paint brush tightly as she continued to slosh colors on the canvas. It was times like this, in her solitude, that her mind wondered the most. She could see sparkling blue skies and rushing white water. All of it vividly in her mind as if she was standing right in front of it. These were the images that she would try to create each time she painted. Some of these images she recreated and they took their rightful place up on her walls. Others, however, would never turn out like they should. Those images were discarded and thrown away like they had never been created before. As she painted, she took a step forward and placed her barefoot back on the wooden ground. The old place her food rested no had small ice shards slowly melting on it. They were formed from the coldness of her body. Avalbane was so use to it that she completely forgot about the frost that developed under her.

Some steps in the other room stirred her from her day dreaming and she turned to look. Her mother had entered the house a little earlier and made her way into Avalbane's doorway. "I see you are painting the scenery again aren't you?" She spoke to her daughter with a bit of a rough tone. You could tell she was tired from work and thinking about the rest of the day. Avalbane now looked down at the painting she had been mindlessly creating. It was the image of a white building sitting valiantly on an island and looking over some crashing waves. She wasn't surprised to see this image again, if one looked at her walls they would notice three others similar to it. Setting down her paintbrush on the easel she turned fully to her mother. "Is ea máthair. Coinneoidh mé go bhfaca sé i mo aisling." Avalbane would always choose to speak in her native tongue if given the chance. Her home planet, Ennis, spoke an old form of Irish. Since leaving that planet and moving to Metropolis, learning the new language was very hard on her. Her sentences were choppy and her English was not good. Moreover, her Irish accent would sometimes make it difficult for other people to understand what she was saying. This only made her shyness worse. She was very insecure about the fact that she was illiterate in this language. Writing and reading were even more difficult for her, so she chose not to do those things.

Avalbane's mother shook her head, "You know," She started, turning her back to her daughter and looking back into the kitchen she would soon be using, "You really need to speak in this language more. It is the only way you will get better. I want you to be able to attend school at some point. All you are doing now is making that step even harder on yourself." Looking back over her shoulder at Avalbane, she sighed, "And try not to keep your feet in one place too long. The landlord will not be happy with lots of water damage." With that she left the room and went to the kitchen to begin cooking.
Avalbane dropped her head and plopped down on her old bed. Eyeing the area her feet were once at, she could see lots of frost that had developed the whole time she was painting. She knew her mother was not mad at her, they had a great relationship, but her mother also did not seem sensitive to her needs or need to understand her powers. Instead of powers like they were, they had just become a burden in the house. That was not what powers should be, they should be a joy, something unique about a person. This was especially true on Ronth. Since the crash landing, Avalbane had not met anyone who was like her or her mother. Everyone else was like her father. Being so insecure about her powers already, this made it even worse. She did not want to step outside for fear someone would notice. Also, her eyes glow, and that was odd enough for people. Sometimes she could play it off like it was just a twinkle in her eye or something, but not all the time. She had learned to start running from people when they asked questions instead.

As she pondered more on the differences in her life and the one back on Terra, she decided to get off the bed and go sit by the window. As she hopped off the bed, her toes caught some wood on the floor and she went tumbling forward. "Aehhhh!" She called out as she slapped into her easel and paints. The easel fell to the ground with a thud, a noise she would soon make as well. Her body slapped on the wood and knocked some air out of her. The paint that once called the easel home had been sent flying through the air and slapped all over the bedroom wall. Upon seeing the large mess she had just made, Avalbane squeaked like a mouse and frantically tried to get up, falling again in the process. Quick and awkwardly rushing to her feet, Avalbane started grabbing things from the dresser against the wall and wiping the paint away. She knew, just knew, her mother would walk into the room soon and see what she had done. Pulling an old shirt from the floor, she managed to clean up most the paint, though her wall would be stained for a while now. Sighing and sitting down against the desk in the floor, she spoke to herself. "Mums roit, oi nade ter talk more in dis language. It 'ill 'elp me in de long run." Her think accent broke through the silence of the room.

As she sat against her dresser, she pressed her left hand down on the ground and felt a thick paper below her palm. Grabbing the thing and pulling it out from under her dresser, she realized it was an envelope. That's fierce quare. She thought to herself as she ripped it open and unfolded the letter. The first thing it said was 'We find you. You do not find us' That sentence by itself was odd, but as she kept reading she soon found out her abilities and powers were not alone. What she was reading was an invitation to a Super Power School. After she finished reading over everything, she nodded, this is what Avalbane would do. Instead of sitting at home and painting, she was going to go to this new school and learn about her powers. That was the one thing that stood out the most. She could learn to use her powers. PERFECT. "Mum! Mum!" She ran out of the room, sliding and hitting a wall slightly, she bounced off and flew down the hallway. "Mum! Oi nu a school oi want ter go ter!" Her mother turned from the crock-pot and looked at her. "Is it far away?" Avalbane went to hand her the papers, but they were blank now. "Umm, aye....its loike a university though. an' 'tis perfect for me." Her mother didn't mind, this would get Avalbane out of the house and close to some other people her age. Though she was young, only thirteen, it was normal on Ennis and she did not think much of it.

The next day, Avalbane would pack her things, get on a boat and head over to her new school. Her parent were thrilled, but she was very frightened by the idea. What had she done? Now she would be forced around other people. It was not something she was looking forward too, but at the same time, she was.

xxxxxxxxxxxFamily Matters. • Avalbane has a tough decision to make about her home planet and her new one.

It was a cloudy day, one that actually made Avalbane want to stay outside and admire the sky. The clouds looked fluffy and bright, almost like white cotton candy. How could most people spend their days inside when the weather was so beautiful and cool outside? On her way outside, Ava had overheard people talking about rain and the chance that the water would be pouring from the sky soon. Possibly it had to do with all the clouds or it was just one of those dark days and they were assuming. Either way, Ava was sitting outside in the grass, looking up at the sky and thinking about her time here. Although the years had went by rather fast, she had made a few friends, met a few students, and learned a few things. Sometimes she thought back on what life would be like on her old Planet, but it was never more than just a passing thought. This was her home planet and Avalbane was happy to be here. On one of her first missions she learned to control her powers a little better. She still wasn't spectacular at any of it and never really got a chance to use them, but she still felt like she knew herself better.

As she sat in the soft green grass on campus, she heard a loud beep ring across the sky and then someone's voice call out her name. This was the second time she was called for over the PA system. Since her first time invovled a mission she went on, Ava assumed this would be another one of those. Instead of heading to a back office to speak with someone, she had to go to the front desk. That was fine, maybe it wasn't as secret a mission.

Pushing herself up off the ground, Ava wiped the grass from her bottom and headed to the front desk. Upon her arrival, a man held out a phone to her stating that her father was on the other line. This was odd since her parents usually only called on holidays or special occasions. Confused, she grabbed the phone and pressed it up to her head. "Owaya father." It was really the only greeting she could think to say since it was not a holiday. Her father's voice sounded worried and off, like something was going on. He tried to hide it, but it was kind of obvious to Avalbane.

"Hello dear. Are you alone, somewhere no one else can hear you? If not then just reply in Ennian, we will finish the conversation that way." He was tired and Avalbane knew it. She ended up looking up to see Alex just sitting there, smiling at her, fully unaware of what was going on. In all honesty, Avalbane was freaked out, she didn't know what to think.

"Cad é athair?" Since there was someone here, just asking her father what was up in Ennian would be the easiest to do. This would give him the idea that they were not alone and to switch to their native language.

He understood what she asked and took a deep breathe. "Pharaoh Abernathy fuair ahold de dúinn, ní mór dúinn a thabhairt ar ais. Tá an daonra ag fáil bháis go tapa, ní mór dúinn ar ais." He paused for a moment waiting for an answer, listening to Avalbane breathe. "Tuigim gá duit am chun smaoineamh. B'fhéidir ba chóir duit teacht abhaile agus is féidir labhairt leis an muid thar." He asked her to return home so the family could talk it over.

Avalbane was still silent, at first she nodded her head slowly but quickly realized her father couldn't see that. "Is ea athair. Lig dom a fháil ar roinnt rudaí." She told him she needed to pack and they both said goodbye. Her parents would pick her up at the dock on Ronth and head back home to talk everything over. She handed the phone back to the man and thanked him, heading towards her dorm room.

Her walk to the room felt like it took an eternity, she just couldn't believe what she was hearing. What happened to the population? Was there a war? Did a natural disaster happen? Did the Goddess take her wrath out on the people? Was it something to do with their religion? Were the natural powers of the people disappearing? With all these thoughts in her head, Avalbane almost forgot about other important things; however, upon reaching her dorm room door, she automatically thought of her life here. What would she do about all her friends she had made here? Well, she really only had Tabby, Theo, and kind of Clowrey. Her semi crush on Sharp Shooter was still there too. Oh and her roommate Violet. How would she keep in touch with all of them? Especially Theo?

Opening the door, Ava noticed Violet was not there. Which was good, she didn't want to deal with that right now. She could feel her heart slowly sinking lower and lower into her body as she stepped further and further into the room. A tear started to swell up into her eyes and managed to struggle free, rolling down her cheek. Halfway down her face, the tear froze to her skin and she wiped it away. "Oi don't want ter leave." It is all Ava could say.

Plopping down on the bed, Ava let some more tears run down her face. Why did they have to do this now? Why couldn't the planet have needed them a year ago before she met anyone. Maybe her best bet would be to suck it up and stop being selfish. "Stop bein' selfish." That is exactly what she was doing. Thinking of herself only. Her whole race needed her and her family to return and think about the planet, not her own needs. Pulling herself together, Avalbane let out a sigh and got down to the floor, pulling out a bag to pack. In the back of her closet she saw the bag she packed to hang out with Theo at his mothers. Her lower lip quivered and she just threw some clothes into the bad, zipped it closed and quickly left the room.

The boat ride over went by quickly because Ava spent most of her time trying to talk herself into not crying or thinking about Sidekick Academy. After exiting the boat, Ava looked up to see both of her parents waiting for her at the end of the dock. They smiled at her, glad to see their little girl all right. She was happy to see them, the last time being when they dropped her off at this exact spot. Running to them, they all shared a happy embrace and took some time to just hold each other. Her father took her bag and they headed to the bus stop that would take them down to their rickety old home. Non one spoke on the bus ride, they all had their mind busy with what to do about Ennis.

They arrived home, quickly went inside and set to talking about what they needed to. Avalbane's mom was rather quiet, she didn't know what to do and just let her husband do all the talking. A nod every once in a while was really all she gave to the conversation. Her father looked Ava in the eyes and asked her again what she wanted to do. Sucking up all her true thoughts, like those about her telling them she wasn't leaving and then dropping down to the floor pitching a fit, she looked up at her father and tried to smile. Her lips felt numb and there was no way she could force a smile. "I'll du waaat is needed. Oi'm ready ter go back ter Ennis." She wasn't going to call that planet her home. It might be part of her origins but it wasn't what was truly her home.

Her father seemed to let out a relieved sigh to hear that his daugter was willing to go back with them. They had already made up their minds, they were going to return to their home planet. It was their home after all and they loved the place. Leaving was one of the hardest things they had ever had to do, especially since they never got to say goodbye to anyone. It was almost a welcomed call for them to be called back after the circumstances they left in a long while ago. Luckily their daughter was willing to do what they wanted and head back home. To their beautiful planet, one much better than this one at least. Ever since arriving, they never truly enjoyed their struggling life and majorly super powerless planet. Her father hugged her, "You will be ok. Especially once we get home. Life there is much better than here. Ennis is your home. Your planet. Do not worry dear, life will finally be normal." He hugged her again and then grabbed his wife's hand and headed to a different room, calling out to Ava to pack her bags.

Avalbane just felt like a numb skin sack moving around in life, not really taking in anything it had to offer. Sluggishly she made her way to her room and started packing her room up. Some of her clothes were still at the Academy so she would have to make another trip down there to collect it all. It was amazing how quickly the young girl was able to pack up her stuff without realizing what she was doing. Her parents still had lots to pack up so they told her to head back to the Academy and collect her other things. The boat she had become familiar with, because of all the traveling, was waiting for her at the dock. The cloudy day had turned into a dark night still covered in the same clouds except they weren't as fluffy. It was almost like the sky was copying her mood. The clouds above had become much more flat and shapeless than they appeared before. As she stepped on the boat, a rain drop fell from above and landed on her nose, freezing to her skin rather quickly. It didn't matter though, Ava just pushed past that and let it stay on her nose.

The next thing Avalbane remembered was being in her dorm room again. She was dripping wet from the walk in and the hard rain pouring down outside. As she collected her stuff, she did her best not to pay attention to what she was actually putting away. Lightning struck outside and lit up the room, showing all the tears that had fallen from the young girls face, down to the ground, wetting the floor.

The closet was cleaned out, the bed was almost completely stripped and the only thing left to really do was pick up her bear from the bed. Staring at the bed, Ava decided that maybe it would be better to leave it. Since she couldn't bring herself to say goodbye to those she cared about, she would leave a note and her bear. Pulling up a piece of paper and forgetting about her inability to write or spell, Ava wrote out what she really felt.

Dear Violet,

I assume you will be the first to see this since we share a room. I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye, but you were an awesome roommate. I went back to my planet, something I hope you are able to do if you still want. If you wouldn't mind, please show this note to Theo. I think he is the only one who will really notice my disappearing besides you. Thank you.

Theo, thank you for taking the time to be my friend. I've never actually had one before I met you. I was able to me myself, to be comfortable. I've never felt this happy before and you are the only person I can thank for that. Theo, you are the best, do not ever think you are not good enough for anything. You are meant for great things and I wish I could be here to see you be the awesome hero you deserve to be. I never had the courage to tell you but I think I have feelings for you. Too bad I wasn't able to find out if you felt the same. Promise me you'll always be happy and find someone you can be yourself with. I want to see you happy. Also, please take care of my bear, they mean the world to me and I want you to take care of them.

Avalbane.

That was it, that was all she could do. Mrs. Teddiums would hold the letter and hopefully be easy to spot in this empty side of the room.

Her bags and art supplies covered her tiny frame as Ava made her way out of her room and out of the school. It resembled the first time she arrived, only there wasn't a handsome young man to catch her fall on the way out. The rain contined to fall on her and freeze as she walked, it was almost like her powers were forcing the water to freeze quicker than normal. It was probably the high stress and emotional situation. Coming to the dock, she saw her parents standing under a hangover to prevent their clothes from becoming wet.

Her father took one look at his sad daughter and felt slight regret on forcing her to do this. Although she had agreed, he could tell it wasn't what she truly wanted. He also took notice that her bear was missing. "Avalbane, dear, where is your teddy bear?" He grabbed some of her bags to help ease her load.

Avalbane looked up at her father and spoke weak and softly, "Oi lef 'er. Oi want me mate ter mind me by somethin' an' he 'ill take care av 'er."

It was these simple words that seemed to help her parents realize something. They were forcing their daughter to leave her home, like they had theirs. They hated having to leave and never see their friends or families again. Now they were forcing their young daughter to go through the same thing and feel exactly what they hated. Seeing their daughter so heart broken was destroying their heart. How could someone stand to see their child so down? There was only one thing they could do. Well one thing her father felt they could do. "Avalbane. I realize this is not something you want to do. You want to stay." He looked up at the Academy in front of them and then sighed, "If you want to stay, that is ok. I just want you to understand they we do not want to force you to do something that you do not want to. We love you and we want you to be happy. However, I do want you to realize that me and your mother still need to go. Are you ok with use leaving while you stay here? We can stay in touch on the holidays like we always do. What do you say kiddo?" He put his hand on her head and ruffled her hair.

Avalbane's eyes automatically lit up at the idea that he was pushing out to her. Of course it was hard for her parents to leave their daughter, but it was something each of them needed to do. "Aye! Aye!" It was all that came up.Dropping her bags, Ava gripped her father and hugged him, so happy to be able to stay at her home. Her true home.

Her mother stepped up and got down to her knees, hugging her daughter and kissing her cheek. She placed her hand on Avalbane's chest and smiled at her, "This will help you. In a couple of days you will feel the power but until then, it won't seem like much has happened." Her hand started to glow and so did the area of Ava's skin that was above her heart. She could feel a chill going over her whole body and her skin felt like it was burning. The process that just took place was a tradition of power transfers that took place on Ennis when the children where old enough to be adults. Usually the age of 17. The process was not complete with just this, there was also a transfer of power from the Pharaoh that needed to take place. "If we are going to leave you here, you need to be prepared. Lets put your stuff back in your room and then come with us to Ennis for a little while, we will finish the tradition there and you will be back before anyone notices. We can do this during the summer, it isn't too far away."

Avalbane was completely fine with all of this. Her chest burnt slightly and there was a dark blue hand print that was left on her skin. With the power of the Pharaoh, the hand mark would disappear.. She couldn't wait for what was going on and the finishing of the tradition was a fine idea. This would help her with her powers and the idea of controlling them and feeling stronger.

With the help of her parents, Ava was able to put all her clothing and stuff in her dorm room. It was all her stuff this time since her parents would no longer have the house. She also took this time to take the note she wrote and hide it. Although this day was filled with a lot of craziness, it was an emotional roller coaster she could deal with. When her parents sold the house, they would head back to Ennis and take Avalbane with them, finishing what was started.
