THIS IS A PRIVATE ROLEPLAY BETWEEN
Arthur Kensington (Pendragon) and Avalbane McCarthy (Winter Frost).

where :: a Science classroom
when :: after class, early afternoon
PostPosted: Thu Feb 23, 2012 1:20 pm

Arthur tapped his fingers against the cool tabletop in the science classroom, waiting, debating on taking out his notebook to practice. Well, this was just great. He sighed to himself, trying to think of something that would make this experience go a little faster.

While Arthur could do well at science-- a lot of his classes before coming to the Academy had been focused on reading without actually having to do anything-- he had a sinking feeling that he would be at something of a loss here. He and his partner would need to create something physical and then explain to a group of people how it worked and why.

Arthur grimaced. He'd much rather prepare a talk about something or write an in-depth essay explaining the principles of the thing. Actually having to make something and get it to work sounded like a lot of effort for something whose final outcome he would know long before he finished working on it.

So it was with not all that much enthusiasm that Arthur picked at the hem of his plaid purple and black shirt and readjusted this solid red, fringed scarf around his neck. At least he'd look good today. There was that.

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • was pushing her books into her cute bear backpack when class had ended. This would be her first real assignment here at the school. Hopefully it wouldn't be too bad. The idea of a science experiment or something was kind of scary. What exactly was considered a science experiment? Although she had lived on this planet for some odd years, certain things still did not make sense to her. Especially since she was kept home most the time. It would have helped had her parents wanted to her to go out and explore a little or learn things, that would have been nice. But oh well.

The class had cleared out and the only two people left was her and a boy with a plaid shirt. Luckily for her they had to raise their hands during class to figure out who their partner was. She couldn't recall his name from that time, but at least she knew that was him. He didn't seem too bad. Plus his shirt and scarf were really cute. Avalbane herself wore a plaid jacket and striped scarf.

Clutching her science book to her chest, she headed in the direction of the other being. Upon getting close to him, she was going to reach out and tap his right shoulder. That was until she remembered how cold her hands were. It was bad enough being within five feet of her made the air cold, but her hands and feet were a whole other story. Pulling her hand back to herself, she gripped her book tighter. "E-Excuse me. Oi tink yer..um..me p-project partner." It was the only thing she could think to say to him. Hopefully he could understand her through her stuttering and thick accent.

Adverting her eyes from him, since she felt rather nervous, she would glance up periodically. Every time she looked down, she remembered that she had a metal leg and no shoes. Hopefully her odd looks wouldn't put him off too much.
PostPosted: Sat Feb 25, 2012 1:28 pm

Arthur drew his scarf a little bit tighter. Weird, all of a sudden it had gotten really cold in here. He looked up to see a girl with a metal leg making her way towards him. Arthur simply nodded. He was from Upper Sewit, sure, but he wasn't all that unused to seeing Sewitian fashion, especially with body modification. He nodded, evaluating this girl who claimed to be his partner.

At least she had good taste in clothes. While Arthur hadn't been prepared to go to such extremes for a look (yet), he respected those that did. Obviously, if everyone did he would have to withdraw his support because the thought of liking something mainstream bothered him. But right now, he'd say that the girl's attire put her in a good place for his favor. It wasn't so cool that they were both wearing plaid and scarves, that made one of them look like a copycat (and since Arthur didn't have the advantage of the metal leg, it would probably be seen to be him) but he supposed that he couldn't fault her for that. They didn't know that they were going to be partners when they made their fashion decisions this morning, after all.

"Looks like it." He sighed drearily, the fact that the girl was nervous missing him by a mile. It was pretty cold in here, though-- that girl's teeth were even chattering! Arthur sighed. You'd think that a superhero school could afford decent heating, but maybe not. He rolled up his sleeves, not going for a workman look, but more wanting to prevent them from getting dirtied.

"So have you ever made a volcano like this before?" He raised an eyebrow in question. Not like he had either, but he wasn't about to admit that. He had read extensively on it, though.

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • was a little worried with his reply. He didn't sound too happy. Had she managed to make him upset already? Should she apologize? Or maybe...maybe it was something else? Well, she would wait and find out. It would be rather odd for her to apologize for nothing if he wasn't mad at her. Instead, she just watched him roll up his sleeves. Since she wasn't sure, she figured that it would now be ok for her to sit down next to him. Gently sitting her science book down at the corner of the table, she pulled the closest chair out and sat down in it. Hopefully he wouldn't mind.

When he asked her if she had made a volcano like this before, she turned her head to the side a little bit. Her eyes wondered to the side as she thought about the question. Well, she didn't know what a volcano was until this class. She had made paper mache things before, but it wasn't that exactly. She also had never made anything that was suppose to erupt or anything. "Well.." She started off now directing her attention towards him. "Ah've never made a volcano, but oi 'av made paper mache things. Oi tink dat counts. M-maybe." She started off confident in her thoughts but at the end she was doubting if that counted or not. At least she had an idea of how to go about it. "'av yer?" She was just curious. If he had, Avalbane would happily follow his direction in what to do.

Which did make her realize, she hadn't introduced herself. Yeah they were in the same class and knew each other because of that, but wasn't it proper and nice to introduce yourself. "Ah, umm, oi'm avalbane. if yer didn't already nu. not dat yer didn't. it wus mainly jist in case. oi mean yer proobably already knew dat, it isn't loike yer are dense or anythin'." She got scared as she went and kept on rambling. She finally managed to shut her mouth after letting out a squeak of terror. Quickly her eyes diverted down to the table so she wouldn't have to see his reaction.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:22 am

Arthur shrugged, as though the issue of him having not done something was silly. The girl's answer seemed satisfactory enough, though. "It doesn't matter. Papier mache should be sufficient." He made the last word sound like something bad, like "sufficient" was his language for "barely passible." It was done completely unconsciously; in truth, Arthur was more interested in getting this project over as quickly as possible rather than catering to the feelings of others. He had piles of books to read, and he'd even worn some of his favorite clothes so that he could look fashionable when he went out.

When Avalbane introduced herself, Arthur realized that he was being impolite. After all, in today's society where casualness trumped formality in so many regards, being formal was very underground. Maybe this girl knew what was up. He inclined his head in a slight bow (very hip; who bowed anymore, anyway?) as he started getting out a mixing bowl and a pile of newspapers for the papier mache mix. "Arthur Kensington. And no, I'm not dense." He twisted the last word with an extra emphasis and a roll of his eyes. "Though I understand if it might be difficult for some people not to see that."

His teachers at previous schools had thought that, he frowned. He'd been top of the class in literature, history, and social studies, but the sciences were where he faltered. Honestly, he didn't understand them. It hardly made sense that something written down in a book shouldn't always be true in real life. What kind of subject was that?

On top of that, volcanoes were so...overdone. Every science fair did one, and it pained Arthur to think that he would be the lame kid with the mainstream project. His mood must have shown on his face: he was not pleased.

"Fine, let's get this trainwreck moving, Avalbane." He sighed. "It seems most efficient to have one person cutting and then the other person making the volcano so they can have a consistent supply." It also seemed like a great way for Arthur not to get his hands dirty. Paper was something he was good at handling. But still, Avalbane was a girl and as such the Sewitan politeness that his parents has installed in him made him grant her the first choice. "Which do you want to do?"

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • did not realize he had avoided her question about if he had done anything or not. How he had said the last word made her feel slightly bad though. It might be sufficient, but obviously it wasn't good enough. Arthur obviously had wanted a partner with more qualifications then what Avalbane had. Too bad she couldn't change that. She would. Oh she would. All she wanted to do was be able to get along with him and do what he wanted. She couldn't help that she was a doormat, plus it didn't really matter. She was fine with the way she was. A bit self conscious about her speaking abilities, but still fine.

She was happy to know his name. At least he wasn't annoyed at her or anything when he said it. And the bow, that was new. What did it mean exactly? Was it some new way of introducing oneself? Or did he want her to look at his hair or something. There had to be a reason behind the bow, or not. She didn't know. This would be the first time Avalbane had actually seen someone bow. However, she did turn slightly red when he said the word dense. Oh no. She felt bad now. "Aw naw. yer don't luk dense at al'. oi jist, oi don't nu. yer luk really smart wi' yisser glassies." It as true. His glasses did add to a mental aroma of intelligence wafting from his body. Maybe it was best if Avalbane just kept her mouth shut most the time. It shouldn't be too hard.

The look on Arthur's face told it all. He hated her. She could just feel it radiating off of him. If only she had not of called him stupid. It was an accident, but oh well. Now their project was a train wreck and he was unhappy. She nodded her head and started to look around the room. They would need some more supplies then what was in front of them. Hearing his voice again, she turned to him and took a moment to think. Maybe he wouldn't mind if she made the volcano. It was really what she wanted to do. He did ask her, offering her to take whichever she wanted. Be brave Ava! "Oi wouldn't mind makin' it if yer wouldn't mind cuttin'? aye?" He didn't really seem like he would mind that.

Since they would need the other supplies, Ava went ahead and headed for the supply closet in the back. Their teacher had left it unlocked for them to get some extra newspaper or some supplies. Gripping the door handle, she slowly pulled the heavy door open and looked inside. Peering around all the extra science books and folders, Avalbane was able to spot what she was looking for. There was some wire in the back. This would allow for them to create a base for the paper mache to be built on. She didn't see any paint, but that was fine, because she could get some from her backpack. She always carried some with her. Just in case.

Avalbane headed back to the table with the roll of wire. Hopefully the scissors would be able to cut through it pretty easily. Unrolling some of the wire, Ava went to creating a basic shape for the experiment with the help of a picture from the science book.

Arthur quirked an eyebrow as the girl hastily corrected herself and said that she didn't think that he was dense. Well, that was good. Arthur liked it when people appreciated his intelligence, though his glasses weren't necessarily meant to augment that fact. He shrugged, wondering offhandedly why someone as well-dressed as Avalbane was hadn't picked up on it yet.

"It's more meant to be ironic than to look smart." He shrugged. He could understand how she'd maybe gotten them mixed up-- it might have been the result of getting too much into his fashion. "It's also because I can't see very well." Arthur shrugged. He rarely commented on his deficiencies, but this one was different. Glasses implied a distance and that was something that Arthur liked, wanted, craved sometimes.

He set himself to the task of cutting paper, pleased the the girl wasn't forcing him to do the dirty work of this project. Paper was really what Arthur had the most affinity for out of this entire exhibit anyway, and he was happy to work with it. Feeling somewhat guilty that he hadn't yet commented on the girl's appearance after this show of kindness, he attempted to start conversation.

"Science isn't exactly what I'd call my favorite field of study, but it has its purposes. I think the idea of science as a driving force in culture isn't what I'd call wholly repugnant, but it lacks something." Arthur shrugged, as though letting the thought fall while neat strips of paper fell from his hands as he took scissors to them. "Anyway, here's a few strips to get started. I have the recipe for the paste," here he handed a memo sheet to Avalbane written in impeccable cursive, "if you want to start that."

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • looked up at Arthur when he said he couldn't see very well. Was it similar to hers? The sun did hurt her eyes. Well it hurt her eyes because her eyes glow in the dark and are meant to see at night but here, here the sun was bright. Her eyes were really sensitive to the light. If he had a hard time seeing and wore glasses, did that mean she needed them as well? She thought about asking, seeing if he would know the answer but just a moment ago she had rambled herself into a sticky situation and didn't want that to happen again. Keeping quiet. That was what she said she would do. At least until she really needed to speak. Although Avalbane did realize it would make sitting here doing this project rather boring if no one was talking. Gah! Why did it have to be so hard to decide on what to do. Maybe just nodding and gestures would work as talking. At least that would break the silence or something.

Instead of actually doing any of that, she just stayed quiet and bent the wires into hoops of different sizes. They would be attacked by long straight pieces of wire that would wrap around them and then go up some and then wrap around another. It wasn't too hard, and the base would be done in a matter of a few minutes.

When Arthur started talking, she looked up at him but continued to work on her base. When he finished, she just stared at him. Waat? It was really all she could say. What was he talking about? What did the word repugnant mean? Avalbane knew she was right about him being smart but....whoa. This was....this was way past her level of English. "Re....repudge....nent..." She tried repeating the word. It was more of a mumble to herself but she wasn't really thinking about if he could hear her or not. "Y-yeah, Oi agree...o-oi tink.. Oi loike art!" Did she agree? Well it sounded like something to agree with. Avalbane wasn't sure if she just radiated stupidity or if the things she says gives it away. Either way she probably just sounded stupid.

Looking down at the recipe when it was passed to her she stared at it. What language was it written in? She couldn't read or write English, but this wasn't that. The curves and loops and flow of everything, it was different. It killed her to admit it, but she couldn't read it. Now he was really going to think she was lame and stupid and hate doing this project even more. "Oi canny read dis. waaat language is it in?" That last part was more out of curiosity for herself. It had to be another language. It was very pretty though.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 03, 2012 12:55 pm

Arthur watched as Avalbane bent the paper mache parts together into the general shape of the volcano. He was actually pretty pleased. He didn't mind science all that much, it was really just that he didn't like to get his clothes dirty and unfortunately science tended to call for a lot of that.

He pursed his lips, thinking. Didn't being a superhero also call for a lot of that, too?

Grappling with this uncomfortable thought, he was a little taken aback by Avalbane's response. He cocked his head to its side when he realized that she was sounding out the word. It didn't bother him overmuch; he was already predisposed to like the girl based on the way that she dressed, anyway, so he figured that he might have just said it weird, like maybe some of his accent from Upper Sewit had worn off on it. Arthur didn't think he spoke with an accent, but figured that that would be the first thing that an accented speaker would think.

"Sorry," he apologized hastily, rarely. He hated misspeaking. "I guess I talk a little too fast. But yes, art has a lot of important contributions to today's society that I don't feel are appreciated under the weight of science." He stewed about this injustice for a while and then realized that she was asking him about his writing.

Arthur blinked, stunned. Now this was something that he hadn't expected. "B-but that's English." He didn't stutter. No, not him. This was not him looking uncool in front of someone. "It's just written in cursive."

Was his handwriting really that bad? Arthur hadn't had his composition tutor look at his writing for a while, but still...his writing couldn't have become so bad that it was illegible after coming to the island. Could it?

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • still wasn't quite sure what he was talking about when he mentioned injustices and science. Since obviously he was talking above her intellect level, she just left it alone. There was no way the boy was doing this on purpose. Maybe he didn't realize how....unintelligent the girl was. I mean, she obviously couldn't hold a long conversation with him. That much was evident by how she wouldn't say much back to him. Well that and he made her nervous. Everyone made her nervous though, so it wasn't that big of a deal. What did art and science have to do with each other anyway? Well, besides this volcano they were making. It involved art. Maybe that is what Arthur as talking about. How art and science coincide and are needed to fulfill each other. That sounded like a good thing. Obviously this had to be what he was talking about. Society must not really realize how they are needed together!

She felt pretty proud of herself for being able to figure that out. But instead of actually saying anything, she had just nodded to his comment. It had taken some time to figure out what it meant anyway.

Avalbane was still eyeing the paper when Arthur started to speak again. His stutter made her look up at him. This is English? She wondered how that could be English when it didn't even remotely look like it. I mean, maybe the a or some other letters were very similar but there was no way.

Cursive? That was something she had never even heard of. "Waaat is cursive? is it a made up language?" It had to be right? I mean, look at all the swirls and loops and these crazy letters that resembled no other in the English alphabet. At least, she didn't think they did. " Ah've never seen anythin' loike dis before. B-but oi still canny read it. wud yer....w-wud yer mind readin' it ter me?" Obviously Avalbane felt awkward and very slow in front of him. Asking this, well that just made it worse. She felt bad for asking that. "Yer don't 'av ter t-though! Oi...oi can figure it oyt if yer are too b-busy. Oi don't want ter 'assle yer too much." She had to say this. She would feel terrible, absolutely terrible if he was busy and she was annoying him with asking for help.

Besides, cursive couldn't be too hard to figure out on her own, right?
PostPosted: Tue Apr 24, 2012 1:30 pm

Arthur felt his face burn. He was sure that Avalbane was an variant of hipster, and while usually it was considered very cool to know more than the other person, he had the distinct feeling that she had a kind of quiet intelligence that she chose not to flaunt as much as he did. Realizing this when she commented on his writing, Arthur felt really dumb for not picking up on this sooner and only a little anxious to prove himself again as a fellow hipster.

He could have kicked himself-- of course she wouldn't have known what cursive was, it wasn't her area of expertise. It didn't fit with her mystique. And of course, the job of the hipster was to mesh fully with their chosen mystique.

He pursed his lips. "It's a style of writing. Maybe you've heard it called script instead?" He cocked his head, his pride still not wanting him to cave too much, but trying not to insult a girl he perceived to be on the same level of coolness as he was. "It's a form of composition other than printing, or block letters. A common compromise between printing and cursive is called italic, which is what happens when some of the letters are separate and some linked together. In cursive, though, everything is connected. You can still see the individual shapes of letters, but some change so that they can connect to the next letter in the word better."

There, he thought. That should be sufficient. Besides, it wasn't like there was anything on that paper that should be too hard to figure out. It was just the concentrations for the baking soda and vinegar, after all, and that was something that he was sure that Avalbane, with her practicality, was bound to get right anyway. So, he moved back to cutting the newspaper instead.

"So, where are you from?" With most hipsters, it would be considered an insult not to be able to pinpoint them, but Arthur hadn't really heard anyone like Avalbane before. So he opted for the straight-forward approach, figuring that she would take better to that anyway.

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • looked over the list again. Script huh? Well obviously this was still something she hadn’t heard of. Script....hmmm.. The word did seem familiar, however she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. His explanation hadn’t really helped much, but she figured that would happen. Being unable to read English anyway was what made this worse. Staring at the paper as Arthur talked, she figured it was only two things, there were numbers in front of them, like with recipes her mother used when cooking, and the rest she could try and make letters out of and match them with the letters on the cans in front of her. Luckily they had all been in a little kit together when she pulled them out of the supply closet. Those teachers and their helpfulness. She stared down the paper and slowly was able to match it up with the can to the left of her. Grabbing it, she measured out the noted amount, dropping it into the small plastic dish in front of her. This was her mixing area and would be the perfect size to slide papers through.

After measuring out both things, she took an old paintbrush and stirred everything together till the powder was dissolved. Already Arthur had a nice stack of paper strips for her, so it would be easy to just jump in and start forming the volcano. Grabbing her first piece of paper delicately, she placed it into the mixture and used the paintbrush to submerge it. Letting it get a nice coat, she gently grabbed an end of the strip and pulled it from the dish. Running her free hand’s fingers down it, she pushed most the extra off and back into the dish. Now it was time to start placing them on the wire mold. However, she wasn’t sure if she should do the inside as well or just worry about the outside. It had been several years since her mother showed her how to do this, obviously it didn’t stick very well. Oh well, she would start on the outside and if Arthur said anything, she could easily do the inside afterwards. Placing her first strip was no problem. The whole mold was open and ready to be covered. Avalbane laid the strip down and did the best she could to smooth it out. Tada! There was the beginning of something beautiful!

She turned to look at him when he asked her where she was from. Hmm, what did he mean? Technically there could be two answers for this. Or three. What did most normal people answer to a question like this? Was it her home planet Ennis? The cold, dark world she barely remembered. She wasn’t sure how many aliens were actually on this planet, would it be odd for her to be from another world? Her roommate was an alien, but maybe because it was this school it was ok. Who knows. Or did Arthur mean where she grew up? In Lower Ronth, in the slums. Leaving on the street, then a tiny little house, the place where she lost her leg. The third and final option was where her room was. Maybe he meant where was she from in the building. That option, however, didn’t seem like the right one. It was probably best to just ask instead of assuming. Things never went well when she assumed. “Du yer mean wha oi wus born or wha oi gru up?” Either way she would probably mention the other in her answer. Avalbane just didn’t want to clog his ears with things he didn’t ask about.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:22 am

He watched complacently as Avalbane put the newspaper strips down on the volcano base and was glad that she was doing it instead of him. It wasn't that Arthur doubted himself, but the gooey papier mache just reinforced his feelings that he would not have enjoyed that task. Still, he couldn't deny that despite trying to be in control he felt like he was just mooching off of his partner's hard work. Making conversation, he thought, might be a good way to contribute, if nothing else.

"Both, either." Arthur shrugged. "It's a more interesting story if those two places are different, right? I was born and grew up in Upper Sewit, so it's a pretty open and closed thing. You sound like you have an interesting story. I've never heard anyone else with an accent like yours, after all."

Arthur hoped he wasn't being too pushy, but when it came to stories that intrigued him, either in books or in people (the latter being much rarer, as Arthur tended not to prefer to talk to other people more than he had to) he wanted to know everything.

Avalbane McCarthy

xxxxxxxxxxxAvalbane • Was placing more strips down, the same way as the ones before. When Arthur spoke, she was right on assuming he was going to say both. Honestly she should have just answered him but that was how she was, she had to make sure. While overlying the strips she took a minute to think. Her hands were super gooey from the paste so she didn't want to set them on the table. Instead she held them over the dish. "Well, oi wus born on another planet actually. Most people du not nu dis cause me...race oi guess, luk juist loike 'umans. Oi mean, we are 'umanoid an' everythin'. Anyway, it wus a planet called Ennis. 'tis loike a giant snowball. De whole place is covered in snow an' ice. Oi don't nu much aboyt it cos we moved whaen oi wus a wee wun. Most de people on Ennis 'av sum type av powers dat dayle wi' de cowl. Oi got mine from me mom. Dohs dat are born withoyt powers tend ter die since they canny 'andle de temperatures." She took a moment to ring some of the paste from her hands and into the dish and then looked up at Aruthur. "We moved 'ere, ter dis planet cos av an accident. Me parents an' oi were able ter blend in well. We started aff livin' on de streets av Ronth. We didn't really 'av a home but sum boxes kept us sheltered from de wind at noight. Me parents got jobs an' stuff an' we moved ter a nice wee apartment in lower Ronth, 'til another accident. We still live in Ronth, jist a wee house nigh." She looked back at the stack of papers and grabbed one to continue placing them on the volcano.

As she started the process again, she had hoped that wasn't too much information. Did she speak too much? Hopefully not. She didn't want to throw her whole life story at him, but most people didn't even know Ennis existed. If her life story wasn't too boring maybe he would ask more questions and she wouldn't talk as much next time. Yeah, that was it. She wouldn't talk as much next time.

The strips were really starting to form a nice shape around the wire volcano base. This was going to be awesome. yes there was only a small part of it done, like the bottom third of one side, but they were progressing along at a nice pace. At this speed they could probably finish the outside and let it dry within a couple of hours. Actually, Avalbane had no idea how long it was going to take. Hopefully Arthur didn't have anything else he was suppose to do today.
