I see this is a fun extra feature of Gaia used as a gold sink, rather than something that should be managed. The only people who might use this are those already married, or the younger ones who think it might be fun. But for most of the Gaian population it'll probably just be something they'll never use. That said, I can see some of these people requesting 'relationship' statuses in the future, but other than a status symbol I don't see Gaia ever rewarding you over a fancy achievement.

There is a link under the "My Gaia" tab labeled "Marriage." You have to propose to someone (or be proposed to) and have the other person accept it. There' also a small gold fee involved.
