• Why I Write...

Socrates once said, “One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing.” At the core of man, there is an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and I am no exception. Most men want answers to the oldest questions. “What is man’s purpose? Does God exists? What is right, evolution or creationism?” While these certainly pique my curiosity, they are not the questions I stay up until three in the morning thinking about. No, my questions are a lot more
introspective. “Who am I? Who is Stone?” These questions haunt me, because honestly, I don’t have an answer, besides, “I am me.” There is one thing that I do know. I love to write. I think I can say, that the reason I write, is simply because of my childhood. Born to two young parents, I am an only child. While my parents did play with me, it wasn’t the same as having a sibling. So, as an only child, a person develops their imagination. And do I have one. I can literally close my eyes right now, and I am a knight in armor, sitting on top of my horse. All my men are behind me and the king’s treacherous brother and his army are on the other side. I close my visor for protection from sword and bright sun and lead the charge. When I open them, I’m back in a room with other guys writing about why they write, although I’m sure there’s a few who are just making up reasons. I close my eyes this time, and now I am in feudal Japan. There are hundreds of the Shogun’s samurai facing me down, a warrior with no armor, but with my soul and courage. My katana, Kage no Mu, glints as the sun waves goodbye. The samurai charge with their war cry of, “Death to the traitor!” I tighten my grip around the hilt and get ready to strike back. I open my eyes and breathe deeply. I write because I want people to see the things I see, to be able to relate on a totally different scale. It is my life and I love to write. Writing opens the many gateways in my mind, each one leading to a different side of me. It is the only way for me to be who I am. Writing is my identity, it’s what separates all the other people with my intrests. My stories is what makes me Stone Matthew Medina.
