Kayla's Journal
This is an account of Kayla's experiences at The Barton Academy of Gaiamancy.
To whom it may concern. I am writing this from the bottom of a large pit in the middle of the wilderness. There does not seem to be any way of crawling out as far as I can see. The sides are too steep and too lose to get a grip on. Fortunately, I’m not down here alone. My classmate, Eric, is here with me. I was hoping this class camping trip would provide a chance for me to be with him, but this isn’t what I had in mind.

It all began while Mr. Arnet was leading our group through the forest, pointing out examples of what we had studied in Biometrics class. We came upon a stream full of fish. It was Eric who asked to go back to the campsite to get his fishing kit. Mr. Arnet didn’t want to let him go by himself, so I quickly volunteered to go with him. I was so exicited when he said OK. Finally, I would get the chance to talk with Eric alone.

We reached the site without incident, but on the way back we heard a noise from within the bushes. Suddenly, it came out onto the path in front of us, a big brown bear. We stopped in our tracks, not wanting to alarm it. Eric thought it would be a good idea to go around it through the forest, and I agreed. It seemed fine at first. The bear was just standing around sniffing the trees. Then, without warning, the bear started coming after us, as if quite angry. We just ran in the opposite direction.

We hadn’t run far when we realized we had hit a dead end, an area surrounded by steep cliffs. The bear was still coming. I don’t know how he had the presence of mind to do it, but Eric quickly pulled out his phasing sigil. I’m not sure what he’d planned to do. Perhaps he didn’t either. But whatever it was, it made the ground shake. Looking back, it was quite impressive for a first year student. The only problem was that the shaking caused a cave-in right below us, and down we went. I don’t know what became of the bear.

We’ve been here for almost half an hour, and it’s getting dark out. I had to break out one of the glow sticks that Dottie gave me in order to make this entry. By now, everyone’s looking for us, but what are the chances they’ll find us here?
