Aveline asked that Varric, Sebastian, and I help her plan a patrol route along the Wounded Coast. As we were scouting out the roads, we heard shouting along the cliffs. The guard captain thought she recognized one of the voices, that of a woman known as Lieutenant Harley who had just been promoted and was out on her first routine assignment. This was clearly anything but routine. Learning that there were several guards pinned behind a boulder, we carefully made our way toward them while avoiding being shot by any oncoming arrows.
Taunts were viciously traded between the guards and a group of raiders known as Evets Marauders who had Harley’s troupe pinned. They were glad to see that Aveline had come along and brought help but was hoping for more reinforcements. When I asked why they simply did not retreat from the cliffs, Harley gave me the most disapproving glare. She explained to me how the marauders were robbers and rapists, who had a mage who practiced blood magic, and had time and time again thwarted capture. This time, she refused to let them get away again. Unfortunately, many of those under her command were too shaken up to simply charge in without reinforcements. With Aveline by my side, we rallied the guards together. Inspiring them to follow our lead as my companions spread out along the cliffs to help disarm the various traps that had been set to slow our charge.
I would say that there were not any casualties, but that would be a lie. Only two or three of the guards had died during the battle, and while Varric fell, he was not so far gone that he could not be revived. Harley told us to report to Lieutenant Jalen for the posted reward. However, when we reported in, Jalen asked if the leader Evets was actually there. In truth, the blood mage Fell Orden had been leading the raiders then and Evets was nowhere to be seen. Jalen suspected that Evets would seek revenge for what we had done, but he was not the first nor the last to attempt to take my life for bringing justice to the land.
