Kayla's Journal
This is an account of Kayla's experiences at The Barton Academy of Gaiamancy.
It's been a week since I arrived here, and I've done my best to get settled in. Attending the Barton Academy of Gaiamancy has been a dream of mine since I was a child, but now I wonder if this was really the best of ideas. My best friend, Hannah from back home, said she has every confidence in me. It was her idea that I should start this journal to keep things in perspective. Well, here it goes.

My name is Kayla. I'm sixteen years old, and I come from a land called Penn's Woods. The subject of Gaiamancy, or the manipulation of natural and biological energies, has always facinated me. Most of what I already know I learned from my dad. His family has always had a hand in the art, but it is my goal to become a professional Gaiamancer. My mom is a retired schoolteacher and worries about my chosen profession. She, however, is very supportive.

I am the oldest of three children. I have a thriteen-year-old sister who enjoys writing, and a younger brother who, even at the age of three, seems to share my interest in Gaiamancy. I've already mentioned my friend Hannah. We have known each other for years.

And so, after considerable effort, I have left my home for the first time to pursue my studies at the Academy. Yesterday, I met with my guidence counselor, Mrs. Soulsby. She is a very kind lady, and very helpful too. She helped me sign up for classes, which started today.

Today...Today didn't go so well. For some reason my alarm didn't go off this morning, so I was fifteen minutes late for my first class. That was terribly embarassing having everyone stare at me as I came in. To make it worse, the instructor, Mr. Horitt, decided to make an example of me to discourage tardiness. "If you ever hope to have the slightest chance of passing my course," he said "you will make a point of being on time." After that he proceded to make fun of my last name, Galela, which happens to rhyme with my first name. I can see "Mr. Horrid" and I are not going to get along very well, which will make Elemenary Field Manipulation a very difficult course for me. I hope the rest of the week isn't like this.
