Weaknesses: Background: Personality: Simon is an incredibly geeky little nerd. He loves genetics, finds it fascinating, and like most geeks, can barely carry a conversation without this love somehow popping into it. Unfortunately, Simon was made acutely aware by his first forays into the shop that not everyone shares this love of his, and some of the feien haven't even ever bothered to read the information on the boards about genetics. He found that very confusing, as Em, Corvus, and Djerod (as he addresses Kancho) were always very interested in hearing about such things, and it only cemented a feeling he had already been having: that he was different from the world, and not necessarily in a good way.
ssssssssThis perception stems from the fact that Simon is an incredibly sensitive person. He worries about how others see him and places too much credence in what they say. If someone says math sucks, he takes it as a personal blow. He gets extremely nervous around new people in particular, worrying what they'll think of him, and invariably this causes him to give a bad impression as he starts blurting and stammering.
ssssssssOne of Simon's more obvious problems is that he's so focused on genetics he has trouble seeing anything else. He spends a lot of his time refining his procedures, speculating on unknown genes, and re-evaluating his data. He's very intelligent and wants to learn about other things, but genetics first. Because of this, early on, he excused himself from a lot of conversations about things outside science and genetics: things like TV, computer games, books, and music, which make up the bulk of daily conversations, particularly when dealing with Em. Simon cut himself out of a large part of Em's life. Now he sees himself as very much an outsider from her little circle of people (namely, Em, Corvus, and Kancho), and given his experiences in the shop where his passions weren't shared, he feels very much an outsider there as well. Em, for her part, is content to let Simon do as he pleases, quite oblivious to the fact he feels such an outsider.
ssssssssOf course, the fact he has double curved horns, a mutation which has so far been unique only to him, doesn't help his perceived outsider status any. Simon's desperate attempts to find someone similar to him have thus far been unsuccessful, because everyone's unique. Maybe, just maybe, he's starting to learn that might not be such a bad thing.
ssssssssHe's very smart, but he's got a lot to learn. Thankfully, he has three people intent on teaching him: Corvus, Kancho, and Em. Simon's very loyal to them, as they were the first three people he met. Outside of them, it's hard to earn his loyalty, but once you have it, its yours for good. (The main reason it's hard to get it in the first place is his perceived outsider status.) So far, the only person to truly gain his trust has been Yasha.
ssssssssSimon excels at math and science and other logical subjects. He has difficulty with creativity, the arts, writing, and most music. About the only music he finds listenable is Classical. Simon has a strong tendency to take a position and stick to it. He's that scientist who tirelessly works on proving the theorem everyone else has given up on. Only after he's taken a definitive stance does he have the confidence to ignore what other people say to him. That's a very important feeling to Simon. Thus, his insistence on "this is the way the world works" is very hard to break and is actually necessary to his peace of mind.
ssssssssOver his six months of life Simon has learned a great deal. He first learned how to ground and center himself from his friend Yasha. She also taught him not to listen or depend on others so much. For this reason, Simon chose to go on a pilgrimage by himself across the continent, to prove that he was capable of living without relying on Em, Corvus, or Yasha. He found that while he feels no particular bond to any particular place, as long as he is comfortable with himself he can be happy. When he finally came back home and learned Yasha had moved away, he was a bit upset to have lost his nearest and dearest friend, but believes that so long as he maintains his center of being Yasha will never be far away. Of course, maintaining that center without her is much harder, and he does dearly wish she would come back.
ssssssssSimon was first attracted to Careli's side by the fact she was as out of place as he had been (and still is, depending on the situation). She has that same nervousness around new people (admittedly not as bad as his own) and has recently been thrown into a completely new world. Finally Simon recognized a person he could really identify with. Before meeting her, all of his relationships had been ones of admiration. Being admired by somebody else is a real eye-opener for him. Even as Careli learns and adjusts socially in ways Simon cannot, he will doubtless remain a loyal friend.
Some things Simon gets from Em: desire to give to others, extreme nervousness around people he admires, super-conscious of mistakes both actual and perceived, love of solitude, worry about what is actually real, some Latin, Rhea (which he knows, but only unconsciously, unlike Corvus, Em, and Kancho who speak it consciously), some Spanish, some Japanese
