Name Meaning: Sanskrit (India) for Earth

Eyes: Dark green
Hair: Black
Marital Status: Single
Bending Skills: Her bending potential is above average, but she lacks in both patience and much formal training. It doesn't help that her father has forbade her from bending since her brother left.
Nation: Earth Nation
Location: Ba-Sing-Se

Personality: Spunky, cheerful, and a little snarky
Background: Avani is trying her hardest to take care of her father and younger sister, but at twelve years of age this is a difficult task. When she was very young her mother left home and within the past year her teenaged brother ran away to search for her. A poor family to begin with, the loss of her eldest child has been very difficult on this girl's father as he now scrapes by to put food on the table.
Though she tries to be a dutiful daughter, this child has the heart of a fighter and a yearning for a less mundane life.

History
The Journey To Here and Now Prompt "Aren't you a little old to be carrying a stuffed toy like that?" an adult at the market questions. What's your reaction? How did you obtain the stuffed toy to begin with? Is it important to you for some reason, or do you decide it may be time to toss it aside after all?
The hustle and bustle of the street made the older child, Avani, by name, to clutch with an even tighter grasp, both her younger sister, Lei, in one hand and a medium sized two headed red and yellow stuffed animal in the other. These were the times she was most needed by one and needed the other the most.
Behind her, someone yelled, but she ignored the call and pushed forward.
“I’m talking to you, girly!” Avani stopped, grinding her teeth together. To begin with, she hated being called ‘girly,’ especially by someone she didn’t know. She stopped, pulling Lei behind her and holding up the animal, as if she would be able to man a strike against the person with the feeble toy.
“My apologies,” she said softly, without sounding the least bit contrite. “What might I do for you?” she asked.
“I asked, aren't you a little old to be carrying a stuffed toy like that?" The elderly woman peered down her nose at the children in front of her. She recognized them, girls of Xiao Chen. Their mother had left home long ago, what was her name? It didn’t matter, she was no longer there. Poor dears. She clicked her tongue lightly.
“Well?”
Avani shook her head and turned away. “What I carry around and why is my business. As for being too old, perhaps I should carry a basket of flowers? Although, I don’t see much of a point in that.”
”Well, is there any point to the animal?”
In fact, there was. Avani however didn’t feel she had to share it with this woman, this gossip. Especially when it could get back to her father, she couldn’t risk that. She walked forward, continuing to ignore the woman’s yells behind her about being a rude little girl. Avani didn’t care, had little concern for the opinion of the townsfolk.
Lei coughed and Avani looked at her worried. “Lets get the medicine we came for and get you home, hm?” Lei nodded.
Then entered the house after obtaining the small amount of medicine they could afford and Avani tucked her sister into the bed and sat beside her in a rickety wooden chair, the animal in her lap.
“You shouldn’t have dirt and coal in there,” Lei said, frowning disapprovingly. “Papa wouldn’t like it.”
Her dark haired older sister smiled grimly. “I know, dearheart,” she said, stroking Lei’s hair. “But I have to. I need it close to me.” She sighed. “You don’t know what it’s like, to feel the powers of the earth around you and not be able to do anything, even though you are connected.”
”But if Papa finds out…”
”He won’t,” Avani said firmly, clutching the toy animal. “I won’t let him. And even if he did, I’ll find something else to keep it in! He can’t stop me forever!”
Her face shone and her sister met her eyes.
“Papa won’t stop me forever. I will be a bender.”
