Favorite Part of the Story
Yasmeen is a skilled enough young reader to have long since left picture books filled with fairy tales behind, but she still loves the fairy tales, particularly reading them, though she thinks it would be fun to write them someday, too! Her favorite part is the heroes winning against seemingly impossible odds and making it to "happily ever after." As she's read through all of the easily available picture books (and knows them by heart!), though, she's starting to look for other versions, to mix it up, whether it be old collections that include obscure fairy tales, or new twists on popular classics. She usually has her current reading in her backpack or her dance bag.

Visions of Once Upon a Dream
Yasmeen has started to push herself in art, doodling in her notebooks. Seeing something she can only imagine take shape on the page is a very satisfying endeavor for her. What Yasmeen really wants right now is to start learning how to paint with watercolors, to make illustrations of her favorite parts of her favorite stories. In the meantime, getting good at drawing is a top priority as a young artist, and enjoying the joy of including glitter paint in her craft projects.

Dancing on the Stage
Starting a few years ago, Yasmeen started taking pre-ballet, after begging her parents to let her start learning how to dance. She has since graduated to lower levels of ballet, and works very hard, moving to the music, trying to get the poses and movements down. Favorite ballets to watch or listen to are any of the fairy tale ballets, especially Tchaikovsky. She gets Khaz to do her makeup for recitals, and she's dreaming of the day he'll get to do something for her when she gets a bigger part.

I Choose to Hope
Yasmeen is an optimistic, hopeful person, looking toward that happily ever after, choosing to believe in it, too. Given how not nice her daddy's older brothers have been to her and her brother and their mommy, and how her daddy's almost never home, this can sometimes be a hard thing. And Yasmeen's starting to come across enough fairy tales without happy endings to know that happy endings aren't always in the cards. But for her, she hangs onto that hope and belief. That her daddy will break away from his mean big brothers, and come home to stay with them. That they can be a family again, and that Khaz will feel safe enough to be himself around the people he loves.

Kind Heart
Yasmeen likes doing nice things for other people, making them feel better when they're feeling down. The smile and the laughter she gets mean a lot to her. After all, if she can't get her happily ever after yet, maybe she can help someone else get closer to theirs! Even if it does sometimes tug at her heartstrings a little to remember afterwards that her own is still so far away, Yasmeen hangs onto that feeling, because it's still A happily ever after she's helping to realize!

Flaws:

Hidden Heart
As optimistic and hopeful as Yasmeen is, as strong as she can seem in the face of doubt, she's still very much aware that things aren't always cotton candy and unicorns and true love's kiss. Despite her fears and doubts, she presents a brave face to the world...which means her family and friends can't always tell when she needs a good cry and a hug to help release the pent-up emotions. This is very much a case of Yasmeen feeling like the thing her family needs most is their happy-go-lucky little princess to not break, so she endeavors to always be that person she thinks they need. It's exhausting to always present herself to the world this way, and, when the emotions get too big, they can sometimes explode in a way that's very difficult to control.

Slow to Ask for Help
Yasmeen has trouble asking for help. Having a father who's rarely been around, a mother trying to pursue all of her dreams with more restrictions from her in-laws than any meaningful support, and a brother who hasn't exactly been the best example of how to ask for help, Yasmeen has been growing up trying not to ask for help, even when she really needs it. Whether it's homework, someone to play music while she practices dancing, someone to do her hair and makeup for recitals, she's generally struggled with asking for help, believing that, as part of the family needing her to be their idealized princess, she needs to be able to stand without support. Keesh had to offer to play piano for Yasmeen when she was struggling to keep the timing right in ballet, and Khaz had to volunteer to do her makeup when their mother was running late for her recital. Swimming lessons by Khaz and Keesh very nearly took them offering to teach her for her to finally ask her brother and cousin who are on the swim teams of their respective high schools to get help. Being slow to ask for help has caused her to make mistakes on things, and sometimes big mistakes, stressing her out more than if she'd asked for help sooner.

Eyes: Large, golden

Hair: Long, black, with curling bangs; usually worn partially up in a pair of high, thick, tightly corkscrewing pigtails almost right behind her head, falling to her butt, with a couple shorter (but still thick and tightly corkscrewing) locks falling just below her bust (the child is already headed straight for Rapunzel hair)

Face: Round, but trending heart-shaped, with a delicate nose and a rosebud mouth, her features are best described as "doll-like"

Family

Mother
Thuraya (36) is Yasmeen's mother, the primary parent present in the household on a daily basis, and a loving mother to her children and the family cat. She loves her husband dearly, too, but is aware that his anxieties about not getting looked down on by his elder brothers pushes him to not be the best father to their children. Since he's not the best dad he can be, she endeavors to be the best mom she can be, keeping a weather eye out for her children's needs, doing her best to support them. Unlike her husband, Thuraya was born and raised in the US, the elder of two daughters (no brothers), and tends to be more liberal-minded. While the Khalid family is noticeably more...traditional...as Muslim families go, her husband knows full well the woman he married was getting her degree in library studies and education, and was only putting any permutation of her career on hold for him. They worked out a compromise between his family's expectations and her desires to stay active and be able to have enough resources to care for their children if something happened to his income, where it's fine for her to be a part-time librarian and substitute teacher at the elementary school, it just has to stay part-time, and she has to dress modestly. Sharing a love of books has meant that, if Khaz and Keesh can't watch her for the afternoon, Yasmeen is more than happy to spend the afternoon quietly in the library, waiting for her mother to finish her shift, reading and doing her homework while she waits. Getting recommendations from her mother is something Yasmeen particularly prizes

Big Brother
Khazran (Khaz) is Yasmeen's 16-year-old older brother, and the best big brother she could ask for: kind, smart, helpful, responsible, and happy to spend time with her when he's not busy. She's not fully aware of his gender identity or sexual preferences, but she'd support them if she was; at this point, she's mostly aware that Khaz isn't like most boys his age, and he's trying very hard to hide some parts of this to avoid being negatively judged by the world around him, which makes her incredibly sad, that the world doesn't seem to want to give a caring, good-hearted person like Khaz a happily ever after. If Yasmeen figures out how to help him achieve his happiness, it's something she's going to actively pursue.

Father
Faruq (38 ) is Khaz and Yasmeen's mostly absentee father, as business keeps him away from home most of the time. Unlike Thuraya, Faruq grew up in Lebanon, to a somewhat conservative family, as the youngest of three sons, and often overlooked, unless they wanted him to do something that would make his older brothers look good. He met Thuraya while studying abroad for university, fell in love, and married her, despite the objections of his family. Not wanting to subject his wife and any children to undue pressures from his side of the family, he chose to join his older brothers in the family business, but buy a house for himself and his wife in her hometown. Unfortunately, quite possibly out of a bit of entitlement and bitterness at the actions of their baby brother, they keep Faruq pretty busy on business trips out of town, and have been a bit judgmental of Thuraya and the children. Sure, he heads the branch office for their business in Destiny City, but their tendency to send him far afield has been hard on everyone. Faruq loves his children and wife very dearly, but familial stress has sometimes caused him to appear cold, distant, and strict with his children, something he deeply regrets. He also tries to bring them home nice things every time he can make it home, from stuffed animals to cultural knickknacks to the family cat. Thuraya understands why he's doing what he's doing, but there's only so much that she's been able to do so far to soften the effects of his absences on their children and their marriage. Despite his side of the family being devout Sunni Muslims, he's found it difficult to act as expected, and has grown more religiously tolerant than expected, something that might surprise his children to know, as Thuraya has not been raising a pair of super devout Muslim children, and Faruq's brothers have made no bones about their own levels of devotion.

Cat
Neith, the family cat, is an Arabian Mau, black, with striking peridot-green eyes. She was brought home a couple years ago as a kitten, a gift from Faruq to the children. A quiet presence in the Khalid family home, she's pretty sensitive to Khaz and Yasmeen, and always seems to be there when they need her most. They love her very, very much, and she seems to return the affection. A lot of her toys have been made by Thuraya, with Yasmeen helping out where she can, and Yasmeen plays with Neith a lot, so she has some sense of what Neith likes the most.

Aunt
Shams Lyons (38 ) is Thuraya's older sister, and a professional pianist, specializing in jazz. She loves cats, spicy food, her husband (Tyriq Jamar Lyons), her daughter (Keisha Lyons), her sister, her niece and nephew, and cats. Very family-oriented, but very earthy and kind. Shams loves helping Yasmeen out with her dance practice, playing piano to help Yasmeen keep the time. She can't really give Yasmeen a lot of guidance, since this is ballet, and Shams is more of a jazz pianist, but it's still a fun way to bond with her niece, so long as Yasmeen agrees to help with a bit of yard work, mostly watering plants in Shams' sunroom, or other lighter tasks to accommodate for Yasmeen being younger than Khaz, who's also asked to do some yard work in exchange for homemade tea and sympathy.

Uncle
Tyriq Jamar Lyons (40) is Shams' husband, and a kindly, hardworking figure who runs a stained glass shop in town, who met Shams while she was at an event in New Orleans, his hometown. With help, he made Shams a sunroom in which to keep her more delicate plants in the winter, and play her piano in a sunny spot all year long. He absolutely adores his wife and daughter, loves his wife's piano, loves jazz and cooking (especially jambalaya), and is just as happy to let his sister-in-law and her kids hang out, though, in many regards, he's pretty busy with his work. Knowing how Shams and Keisha feel about cats, he brought home a pair of Van kittens around the same time Faruq brought home Neith. Because of how busy he is, while he's been more present for Shams and Keisha than Faruq has been for Thuraya and the kids, he hasn't bonded as much with Thuraya and her kids, though he tries to set a place for them for a big family dinner once a week. When Faruq is home, he sets a place for Faruq, too, and is sometimes the shoulder Faruq cries into when he feels crushed between his desires to be a good husband and father, and the deep-seated anxieties his family has instilled in him. Tyriq is probably the most vocal in gently reminding his niece and nephew to give Faruq a chance to try to be a better parent.

Cousin
Keisha Lyons (16) is Yasmeen's shy and quiet older cousin, fellow cat aficionado, lover of swimming and crafting, too, albeit preferring mosaics. The Lyons can't afford a pool the same way the Khalids can, but Keisha's always welcome at the Khalids to swim with her cousins, and this opportunity has allowed her to make the swim team at her own high school. She's also big on cooking and piano. While not as emotionally close to Yasmeen as she is to Khaz, since Yasmeen's school is closer to Keesh's, Keesh usually picks Yasmeen up from school before they go meet up with Khaz. Sometimes, if Shams isn't available to help Yasmeen with her dance practice, Keesh will step in instead. It's not that Keesh doesn't want to help her adorable younger cousin, it's that Keesh is still working on nailing the speed she plays at, which she knows could throw Yasmeen off, and that's the last thing that Keesh wants to do to Yasmeen. Yasmeen doesn't mind, she loves the quiet joy Keesh seems to instill in every note she plays, different from Shams' more...mature...style, which is still fun, smooth as anything, easy to move to, but Keesh's music hits differently, and Yasmeen loves how both of them play equally. Keesh swears that, one of these summers, she's going to get her aunt and uncle to drain the pool so she can go in with Tyriq and retile the pool in fancy mosaics.
