After selecting a ribbon, participants can then proceed beyond the ruined gatehouse and into a swath of green land abutting the bailey walls, which runs down into a semi-open forest where the canopy is patched with green and autumn colors. Stocky, powerful creatures can be seen moving among the trees, navigating with ease despite the impressive horns they sport on their foreheads, which ought to hinder their movements in the branches.

The Joyeuse Garde is standing on a little platform on the grass - which is just as well, as she is so short that she could not be seen from very far away otherwise - and awaiting the favor selection process to be completed, at which point she will greet all her participants. She is a queenly little figure, fit to preside over this sort of event, and the impression is emphasized both by a snow-white falcon which perches on her outstretched arm and by the mail-clad knight who stands behind her as if at attention, his arms folded behind his back: the ghost of the Wonder, who watches her intently as she speaks.

“Welcome to the Joyous Guard,” she says, with a hint of a Kentuckian drawl which is certainly a little out of place. “I am so thrilled that you have joined us for the tournament. I have only two rules for you: be good to one another in all things while you’re here, and also, have fun. Joyous is right in the name, and we mean to live up to it.”

With this little announcement, she beams, gesturing with her free hand at the woods behind her. “The creatures you see in the forest are called Accolades. They’re not tame - it would be a mistake to treat them as if they are tame - but they love a tournament even more than we do, and have congregated to make themselves useful to you. You do not need a rope or a bridle to catch an Accolade: you only need your wits, or perhaps your kindness. An Accolade will seek out a worthy rider. When you have captured one, you may lead it - it will follow you - to the lists, where the first game will take place.”

gaia_crown 𝕮𝖆𝖕𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 𝖆𝖓 𝕬𝖈𝖈𝖔𝖑𝖆𝖉𝖊
Remember the results of your roll - you will need it for the next game.

Accolades are about the size of a modern riding horse, but with a sturdier build. They are covered in naturally-grown armor, and from their forehead they grow an enormous lance, which they will aim according to their rider’s guidance. The lances do not have nerves, and they are shed and regrow regularly. The Accolade has a shock-absorbing skull, similar to a woodpecker’s, which makes blows to the lance painless even when it breaks. They are naturally primed to tilt at one another and enjoy the competition! Accolades are not tame and have varying dispositions, but they are excited to participate in the joust and will allow themselves to be caught by the right person.

Optionally, you may decide what your Accolade looks like and include it in your post by using this Picrew!

Roll 1d10 to determine your outcome:
Quote:

1: You have very nearly winded yourself pursuing particularly wily ponies, but you at least succeed in getting an Accolade to follow you. It’s a little winded itself, however. Take -1 to your jousting roll.
2: You chase your Accolade towards a stretch of green turf near the bailey wall, but it veers wide, and you realize it was not turf at all, but algae. You have fallen into the moat. You do catch your Accolade, but it doesn’t seem thrilled with the idea that you’re going to have to ride it in wet clothes. Take -1 to your jousting roll, unless you can sneak off to dry off somewhere private before proceeding.
3-5: You catch your Accolade not with any ease, but also without an excess of trouble. It seems a little aloof from you, but willing to let you lead it.
6-7: You catch your Accolade with relative ease, and it seems friendly towards you.
8-9: You capture an Accolade easily. It is fresh, unwinded, and strong, and seems inclined to respect and obey you. Receive +1 on your jousting roll.
10: You seem to have an almost spiritual connection to a particular Accolade, which walks right up to you and claims you as a favored rider. Receive +1 on your jousting roll and also a pony friend for the duration of the games, if you want it. Also, you will never be intentionally bucked or thrown from your Accolade, unless you OOC choose to be.

After you catch your Accolade, you may choose to outfit its horn with a banner from among a pile available for the purpose. This does nothing beyond make you Look Cool.

Your next roll, which ICly takes place within a couple of hours, will be done either solo or against an opponent. Please feel free to seek out an opponent for it!

[6-7: You catch your Accolade with relative ease, and it seems friendly towards you.]

After a bit they all, every one there, eventually made their way to the other side of the crumbling building Botein assumed was a type of gatehouse and into a wide open grassy area. There in the distance was a forest, one of those thinner forests where you could see through the trees somewhat and what Botein saw had her practically bouncing on her feet. Even the tip of her braid vibrated as she practically strained to get closer while not actually moving. Afterall there was no reason to scamper across the grass and scare the creatures in the distance.

There in the tree's shadows were stocky four legged creatures, trailing tails and flowing manes, horses... but with horns. Unicorns! There were unicorns there! The petite woman was seeing a dream come true right in front of her eyes. She was already mentally preparing the plea, the begging, she would give to the knight they were a guest of to just pet the graceful creatures in the distance. While she still bounced on her heels she also took several deep breaths, trying to calm down since being overly eager or hyper would just work against her. Both in convincing the knight in charge and spooking the unicorns.

Botein was so lost in her own thoughts that it took her a bit to realize that someone had started to talk. Sapphire eyes took in the knight standing on the small little platform in the grass, noting the snow-white bird on their gloved arm and the ghostly figure behind them. That must be the knight that was the protector of the wonder they were currently at. The knight that Botein would have to cajole into letting her cuddle the magnificent animals in the distance... and maybe a scritch or two of the falcon.

"Accolades," Botein murmured quietly. They weren't unicorns they were Accolades and they were apparently a part of a challenge everyone there was allowed to participate in. She listened intently when told that they were not tame but no rope or bridle was needed to catch one. She just needed to be smart about it. After a few minutes observing, squishing her need to take off running, Botein grinned up at Sarin before informing him that she would be back, and started down the grassy hillside, pausing every so often to pick handfuls of grass.

That was her plan, bribery. Feeding the Accolades the sweet grass, and maybe even climbing some trees for tasty leaves, Botein was hoping to ingratiate herself with one of the large creatures. She wasn’t really looking to ride them, not that she would turn that down, but she definitely wanted to pet one.

To Botein’s surprise it didn’t take long for a beautifully colored Accolade with four white socks to take an interest in her, and her treats. Pleasantly surprised she took the next several minutes to properly feed the Accolade before she hesitantly tried to run a gentle hand along the powerful neck. “You're so gorgeous, a sweet and beautiful Accolade,” Botein crooned as she softly ran her fingers through the magical creature’s fur. She was in love!

She understood why some girls were referred to as 'horse girls' that was for sure.

Tempesti looked at the purple and gold favor in her hand, unsure what exactly to do with it. Despite what fleeting crushes she’d had in her life, she didn’t have anybody she’d exactly consider a “fair one” in any romantic sense of the phrase. Her relationship with Bacchus was entirely like the sort that existed between siblings, something she could tell had carried over from one life to the other. She liked that idea. Friendship transcending time and death. It was comforting, even if thinking about it was more than a little bit surreal. Isolated as Elysia had been, maybe there were others out there who shared memories with her. Maybe she’d be able to find memories of her own to share with them.

For now though it seemed that she would be her own champion and she carefully attached the trinket to her belt, positioning it just over her hip. As though summoned by the act, an explosive puff of glitter and a cacophonous squawk announced the arrival of a mischievous mass of feathers. It seemed as though the appeal of a tournament had been enough to lure Hildegard from wherever it was she went when she wasn’t pecking at shiny objects with Tempesti. Looking pleased with herself, the strange little being flapped onto the senshi’s shoulder as she walked toward the area where the accolades trotted about the forest.

Her breath caught in her chest at the sight of them, the awe she felt accompanied by a flurry of excited chattering from the bird on her shoulder as she surveyed the unusual animals. To call them horses wouldn’t do them justice, despite the fact that they were technically on Earth, these creatures wove their way through the forest with a distinctly otherworldly air. Beautiful as the more common horses were, their elegance could not quite compare to the raw power and magic of the accolades.

Several minutes passed as she watched them, somewhat anxious about the notion of attempting to “capture” one. The horns on their foreheads were of concern of course, but even if they were willing participants she would feel a bit bad having to chase one down. Then of course came the nagging fear that they would find something about her repellent, or otherwise want nothing to do with her or her participation in Joy’s tournament. Lingering out of range could only do so much though, and Tempesti forced herself forward toward where they roamed.

To her surprise, her arrival seemed to almost immediately catch the attention of an accolade somewhat deeper in the forest. Its white coat contrasted with the brown of the hard substance that covered its head and rump, golden eyes blazing as it cantered toward her before lowering its head in what seemed like a friendly gesture. A cautious but hopeful hand reached out toward the accolade’s neck, briefly resting on its smooth coat before gently stroking the animal. Reciprocating the affection, the creature nuzzled her arm softly. It seemed as though her fears of rejection had been unfounded, the accolade eagerly leading her toward a pile of colorful fabric. After a few moments hemming and hawing she held up a golden banner for its scrutiny, meeting with apparent approval as it lowered its head to allow her to affix it to the long, purple-striped horn. Pleased that she’d made a new friend, she decided to take the time before the jousts to get to know it better.

Satisfied that he had done his part to meet the standards of this place’s hospitality, up to this point anyway, and pleased to see that the young knight was no worse for wear from his collision with the Tempestine construct, Bacchus wandered over to where Joyeuse Garde had introduced the accolades. Though what he was what the humans referred to as “fashionably late” it didn’t seem as though he had missed his own opportunity to take part in these games. Spotting Sailor Tempesti seated across the green with a new companion of her own, he trotted over with a grin.

“I like your friend!” He looked the accolade up and down as he spoke. Centuries on a world that had long since consumed most of its own animals had left him a bit unused to them. Just a bit. Enough that the sight of them still filled him with an almost childlike excitement that they may or may not find overwhelming, depending upon the animal and the day. Tempesti’s white and brown ally seemed to return his scrutiny, its curious golden gaze roaming the Tuath’s form before snorting softly and returning its attention to the other senshi. Not to be ignored, Hildegard strutted out from behind the redhead, clucking demandingly at him until he dropped laughingly to the grass to show her some affection.

“I think she missed you.”

“Can you blame her? My company is incomparable after all.”

Tempesti laughed softly and without malice at her friend’s posturing. “In fact, I think she should be my fair one. It’s only right that someone fight for her honor, hm?” Pulling out his favor, he examined the chicken-thing in a vain attempt to find someplace to attach it.

“I’ve got some yarn in my subspace, I’ve been knitting on breaks during my patrols since it’s started getting cold again.” A ball of purple yarn and her multitool materialized in her hands and she quickly passed it to Bacchus. “Your fair one should be able to wear your favor, after all.” A small smile played across her lips as her friend snipped a length of yarn, quickly creating a makeshift necklace for the surprisingly cooperative cosmic companion before returning her things.
“Now that I have that out of the way, I need to go and find a steed of my own. Wish me luck!”

Without waiting for a response, Bacchus dashed off toward the forest. A living forest. Probably hardly any horribly mutilated corpses at all. A group of accolades scattered as he approached. A man of greater self-awareness might recognize that they were not so much spooked as disinterested in engaging with him. But he was supposed to chase them, right? Right!

Eyes landing on a particularly sturdy looking reddish brown accolade, Bacchus hurried toward it, mentally attempting to plot out the potential routes through which it might run from him. He probably wasn’t faster than it, he could accept that, but if he could figure out how to head it off that would be better than trying to chase it. Seeing his intent the accolade trotted off, outpacing the senshi as it navigated its forest home with practiced ease. Though it was clearly not interested in making this easy for him, its speed didn’t give him the impression that it was putting all of its effort into losing him either. When it rounded a corner he saw what he hoped was a chance and leapt forward, landing in front of the beast with a sense of slightly winded victory. It wasn’t enthusiastic about the notion of teaming up with him, but at the very least it was willing to give him a chance.

“C’mon, let’s go find you a banner.”

Karaka of Aye-ayes

(( 6-7: You catch your Accolade with relative ease, and it seems friendly towards you. ))

So one needed to choose an Accolade in order to joust. Karaka gave her sandals a look before she kicked them off. The grass was soft enough that it wouldn't be too much of a pain to walk over. The creatures that Joyeuse had called Accolades looked and acted like horses and if there was one thing that Karaka knew about while she was her civilian self was how to act around nervous horses. Her tread was soft as she spotted an Accolade that looked promising and she first made sure that the animal could see her. Moving to within several feet of the creature Karaka stretched out her hand ... just hoping that the animal could sense that she had no ill will towards it. Upon the Accolade turning towards her Karaka stilled her movement before she began talking to the unknown creature. In a sense it looked like a typical unicorn. The horn was straight purple and the flowers that were strewn amongst the creature's flank seemed to match. Her gaze swung back to the table with the flags before going back to study the animal's coloration. Silver dappled and a tail that seemed to match had Karaka smiling softly. The animal looked exactly like one of the horses back on Earth. Clucking softly Karaka took a step forward before lowering her voice.

"I know you and I don't know each other very well but I would be honoured if you would allow me to lead you over to the field in order to joust. I also hope that you will not make me chase you. You are of a lovely color and I really wish to ride you."

Karaka focused for a moment on her breathing, calming her heart rate, before she moved a step closer before gently resting her hand on the creature's flank. Green eyes turned to stare her down and Karaka's own green eyes stared back before she gently moved to reach up to gently stroke the neck before the animal heaved out a giant sigh. It had not run and in her mind, that was an important step. It meant that hopefully the creature trusted her enough to allow her to ride it.

"I do not know if this means that I can ride you now but I hope that is what your reaction means. I need to grab my sandals before I mount you but I believe that we have a few minutes to ourselves to get better acquainted."

Reaching up, Karaka's fingers twined in the vine that seemed to be around the neck, mimicking reins before she ruffled the little portion of mane that she could see. "I have no idea if it is proper or not to bestow a name upon you for our short partnership either but I would like to call you Moonlight. It is more for my own comfort as I don't like thinking of you as simply a creature, animal or accolade. You deserve a name and Moonlight suits you."

Karaka released the small bit of vine-like reins and moved back to collect her shoes before she heard the sound of movement behind her and she sighed with contentment. It seemed as if Moonlight wished to follow her, of her own free will.

Maus did not know if he had ever been around horses before, but for an entire assortment of reasons it felt implausible that he had.

Chief among the reasons at present was the fact that he had absolutely no idea what he ought to be doing even by instinct, although possibly that would be true of everyone else here as well, given that these were not, exactly, actual horses.

Still, horses were one of those animals that were supposed to be able to detect if you were, like, pure of heart and all that bullshit, and he certainly had no ill intentions and was definitely keen on Winning the Big Race or whatever it was, on the optimistic hope that there might be a cash prize. Whether he was generally pure of heart in the sense of a horse girl movie protagonist was a question on decidedly shakier ground, but he had foreseen this, and prepared accordingly as much as the very short window of available time had allowed.

So he more or less waited until he spotted one that seemed particularly docile - maybe not spirited enough to compete with any particular athleticism, but tranquil enough to be approached without incurring humiliation - and definitely charmed it all on his own and not because he had, realizing what the day might possibly hold, pocketed a couple of baby carrots off a veggie tray for the purposes of bribery, which proved effective.

Still, it was a bit of a surprise how willingly the creature followed him, once it had done chomping up its payment. He gave it a cautious and somewhat skeptical pat on what of its forehead was not occupied by bark and lance as he led it - or allowed himself to think that he led it - to the lists.

Looking at the little rodent ******** make catching one of the jousticorns look easy, Grieve frowned. She did not want to share food with some strange a** horse thing. Also, she wasn't going to try the same thing just to look worse just because animals were good at telling which people were actually dangerous.

Frowning even further and looking to all and sundry ready to rip one of the mounts apart with her hands and teeth, Grieve reached out and...

...made a heart shape with her hands.

She'd seen Kiyoshi do the same to silently summon Cersei to him as some kind of animal taming trick. Anyway, if it didn't work, probably nobody would notice she was actual-

A wicked long horn slowly poked through the hand heart, stopping just before Grieve's chest.

With the banner, or favor, handed over to Antisana and everyone moving through to a new area, Feronia found himself looking around curiously as creatures grazed in a field. They weren't like anything he had seen back home. For one, they were much larger than anything on Feronia, but they didn't seem scary, at least.

Keeping back and off a bit to the side as some of the others worked on approaching the creatures, called Accolades, he looked over them as his ears twitched slightly, both from nerves and his curiosity. When he managed to get close enough to see one, he moved even slower so as not to spook them. If they were so big, it wouldn't be a good idea to scare them; otherwise, he might get hurt.

One looked up and then, after eying him for a moment, wandered over and stood in front of the small senshi.

"O-oh, hello there," he said quietly before offering a hand out to pat them lightly. When the accolade didn't run off or step on his feet, he smiled and went along admiring them.

Sailor Liriope of Growth
6-7: You catch your Accolade with relative ease, and it seems friendly towards you.

Liriope definitely didn't think of herself as lazy, but she did think it was just slightly easier to put something off and/or not try as hard if it was something she was doing for herself. Having decided that she was going to give her honor (or something like that, she wasn't familiar with Earthan fantasies) to Solaris meant that Liriope absolutely could not slack off! She had to do her best! And show that she could work hard too (despite having very little in the way of evidence toward such a thing, in the way Solaris had).

They barely knew each other, having only spoken for a few minutes. But Liriope felt this utterly bizarre sense of longing for something she wasn't sure she'd ever wanted from anyone. If someone like Solaris could be proud of her even for a moment, even just for a silly game... It might make coming here without Tarra more palatable.

Wandering toward the edge of the trees was also a bit more palatable than a castle, and definitely far better than the noisy, stinking Destiny City. She used to enjoy the forests! With many a grand and fun activity for all to share. Her interest in them had wanted marginally over the... many years, but in her heart of hearts there still remained a soft spot for beautiful trees dappled in warm colors. And it was safe here (she had to keep reminding herself- it was safe here).

But...

Well, old habits and all.

When several heavy forms started shifting behind the trees, something she couldn't identify, Liriope immediately found herself alert- standing stock stiff and startled, as if she was little more than prey, herself (ridiculous; she had never been prey).

The people around her- though she she didn't know them, either- did not seem near as paralyzed, and were bold enough to slip between the trees, approach and chase the horse-like creatures. Because it wasn't something treacherous in the forest (it was safe here), but just part of the game. That she was desperately trying to play well so as to try and prove- something- to Solaris. So Liriope was not going to stand here rooted to the spot. She was a hunter, and frankly, had her own way of dealing with animals.

She had to force herself to take steps, slow and steady, reminding herself that everyone around her was fine and it was just a game and there was no lurking Chaos in these trees. It wasn't Liriope. It wasn't her world.

Her fingers worked as she moved, tugging at the clasps of her collar to pull it away from her neck, showing the blotchy growth of soft green moss over her shoulders. Not to brag or anything, but she was very tasty- allegedly. She hadn't gotten to try and bribe the creatures on her world, and she didn't dare try on Earth where anyone could see her. So this was... a test run, of sorts. With creatures larger than she would've liked to experiment with in any other situation.

The accolade that locked eyes with her first was a dusty sort of color, speckled in green like she was, and whipping its long tail back and forth.

For a single, hanging moment, Liriope thought it was looking at her with such intensity because she had invaded its space, but with a particularly aggressive-sounding snort, it approached where she had (once again) been frozen. And she couldn't emphasize enough how it definitely sounded like it was considering taking a chomp out of her while she just stood there uncertainly. But in the end it gave her a curious sniff, seeming almost perturbed that this human-looking creature smelled like snack.

The accolade tossed its head with a huff, maybe annoyed, maybe disappointed, maybe just tsundere acceptance, before it cantered around her in a circle, and when she didn't respond, it snapped its tail against her, as if demanding she move.

Liriope had the distinct impression that this accolade thought its options were slim, but she would do. And it wasn't like Liriope was going to say otherwise.

(Rolling for Aquitania, Green Chapel, and Aberdonia, will fill in later!)

User Image
Aquitania: 8 (8-9: You capture an Accolade easily. It is fresh, unwinded, and strong, and seems inclined to respect and obey you. Receive +1 on your jousting roll.)
Aquitania stared at the large creatures. So. Beautiful. And regal, too! The "Accolades", as they were called, were the size of ordinary horses, and, while most were roughly the color of ordinary horses, not all of them were, and some seemed to have patterns that didn't quite belong to regular horses. More fascinating was the natural woody armor, sometimes with flowers, sometimes with thorns, and gigantic horns all of them bore, like lances from their foreheads. They bore reins of vines, and some of them had leonine tails, like old-fashioned unicorns.

Sure, she probably wouldn't be able to get onto one without help, but she had no intention of letting that stop her. Worst came to worst, she could find a fence post or a table or something to get on so she could mount.

Looking around, the chibi ventured into the field, wondering how exactly one even caught one of these magnificent creatures. Most of them drifted away, a few easily charmed by others, others leading people a merry chase. Sure, as a chibi, she was fast enough to keep up with an older senshi, but could she keep up with an Accolade?

Aquitania looked around, and spotted a slightly shorter dappled bay, golden-eyed, with splashy stockings on opposite legs paired with shorter socks, sporting thorny armor and soft pink roses, with a lance-horn striped in red and gold, watching her intently. Snorting, it pranced around her as she walked toward it, long, silky feathers on its feet flashing, but it didn't run away as she approached.

Reaching up, she caught at the reins, and it stilled, pawing at the earth once or twice before bowing its head carefully around her. Grinning, the chibi rubbed its nose, and led it away toward where banners could be gotten to attach to an Accolade's horn. First event, cleared! She just hoped the jousting went well.

Actually, given how it seemed to prance as it pleasantly followed her, showing little sign of tiring, she had no qualms about whatever happened next. It would still involve a fun little gallop on an Accolade, and, even if Accolades weren't really horses, this still constituted her first time on horseback that wasn't a pony ride at a fair!

User Image
Green Chapel: 3 (3-5: You catch your Accolade not with any ease, but also without an excess of trouble. It seems a little aloof from you, but willing to let you lead it.)
Green Chapel hovered a bit longer on the edge of the field than some did. Accolades. A knightly creature for a very courtly Wonder. Like her cousins, her experience on horseback was rather limited to pony rides at fairs when she was small. Had animals like these existed in the forest around the Chapel? Probably not. The Chapel seemed to be a place of wilderness and sacrifice and complex games of honor and hunting. Not very likely to be the sort of place for chivalric creatures. Far more likely to be home to monsters and eldritch creatures. Something to ask Sylvain about later, when she told him all about the tournament at the Garde.

In the meantime, she needed to catch herself an Accolade. How exactly did one do that? Were they like cats, insisting on not being pressured into a relationship?

It was worth a shot.

The page made her way toward the center, watching and waiting to see if any were curious enough to come check her out. Unfortunately, Accolades clearly were not like cats, but she did have the attention of one, a dappled green, with a black horse tail, mossy armor covered in thorns, green eyes, and tiny yellow flowers. It regarded her with an expression of "what the ever-loving heck do you think you're going to accomplish doing that," before striding away from her, making no serious attempt to escape, but also forcing her to follow it.

As she hurried after it, which it seemed to want, given how often it kept looking back at her, the Accolade never sped up from a steady walk. When she caught its vine reins, it stopped, sighed a little, and then quietly followed her to retrieve a green-and-yellow pennant to affix to its horn.

Hers seemed less eager than the ones her cousins had caught, but, to be fair they were both more gregarious people who had just walked up to their Accolades, pursuing them with determination. Hers probably wanted her to put in more effort, and be less hesitant. Which was fair, given how sociable their Wonder's current mistress seemed to be, but maybe that was also part of the characteristics of the creatures who populated the lands around the Garde, perhaps they were naturally feisty creatures who enjoyed romance, adventure, and competing for honor. In which case, Green Chapel promised herself, she'd have to do very well to make her poor Accolade feel like it hadn't wasted her time.

User Image
Aberdonia: 8 (8-9: You capture an Accolade easily. It is fresh, unwinded, and strong, and seems inclined to respect and obey you. Receive +1 on your jousting roll.)
Aberdonia approached the field with a bit more trepidation. As far as he'd ever gotten in riding equids of any kind was pony rides when he was small at fairs and festivals, or carousel ponies, and he hadn't ridden either since he was a kid. Which was a shame in the latter case, really, carousel horses were beautiful, it'd be fun to do some makeup inspired by carousels, but gender normalcy could suck an awful lot of popsicle sometimes.

And the Accolades, beautiful as they were in their own wild way, looked far more intimidating than a kiddie ride could ever be.

No. He'd promised himself he'd do this for Aquitania, help his baby sister out, win her some honor and glory. And for that, he needed to start by catching an Accolade.

Stepping out, he looked for a likely choice. One that was swift and steady, ideally one he could get his legs around in his layers of kilt without exposing himself.

He found a lean golden one with darker gold zebra striping, a long leonine tail, four white feet, green eyes that matched his sash, and sported tiny white flowers dancing a bit out of the way of other people. It kept glancing his way, which...well, it was worth a shot. Jogging over toward it, he was relieved to notice that it trotted to an easier spot to catch, tossing its armored head and flicking its long tail. The super senshi caught its vine reins fairly easily, and rubbed its soft pink nose. It whickered at him before quietly following him toward where banners were collected for people to attach to the horns.

Now he just had to have a good, clean round with the dummy, for Aquitania. It wouldn't do to lose her points, if that was possible, or to embarrass the noble creature that followed him and politely lowered its horn for a green-and-gold pennant to be affixed to its lance-like horn.

It was like it grew out of the forest itself. Blarney had been wandering through the copse of trees, eyes and ears perked and attentive as he went. He didn't want to be so quiet he was mistaken for a predator, but he didn't want all of the horses - Accolades, Joy had called them - to intentionally run from him or give him a wide berth, either. It was a careful line to walk, and finally, all that intention paid off.

The reason Blarney hadn't seen it sooner was that it appeared to have developed near-perfect camouflage. The greens of its body and even its two little mis-matched sock feet blended with the shadows of the trees and the patches of light perfectly. If not for the golden stripes of its horn, Blarney probably would've walked right past it.

"Hey there," Blarney said, keeping his voice low and soft as he stopped walking, all attention fixed on the Accolade, which had paused its absent chewing of grass to stare back at him. "I'm Blarney." He had no idea if these things could understand him or not (what if they could speak themselves? It wouldn't be the weirdest thing he'd ever come across, but he also felt like Joy would've mentioned it if they could...unless she wanted to see all their faces the first time it happened, which was not a no-chance theory) but he figured it was better to be polite than rude to a magical creature, especially one that had a horn growing out of its head that looked perfect for jousting (or for making Blarney-kabobs).

The two stared at each other for a long minute. Blarney broke the frozen silence first, by taking a step and reaching his hand out to the creature.

This would prove to be something of a mistake.

Quick as a flash, the Accolade took off running, deeper into the woods. It didn't even occur to Blarney for a second that he could let it run and simply choose a different Accolade - he felt sure to his bones that this one was the one he was supposed to ride. So, he took off after it, all pretense of stealth abandoned as he crashed through the trees and bushes, using every ounce of his newfound Squire strength to keep the thing in his sights.

"You can't run forever!" Blarney called after it, hoping it was true. The thing nickered in response and Blarney let out a little huff of indignation - so it could understand him.

Or it couldn't and he was applying a level of sentient pettiness to an animal that it really didn't deserve.

Maybe.

Blarney put on a burst of speed, got within ten feet, lunged, slid like he was trying to make it in to home base before a catcher tagged him. He was now covered in mud.

Blarney stood up. Put his hands on his hips. Pursed his lips. He tried to brush his clothing clean, gave up, and looked up, fully expecting the creature to be long gone by now.

But it wasn't. It was standing there. Staring at him.

Waiting for him.

It was breathing heavy - almost as heavy as Blarney himself was.

It hit him all at once: they were playing chase. A smile came to his face, in spite of himself, and Blarney refocused. Okay, fine, they could play chase.

And so they did, for what felt like over an hour, but was probably closer to twenty minutes. Blarney ran after the creature, leaping and swerving around logs, trees and bushes. He was starting to get a stitch in his side when, finally, the creature seemed to slow and Blarney forced himself to speed up accordingly, and the combination let Blarney reach out and grab the fluffy end of the creature's tail.

It froze. So did Blarney. They were both panting hard, and the creature turned its head slightly to look at Blarney. Cautiously, Blarney dropped its tail, holding up both hands as he made his way around the creature's side. The creature did not run, but it watched him, warily. Carefully, Blarney extended his hand to the creature, who sniffed it for about thirty seconds, and then nuzzled into Blarney's palm.

Blarney grinned and ran his hand up the creature's cheek, soft beneath his fingers. "You made me work for it, didn'tcha?" Blarney said, around the catch in his breath. "I think I'll name you Effort. Just for today. Is that okay?" The creature gave a little wicker of acceptance, and Blarney smiled again. "Nice to meet you, Effort. Let's get back to the party."

When Madeline was a little girl, she had wanted nothing more than a dapple gray mare. She had named it, in her heart, Raindrop. This fantasy was encouraged by a near-religious devotion to books like My Friend Flicka and the sequel books, Misty of Chincoteague, Black Beauty, and The Black Stallion, and then movies like Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron.

To put it more simply, Madeline McCaffrey was a horse girl, through and through.

There may be some parts of herself that were distinct from Edam. There might be some parts of Edam that were not part of Madeline. However, there was one thing that was made immediately, crystalizingly, perfectly clear, as she stood in the small pasture, staring at the gathered Accolades:

The Venn Diagram of 'horse girl?', for Madeline and Edam, was a circle.

It was, perhaps, the very first point of absolute agreement between the two halves of Madeline's magical and non-magical lives.

Because she couldn't believe it: Raindrop was standing there, waiting in the field. Waiting for her.

Granted, the Raindrop of Madeline's youth didn't have the whole...jousting horn. However, it had, in her deepest secretest fantasies, had a unicorn horn, and this was the closest she would ever come to a real breathing actual living unicorn, so - for the first time, Madeline actually felt grateful for having been Awakened.

Edam held her hand out, eyes locked on Raindrop, who was staring right back at her. Not to be overdramatic or anything, but the rest of the Accolades, and indeed the forest and other ambient noises - they all fell away as Raindrop slowly made her way over to Edam. Edam kept her hand stretched out, and Raindrop bumped her muzzle against her hand, claiming Edam as much as Edam was claiming her.

"Hi, Raindrop," Edam whispered, eyes shining with tears. "I love you."

Raindrop blinked her big beautiful eyes at her, and Edam wrapped her arms around Raindrop's neck, burying her face against her in a hug. Raindrop rested her great head on Edam's shoulder, and Edam could have stayed there forever.

She didn't, because after a few moments Raindrop shifted slightly and Edam just knew that meant she was ready for the hug to be over, so Edam released her immediately.

"I love you," Edam repeated, brushing a strand of her silvery mane to the side. "You are the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in real life." It was true, too. "Will you let me ride you, please? In this tournament thingy?" Raindrop gave a great bob of her head, and Edam beamed, quickly locating the reins, leafy and beautiful, just like the rest of her. "Thank you, Raindrop. Thank you for trusting me. I promise, I won't let you down."

She would do everything in her power to win this tournament if it killed her - because that was what Raindrop deserved.

(Maybe, just maybe, Joy was right: there were some perks to this whole magic thing. Maybe. But she'd never, ever admit it, especially not to her dumb brother, if only because he'd never let her live it down.)

Kua'kua was unsure about this whole 'jousting' business. Her own magical attack was distance-based, which meant she didn't usually need to get all up and in the business, like Grieve's style. That was how she liked it, in so far as she liked any kind of fighting (not very much).

She was not overly convinced that she would be able to ride one of these creatures, let alone command it in battle, but she wasn't fighting for herself, she reminded herself. She was fighting for Grieve, and Grieve wouldn't accept anything less than a full-throated attempt at as much violence as Kua'kua could get away with.

The Accolades were beautiful creatures, if somewhat bizarre to Kua'kua's eyes. They didn't really have many Earthling animals on her own planet, and on top of that, she was pretty sure that these creatures were not normal Earthling animals, what with the wooden bits and the giant horn growing out of their head.

Kua'kua made her way carefully to the center of the gathered creatures, looking at each of them in turn. Some moved away from her; that was fine. Others took an interest in her in response, but didn't move closer to her. That was fine too. Of the ones gathered, there were only two that seemed to want to find out more about her.

One was a deep, russetty-brownish color, with markings like a wild paintbrush had used it as a canvas. He was male, clearly, and bold. He actually snorted at Kua'kua and pawed at the ground, like he was challenging her.

Unfortunately for him, the fire in his eyes frightened Kua'kua, and she retreated slightly. Perhaps that was the Accolade for Grieve, or for someone more aggressive than Kua'kua. She could fight, but she didn't revel in it the way some people did.

No, her attention landed on the other Accolade that approached her - a female Accolade, with strong, wirey muscles and a brightness in her eye that caught Kua'kua's attention and held it. Kua'kua approached her cautiously and held out one hand, forcing herself not to flinch as the great creature ambled closer to her and sniffed at her fingers.

"I don't have a snack for you," Kua'kua said, apologetic. "But if I can, I'll find one for you later." Kua'kua gently brushed her fingers down the creature's neck, smoothing it down, before she curiously moved to the wooden-ish growth along the creature's head and neck, which would, theoretically, protect it during the jousting.

"Do you want to joust?" Kua'kua asked softly. The creature nickered lightly and Kua'kua took that as a 'yes'. "I think we should just try to have fun," Kua'kua said, "but...if we can win, that might be very fun. Right?" Again, the creature nickered, and Kua'kua smiled to herself. "I should give you a name, just for today." She thought a moment, taking in the creature's sleek strength, the sense that once this creature got started, she simply would not stop.

"'Ino'ino," Kua'kua said, enjoying the symmetry between that name and her own. Typhoon, was the nearest word in English, she thought. Something that could start from nowhere and absolutely devastate the unprepared - in this case, the other competitors, hopefully.

'Ino'ino seemed to enjoy the name, if the affectionate bump with her nose was anything to go by, and Kua'kua smiled to herself.

She was the only Kuanian left. This weighed on her, all the time. But in the moment, all she felt was the unfamiliar little flutter of pride: she was probably the only Kuanian who could claim to have led a typhoon on a string.

(3-5: You catch your Accolade not with any ease, but also without an excess of trouble. It seems a little aloof from you, but willing to let you lead it.)

Aruna was no stranger to large animals, growing up on a farm. Horses (and horse-adjacent creatures as the situation was) however, were things she was less familiar with, as opposed to cattle. Still, she figured it couldn't be too different than the animals on the farm, right?

It only took her a bit to make her way towards the creature, eyeing the long lance adorning its head with caution as she looked it over. That would definitely hurt if she got smacked around with it, if it decided to give her any issue. Still, it was truly lovely to look at. Nothing like she had ever seen on Earth, that much was certain.

Moving slowly towards it as to not spook it, she spoke softly, murmuring words of encouragement to the creature. Just when she thought it might be within reach however, it almost seemed to give her a look as if to say "oh no, I'm not that easy" and darted away, stopping and looking back at her when it got a good distance out. Waiting for her to come near it, it watched her almost expectantly. Every time she came near, the creature would dart out and around her, seeming to circle her almost. The two played almost a game, Aruna getting close and the Accolade moving just a few steps away, until Aruna found herself laughing. Stubborn, she thought. Just like one of the horses out on the farm.

Waiting for the Accolade to let her draw close again, Aruna maneuvered around so that if it turned, a tree would block its path and make it re route itself. As the Accolade turned back towards her, her hand caught the almost golden vine hanging from near its head. "Hey, hey, it's alright. We did good." She smiled and gently stroked its nose for a moment before guiding it back with her.

6-7: You catch your Accolade with relative ease, and it seems friendly towards you.

Ekstrom had been keeping her eyes on the crowd and the food levels, not just of what she brought but everything that was available, and hoping that everyone was fed and that the food was enough to go around. Not that it was her responsibility or anything, but for whatever reason that was where her focus decided to settle and she didn't want to think too hard about or fight it. She was busying herself with keeping it organized, and it wasn't until Joy began her announcement to kick off the festivities that she peeled herself away, not wanting to miss out because of some strange sense of duty she'd found for herself what was essentially a party of all places.

"Accolade, she called them," she murmured to herself as she walked into the indicated woods, head on a slow-moving swivel as she took it all in.

She didn't have to walk too far in before she spotted one, and she froze with slightly widened eyes. It was pale, looked to be armored, and sported what looked to her like a massive horn of some kind. It looked up as if having felt her eyes on it across the small clearing and settled its gaze right on hers. She offered it a small, warm smile, made some kind of gesture to let it know she was about to do something so it hopefully wouldn't be surprised and run off, and then summoned a small container from her subspace before making her approach. It didn't budge. It didn't so much as blink, actually, and their eyes stayed locked as she moved closer, until she was just a few feet away.

She opened the container then, and pulled out a carrot stick. "I'd offer you something different," she said softly, wondering if that was the right tone to take with them, "but I'm not sure if cookies or cupcakes or those kinds of treats might upset your stomach. Our horses normally eat things like this, so I figured it'd be safer." Ekstrom felt herself smile, her thoughts wandering to Lulu and to Boo and how she comfortable she was whenever she spoke to them. This didn't feel all that different, though there was the lingering worry of losing sight of this one and having to try again with a different one.

The accolade made a soft, fluttery sort of sound and finally blinked. It still didn't move, though she caught its tail swishing along behind it. Her smile, and confidence, grew somewhat, and she got closer and extended the little snack until it was within reach of the creature. She stopped moving then, and waited.

It was a few seconds of more staring and curious little sounds coming from the accolade. Primarily it was the sniffing sort as it inspected her humble offering of friendship, and after those few seconds it finally, very gently, took it from her hand and started munching.

"Tasty?" she asked, relaxing a little bit and moving just a smidge closer as she pulled out another carrot stick. It took less time inspecting this second one before taking it from her again, an almost satisfied grunt coming from it once it finished. Ekstrom's expression softened, taking the sound as its reply to her question, and offered it a celery stick this time. It sniffed at the snack just once before taking it this time, and it allowed her to rest her hand on its head as it ate. It took her offered apple and strawberry slices in exchange for allowing her to touch the armor and lance adorning its head, and before long the container was half-empty but the accolade had lowered its head so that it could nuzzle at her cheek.

Ekstrom giggled at the ticklish sort of feeling of what was maybe a sort of affectionate gesture. She quietly hoped that this meant it accepted her, too, but even if it hadn't she imagined she'd be perfectly happy with having earned a little nuzzle just the same.

"I wonder if you might let me name you," she said as she moved to start walking toward where the next event would take place. To her surprise, the accolade followed just beside her with its head lowered slightly so she could easily reach up and gently rub or scratch its cheek. Which she did, as well as offer more snacks. After just a few steps she had fully relaxed and started suggesting names as they went.

(Abzu, Eridu)

Abzu figured, considering he wanted to participate in the rest of the event, plus he had declared Stromboli his fair one--to Stromboli's protest--he might as well try with these horses. Accolades. Whatever they were called. Abzu hadn't rode a horse in years, not since his grandparents would simply plop him on one at events. Easier said than done to get his squirming under control, but perhaps he'd be able to convince one that he was cool now.

Well.

It seemed like it worked well enough, in any case. One followed after him, in an admirable lavender as well.

Abzu was going to turn to brag to His Fair One about how well he had done, but he did a double take when he realized he had been outshined.

---------

Not outshined, not really. Eridu wasn't trying to compete against their son, nor were they fighting for any fair one, nor were they competing for anything other than the fun of it. There was still a moment of pride when they realized they had managed to wrangle an accolade without trying terribly hard, and this particular one seemed nowhere near as winded as some of the others did.

Even as they weren't competing against Abzu and weren't even trying to, Eridu couldn't help the spike of elder sibling fun as they stuck their tongue out at Abzu.

Just for good measure.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Debating between delighted squeals and shocked laughter, Chariklo surveyed the herd of whatsits... accolades. Okay, so... they had to catch one and make friends. It was... well. She wouldn't call it easy. She knew how much trouble regular wild horses could give when trying to be captured. But it was doable. She just had to be smart about it.

Feeling more confident than she probably had any right to, the senshi of seagulls eyed a soft, dappled grey creature and headed in its direction. As she alternated between pspspsp-ing and actually chasing the blasted thing, she wondered just how smart these critters were. The one she was after was leading her on a less than merry chase towards the bailey wall. It was taunting her. Still, from what she could see, the ground here was more or less level. Thinking that she could circle around and somehow come up behind the accolade, Chariklo took a step out onto the turf and immediately knew that she’d made a mistake. The ‘ground’ under her didn’t even hold her weight for a moment and she felt herself plummet into the chill waters of the moat. Good thing swimming is as natural as breathing, she thought with grim amusement. Otherwise, I might be in trouble.

Getting out of the moat was easy enough. Sure, she was wet and a bit cold, but she’d warm up. Glaring over to where the accolade stood, Chariklo wondered, again, just how smart it was. Then, taking a breath, she simply ran at it, letting her annoyance fuel her. And it did take longer than she liked, but eventually, they both seemed to run out of drive and she was able to reach out a tired hand and catch its bridle. Holding on for dear life, she rather thought that she accolade seemed annoyed that she was unpleasantly damp.

“And whose fault is that,” she muttered under her breath at it. After a moment, she led it over to the pile of banners and grabbed one. Reaching up, she tied it on and nodded. Now they were getting somewhere.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Xibalba really had no plan beyond Grab the Funny Horse Thing when he began his chase. He wasn’t particular since every accolade (seriously, who had named these things? And, more importantly, where in the hell had they come from?) looked strong, study and ready to ******** go. And, as he stalked a small cluster of them, his eye fell on one with a reddish, striped hide. Its armor was rough and spiky… Just like him. And its red eyes were only slightly less baleful when they fell on him as compared to the others. Well, why not?

Narrowing his focus, he followed the accolade relentlessly, though he was careful to not actually chase it. He had the idea that an animal would be more willing to work with a human as long as the human didn’t ******** it up by being an a*****e. Still, big as these things were… He wouldn’t be able to pull all his metaphorical punches. Still, he was determined to rely only on his own strength to catch it. He could already see a bridle of sorts on it, so he’d have something to grip.

Let’s do this, he thought, moving quickly and thinking that if he could herd the accolade into the woods where movement would be hindered by the trees, he’d have the best chance. The accolade, obligingly, took off into the forest, clearly hoping to avoid capture. Not today, laddie buck, the squire thought with a tight grin.

Making plenty of noise, he crashed through the underbrush, listening as the accolade moved on ahead. It was key to make it think that he was in relentless pursuit. And fortunately, forests could be very noisy when you wanted them to be. All it took, in the end, was making a racket and gently herding the accolade deeper into the woods where there weren’t so many nice, open spaces to run through. And finally, finally, they both reached a place where the accolade
Couldn’t escape without more difficulty than it would be worth. XIbalba stood panting, a mere arms length away and watched carefully.

The accolade seemed slightly put out by its predicament. Then, it snorted and turned to face him. It didn’t look happy, the squire thought. In fact, it was looking everywhere but at him, as if in doing so, it could ignore him and the fact that it had been out maneuvered. Grinning and grimy, Xibalba carefully stepped forward, reaching out a hand to take the bridle. The accolade allowed it and seemed willing enough to go with him.

“Ach, lovely,” he rumbled. “Ah’ve ne’er seen the likes o’ye before, but y’r magnificent,” he murmured, stroking the beast’s nose. “Come along now and we’ll get ye somewhere more comfortable.”

To be honest, he was delighted now that he could see the accolade up close. This was, he thought, the sort of mount that any Mars knight would be pleased to ride and work with. Moving carefully, mindful of the accolade’s comfort, he cleared the brush with one hand, carefully holding the bridle in the other as he led the creature from the woods. “Ach, we’re goin’ tae have so much fun!” he cooed.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. They had to catch a weird horse? Seriously? Sighing in Tiny Girl Problems, Orcus resigned herself to her fate. Since she lacked the height and arms reach of most of the people here, she’d have to rely more on her wits and personal magnetism.

Well, she was screwed.

Still, now that she was here, her pride wouldn’t let her leave without making a catch. And in theory, she did like horses and these were sort of horse-like. Mind made up, she took a moment to study the herd before her eye landed on a green (what the ******** was this, Oz?!?) dappled accolade. Nodding to herself, she decided that she liked that one and she made her way towards it.

Since she lacked raw muscle power, she jogged, following the beast and talking to it in a soft voice. Nothing cloying or infantilizing though. She abhored baby talk, even when done to animals. And surely something like this creature would hate it too. Instead, she heaped praise upon it and offered words of support.

“Aren’t you the most impressive thing? Oop, careful of that rock. You don’t want to turn your ankle. You look pretty sturdy though, so maybe a turned ankle wouldn’t bother you…”

As she chattered, she thought that the accolade seemed to like her well enough. Or at least, it didn’t mind her. And it didn’t lead her on a wild chase the way she could see others doing. It didn’t make things studpily easy for her, but it didn’t try to make them stupidly difficult either. And after about twenty minutes of ‘chasing’, it snorted in what seemed to be good humor and bowed its head, letting her grab the bridle. Still, it resisted her pull just enough to let her know that while it didn’t mind her, was willing to play nice with her, it was still it’s own person. Well, fair enough.

“Damn, you’re even more impressive up close,” she said, thinking that she was either going to need a lift up or find a way to coax the accolade into lying down so she could mount. “I think we’re going to be a good team. We both like winning and I haven’t gotten to show up any arrogant jerks lately. Of course, I don’t know what the Knight here plans for us and I could always fall on my face, but I’ll do my best for you.”

It was incredibly silly to be talking to a weird horse, but she thought that the accolade might appreciate it. Turning, the pair began walking back the way they’d come. Once the got back, she headed for the pile of banners and dug through, finding some green ones that matched her accolade. To her delight, it eyed her for a moment as she stood there holding the bits of cloth and then dipped its head, just enough to let her tie the banners on.

“Well! You are the polite one,” she said as she quickly knotted the cloth. “Thank you!”
