User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Name: Quiana
Stage: 4 - Sacred Heart
Race: Elidae
Gender: Female
Base Traits: Inquisitive, Slothful/Escapist, Enticing,
Personality: A very curious creature by nature Quiana is always keen to investigate anything that catches her interest. Over time the practice of observing and asking questions has given her good insight into the ways of others. She has found that she has a natural instinct for watching and reading others and prefers to work with their interests instead of simply using brute force to get her way. Since she is such an inquisitive creature it was not uncommon for her to try and learn as much as possible about everything and everyone on the island.

In order to satisfy her curiosity the girl has learned to be rather calculating. It takes a while to get one's way and she has learn that patience plus a bit of pulling the strings from behind assists in the waiting game. Whether it is a simple task of gaining information from another through conversation or whether it is tricking two sisters into abandoning a beautiful rare feather in favor of something else (perhaps even for something of far less value) Quiana has proven that she is quite coy when it comes to things.

Such skills may have been strengthened in favor of the fact that Quiana does prefer to spend time just relaxing rather than constantly stressing/training. However, in order to get away with her slothful behavior (of resting in the sunlight, of dreaming away the hours, or simply of oversleeping) she had to learn to be sharp. Else the older Elarian cousins would chastise her or give her a new chore to make up for the one that she passed onto another (hence why she would try her best to slip a task onto someone else or hide away that it was never done in the first place). Quiana's preference is always for mental puzzles over physical feats, something which her grandmother allowed her plenty of freedom to do as she did admittedly spoil the child. The downside being that Quiana may not have quite the stamina as the others nor does she have as much motivation for overcoming obstacles unless they truly interest her. (It's much easier to just place something boring aside in favor of a nap after all.)

What may additionally assist her in convincing sisters to do her a favor or even in simply making them lower their guard is that she does have an enticing way about her. Quiana is like a keldari in some regards as she has a natural grace which will develop more as she ages, a sway of her hips and a seductive gaze, which may sometimes overcome one when she decides to utilize it in the future. Her voice as well could have belonged to an enchantress as she purrs her way around others. If being a bard was an option then one may have expected it from her due to the way that she can also sing and dance.

Since learning more about her family and exploring the world though Quiana has accepted the burden of some responsibilities, opting to help others instead of simply shrugging off any duties. She has embraced her free spirit and desires to travel the world while growing closer to her new family and friends.

History: Quiana's grandmother was dedicated to her lover. The pair had always been together ever since Thyra had first encountered the older warrior and Thyra refused to let anything separate her from her darling Elu. However, while they were perfectly in sync during hunts and battles the two Alkidike warriors did have different opinions about their earthling neighbors. While Elu absolutely despised earthlings Thyra who was younger and less bitter was more tolerant of them and secretly thought that it would be okay if their races tried to coexist more. Still, she was not the type to stand against her lover and when the Extremists acted against the earthlings she found herself whisked along by her passionate mate who wanted nothing more than to eradicate the earthlings from their lands.

Sadly enough that passion which burned brightest in hatred also was extinguished in hatred as Elu refused to lower her weapons, even when pelted with arrows from earthling archers, and bled to death on the battlefield in Thyra's arms. She had begged her to change her mind, begged her to pull back but the other Alkidike was stubborn and too proud to admit defeat. She would rather die that day than see Aisha's image tarnished by those who would choose to live with earthlings and even mate with them. She died with a curse on her lips, not even a smile left for Thyra as she wept bitter tears over Elu's death. Without Elu there was no fight left in the young warrior and she found herself quickly surrendering, her spirit extinguished as her previously colorful world turned dark and gray. While perhaps she could have argued her way out of exile, her gentle nature obvious to many, Thyra instead opted to go with the other extremists to Yael. It was her punishment for not standing up against her lover and fighting to change her mind, to change her fate from the bitter end that was caused by such hatred.

She was numb while living in Yael. Completely heartbroken and without purpose. Weeks turned into months and then came a strange and new thing from their transplanted tree. Thyra would have never imagined blooms in this strange, rocky landscape but there they were. New children, Elaria as they called them, sprouted from the new tree's roots and soon a miracle happened. A lone bloom had blossomed and they needed her aid in raising the child. After much hesitation and some protests Thyra found herself acting as a young mother and took Ocyale as her own. Perhaps it was the similar markings that weakened her spirit, but she could imagine that this child would have been theirs had Elu lived. As those little hands reached up to tug at her dreads the first smile in months crossed her lips and Thyra felt her heart melting. While she was mourning and would always have some piece of her heart missing this was at least a chance to find some life again, to see hope in a world that had been encased in darkness. It was through this child that she began to believe in life again and when the opportunity came for her to cross the ocean with her daughter she opted to do so. It was finally time to let Elu's spirit rest and for her to finally live again for her daughter's sake.

It was there that Ocyale found herself gifted an Elidae bloom, a perfect daughter resembling both Ocyale and Thyra. Like her mother Quiana was adored by Thyra but unlike Thrya while Ocyale loved her daughter she felt far too young to sit still for motherhood. So when Ocyale opted to travel the world the little one found herself raised mostly by her grandmother. Thyra would chastise her granddaughter but even her punishments were light as she couldn't truly bring herself to be mean to the loving child. Instead she showered her with love and patience as she had her own daughter whom she had protected from the more hardened Extremists all those years ago. Soon enough that protective nature only increased as lack of word from Ocyale and the hurried message of a Sister who had traveled with her made Thyra realize that her daughter may never be able to return. If not for the youngilng in her arms the Alkidike may have given up on things completely, but she knew that her granddaughter needed her. She would take care of the little one who would grow up considering her more a mother instead of grandmother as Quiana would be too young to remember much if anything about her lost mother. However, she would opt to do it on the outskirts of the community where she had exiled herself since not being completely comfortable with the others considering her own history and regrets. For years Quiana was content spending time on the island with her grandmother, but as the older Alkidike's health fades the urge to reunite the family or at least find answers to her mother's disappearance has pushed Quiana to leave home. While out searching for answers she has explored many areas with the Kahi and finally arrived in Matori where she reunited with her missing family. Along the way she met Siel who became an important partner in her life, someone she is willing to trust more than ever before, and after saying goodbye to her grandmother in Kahi the Elidae has opted to travel with him. Eventually the maturity of her own tree led to Quiana asking her partner to have children with her, the pair raising four hybrids outside of Kiros before traveling the world together with them.
Interesting Tidbits: -Very musical, sometimes seems more like a bard than a warrior
-Loves sunbathing
-Silks and flowing outfits are her favorites
-Prefers fresh fruits to sweets

♥ Sacred Heart ♥

“Ocyale.” Quiana repeated the name with a frown. It was such a strange thing to cross her lips because of how forbidden the word typically was around her grandmother but the young Elidae felt like repeating it over and over for some particular reason. “Ocyale.” She almost hissed out the word now and drawled out the final part before quickly shaking her head, her light teal dreads bouncing with the sudden motion. She did not like it one bit! It was not as if she could even remember the Elaria who had been given her bloom in the first place and honestly while she felt bad for her grandmother, Quiana was quite content with the way that things were on their little area of the island. They had their small hut, her favorite pile of pillows making up a nest more than a bed against the shuttered windows and her grandmother did everything to take care of her. She never had to worry about being forced to hunt with the other Sisters or to even do anything other than what interested her like cooking and dancing. Mostly dancing but Quiana did enjoy creating some delicious meals from the fish and other things that her grandmother and others brought back to their humble abode. Her grandmother had at least made herself known as a wise mentor to the younger generation and so many of them came to her when they wanted to learn more about the traditional magic of the Alkidikes.

Perhaps that was why Thyra would at least push Quiana about this one thing. The very thought made Quiana mutter her actual mother’s name in distaste. If her mother was here then she would be the one pushed into the whole inheriting the family trade thing. Well, not that Aishans had many trades to decide from considering they were all mostly warrior women with a few blacksmiths scattered here and there. Quiana had tried to ask about it before, especially once she had heard about all of the professions that earthlings had but apparently dancing and singing was considered simply playing around and nothing more by her kind. Maybe if her real mother had been here then she could have gotten away with playing around a little bit longer than this. But her grandmother was constantly worried passing on to meet Aisha and leaving Quiana to fend for herself. So grow up quickly she must. Though that wasn’t fair considering how much Thyra was the real mother and mentor to her. Quiana let out a sigh at the thought before reaching for the slender bow that her grandmother had gifted her. They had talked about it before and Quiana had finally caved into the request to at least try the bow since she didn’t like the spear or the swords. It wasn’t too bad honestly and she had proven that she could hit the target with flaming arrows quite efficiently. Apparently it had delighted her grandmother to know that her granddaughter could become a sacred heart archer as well. “In memory of Ocyale.” Quipped Quiana with a soft sigh as she placed the bow to the side. It wasn’t as if she were unhappy with the bow and she did really enjoy using it. She was just slightly disgruntled about why it felt like her best option instead of something that sang to her. A sad smile crossed the Elidae's face as she gave a small shrug. It was what it was.

“I’ll grow accustomed to using you soon, I promise.” Quiana murmured as she traced her fingers across the smooth wood one final time before leaving the room. It was about time she went on a walk and found someplace sunny to nap while things were quiet. A yawn left her lips at the thought. Yep, definitely a good time to nap indeed.

♥ Solo ♥

The sun was beautiful today. It was a shame that it was wasted on Quiana’s foul mood, the girl walking along the beach with an expression of pure disdain across her fine features. Thyra had once again brought up her long lost mother and the girl found her temper flaring with every mention of the Elaria woman. If she was so grand then why had she abandoned her here so many years ago?! “Ugh.” Quiana kicked at a loose shell and watched as it skittered towards the ocean, her mood only worsened as she realized that it had been a nice shell until her kick had shattered it against a smaller rock tucked into the sands. Would that even be her fault? Already she had taken up the bow, had shown that she had an affinity for magic but even that seemed nothing in comparison to all of the wonders that her mother had performed. Quiana let out a sigh as she sank into the sand and just sat there with her knees pulled up tightly against her chest. She was happy with her grandmother and enjoyed just lazing about during the days so why did she even bother to change anything? It was best to be seen as lazy than as anything worthwhile because that just led to more expectations. She refused to become Ocyale’s replacement! Was that why she avoided being a serious warrior since her mother had been such a star pupil? Quiana closed her eyes in frustration, tears seeping from the corners as she reflected upon her recent tantrums. All of this time she had just wanted space to be herself but the traditions of her race had decreed she must pick up a weapon or do something beneficial like blacksmithing. Being a dancer like some earthlings would simply be a waste of her true potential. Quiana sneered at the thought, her frustrations with her mother reflecting upon her own ideas about this life. If her mother had been a sacred heart with a bow it would only make sense that she too would pick it up, right? The most frustrating part was knowing that she had a natural affinity for the bow and arrow as well! How could one escape that when their own body seemed to accept things as they were? “It’s all so stupid.” She breathed, her very being cursing her ancestors and their stubborn ways before caving in further to curse herself for not being able to simply accept that she was going to be a warrior like her mother was and her grandmother was and so on.

Suddenly a gentle hand tapped her shoulder and the Elidae found herself glancing towards the familiar face of her grandmother. The older Alkidike had streaks of gray spreading through her dreads but her face barely showed any wrinkles save for when she smiled, the corners of her mouth tightening to reveal more details about her actual age. “It’s not good to just bottle things up, Quiana.” She whispered as she kept a hand on her granddaughter’s shoulder in support. “Do you need to talk about it?”

“I…” Quiana bit her lip in protest before shaking her head. “I’ll be fine.” A lie but one that she had been relying on for the past several years since realizing that a part of her did miss her mother instead of simply despising her. It was silly, right? She had her grandmother showering her in affection but then she bounced between being jealous of a mother who was never there for her and then also missing said mother because something just felt amiss between her grandmother and her. Thyra would always seem to miss Ocyale more and it made Quiana feel like she didn’t truly exist for her grandmother some days. The realization hurt and it was why she was here on the beach in the first place, her anger deflating into just more tears as she silently cried with her grandmother sitting down next to her.

“The tide is rolling in.” Thyra mentioned after a while, her expression thoughtful and her voice gentle despite her granddaughter’s earlier outburst and the mess that they would both return to at the cottage they shared. “I’m sure the sun will start sinking soon.”

“So it seems.” Managed Quiana as she controlled her breathing better now, the tears finally starting to slow from their previous flood. “Time moves strangely fast.” She continued as she studied the horizon. “Do you think the ocean will ever change because of it?”

“Perhaps. Only Aisha knows.” Replied Thyra with a small smile as she crossed her ankles and leaned back a bit more into the sands. “Then again everything changes a bit at a time. Even Aisha has changed over the years and I’m sure she treasures all of her daughters the same. It’s just hard to not worry about the one who isn’t seen while still loving those that decided to stay near.”

It was a vague explanation but Quiana knew what her grandmother meant. “I know.” She finally replied after a long moment. “Trust me I know. It just doesn’t help the ones that stay close to think of those who are gone because then they feel overlooked.” She admitted almost shyly. “They all want to be loved but sometimes it seems those that are gone get thought of the most.”

“Sometimes it may seem that way but truly it’s not the case. Aisha loves all of her daughters but those in trouble may need the attention more at the current time. Everyone has their turn and their needs at different points of life.” Her grandmother finally answered before standing and holding out a hand. “Let’s go find something to eat, okay?”

“Okay.” Maybe nothing would ever be perfect but at least Quiana knew her grandmother meant well and for now that would have to be enough.

♥ Growth Solo ♥

Her grandmother was ill. Quiana had gone her whole childhood relying on the older Alkidike and had taken everything for granted. Recently though she had been very angry against her grandmother because of jealousy that came up whenever she heard about her mother. Her grandmother seemed so intent on just remembering the Elaria who had ditched both of them that Quiana felt hurt and lashed out accordingly. This time though her brutal words were halted whenever Thrya stumbled backwards and eventually passed out. Thankfully some of the older Elaria were nearby and had helped to settle her back into their small home that they shared along the edges of the encampment.

“Are you alright?” Quiana had been holding Thyra’s hands tightly in her own while waiting on her grandmother to stir. The healer had just advised giving her more rest but other than that it wasn’t anything major to worry about. Still, Quiana found herself at a loss while waiting on Thyra to heal. Seeing her like that had been a sharp wakeup call and a reminder that their time together would be limited. It was so limited that she found her own heart twisting in her chest as she thought of her recent actions of the last year. So many arguments about her mother and about how her grandmother didn’t really want her to be around. Her mother was obviously the better companion and the like. She had been so bratty and rude about her mother that she hadn’t even considered how her grandmother must desperately miss her own daughter. Even with Quiana to give her love there was still that gaping hole from losing her daughter all of those years ago. But it didn’t mean that Thrya didn’t love Quiana either and that much Quiana was certain of. She simply had allowed jealousy to push them apart like some spoiled child.

The very thought made the young Elidae sigh. Maybe just maybe there was still a chance that her mother was out there. Recent news had made its way to their home and that was what she currently pondered. Apparently some Elaria was living along Matori who reminded the older Sisters of Quiana. The very thought brought a shiver down her spine. If her mother was actually alive then what was she doing in Matori? It was ridiculous, right? Even if it was true then why would Quiana even want to try and reach out to such a horrible person? Her grandmother should just let her go as she had all of those years ago! Why did they need someone who had abandoned them? Quiana let out a sigh, frustration rising before glancing back at her grandmother. Perhaps if her grandmother was in fine health the girl would have easily tossed such news aside but now she was finding herself pondering options. Perhaps for her grandmother she could set her pride aside and go seek out the Elaria who had abandoned them. Maybe her mother had a valid reason….maybe it would be something to ease her grandmother’s spirit instead of holding onto such pain? “I’ll never forgive you mother but at the same time my love for grandmama is far stronger than my hate.” Quiana found herself admitting with a soft sigh. For once in her life she would prioritize someone else’s happiness over her own. She would push her limits and try to solve this mystery about why her mother had left so many years ago and reunited her grandmother with her darling daughter that she so desperately missed. Jealousy be damned because Quiana was determined to do the right thing for once! “I’ll leave a note.” She mused as she started pacing the room and gathering whatever supplies she would need for this new adventure.

[630]

Quiana is growing emotionally as she is letting go of her jealousy and opting to do something for someone else rather than herself. She’s going to push her limits and try to track down the mother that she swore she cared nothing about because she wants her grandmother to have a chance at a reunion with her mother before time takes those final chances away. It’s both an emotional growth and an opening chapter for a new adventure that will take her out into the world.

♥ Reflection Solo ♥

The azure waves lapped at the pearly white sands surrounding the smaller Kahikina village. From Quiana’s vantage point on the upper cliffs she could see the shimmering colors of the coral reefs just below the surface of the water, the vibrant reds and oranges especially standing out against the sparkling blue water. Her own home had similar views though the coral reef was mostly unique here with formations that were nearly as big as a house in certain areas of the reef which the Hapuna loved swimming through during their free time, the Kahikina protecting this cove with all of their might while growing their families on the island right next to it. Quiana had been quite happy exploring this area once Konana had introduced her to his home village, the smaller population surprisingly friendly and open to the appearance of an Elidae who had taken to staying with them for a time as she prepared to travel all the way to the other continent. It did help that she had Konana’s help, the golden Hapuna obviously was well loved within the community for all the things he did to help others while roaming between this settlement and the bigger settlements to help trade whatever this little village produced throughout the year. She truly had been lucky that he had nearly drowned in front of her during that awful storm a few weeks back. The very thought brought a chuckle to Quiana’s lips despite the recent worrying thoughts that had been nagging at the back of her mind. Ever since meeting that strange Elarian hybrid with pale green eyes and Matori traits, the blue striking against the Elarian skin and features, Quiana’s mind had been working on some sort of puzzle. Something about Noelani simply didn’t sit well with her and Quiana doubted it was simply because her existence proved that Elarian hybrids were much more than simply rumors and were now actually realty. Who knew how many other hybrids like Noelani existed in this world? How ironic that the tree planted by those who wanted nothing to do with hybrids was now following the same path as Aisha! Would her mother tree do the same one day should earthlings even get close enough for a blessing with an Elidae? Would any Elidae even entertain such thoughts or feelings after being raised in their secluded island community? Would she? Quiana bit at her bottom lip thoughtfully. She did not have many earthling interactions, but the few that she had gave her no cause to dislike earthlings. She especially could not imagine hating them any more than she could anyone else that bothered her or was vile in her opinion, regardless of race. Konana had proven to her that the Kahikina were not a bad people either and she honestly enjoyed spending time with the light-hearted man who always thought of others before himself. His rose colored eyes were always gleaming with laughter and his violet hair reminded Quiana of her favorite wildflowers as embarrassing as that was to admit! Maybe if she had not been on a mission to find her lost mother the Elidae would even entertain thinking about where she could go by spending more time with Konana and learning about this little village. So maybe it was not such a ridiculous thought to think that at least one other Elidae could open her heart to foreigners like this. It was not as if their mothers were against the outside world either. They simply had wanted to protect their own kind and keep away from the war hungry Extremists who had sought to create more pain and misery for those who refused to accept the mixture of Aishans and earthlings. Still even Quiana could not imagine her grandmother’s reaction if she came back with a Hapuna to introduce to the family! She would most definitely have some sort of reaction to that one! Speaking of family though…Quiana made a face and laid back against the cool stone of the cliffside, her legs dangling freely from her perch as she sorted through her recent encounter. There had been a festival but then there had been that Matori and Elarian hybrid with markings that really bothered Quiana. They had reminded her of something and the more she thought about it the more the realization really nagged at her. The throat markings were one thing but the forehead marking was exactly like her grandmother’s somehow. Had she ever seen anyone else like that? Quiana’s frown deepened at the thought. “An Elaria who broke away from her Sisters to raise a family with a Matori?” Noelani was definitely a couple of years younger than her from the looks of things and the way she seemed so skittish towards the end of their meeting. Had something similar crossed her mind? Not that Noelani seemed to know anything about the Elidae and it was not as if she would know that her markings strongly favored Quiana’s grandmother. They had matching neck markings and even the arm markings that Quiana had seen peeking out from the other girl’s cloak were similar enough with lines under her eyes. None of the Elidae she knew had such markings. ”Esena no.” She murmured with a groan. It wasn’t possible, was it? Surely there were a ton of Elaria who had run away from Zinris to go be in Matori, right? She didn’t even know if that was actually where her mother had went! But those Elaria who had visited and prompted her journey in the first place had mentioned seeing her mother briefly in that area before they lost her again. Not that anyone had known to track her mother down at the time. How could they since they had lived in Zinris this whole time and didn’t realize that her grandmother had lost her daughter all those years ago? The last time they had even seen Ocyale was when they were just young teens! There had not been any communication since they had left Zinris so no one realized that Thyra was desperately praying for her daughter’s return. They simply thought the Elaria was exploring and had opted to give them the cold shoulder instead of saying hello! It was a consequence of the separation and the birth of Esena which had divided their own kin for so long. Another groan left her lips as she slumped even further back against the cliff as if willing the stone to swallow her whole in her confusion. At the moment she had not thought anything about it because the chances were so narrow and it was not as if Noelani had revealed much about her family before disappearing in the crowd to chase after some companion. What if she had even been lying about that? Maybe she even gave the name Noelani to throw Quiana off track? No, the stranger hadn’t seemed to be the sort to lie easily since her emotions had been so obviously written in every expression she gave Quiana during their short encounter. “She definitely would have been a horrible liar.” But now what did it matter? She was somewhere off on the islands far away from Quiana. She could try to track her down but Quiana didn’t know if this suspicion would be worth the time it would take. Then she would miss the ship that Konana had helped her to locate…the very thought made her sigh with frustration. She had been so close to a potential lead and had just let it slip away!

“I am an idiot.”

“How so?” The familiar voice made Quiana nearly jump from her spot on the cliff but thankfully a pair of hands kept her from moving, the warmth making her cheeks flush as the pressure pushed her back into a sitting position. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.”

“Thanks, Konana.” Murmured Quiana as she tilted her head up to look at the smiling Hapuna. “Next time maybe announce yourself before watching me dive into the ocean, okay?” She quipped with a shake of her head though the expression in her gaze was still somewhat depressed as she stared back towards the ocean. For once Quiana wasn’t even really in the mood to joke around with her friend.

“Will do.” Konana frowned as he settled on the cliff a bit above Quiana. “Something seems to be on your mind though. Are you alright?” He had been protective of the Elidae ever since she had saved his life during the flood, the pair forming an unexpected companionship considering their different backgrounds.

“Well since you already know about the reason behind my journey, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to tell you.” Mused Quiana after a moment. “I met a strange Elarian hybrid who reminds me of my grandmother. Since my grandmother was an Alkidike and received my mother back in Zinris…well my mother is Elarian, right? So what if that girl somehow….” Her voice trailed off as her frown deepened. “Maybe my mother has been living in Matori for all of these years and made a new family with an earthling.”

“I see.” Konana blinked thoughtfully. “You think that is the reason she never came back?”

“Maybe, but even that doesn’t settle well with me. If that girl was related to me then I let a good lead slip through my fingers.”

“Honestly it may not be the worst situation.”

“What do you mean?” Quiana twisted so that she could stare at Konana. “She’s no longer here!”

“But you know she has family in Matori, right?”

“...Yes?”

“And you have her name so maybe it would not be impossible to track down her family home and then waiting at her home could be her mother, right? Even if it’s not the woman you are looking for then maybe she has something that could help you. Maybe your cousins or someone that would recognize your mother’s name since she surely has been wandering through that region.”

“That’s true.” Quiana pursed her lips thoughtfully. “She’s not been to Zinris since others haven’t seen her in years and obviously she’s not been here. So she has to be in the earthling lands somewhere!” So if Noelani couldn’t be found then Quiana at least knew that she had to start looking in Matori. There had to be some sort of connection and she would explore it! “Thank you, Konana!” Quiana’s expression was actually bright as she stood up and carefully climbed her way back up the cliff to join her friend. “I think that settles things. I’m going to go with the ship as soon as it leaves in the morning.” Obviously she would miss this little village but Quiana honestly hoped that she could visit it again and Konana in the near future. She just had to figure out this mystery first and bring her mother home to finally reunite with her grandmother.

♥ Surprise Confrontation and Reveal ♥

While Quiana’s initial reveal with Noelani had gone well it did nothing to ease her nerves as they finally arrived together in Matori. The traveling trio had spent the last two days just learning more about each other, finding out snippets of childhood stories, favorite things and the like. Apparently Noelani liked cooler colors while Quiana enjoyed them but also preferred some warmer colors that reminded her of the sunset. They did both enjoy spicier things over sweets and had a penchant for collecting shiny objects, Noelani even more so than Quiana. There was also the mutual love for the ocean with both enjoying swimming in the deeper waters, Noelani even more so since she had grown up in Matori and learned how to dive for pearls. Quiana had been more outgoing as a child while Noelani was raised in seclusion, emerging as a shy girl before growing into her confidence after traveling some and interacting with others more whenever she was a young adult. In a way they both had known super protective families, Quiana at least having a community where she was protected while Noelani’s whole world had been with her parents and grandparents together in this particular cove for over ten years of her life. It was at least a beautiful cove, so Quiana hoped it wasn’t too horrible a childhood spent here. Quiana took comfort in that realization as they dismounted and started walking across the pristine sands. It wasn’t crystal clear water like in Kahi, but the oceans of Matori were still beautiful even with the darker waters that hid so many secrets. The cliffs with the waterfalls cascading over them throughout the islands were also breath-taking and Quiana enjoyed how the waves crashed against the rockier terrain in certain areas of the nearby cove. The house that Noelani and Nanami introduced her to was quiet for the moment, the children apparently having been staying with their grandparents at Noelani’s childhood home which was further down the island. While they went to gather their children to introduce to Quiana at tonight’s dinner, the Elidae had opted to stay back to just take in everything. “Interesting.” She crossed her arms and studied the circular outer building, the stone structure having archways with sheer netting to keep out insects and a thatched roof to protect from any sudden rainstorms. Two large round tables were set on the dais, one that she assumed were for the children while the other one hosted the adults with vibrant cushions in various colors and designs scattered around. It was similar to the Oban style, but with much more color and life thanks to the decorations and backdrop of the ocean. Smooth stone steps were embedded into the sand, the path curving from the columns of the outer dining area and heading into an actual stone manor that was nestled closer to the cliffs. It had thatch along the roof to blend in with the local trees, the rich greens and browns contrasting nicely with the pale gray that was nearly white walls that Quiana assumed were from the nearby cliffs since the color matched the rocks scattered throughout the beach. When she walked closer, her hands carefully reaching out to touch the outer walls that had been warmed by the morning sunlight, she could see pieces of quartz that shimmered in between the pieces. It was an intricate detail and one that did not surprise her considering how fond Nanami was of precious gemstones as a kawena who had lived in caverns for most of her life before coming to Matori. Quiana had only ever met a couple of kawena while traveling the islands, but all of them seemed to have a deep affinity for gemstones because of their underground homes. It was not surprising to hear Nanami express the same adoration of the stones, especially once she also revealed her love of the night sky where the stars shone just the same as quartz in sunlight.

The manor itself had steps around it, the building on a slight incline to keep it from flooding easily should a bad ocean storm ever hit the area, and there were bushes of tropical flowers and growing vines vibrant colors almost like emerald and amethyst crystals that were in between each platform leading up to the main doors. Not only did they bring more color to the neutral colored walls and steps, but the flowers smelled so fragrant that Quiana was tempted to pluck one to tuck behind an ear so that the smell would linger around her. As much as she enjoyed the salty smell of the fresh ocean air it was nice to have something different for a change, especially when it smelled as pleasant as the little flowers did. A quick look around before she decided to actually take one, the Elidae hoping that surely nothing poisonous would be grown at the front door of her family’s home, and Quiana tucked it neatly into her locks before continuing on towards the entrance. Did she truly dare to enter when no one else was home? “Noelani did say I was welcome to come inside and explore while they were away.” Mused Quiana quietly, twisting around to survey the surrounding beach and cliffs one last time before finally going inside. If Noelani trusted her enough to offer such a thing then surely it would be fine.

The entrance was almost like a display with various objects hanging on the walls and cases lining up near where one was expected to leave their shoes behind. Quiana crouched and quickly untied her laces, leaving her sandals on a wooden rack before going forward more with her bare feet enjoying the cool stone floors. “Ancient daggers? A fan that looks like it has golden embroidery and….I don’t even know if I want to know what that is.” She mused as she peered through some of the hanging pieces that followed her down the hallway. To the left it looked like there was a large living space, more cushions with low tables for the family to lounge around while enjoying the evenings together, and glass orbs held candles that Quiana assumed would be lit whenever it was too dark outside for the large glass windows to be of any use. Sheer curtains fluttered in the ocean breeze from the few windows that were open and it was hard to not be distracted by everything as she continued passing rooms. There was so much unique decor! Noelani definitely did not lie whenever she said she was an avid collector and treasure hunter. Then past the living spaces, study and even another room that looked like storage with a washroom next to it there was an upper level with twisting wooden stairs leading upwards that would probably hold the bedrooms, that much she recognized when she had glanced at the place from the outside. The round structure went from solid stone to more wooden structures on the second level with large archways that only had netting to protect the occupants from the elements, a perfect way to stay cool while living in the hotter climate of the ocean country. Quiana’s own home had been similar, a thatched hut with large open windows to allow in the ocean breeze and the very thought made her heart twist. Truly, she hoped that they could get to Kahi sooner than later since she worried about her grandmother. Now that she had left the island it was hard to imagine staying there forever, but at the same time she wanted to visit and see her grandmother who had been her only family until Noelani had encountered her in Kahi and opened up the path to this reunion. Noelani. Just the name alone was a hint to her true heritage. That was something else she had found strange…the fact that Ocyale had named her daughter after a Kahi city, almost as if her subconscious had been trying to remind her of something from forever ago. How could anyone in Matori piece that together though? It wasn’t as if the Kahi islands were an easy journey, it took weeks to get there and mostly only merchants and brave adventurers dared to go to such a foreign area for now from what Quiana had gathered since her arrival in Matori. Most expected any Elaria that showed up to come from Zinris, not the secluded village of rebels who had run away from the Extremists. “Let’s not dwell on stressful things for now.” Quiana told herself, trying to focus again on all the interesting things inside the home. It seemed the washroom was only a simple room in comparison to a corridor that led further from the house and into the cliffs themselves. Had they somehow made a bathing chamber with a natural spring that flowed directly from inside of the cliffs? How unusual! Glowing crystals lit the path instead of candles due to how damp the area was, the chamber just opening up into a cavern-like room with a pool in the middle where the springwater dripped down from the ceiling like a tiny waterfall. “Cold but useful.” Quiana crouched and reached a hand out to touch the water, the icy coldness instantly making her snatch her hand back to her chest. “This is definitely for Nanami.” She mused with a laugh, not daring to imagine being bold enough to take a bath in such cold waters without some way to warm them first. Since a bath was obviously out of the picture for the moment, Quiana could only hope that they had some sort of food in the kitchen for her to snack on while she waited. The Elidae had been so nervous that she had opted to pick at breakfast before they left the inn, not really wanting much on her stomach just in case. Now though she was finding that she very much regretted that decision as her stomach protested once more. “Alright, well food should be just around here.” Back through the corridor she went until she found another hallway that led to a kitchen, the larger room having plenty of space to cook with stone counters, wide storage closets along the sides and a wonderful view of the ocean from large windows that were open to allow in the breeze. Thankfully there was something fresh on the counter and Quiana found herself drifting towards it. Should she be concerned about fresh rolls being here? Perhaps Noelani’s grandparents had left such it earlier in anticipation of their return from Oba? Either way Quiana was starving and didn’t waste any time in dabbing some honey on the roll and taking a bite. The pain in her stomach receded a bit with each bite, but as she took the final one she realized it had been a trap. She had been so distracted with the food that she never heard the older Elaria entering the house until a dagger was at her throat.

“Who are you?” The voice somehow felt familiar, the very sound of it made Quiana’s body tense and her thoughts stumble to a halt in shock. While her own voice wouldn’t work, her tears definitely spoke as they spilled out and she found herself silently crying as she tried to twist her head to at least get a peek at the Elaria. It didn’t even matter as the blade nicked at her neck, there was no true thought process behind the action, only the desire to see the owner of that voice. “Seriously? You invade my daughter’s home and then think crying will save you?” There was a huff, the Elaria somewhat loosening her grip before she pushed Quiana forward towards the wall. “Then again you must have been desperate for food if that’s what you went for out of all the things she has in this house.” Which was fairly true considering all of the precious gemstones and rare artifacts that were in the display cases in the study and general living area. Not that Quiana had much time to ponder such a thing as the Elaria was still brandishing a dagger at her. Though now that the initial shock was wearing off it looked like both women were intent on studying each other, the Elaria frowning as she felt something familiar about an Elidae despite not remembering ever seeing one before today. “You…who are you?” She managed finally, her gaze dipping down to the familiar neck marking that was on both mother and daughter. The aggression from before felt weaker, her voice pained more than anything as she studied the stranger.

Quiana swallowed as she tried to find the words. There was no way that this wasn’t Ocyale. Even if she hadn’t said daughter earlier everything about the Elaria hinted to their connection. The facial structure, the familiar markings that looked closer to Quiana somehow more than expected with the forehead being the same while Noelani was slightly different with softer shapes while both Ocyale and Quiana had sharper lines there. The same lined markings, the same tilt to their eyes and the full lips that pressed into a confused line as the Elaria waited for the Elidae to answer. “You don’t know?” Quiana finally managed. “You really can’t remember anything, mother?” She had not imagined that word ever coming easily from her lips, but maybe it could trigger something within the Elaria’s blocked memories. It was that hope which prompted Quiana to spit the word from her mouth, as vile as it felt considering years of resentment that would take a long time to heal despite finally having the truth about her mother’s accident and the amnesia that had prompted her disappearance instead of simply a desire to abandon her daughter for some earthling man and his family.

“What do you mean?” The voice was sharp but the hand that held the dagger faltered, the blade nearly slipping from her grasp as she stared down Quiana. “Who are you to come into this house and start spouting nonsense?” She growled, her gaze narrowing as she straightened her stance just in case Quiana lashed out at her. Though Quiana wasn’t certain that was the true reason for the bold facade, there was no weapon in her hand and Ocyale held the dagger while Quiana simply stood there against the wall.

“It’s not nonsense! You simply can’t remember. I suppose grandmother and I weren’t enough for you to hold onto despite everything. Seriously, how could you forget?!” Quiana replied sharply, her own temper rising. Even if she could blame amnesia there was still something so infuriating about facing her own mother finally like this! There was no remorse, just a fierce desire to protect her daughter Noelani since apparently she had no memory of her eldest daughter who she was threatening with a dagger. Dammit. It was a good thing she actually liked Noelani since traveling together. It wasn’t as if they were super close but there was a connection there and she wasn’t about to curse out a whole family because of her mother acting like a fool in the moment. “Come on.” Quiana let out a sigh as she tried to push down her frustrations to speak logically instead of just yelling at Ocyale. “Isn’t it obvious? You know the Elidae only came from a group of Elaria who left Zinris and my markings are oddly similar to your own. I met Noelani already, I came from Oba with her and was waiting for her to return from picking up the children…my nieces and nephews apparently. That means grandmother is now a great-grandmother who has no idea since she thought you were dead this whole time. You went out to explore when I was just a youngling, but then never returned. I was raised by my grandmother while you lived your life happily here in Matori, finding a new family to replace us.” There was no gentle way to approach it, not since Quiana and Ocyale had surprised each other like this instead of meeting at the family dinner as originally planned. Quiana was determined to rip the bandaid off, her rising emotions getting the best of her instead of allowing her to keep her composure and gradually work Ocyale into the idea of being her mother.

“That’s ridiculous…right? You would have come all the way from the Kahi settlement since you aren’t an Elaria like me.” The dagger faltered again, the Elaria truly starting to see the Elidae and piece together her words. “I didn’t live in Zinris then. No wonder they couldn’t tell me anything before.” She mused quietly before letting out a moan as the dagger finally fell from her fingers, the Elaria rubbing at her forehead as if in sudden agony. “I really can’t remember…who are you?!” Even Quiana’s heart lurched at the sight of the woman as she bent over in obvious pain, her head surely splitting as she fought to try to reason with everything despite the fog of missing memories.

“I’m sorry…I…” Quiana’s words were cut off by a shout, a Matori man running in from the kitchen entrance to crouch near Ocyale. While he tended to the Elaria who was struggling with her revelation, Quiana found herself pressing back against the wall even more until the cold stone stabbed at her back. Despite her own pain though she didn’t want to move, didn’t want to look dangerous or even risk getting too close and overwhelming the Elaria even more with her presence. Though it looked like the damage had already been done thanks to her reckless outburst.

“Who are you? What did you do to her?” He asked, his amber gaze bright with worry as he tried to rub a reassuring hand along his wife’s back. Wavy dark blue hair, the same hair that Quiana recognized from Noelani, was tied in a short ponytail while the Matori himself was slender and almost frail looking in comparison to an Aishan warrior like her mother. Though at the moment it was Ocyale who looked like she was about to shatter into a million pieces, not Nakao.

“Stop, Nakao.” Ocyale managed weakly, sitting on the floor as she kept her hands on temples to try and stop the throbbing pain from exploding more. “She’s….family.” Nakao froze at the statement, his gaze widening as he looked between the Elidae and the Elaria to note the similarities. “I need a moment and definitely some tea first. After that though…we'll have a lot to discuss.”

“Let me get that tea then.” Nakao moved to pick up the dagger, placing it on the counter as he reached down to help Ocyale from the floor. “Let’s get you in a comfortable spot first though.” Quiana had to admit that the adoration between the pair was fairly obvious, the Matori was more than willing to do whatever it took to make certain Ocyale was alright before leaving her side to get boiling water. “Should I get a cup for you as well, miss?” He asked as he glanced over at Quiana now that Ocyale was resting on a chaise by the windows.

“Quiana.” Ocyale mentioned from her seat, her voice barely a murmur. The very mention of her name had Quiana spinning around to stare at the Elaria with surprise. “I don’t know…if it’s right, but the name just came to me.” Ocyale explained weakly, forcing a small smile despite her pain.

“Quiana…is my name.” Quiana managed before nodding towards Nakao. “I’ll take a cup, thank you.” She crossed her arms, wary and confused about what to do next. How had Ocyale remembered her name? After all this time she finally had something to recall? “I didn’t mean to disturb you like this.” She started quietly as she faced her mother. “Noelani had invited me to dinner and we were supposed to slowly work our way towards introducing me to you.”

“Ah.” Ocyale leaned back against the chaise, her fingers rubbing smaller circles along her temple as she tried to process everything. “That would have been nice, but I suppose On’os was not on my side today. You see I’m not really that much of an Aishan warrior anymore, I’ve adopted so many Matori customs since arriving here twenty years ago that it’s strange to even think of having Aishan connections. I’m…I’m sorry.” Her words wavered on the apology, her emotions caught in her voice as she swallowed against the tears that threatened to spill out of her own eyes. “This whole time…I had a daughter who I had forgotten. You must hate me.”

A loud noise echoed through the kitchen as a ceramic cup broke on the stone floor. “Dammit!” Nakao jumped to pick up the pieces, his own surprise showing as he tried to reduce how flustered he truly felt. It was fairly obvious though considering the broken cup and how his own hands shook as he tried to resume making the tea. “So Quiana is your daughter, Ocyale?”

“It seems so.” A weak laugh as she glanced over at her husband with some amusement despite the situation. “Don’t worry, I won’t be running away as long as you don’t hate me for this one. Though I’m certain Quiana has plenty of reasons to resent me…twenty years…I can’t believe it after all this time the past finally found me.”

“If it helps there’s no one back home except for my grandmother.” Quiana offered with a small smile, understanding the worry that had flashed across the Matori’s expression. It was one thing to find out about a lost daughter but what if that also meant there was a lover waiting for Ocyale after all this time? Though if a lover hadn’t found Ocyale by now then surely it was a sign that such a romance was over whenever Ocyale disappeared into the ocean all those years ago. “My bloom was given to Ocyale and only Ocyale. My grandmother raised me whenever she didn’t return.”

“Ah, I see.” Nakao coughed awkwardly, trying to cover up his own embarrassment since it was obvious where his mind had wandered at the reveal. “It’s a miracle that you showed up now. How did you even find us? Not saying it’s a bad thing…just surprising is all.”

“I know.” Quiana managed, answering the Matori since he was throwing out questions while Ocyale recovered from the initial shock still. “I saw Noelani in Kahi and the similarities…well there were a lot of questions that I wanted to ask after thinking more about her so I eventually came to Matori when I couldn’t leave it be. It just took a few years, that’s all.”

“Just a few years. Who knew our daughter’s trip to Kahi could result in so many changes? It definitely didn’t happen overnight but here we are.” Nakao actually laughed despite the situation. “Strange how small this world can be.” The kettle let out a shrill whistle as the water finally boiled, steam filling the area by the Matori as he slowly poured the hot water into cups for the three of them. “Hopefully you’re alright with peppermint. It’s good for headaches and stress in general.” He dropped bags of mixed herbs into the cups as he spoke, poking them down with a spoon before holding one out for Quiana.

“That’s fine by me.” Quiana held out her hands for the cup and nodded her thanks to the Matori. It was a lot easier to focus on the warmth radiating from the cup than it was to glance over to the corner of the room where Nakao had joined Ocyale on the chaise, supporting her while she slowly sipped at the tea to calm her aching head. “If you need more time then I can go explore the cove for a bit.” Quiana added finally after a few sips of her own tea, the liquid curling around in her stomach because of nerves. Perhaps that had not been the best idea all things considered. Still, she forced herself to keep the drink down and tightened her grip on the cup to soak up as much warmth as possible while waiting for a response. Maybe this was what it felt like to be a prey, all tense and prepared to dart away at any given moment. Quiana had come here for a confrontation but after seeing the Elaria who was her mother and the pain that her very presence had inflicted upon her it was hard to hold onto her resentment against Ocyale after all. Unless Ocyale was a terrific actor it did appear that her memory loss was real and causing her a lot of pain as she tried to grasp at anything from before her accident. Was it a mistake to come here then? Quiana had been wanting answers, but she never intended to actually hurt anyone like this. Guilt twisted her own insides as she watched the pair on the chaise, her green gaze drifting from the top of her cup to study them for a moment before she looked away once more. It looked like he truly loved her mother, as strange as the thought was for Quiana.

“Perhaps that would be best.” Began Nakao before Ocyale grabbed at his arm and shook her head in protest. The Matori frowned but simply shifted so that Ocyale could move from the chaise and approach Quiana. It was obvious that he was still worried, the Matori hovering just behind her shoulder as she continued towards the counter.

“You don’t have to leave, Quiana. I can handle this.” Ocyale insisted, placing her own cup on the counter so that she could reach for Quiana’s hands, a bold move considering how her own still shook. “I would love to find out more. Just give me some time to process, alright?” An attempt at a smile was made, her gaze still full of conflicting emotions as she studied the Elidae who had suddenly appeared and turned her whole life upside down. “I’m more of a treasure hunter than Aishan warrior now, but even this is a lot for me. Strange that chasing down dangerous treasures or fighting wild beasts or bandits is a lot less intimidating than….this. I don’t know if I can ever recall what I left behind, but you can help me to fill in the blanks. We’ll take it one story at a time unless my skull decides to try and break apart again.” It was hard to really fight the situation other than just accepting it as it was. Ocyale seemed sincere though, the Elaria no longer pushing Quiana away now that she was facing the facts. How else would Quiana have arrived here or even known her name? And those markings along with the story about a disappearance which coincided with her own rescue in Matori? A wistful expression crossed her features as she glanced at Nakao, determined to find her resolve to piece together the history that she had forgotten long ago. “I promise I won’t break, you can go ahead and prepare to meet the rest of the family. We’ll join you shortly for dinner.” Even though her husband appeared reluctant to leave, a gentle push and a kiss finally forced him through the door so that the mother and daughter could have some time alone to discuss everything.
