The desert was an intimidating place. Quiana had never seen a place with so much sand before. Everything was hot and dry, the exact opposite of the cove that she had been raised in. While there had been hot days at least she could take a swim in the ocean to make up for it. Out here though everything just felt so hopeless. The Elidae tugged her scarf back up over her head, blocking the glaring sun from her eyes and hoping to keep her strange appearance mostly to herself. Aishans may have been more common over here, but that was only true for mostly the Alkidike. An Elidae like herself would still stand out even as she went to browse the crowded markets, hoping for news of Noelani who was supposedly working out here on a dig. Whatever that entailed.

Xylia stood in front of the meeting place, hands on her hips as she stared down the two other hybrids who were waiting on her. “Cahira? Who is this?” The other girl seemed like she could be related to her friend, but she had no warning that some teen was going to be tagging along today when they went shopping for xaraan. Xylia didn’t know whether to be worried, curious or frustrated about the surprise and so she simply waited for an explanation from Cahira. She was already on edge after having an exciting day in the markets with Valek a bit ago, the hybrid hoping that nothing too exciting would happen on this particular visit.

Cahira had been planning on going by herself to the markets, ready to meet up with Xylia when a flustered Omari had delivered a grinning Ezili to her. This was why she shouldn’t stay at the academy every time she had plans! Cahira was so nervous about Xylia not committing to today’s plans if her youngest niece showed up with her, but what could she do? The girl had already terrified half of the students at Omari’s school with a prank that involved quite a bit of insects from Jahaur…she didn’t even know how the young teen got hold of those, and so the plans shifted from Omari keeping an eye on Ezili while she visited them in Oba to Cahira taking her out for the day while Omari dealt with the chaos she left behind. “I still can’t believe you did that.” She hissed despite knowing that she would have been a lot more amused by it on any other day, the timing was just terrible today! “Can you please not destroy the market while we go out with a friend today?” She asked Ezili before spotting Xylia and waving. “Ah, this is my niece Ezili, Xylia.” She explained with a sheepish grin. “My younger brother had some issues at his academy so he couldn’t watch her. That okay?”

Ezili rolled her eyes. Out of all her aunts and uncles, she thought Cahira would at least be more fun about things! Then again her aunt seemed a bit on edge, almost like she had been ready to run away this morning until Ezili was dragged downstairs to breakfast by Omari. It had just been a few insects…huge crawly things that she had picked up from a merchant who had promised her they were harmless, just terrifying to look at. It had been worth it to shock some of those divas, a trio of noble girls, who were at his academy and had said some rather nasty things to some of the scholarship students and to even Ezili when she stood up for them. Ezili was too proud to admit it bothered her, but she also couldn’t simply sit around and not unleash something on them.
“I’m old enough to wander around by myself.” Ezili protested with a frown even as the sight of the strange hybrid waiting on Cahira caught her interest. Were those tattoos or actual markings? Hmm. “But I would like to browse the markets and see some xaraan. So if it’s alright, I’ll tag along.” It felt much better to present it that way, as if Ezili was wanting to tag along and not because she was in trouble over a prank.

Quiana passed some coin to the merchant, picking up a buttered roll to eat, before a flash of teal caught her attention. Could that be? The Elidae’s gaze lit up with interest but then the crowd surged around her again and she nearly lost her roll. Ugh, this is why I don’t like earthling cities. Now where did they go? Her mouth pressed into a determined line as she tried to work her way through the crowd to try and find whoever that was. Chances were that it probably wasn’t Noelani, but Quiana at least had to check!

“I see.” Xylia’s bi-colored gaze skimmed over the younger girl before she gave a slight shrug. “We’re already here so we may as well. We’re already at the edge of the market, but you said you had an idea of someone who breeds xaraan that we can work with?” What harm could one teen do? She glanced over at Ezili thoughtfully before shoving such worries aside. She seemed innocent enough, almost like one of those delicate ladies with her long teal hair decorated in gemstone flowers and flowing silk skirts that she wore today. If anything Xylia was more nervous about the growing crowds as the morning market started to pick up. She didn’t like being surrounded by so many people all at once and was ready to move somewhere more open.

Relief crossed Cahira’s features and she nodded. “I do.” She shot Ezili one more concerned look before gesturing for the pair to follow her away from the market, closer towards the edge of the city where the desert began. There were race tracks out here, xaraan racing being popular, and it was here that Cahira knew there was a breeder.

Alright, so they were actually doing this. Ezili bounced along after Cahira with Xylia trailing next to her. As fun as it would be to explore the crowded market, she also knew that a xaraan would be a lot more fun. “Do you think I could get a xaraan as well? Think they’ll do okay in Tale?” She asked, only pausing for a moment to pick up a necklace from a merchant and tossing a coin her way for the trinket. It was nice, a pretty moon that made her think of their companion for the day. How long had Cahira been hiding such a badass looking friend? Those dark leathers, those markings and bi-colored eyes…everything about her seemed so intriguing if not a bit intimidating, especially when you noticed the swords hanging at her sides.

“A girl was just here with darker teal hair.” Advised the merchant, handing a bracelet over to Quiana. “So had pretty bright green eyes as well…oh wait!” The merchant shrugged, happy to take more coin once the strange Aishan ran away in the direction she had pointed. She had wanted to say the girl didn’t look like she had Aishan blood, but maybe it didn’t matter? As the merchant simply went back to business Quiana had already placed the beaded bracelet around her wrist, the Elidae rushing to try and catch up with the group that was heading further and further away from the markets. She didn’t know exactly why, but she had a gut feeling that this was her one chance to try and locate Noelani.

“A xaraan in Tale?” Xylia mused, actually listening to the niece who Cahira had brought along. She saw some similar features between them that was interesting, the darker Oban skin, slightly curved nose and high cheekbones that they must have gotten from their mothers, and even their grace as they moved forward seemed similar. Other than that Ezili had features that resembled an oasis bathed in moonlight while Cahira was bright and fiery like a flame dancing under the sun. A small smile lingered on her lips at the comparison before she focused again. “I would think that a xaraan would be happier in a place where it could run. They do enjoy racing around.”

“Yeah, you may want to ask your papa about a kinfa though.” Replied Cahira as she thought about Ezili’s question. “A xaraan is perfect out here in Oba, even in Matori, but I’m not certain about the deep forests. If you lived more in Sauti then perhaps but not with so many trees in the way like what your home has.”

“Hmm, flying does sound cool.” Ezili nodded, not as displeased by the offer. If she could convince her papa to let her get a kinfa then she could get around the forest so much easier! Well, not exactly but there was a place by the waterfalls where most of the rangers flew in and out of the forest before walking the rest of the way home. Less trees to block their flying mounts and it was easier to throw off any tracks by that particular area with the mists constantly rising from the crashing waters.

“I saw a group of women heading out that way, towards the xaraan tracks.” A man advised before pausing. “I would be careful though, I think someone else was headed out that way but they were not so pleasant looking.” Quiana frowned but nodded as she continued forward. Xaraan racing? What type of beasts were those? She vaguely remembered her grandmother talking about Oban beasts but it was something like…jana…janarim? Those big scaled mounts had been impressive apparently, enough that even her grandmother’s companion had wanted one before. Still, that was not the most important concern at the moment. Was there going to be trouble up ahead? Even if it wasn’t Noelani that she was chasing, Quiana didn’t like the sound of anyone getting ambushed. It would be nice to burn some energy, a rare decision for the usually laid back Elidae, but she had plenty of stress and a lot of pent-up feelings about being on a ship and traveling so far away like this.

Xylia nodded. “A kinfa definitely would be more fitting for Tale. They’re good lifelong companions, as long as you earn their respect and treat them properly.” She advised, the hybrid distracted by her conversation and not noticing the shift in the crowd behind them. It wasn’t as if she had been to this particular area in a while and she normally didn’t roam around in daylight hours like this so she truly didn’t expect a group of men to be heading this way, ready to confront the vigilante who had recently ruined a good smuggler’s ship.

“Hear that?” Cahira looked pointedly towards her niece. “It’ll be hard work and earning respect is no joke.” She knew Ezili was a trickster, a really sneaky sort and it made her worried. Would she be able to raise a kinfa without also training it to become a menace? She loved her nieces and nephews, truly, but even Cahira acknowledged how rambunctious the group of younger teens could be.
