Prentice – Class Affinity Solo Guardian
The air was tense in the little hut, though only one irritated soul resided within, for the time being anyway. Faenna sat fuming, her arms crossed tightly while one leg ceaselessly bounced impatiently. She knew she was in trouble, and she also knew it was a severe overreaction on the part of the woman she was in trouble with. Glina was a few years older, but they had pretty much grown up together. When Glina hit her teens though, she had turned into such a stick in the mud. Faenna had merely attempted to pull her buddy back out of the mud! It had been hilarious!
Of course, it really only worked out if the one being pranked also found it hilarious. Apparently, she had picked the wrong target that day. Now she was just waiting to sit through another lecture from some old crone about how she’s dishonoring her family and clan and what a huge disappointment she was to her mothers and blah blah blah. She would rather get the lecture over with than sit in here alone, watching a spider slowly spin out a web at the peak of the ceiling.
A surprisingly soft knock interrupted her thoughts, dark eyes snapping over to stare at the door. “Yeah, yeah. I’m ready for you,” she huffed, trying to keep her irritation from surging again. While the lectures were annoying, she did give consideration to her mothers’ reactions. She really did not want them disappointed with her.. and arguing with her elders was one way to accomplish that.
“Faenna. How are you doing in here?”
Faenna could not help blinking with surprise. Glina? “You’re not who I expected to see,” she said without thinking.
Glina snorted and shook her head. “Well, here I am. Of course, I had to clean up first.” She glared pointedly and sat down on one of the other pillows across from Faenna. “Remember? Because someone thought it would be funny to give me a trick mug of raspberry juice that stained my whole front!”
Faenna could only hold back for a second before laughing. “Yeah. That was pretty funny. I was worried that you would notice the mug was different before trying to drink.”
“Faenna, my mother made me those clothes! Now they’re stained forever!” Glina growled sharply.
Faenna rolled her eyes. “Really now. Your mother makes all of your clothes, and you most certainly can get raspberry stains out. Don’t you know how to do your own laundry?” Her grin turned sarcastic. “Surely your mother is already hard at work cleaning it for you.” She watched Glina’s face darken with heat. ’Nailed it.’ “Now come on, what’s going on. You used to love my pranks.”
Glina’s nostrils flared slightly, taking a calming breath to ease her voice. “I grew up, Faenna. All of us grew up, except for you.” She stood and started pacing. “We are not younglings anymore! It is time to take on responsibilities and roles for bettering the community, and the rest of us are stepping up. You? You just keep on playing games and tricks like the future as though the future of our clan does not matter to you!”
Faenna’s brow rose with shock. “Are you seriously questioning me on my devotion to the community?” she gasped out. “What, you think I just sit around contributing nothing? Do you really think I don’t care?”
“It sure doesn’t look like it! You need to do something with your life. Something more than playing and slacking around all day.” Glina snapped. Thin lips pressed tightly, Glina turned away and took another deep breath. “It’s time for you to grow up.”
After a long moment, Faenna stood up with her nails digging into her palms. “That’s really what you think of me? You think I just go around acting like I’m still a kid without a care in the world?” She stepped forward and shook her head. “We all spent years training for coming of age. We went through lessons about etiquette and making food and surviving in the wilderness. We all learn early on how to fight, what weapons are, and how dangerous the world is. We are taught how to defend ourselves, and how to keep everyone else away for the sake of Azehra, for Aisha. You and I both know there’s more to life than just surviving though.”
Glina turned back. “Alright, then tell me. Tell me what all this playing around is getting you. How is it going to give you purpose once we are old enough? We all have our duties to fulfill in this life, but I still only see you playing around. How is playing tricks on others bettering our lives?” Her eyes narrowed firmly. “What sort of example are you setting for Odina and Seiong?”
Faenna sighed and held out her arms in a plaintive gesture. “If I explain it, will you bother trying to listen and understand? Can you be bothered to listen to a side of life that you have clearly forgotten about?”
Glina rolled her eyes. “If you will put aside the ridiculous dramatization that you are currently giving me, then yes, of course I am listening.”
With a deep inhale, Faenna closed her eyes and clasped her hands over her heart. It looked like she was preparing to belt out a heartfelt plea. Something serious and carrying a boundless weight that would create an impactful epiphany with a ripple effect large enough to change the ways of the world…. Instead, Faenna’s lips parted with an absurd grin. “It’s called fun!” she said with a wave of her arms. “Remember? Fun? That thing that keeps people from going crazy with all the seriousness going on around them? We can’t just go around being stern and stiff all day long. It’s bad for your back. Look at those crabby old hags hunched over from years of feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders. They’re grouchy and ornery and have no concept of smiling. Why? Because they weren’t allowed to have fun. They lived through wars so that we could have fun and enjoy our lives. What’s the point of surviving if you can’t also live? Aisha gave us life, and I can’t believe she did it just to watch us drag our feet around with the drudgery of merely existing. After a long day of working in the field or training on the grounds, what better thing is there than letting yourself laugh and relax? Being serious all the time is exhausting! Exhausting, Glina! We need to take time to remember we are not puppets following orders. Even the radaku adults play around now and then. Are we not better, more advanced, than the animals we raise? There are times for being serious, and times for letting go. I am just the reminder to everyone who forgets to let go. It keeps everyone sane.”
Glina’s eyes had glassed over, slowly blinking at Faenna’s “impassioned” speech. “You.. you really believe all that.” After a long moment, Glina seemed to snap back to reality. She shook out her body and groaned. “Fine. I guess.. I suppose I can see the benefit that relaxing has on the sisters and cousins. Everyone needs time to themselves every now and then. I think they would appreciate efforts going to relaxation with less frustrating side effects though. How is having to clean my clothes relaxing for me?”
Faenna grinned playfully. “Oh, that was for your mother. I know she finds laundry quite soothing whereas you hate it, so it gives her space from you.”
Glina took a step back. “Faenna!”
“I’m kidding!” Faenna sat back down with a laugh. “Well, mostly kidding. You’ve gotta remember that the material things aren’t that big of a deal. So what if your shirt gets messy? What did freaking out accomplish for you? The shirt didn’t get clean from you shouting at me. Instead of freaking out about it, you just clean it and put on another shirt. That’s what you needed to learn.”
Glina paused for a moment, her frown softening the slightest bit. “Okay.. as loath as I am to admit it, you have a point. I did not need to get so worked up over a shirt that is already being cleaned.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Being cleaned by my mother who happens to love having me around, thank you very much.”
Faenna chuckled and waved her hands. “I know, I know. As much of a stiff as you’ve become.. I love having you around, too.”
Glina’s expression softened further. “Thanks, Faenna… I love you, too.” She sat back down as well and sighed. “I am curious though. You never mentioned what it is you plan to do for yourself when you end up moving on your own.”
Faenna grinned. “Oh, mima is teaching me how to ride mounts like she does. I just got back from the earthling lands to look for something exotic to ride! I feel like I can best contribute and help with the defenses with a good beast at my side. I bet I can teach it some really cute tricks to perform, too. Can’t have a good beast that doesn’t have the same sense of relaxing the community as I do.”
Glina’s expression glazed over once again. “All that….. All that talk about fun, and now you tell me you already know the path you wish to follow? Why did you not start with that? And don’t you dare say-!”
Faenna laughed as she bolted out of the hut. “Because it was fun!”

Prentice- Growth Quest Solo Blade
Part of Faenna wondered if she was doing the right thing. Another part of her wondered why she hadn’t done it sooner.
Moving away from home… She had loved traveling and seeing the limited earthling lands that she had been able to reach, and there were other Aishan lands to visit and explore that she had yet to see. It was such a thrilling concept that there was so much out there for someone to discover and learn from. Yet, when she looked around from the dock of Chiume’s beach, she felt a pang in her belly. Aside from a few trips to Belrea, she had never really traveled alone. Also, she had always had the comfort of knowing that there would soon be a return trip home. This time, she had it set in her mind to really explore the lands around her. Her next trip home would be long in coming. As much as she loved exploring, she did also love being close with her family and friends. There was something special about the security that came with a loving social circle that one could count on to be there. The idea of giving that up...
A recent discussion about her own values had set her to thinking. As much as she loved her homelands, she felt so restricted when she was stuck to Chiume and Chibale. She wanted to travel, and she also wanted to stop depending so much on her family. She adored her mothers and sisters, of course. There was no question about that. Yet, really, what example did she want to set for young Odina and Seiong, and for the other younglings around her? Didn’t she want them to be brave and bold? Didn’t she want them to believe that they can strive to do whatever makes them happy? For herself… did she not want to be more than one of Danika and Vermina’s daughters?
The answers to all of those questions were obvious to her. She wanted to find more fun in the world. More inspiration. More strength. She knew that if she limited herself to going only where her family went, then she was going to miss out on so much that the world had to offer! Home could only satisfy so much when one bore a wandering spirit. There was a janarim pup with her name on it waiting for her in Oba, and that was going to be her first step. Training with it and other janarim so that she could be the guardian she wanted to be.
Yes, Faenna knew what she wanted… She had a basic plan in mind, and she had the blessings of her mothers to follow her dreams. She had said her farewells to family and friends and Azehra. She had her bag packed until it was about ready to burst. Most of all, she had the will and the determination to step forward into unknown territory. She was ready. That was enough to make her smile as she stepped off from the dock and onto the boat that would take her to Matori. From there, she would find a route across the land to get into Oba and begin her new life.
She watched Chiume fade into the horizon and felt that pang again. Her hand reached into one of the pockets of her pack and pulled out a golden crystal that she had gotten on a trip with her twin. She looked the smooth surface over for a moment before clasping it firmly in her fist with a comforted smile. While she was forging her own path as an individual, she still did it as a proud Alkidike. Even if she wasn’t on Chuime or Chibale, she knew that the love of the goddesses and her family would follow her.
She wasn’t losing home.. She was gaining the world.

Conclusion: Faenna has begun her journey to find herself in the world. The age of a carefree youngling is well behind her, and she is eager to take up the mantle of her own version of official adulthood.
