Mero

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Race: 1/2 Wind 1/4 Leaf 1/4 Water
Class: Healer (Midwife)
Significant Other: N/A
Sexuality:
Parents: Freya (Wind) x ???
Children: None

Romantic Status: Single
Partner(s): N/A

3 Base Traits: Nurturing, Vain, Vindictive
Personality: Mero takes her role as 'big sister' very seriously. She's always been one to put the needs of others before her own, especially the little ones. While not one to easily buckle under their big, sweet eyes she has been known to sneak out a few treats from time to time just to get some smiles. There's little she loves more than encouraging others to do their best, even if it can come across as condescending on accident simply because she'll use the same tone on adults as she does children. In a round about way whenever Mero becomes stress it's decompressing just being able to do laundry, cook, etc. for other people because it takes her mind off her own worries.

A lot of Mero's self confidence comes in the form of her physical beauty. If asked she would say it doesn't matter, but in all actuality what people have to say about her means the world. She spends a great deal of time maintaining a strict beauty regime and while she isn't afraid to get dirty with her work, Mero will make time to get her appearance in order before doing anything else. All of her clothing must be properly mended, washed and free of stains. Beauty sleep is important as is maintaining a proper diet and exercise routine. She's known her entire life that her unique appearance draws attention whether she likes it or not. For every slur tossed her way Mero's received twice as many compliments and she prefers to keep it that way!

Most of the time Mero is a kind, big sister sort of gal, but when angered she's a beast. It takes a lot to push her to that point, but once the line has been crossed she will do everything in her power to make the other party suffer. The telltale sign is usually her volume; normally she's open and cheerful but every moment she grows quiet is one you need to beware. (i.e. if someone teases her a few times because of her strange hair that's one thing, but the moment they try to dye it she'll start to plan. She's been caught putting mixtures in another girls hair care products before that caused her hair to fall out and when asked about it Mero simply replied "blue hair is better than no hair." with a smug grin. ) She's meticulous and has been known to get pretty creative with her 'punishments'.

History

Mero is the only daughter born to an aging windling midwife. Her mother, affectionately known as Mama Freya, made a name for herself by spending much of her life caring for the local children while their parents were busy working and delivering their babies when called. She married young to a man from the ice tribe, but after a number years he passed away quietly in his sleep. Her reputation as a sweet, motherly figure earned her the respect of the village and her eagerness to help any guardian in need gave her the moniker of 'mother' herself. The community, in turn, helped Mama Freya as much as they could by donating extra meats and material whenever it was available. For years it seemed as if the spinster was simply content to live her life in peace until villagers started to notice that Freya had grown rather large.

Mero's conception was something of a mystery. Freya's husband had passed away many years ago and village gossip pegged her well beyond child bearing age! And yet, there she was, heavy with child! So when the babe was born a great commotion came over the little Sauti village. The child was obviously mixed, but with what? And who was the father? Surely she would want someone to know so they could track him down! And yet, Freya just smiled softly and said this child was something she had wanted, not him. The infant was her blessing and he needn't be bothered.

Mero grew up deep within the bosom of windling culture. She learned the value of hard work early in life and that without community, especially in such an unforgiving landscape, you had nothing. Of course she faced her face share of criticism. While hybrids were becoming more common in smaller villages she was still a minority, and one that wasn't treated as kindly by some as others.

"At least my dad's from Zena so I know where my blood comes from."

"Your mom's not as homely as she acts, is she? Seems like she gets around just fine-"

As questions about her father mounted, Mero become more and more insistent. Who was he? Where was he from? What did he look like? For the most part Freya would brush off the questions with platitudes like 'I'll tell you when you're older' and 'what does it matter? You should focus on what you have instead of what isn't here'. It bothers her to this day, but seeing as there isn't much she can do when her mother is so adamant on keeping that information locked away Mero has decided to focus on the here and now.

In her little village Mero grew to know love and responsibility. After a while the girls striking looks came to be as commonplace as the rising sun and she started to take a more proactive role with her mother's duties. As Freya aged it became apparent that she could no longer keep up with the village children on her own so Mero has come to help out however she can, gaining a reputation for being a "Big Sis" which helped to boost her confidence. It's a lot of work and while it can certainly get frustrating from time to time she's happy enough to help.

Class Choice - Healer (Midwife)

Growing up under the care of a midwife had shaped Mero in ways she was only just now becoming aware of. The way she tenderly held newborns as if it were an innate skill, her ability to tell at a glance if a woman was expecting or not, the way she could handle a group of children with almost militaristic precision...Freya had taught her daughter well without actually needing to teach her at all.

Freya herself had always had a soft spot for hybrid children. Her own marriage to an iceling in her youth had secured it. Whenever a hybrid was born in their sleepy little village the babe instantly became the talk of gossip and more often than not ‘disappeared’ weeks later along with its mother. The fact that many young women in their village felt the need to flee out of pure shame instead of simply leaning on the community and raising her child in peace was disappointing. Mero had bore witness to more mothers hastily covering up their deeds the day of birth than she’d ever cared to see. Whether the child was born out of infidelity or a night of passion didn’t seem to matter; it was always looked down upon as something ‘lesser’. Something that needed to be hidden away or disposed of.

To Mero there was nothing greater in this world than the act of childbirth. Women who could survive in the harsh landscape that was Sauti while carrying life inside of them were nothing short of legendary. They faced hardship after hardship and in the end were rewarded with hours of unforgiving pain. And then what? A child latched to their hip, draining the very life out of them, and yet their smiles rarely wavered. Even when she’d seen women at their absolute breaking point she’d yet to see one who was ready to throw her child to the sermals. And so to have that love shunned, even despised, broke her. Fear of having a hybrid child after a night of pure passionate love made expectant mothers do horrible things and Mero had nothing but sympathy for them. The amount of cases her mother had been called to for a mother who had bled out trying to hide her shame was horrifying. If they had proper treatment, a family who loved them, or just support….How many of these women would have to die?

She’d decided early on that she wanted to take after her mother. Freya had done marvelous work for the community over the years, but she’d already been on the older side when her daughter was born. Now that her hair was no longer blonde but rather a soft grey Mero knew that her time was coming. A younger midwife had taken residence in the village some few years ago, alongside a proper healer, and while they did marvelous work it was oftentimes more clinical than her mother’s gentle touch. They asked question after question, digging where they shouldn’t, and at the end of it their patient was worn thin. Of course they had their answers, but as her mother put it, they hadn’t made a connection. Even now, years after she’d stopped practicing, Freya was still woken in the middle of the night to attend a birth. Yet, even though she couldn’t perform it all by herself, Mero was right there by her side. Even though her mother took the reins Mero could still help with cleaning and prep work, as well as to watch any children the mother may have had or just to keep her partner sane. It was the little things that made it so much more personable. Of course, when things didn’t work out properly, Mero would take off in the middle of the night to fetch the healer. Naturally he would have some cross things to say to the pair, but Freya took it in stride.

“If they wanted cold fingers they would have dug you out of the lake.”

Mero couldn’t help beaming everytime that man’s cheeks fluffed and his skin would flush with heat. It made her all the more proud to be Freya’s daughter on nights like that. And yet, seeing the way her mother had started to wilt was eye opening. If she wanted to be a midwife like her then Mero would need to amp up her studies and soon. Her magic was growing day by day, but it was only as good as her teachings. Having Freya’s first hand tutelage was beyond helpful, but a stronger education...Well, it called to Mero.

What would she be able to do if she only had the knowledge of Zena? Or Tale? Maybe even Belrea? If she could get her brain around the more intensive subjects then she could help so many families…

And maybe, just maybe, save a few children from being put into care homes. And that was what was most important, wasn’t it? Being able to provide not only proper physical healing but that of the mind and soul as well? If anyone could do it then she could. After all, who knew better what it was like to be born into a hybrid stigmatizing society than a hybrid herself?

They don’t act like that in the bigger cities. You’ll see, things are better there!

If she could just get out while her mother was able to care for herself then maybe, just maybe, she would stand a chance. She just needed to find a way to do it first...

Prentice Solo 1

It was a lush, beautiful day when Mero got the knock at her door. The sound itself wasn’t so much an oddity as was the silence that came after. Usually the only ones that knocked were the children when something was wrong (i.e. one needed a snack, someone picked a fight, etc) or a guardian stopping by to pick up their offspring. Any client of her mother’s would have surely seen the older windling out in the yard, tending to the wash, so broom still in hand Mero made her way to the door.

“Periru?” What Mero hadn’t expected was to see the brawny windling standing on her stoop. Like most of the villagers Periru was as thick as he was tall and while not traditionally handsome he had earned his way into the hearts of girls across the village. Most days he was out with the capramel herds, trailing along with his brothers, but today he was holding a bouquet of wild...weeds?

Surely those aren’t for me….Oh goddess, I think they are. Bergchi help her.

“G-good morning, Mero. You’re looking as lovely as ever.” His cheeks flushed a deep ember and the hulking mass of a boy shifted from foot to foot. When the sunlight caught his hair just right it looked like starlight, which had been one of the things Mero had told him to nab his interest months ago. At the time he was being chased by multiple girls and not to be outdone Mero had pulled out all the stops to catch him. She’d flirted, baked him sweet treats, volunteered to help cook when his mother fell ill...And just as quickly, she’d started talking to Kuno and dropped him like a hot stone.

Oh, honestly. Couldn’t he take a hint?

“That’s so sweet of you to say~ And look at you, you’ve grown at least a foot since the last time I saw you.” Instead of reaching out to put her hand on his arm, as she usually did, Mero kept her broom gently held between them. It was subtle, but a way to create distance all the same. Go away, you big dumbass. She smiled sweetly despite the near venomous tone of her thoughts. “What brings you all this way? I thought for sure you’d be out in the countryside by now, tending to the herd.”

“I-I-I was, but I heard...Well, you haven’t been answering my letters and I saw you a few days ago, in the village, with someone else…” Ah, that must have been when Kuno came to visit. You should have taken that as a hint and left me alone. “I thought…” He held the bouquet up to her and seemed to steal his spine. “If my intentions weren’t clear before I thought I’d make them known now. I love you, Mero, and I would very much like you to be mine!”

Really, he was a sweetheart. For the boy to come all this way just to confess to her, knowing full well he was on display in front of a gaggle of judgemental children and her own mother...Well, she supposed in a way it was admirable. Still….Mero sighed and looked up at him sympathetically. “Oh, Periru...I just don’t love you.”

“You...you don’t?”

“No, I don’t.” Her tone was kind and compassionate, despite the side of her that wanted to shoo him away with her broom like a meddlesome pest. Honestly, what kind of dense idiot didn’t take a hint? She hadn’t written back to him in weeks, had dropped all contact and for what? For him to show up at her house with weeds?! Who the hell would want this?!

When he murmured something under his breath she leaned in a little and with a furrowed brow asked him to speak up. In an instant the vibe changed completely. His emotions turned bitter and that sweet smile turned into a sour scowl.

“I said my brothers were right. Everyone told me you were nothing, but a whore and I should have listened to them. How many people have you kept strung along like this?! I-I-I bet if I walked into your house right now I’d find a stack of letters from at least...at least twenty men!” His voice was growing progressively louder and Mero took a step back, holding the broom much more defensively now. Periru slammed the bouquet down at her feet. “Does he know about you? That guy you were traipsing about with last night? Or does he even care? Maybe you did more for him than you’ve done for me-”

“Stop it! It’s not like that-”

“Yeah, and how do I know that? Was I just not good enough for you? Or do you just prefer your own kind?” He snarled. With one final scathing look the hulking mass of a teenager turned away from Mero and stomped down the hill, past a gaggle of gawking children and her pensive mother. Once he was out of sight Freya looked up the hill with a little sigh.

This...was surely going to be the start of something terrible.

Growth Solo

[Mero has always wanted to continue her studies in a larger settlement, but lacked motivation. At first she blamed it on funding, since she's grown up poor, and it's always been one thing or the other keeping her back. Now that her reputation is in tatters her mother's advice has finally spurned her to head north, to Zena! She's hoping to find a tutor to help her expand the knowledge she needs to become a midwife and to find a fresh start away from small town life.]

“I don’t see why you’re moping, you did this to yourself.” Freya calmly broke the silence that had hung around their home all evening. For once all of the children had gone home with their guardians and the pair were left to tidy up in peace. It may have made for an enjoyable night if the week had gone better for Mero.

Periru, evidently, had talked to his friends about the incident the other day and now the entire village had it out for her. There wasn’t anywhere Mero could go that she wasn’t being whispered about.

”..not really that much of a surprise...doesn’t even know who her father is...Freya isn’t an innocent, either, so how else was the daughter supposed to turn out?....”

It was beyond frustrating! What did it matter who she talked to?! It wasn’t like she’d even so much as kissed any of them, let alone half of the things that were being said about her...The way the village looked at her now was just...demoralizing. She’d worked so hard to build up a reputation as a capable midwife and a hard worker despite everything they thought a hybrid to. Now it was in tatters because of one stupid reject! When I see him I’m going to put my hands around his throat and-

“I can pout all I want.” She snapped, jabbing her needlework with a little too much force. “Thanks to Periru I lost my job with the cobbler and now I can’t even be trusted to be in a shop with a boy lest I get too hands on.” Mero rammed the needle through the fabric over and over again with gusto. Her little flowers may look delicate, but oh, the thought behind them was so much more sinister. Maybe she should put the needles in his tea? Surely there was a spell out there to cause an illusion that would make them look like leaves instead…”I have half a mind just to pack up and leave! Just...just grab a bag, throw as much as I can into it and go to Zena, just like Kuno said! I...well, I could stay with his family at the sanctuary and take lessons somewhere. Surely I can exchange cooking and cleaning for a place to sleep, right? Big place like that probably needs it! Rich people can’t do a damn thing for themselves- Ow!” Yelping, Mero pulled her finger up and frowned when a little bubble of blood beaded up.

Freya walked across the living room and sat down next to her excitable daughter. The kinder woman reached across Mero’s lap, gently prying the cross stitch from her lap and taking it into her own, lest the teen do more damage to her fingers. “Then maybe that’s what you should do.” She said with a smile. “You won’t get any further with your studies here...and that sweet young man might have the right connections, so long as you don’t play your games with him.” Her smile faltered a little there and Freya sighed, showing her true age in that moment. “I want to see you happy, Mero, and right now...staying here will only bring you misery. They won’t stop talking, not now and not ever, so the best you can do is carve out a path for yourself. If I give you all the gold I’ve got saved up-”

“Mother, you can’t! You need that for the winter-”

“I’ll be fine; trust me. One person only needs so much to make due. With all that gold you should be able to get into some kind of academy or at least pay for a suitable teacher. Learn all you can and one day, come by to show me. Just don’t forget to write~ Oh, and have Kuno sent some more of that tea. It does wonders on my aching bones.”

“...Alright then, that’s what I’ll do.” She’d always wanted to see Zena, had talked about it at length with Kuno in their letters, and now...now she was finally getting the chance! Hopefully Kuno wasn’t just all talk about letting her stay; if she could just get a few nights then she would worry about the rest later. A fresh start, away from this stupid little village… It was going to be wonderful!
