There are many superstitions and beliefs in Tendaji, often originating from the culture and gods of each individual region. Wherever one goes, they might find a new routine or practice based on the region they are in. However, there seems to be one thing that all Tendaji residents believe in - the power and beauty of a meteor shower.
The rare celestial event is seen as a blessing, and this one just so happens to have appeared right when the New Year began. Oh what luck and what a great omen - this must be a sign of good fortune for the year to come.
[ How does your character react to the meteor shower that is lighting up the sky? How do they see this omen impacting their life and year to come? Explore the thoughts and experience either alone or with a friend. ]

While this was far from the first, or event the worst, injury Mero had even sustained it still stung never the less. She'd been in charge of a hoard of little ankle biters today and they all wanted to travel down to the ravine for a swim. Of course she'd resisted at first; as any good care giver would. However, after hours of begging and pleading she eventually gave in just for the hope of some quiet time.
Then one little girl just had to slip going down a rock, Mero grabbed her and naturally she'd fallen in the child's place. Now one of the bones in her forearm was broke and her left arm was tucked close to her chest in a sling. She wanted to be mad, really she did, but seeing as the entire gaggle of children had been brought to instant hysterics she couldn't find it in her to get angry. After a few of the older ones ran off for a healer and Mero had been tended to she'd still had chores to do. Her mother offered to help, but Mero was too stubborn for that.
Which is precisely why she was still lugging a satchel of flour through the market as the sun had already started to set.

A large raptrix with shades of copper throughout his fur slunk through the main street with his nose to the ground. His path was more of a zigzag than any form of straight. He was searching for a particular scent, but he was also just overwhelmed with the plethora of new scents that begged to be explored. Of course, someone there was being a spoiled sport and not letting him roam everywhere...
"Go on, Bubs. The inn. The inn." Kuno was following at the raptrix's side and encouraging the excited beast forward. His parents were off.. somewhere.. taking care of old business. How could he not take advantage of the opportunity? Sure they had told him that he should stay home until they got back, but could they blame him for assuming it was a suggestion rather than an order?
..Okay, maybe they could 100% blame him, but that would come later. For now, he was counting on Bubs to sniff out that intriguing young lady he had been exchanging letters with. He had arrived much later than he had intended, so he was more focused on finding a place to stay. At the least, Bubs might find her scent now and they could return in the morn- "Hey!" he yelped when the raptrix suddenly bolted forward with a bark. Watching the beast dart around a corner, he sighed and let his head fall back to give the sky a 'why me?' gesture. That was when he saw something streak across the sky. It was faint, but he had definitely seen it! First, get Bubs; then he could gawk at the sky.
Bubs had caught the scent and wasn't going to waste time seeking out the source! Heavy paws thundered along the ground and skid to a halt just shy of knocking Mero over. His nose was instantly pressing against her cheek and hair, tail wagging wildly with pride. He'd found it!

If she'd had a little more rest Mero might have been a little more aware of the great beast rumbling her way, but as it stood she simply passed off the sound. Without the raptrix in sight she just assumed it was a vendor with a cart and thus took her sweet time walking home. Slowly, though, her ears began to perk and curiosity took over. That sound was awfully loud and it kept getting closer...By the time she turned around to look the raptrix was nearly ontop of her and she let out a surprised squeal. She stumbled backwards, but that didn't seem to deter him. Her heart leapt into her throat as the beast pressed it's nose against her cheek and....
Copper fur? Wasn't that...? "Bubs?" No, surely it couldn't be! And yet, the raptrix matched the description Kuno had given and she couldn't think of another reason why one would be in her sleepy little village. Hesitantly she shifted the strap of her satchel so that it rested on the ground at her feet. With her arm now free she reached up to cautiously pat the large canine. "Where's your master, hmm?"

Bubs gave Mero a big canine smile when she acknowledged him, wings giving a light flutter as well. Head cocking when she spoke, he playfully licked Mero's cheek before remembering why he had been seeking this person out. His butt smacked down, flashing tail stirring up all sorts of dust as he threw back his head to howl up at the sky and announce that he had been successful in his hunt.
By the time Kuno followed around the corner, Bubs was sitting and blocking the view of his company. With a sigh of relief, he moved into a quick jog. "There's no inn here, you goof. I'm pretty sure it's the other way." He reached out to pat Bubs' shoulder. "Maybe we'll just camp outside tonight anyway and watch the- Mero!" A pleased smile that was perhaps a little too similar to Bubs' from earlier, just innocent delight, shone brightly when he realized who was standing there. He threw up his arms to properly announce their presence. "We're here!" Just as quickly, his excitement turned into concern at the sight of the sling around Mero's arm. "Are you okay? ...Tick off another sermal?"

Cautious or not she couldn't help a little fluttering at seeing how happy Bubs was just to be around her. She'd never really gotten to spend much time around animals save for the few herds of capramel shepards ushered past. When he licked her, however, she felt her whole body shiver and the teenager let out an 'eww!' before curling her lip in disgust. Okay, so maybe raptrix weren't as majestic as she'd originally thought. Then all of a sudden he was howling and she was raising her hand, trying to quiet him because they had to be drawing attention and-
"Kuno!" She took a half step back to take in the sight, and her surprise turned to a little frown. "Why are you here? Did you run away from home again? Your mother's going to string you up." She knew enough about her through his letter's to know that him being here wasn't going to be seen as anything good. Still, it was hard not to smile and turn her head a little, letting her hair trail delicately over her shoulder.
Too bad flirting would have been so much easier without the bandages and sling. "Hardly. I was out with the kids and Tibu fell, I tried to catch him...well, you can see how well that went. It's supposed to heal in a few weeks."

Looking shocked would have been easier if Mero's concern hadn't been a valid one. "What? No! Not.. really. 'Run away' sounds so much harsher than the simple break I was takin'." He waved a hand and laughed dismissively. "My parents are out of town, so they ain't there to yell at me to stay put. I get the feelin' that they're testin' out releasing the shackles, since ma hasn't left Zena since bro and I were born. Big step for her!" He grinned with a reassuring thumbs up.
Sling or not.. Kuno felt like Mero's smile was even sweeter than he remembered from before. "I'm tellin' you, kids are dangerous." He spotted the satchel on the ground and bent to scoop it up. "This yours? We can get it for you. Bubs, come'ere and carry this for Mero." Another pleased smile was sent Mero's way. "I was hopin' ta get here earlier, but someone had ta land and sniff the dust every ten minutes! Figured you'd be tucked away home already and I'd have ta wait for tomorrow. Guess it worked out though, huh?"
With his mission complete, the raptrix had started letting the random smells distract him again. The call of his name though had him right back at Kuno's side. He cocked his head curiously when the satchel was slung around his neck, but didn't mind the load otherwise. If anything, he was happy for the attention and to have another task.

A break? Yeah, right~ Surely his parents hadn't expected their son to travel so far while they were out of town, but it wasn't her place to stop him now that he was here. It wasn't as if she was totally against seeing him again, anyway. "Well, in that case I hope she and your father have a nice trip. It sounds like she could really use a change."
Oh, and now he was carrying her things? Mero really wasn't going to complain about him dropping by now~ "Oh, lay off him. There's just so much to take in and unlike you he's never been here before. Bubs gets a pass; just this once." Seeing the raptrix this close really broke the illusion of grandeur the species had. For the entirety of her life she imagined these strapping winged warriors fighting giant beasts atop a glorious raptrix and now...Well, she had an idiot of a hybrid and his pet. It wasn't a terrible combo, but it was far from legendary.
"Chores don't really stop just because you're hurt." She shrugged her good shoulder, and reached up to tuck a lock of curled hair behind her ear. "So, why come all the way here? Did you miss me that mu- OH!" Out of the corner of her eye Mero saw a shooting star and lifted her hand to point. "Kuno, look! Look, did you see it?! There, it's another one!"

Kuno sighed heavily and patted Bubs' side. "I guess you have a point. Hear that Bubs? Ya get a pass thanks to the nice lady." He had to admit that he had done his fair share of gawking when he had first passed through. "Besides, he did a good job findin' you." Then she made another good point! He had been hurt enough to know that chores could be done around an injury. It was admirable, really. Most of the girls he knew would demand to be left alone at home to heal rather than continue working...
He surprised himself with a sudden heat coloring his cheeks, eyes ducking away bashfully. It was just so cute when she tucked that curl back, and she had so much spunk... He hadn't quite noticed it before, but he really had been missing her... but that was just too silly to say, wasn't it? They had only met the two times before.
Part of him was thankful when Mero noticed the stars above them. Ah! So ha had seen something up there earlier! His gaze rose, smile spreading once again. "Come on, we'll be able to see it better outside of town and away from the fires." He hopped smoothly up onto Bubs' back, who was bracing himself to bounce for whatever destination was next. Kuno reached down to Mero and wiggled his fingers. "He'll get us there faster so we don't miss it. I promise I wont let ya fall off."

She nodded and was already taking a step forward when he mounted his raptrix. Was he...was he just going to ride while she walked? Of all the -
"Oh no, no no." Mero raised her good hand and waved it in front of her as the teen shook her head. Not once in her life had she ever been in the sky and she wasn't about to do it now with a broken arm. Was he crazy? Why did you even ask a question you already knew the answer to? "I'll fall for sure and we'll both break more than an arm." It was awfully tempting, though...And she knew that the other girls in her village would be curious about the mysterious figure flying among the shooting stars...They'll talk about you for weeks. But Mero really was scared, though; what if something bad happened?

Kuno's brow rose with surprise at the denial. He hadn't expected to see that. "Ahh, it's not for sure. I'll make sure he sticks to a walk if that would help? His walk is still quicker than us skipping." Ha! Seeing her skip about would have been amusing. He glanced upward to see another star shoot along the sky. How long was it going to last? "Besides, I promised I won't let you fall, and I meant it." He gave her another confident grin and wiggled his fingers again.
Bubs' tail flicked with anticipation, a little hum of eagerness deep in his throat. Could they go now?

She could say no and walk away right then. It wasn't as if he was the first boy Mero had denied an evening with, nor was he likely to be the last and yet...How often was it that she got to ride atop a raptrix under shooting stars with a boy who had come all this way just to see her?
"...Fine, but only because I'm feeling generous." She took his hand and with a lot of fandangoing managed to get on top of the raptrix. Mero may have been nervous, but there was no hiding her smile. This was possibly the most exciting thing she'd done in her life!

"Good! I'll accept generous." Being that the other teen had only one good arm, he made sure Mero was securely settled in front of him before nudging Bub's with his foot. "Okay Bubs! Let's go- walk walk walk!!" His arm swept around Mero's waist when Bubs tried to leap into a run, an apologetic smile rising. "Sorry, he's still young... But now you can look up without worryin' about watchin' your step." Grin back to normal, Kuno tipped his head back to look up at the dark sky and the bright lights slashing across it.
Bubs had quickly calmed into a slow trot, just happy to be on the move again even if it was just a walking pace. He would have gone back to sniffing everything, but Kuno kept him focused on his task and they quickly reached the edge of town. He walked for just a bit longer before he was stopped, still close to town but far enough that the depth of the sky was clear to see. There, he paced in long ovals going between sniffing the ground and looking at the people on his back curiously.

At first adjusting to the swaying motion of the raptrix beneath her took an adjustment. Mero shifted into a comfier position, nestling back against Kuno as did so and relinquishing some of her control over to him. He said he wasn't going to let her fall so she was going to trust him. Of course that was a moment before the excitable canine lurched forward, causing her to really bump against Kuno. Instead of grasping onto Bubs, however, Mero used her good arm to overlap the one now around her waist.
She may have scowled at him, but her cheeks were still a warm pink.
Instead of focusing on it she turned her attention to the stars and gave an almost wistful sigh. "It's gorgeous; I've never seen anything like it..." Seeing something like that reminded the teenager of how young she really was. That same childhood excitement bubbled up in her and soon enough her eyes were practically glowing. "What do you think it means?"

It almost felt silly to be gawking up at the sky like he was, but at least he wasn't alone in doing so. Could his parents see the stars wherever they were? Could his family back at the sanctuary? Maybe they were gawking, too? It was kinda nice to think about.
He couldn't help glancing to see Mero's expression when her voice changed, and felt that pull in his gut again. He swore he could see the stars reflecting in those wide eyes... He turned his attention upward again to get his cheeks to cool back down. It really was neat to watch the phenomenon up there... "I've heard about 'em before. Lots of people think it's an omen. Whatever it means, I bet it's somethin' awesome~"
