Family

Mother: Irrohnaghal
Father: Qoraekai
Sibling: Oliandr
Familiar: Onlias the Kinfa

History
Tsallin was born to Irrohnaghal a vitligo leafling and Quoraekai an albino fireling. He has one brother so far called Olliandr who is his twin except their crystals are a different color. He secretly hopes for a sister eventually.

As a youngling he met Ruulu and quickly they became an inseparable pair with their kinfa. Rydandaroch joined them soon after.

Tsallin is blooming into a right little leader in an unexpected turn from such a shy youngling. The three grow together stronger every day. He is the base of the roman arch where Ruulu forms the keystone.

Responsible
Tsa is kind compassionate but firm in the rules he does enforce. They are for everyone's protection after all. He is inclusive and supportive but will cold shoulder if lines are crossed once betrayed in a way that bothers him it could be very hard to earn his trust once more.

Supportive:
He is willing to go out of his way to take care of those around him, he is immensely trustworthy to those in his close group for a son of a thief and treasure hunter.

Stubborn:
Everyone has a crux and Tsallins is that he can sometimes be unmovable on topics that he takes a liking to. It could be a serious matter or a simple one like where the vegetables should go in the pantry but once he sinks his teeth into an issue its really hard to unstick him to see your way.

Solo 1

Hand Caught in the Egg Jar
Tsallin made a nest for the egg that he had found in his Mother’s things. What was one to expect from the son of a thief and a treasure hunter. She might notice that he had taken it eventually, but for the time being she was oblivious and he was safe with his new prize. He wasn’t sure what was in the egg but was determined that the family would not have this one for breakfast, no matter how hungry he was at the moment. A crack appeared on the shell and he wondered exactly how long it had been there. He continued to watch it, pausing in his nest making attempts. This was utterly fascinating, the birth of a thing. Mom had explained how eggs worked and how valuable they were, she would know being a treasure hunter. He was proud that that was what she was, it was just as awesome as what Dad was after all. The crack got bigger and he had to sit on his hands to keep himself from prying the lid off the egg and seeing what was inside. The only thing that stopped him was him wondering what eggs did in the wild without help..how did they get out? So he needed to be patient to see what would happen.
The egg shuddered and the youngling held his breath. This was it, it was so exciting he could barely contain himself, vibrating along with the egg. It split in two suddenly depositing a very wet…kinfa?! A real kinfa! He had thought they were just myth but no this was a real one, and it looked at him, he had heard about imprinting but was shocked to realize that that was what was probably happening at the moment to him. A whole bird just for him, and he thought they grew pretty big didn’t they? Maybe they could grow together? He peeled the rest of the shell fragments off the little bird and listened to its first noises. Had he sounded like that when he was born? In any case this little one would be the most important thing to him. It looked like it was grey but he wondered if it would change color once the downy feathers dried like when you wet a rock and it seemed to change colors when it dried. He decided to name the little bird Onlius. His mother found him later with the oddest consternated look on her face before she shrugged and gave him food for his new beast. Tsallin had no idea how expensive a kinfa egg was and his mother chose not to inform him but just made sure he knew to keep really good care of it, which of course he had been going to do from the start. She needed have reiterated that.
This was Tsallin’s first big feat in life, little did he know it though as so many other’s would have loved to have a Kinfa egg to hatch. He had gotten one quite by chance, this egg would shape his life though. A bond from birth was hard to beat and as time went on he and Onlias became very close. The bird had free reign of the small house, his mother gracefully taking the financial blow so that one of her sons could keep his pet. It was also a nice way to tell them apart because the kinfa gravitated to only one of the twins, and not both which would have made things more complicated indeed. Overall it worked out for them, but most of all for the more quiet son who now had a mighty creature to fight in his corner, even if at the moment it was just a feathery ball of fluff.

To Market

Tsallin accompanied his mother on one of her shopping trips, he was busily looking around at the bright colors of the open air Oban market. This was home to him, he could tell his Mama liked living here among the vibrant stalls and loud vendors, she was ever graceful ever kind but didn’t take any crap from anyone either. It looked like she had been here long enough to meld as well as she could into the background with her green clothing somewhat offset by the Oban red and black. They probably wondered what a leafling was doing here, especially such an odd looking one, but it was nothing compared to what looks they got when the whole family went for a walk. Dad wasn’t here after all. Mom, Dad and his brother along with himself caused quite a stir, because if people looked close enough they noticed that they were definitely a family. Tsallin was alright with them watching so long as Mom and Dad didn’t mind, not much seemed to bug his brother. Tsallin was sensitive and he stuck close to his protective baby kinfa which was about the same size as himself at the moment, but Mama promised he would get real big, just like Tsallin would one day get real big. He knew his Mama loved him and his brother, and she at least loved to tease father. Tsallin loved them all, his family was special, and they were all his.
But right now he had Mom all to himself so he tugged her over to some pretty fabric and explained how it would look so good on her. She smiled brightly at him and bought some of the fabric, calling him her little consultant..whatever consultant meant. Oh well he was happy to help her out. Maybe she should try something besides the green of her people? After all she was half Oban now. He thought the new reddish hue would look really good no matter what she got it made into. He loved these trips with her, he felt like her sidekick.

And so Narcissus Looked at Himself
Tsallin was playing with three other Oban children, two boys and one little girl with the most floofy hair ever. He was playing make believe with them, his kinfa for once napping at home, and hopefully growing. Mom had said she would look after him. Tsallin tried not to worry over much about it and continued to fly above little pebbles that were in their mind’s great mountains. All of a sudden though his pink crystal’s caught the light and it was enough to make one of the boys who had yellow crystals like his brother take notice and comment on them.
Tsallin explained that no he had always had the pink crystals, even though Olli had the yellow. He had to explain that his mother was a leafling, causing shock in the other boys eyes. This offended Tsallin just a little bit, his mother was beautiful and leaf and he was part leaf and also beautiful, the world should realize this and stop acting so silly. What was common place to him still seemed yet to have reached others deep in Oba. He polished his pink crystals, proud of who he was glad that he was different then them. They all had the boring yellow like the rest of Oba seemed to, he had green eyes and pink crystals but otherwise could pass as an Oban. This meant that he was special and unique among them, different than even his brother.
The game was mostly forgotten during this discussion amoung the four younglings, the original boy seemed a bit peeved at him but well it couldn’t be helped that he was a little more awesome. The other two seemed to admire his pink crystals just fine and if the first boy wanted to have a problem with it, well it was his own fault for bringing it up in the first place.

New Places New Thoughts

Well maybe this visit to Tale wouldn't be so bad after all. He had already made a new friend, and so what if she wasn't a leafling, maybe he liked it that way. She was different from everyone, just like he was, and she had these wonderful teal-green eyes that he just couldn't get enough of.

A girl from the exotic fantasy realm of Jauhar, where radaku reportedly stalked the misty forest at midnight, hunting for prey under a solid canopy. Their whoops and howls could curdle blood it was said. Could they eat a youngling in one bite? He sort of wanted to find out, but maybe not first hand. What had he been thinking about? Oh right a future trip to Jauhar, but only when he was older yes. He thought that perhaps Ruulu was a little older than he was, by how much though he was not sure. She certainly had grand plans for their future. He thought that it would be nice not to have to ride alone, maybe they could have a group of kinfa riders! If they were super smart they could pull it off. How many would be a good number though? Three? Five?

He stroked Onlias's incredibly soft feathers pensively. The bird warbled and presented his cheek for proper scratches. Ahh there was no bond quite like that between a boy and his kinfa. Onlias was the only one besides his twin that he could tell anything to. He was extremely grateful to himself for digging in his Mother's purse, to his Mother for actually having something interesting in there and to the gods that the egg had hatched and was now his. That wasn't to say that a snaptrotter egg wouldn't also have been cool. That must be in the next shipment, he thought, snaptrotters. Now if he had been left to capture a kinfa on his own he would have been forty by the time he could manage it. Then he would be eighty by the time it grew big enough to ride! Nope, he settled into his Mother's old bed, his bird curled up in a bird ball by his head, this was so much better. He wondered how his Mother had gotten a hold of that egg in the first place. Oh what mystery awaited the son of a thief.

Tsallin Class Choice

Was there ever any question of what he would be since he was a youngling? Tsa thought not as he watched his kinfa soar around. Onlias was growing just as the other kinfa were and his wing span was starting to be pretty impressive. Tsallin could not wait to challenge the test that Ruulu had designed. Her tales of her adventure and Tale had him dreaming about flying on strange adult kinfa nearly every night....the nights he wasn't dreaming about kissing her for the first time anyway. He had two goals in life Ruulu and flying, perhaps he could expand his mind a bit more, dabble in a little magic which was also interesting. He pondered, young yet the possibilities were endless the ideas enriching. What lay beyond that mountain or more interestingly on top of it. In it even? Did it hold a cave suitable for a scouting base. Would others be able to reach him there unless they could fly too?

Why didn't everyone become a rider, seriously. To have a close bond with a being that could fly or run faster than you or tear a tree from the roots, honestly it was a match made in even. In return you gave that animals the best care possible so that you could achieve great things together. Then imagine having a few more like minding people coming together with their own mounts and then you really had something to reckon with. Something other people would comment on and admire. Who hadn't dreamed of flying one day, with your friends for miles over Tendaji's wilderness. It was awe inspiring.

He hoped that he could master his talents, gain the ultimate trust of his kinfa and prove to him that he deserved to be his rider, that he was worthy of that honor. It was no simple thing what they were trying to achieve together as a whole. He was sure that many people had failed or there would be tons of kinfa riders out there. One had to not only master the beast but master the sky as well, where snaptrotter riders mastered the water and land, janarim riders the deserts ect.

Was air truly his element, he thought so. The sky called his name and he had dreams that he could fly without a kinfa's wing beats to hold him up so there was a chance that he had done the right thing when he had followed Ruulu all that time ago. But how could he possibly have done any different? She had ruled his heart from the very beginning. He regretted not knowing her while she was a youngling too, but even in the time he had known her he had watched her grow into a fine young woman. He hoped he could show her that he deserved her too. That he would be there to support her and help her achieve her dream as his own person an equal to her strength.

On that note he hoped he got taller, she hadn't stopped growing yet, he supposed it would be the alkidike blood. His shorter stature might even make him a better flyer. He hoped to show her what he could be, what he would be because she had believed in his scrawny butt all those years ago.

Onlias came in and landed on his arm like he had done since he had hatched and could fly. 'Cept now he was very heavy and Tsa couldn't support his weight any more so his arm slumped and Onlias hopped to the ground a question in his eyes. "Sorry my friend but pretty soon I'm going to be able to land on your wing." He knelt and stroked the cheek of his feathered companion, "I will never leave you, you are safe with me." He promised as he had for a long time.

A rider was a reflection and a projection of their beast. Sezarra said that her Father was a rider, maybe Tsa would go to him for advice, even if he wrote a letter. He was interested in learning more, but Sezarra also said that she was better at connecting with beasts than her father was. As she was a bit of a humble soul at times he was inclined to believe her and work on some of the excercises she had prescribed for bonding.

Down to sharing meals together and of course lots of companionable time. She said that having a job for the kinfa would help too as kinfa in the wild were always busy. He had been spending much time training Onlias to hunt by cue and by species as well. He was so excited with the progress he had made, and it would have future applications in battle as well which he was exciting for. Onlias was very smart, everyone in the group thought so and he was so pleased with the progress he had made so far, he was sure he was ready for the test in Tale.

In it he and Onlias would test their wits, bond and training against the wild adult kinfa of Tale. He was so ready that he could feel it in his teeth, a new adventure alone for once. He hadn't been alone for a very long time. Just to keep out of reach of the bug people while he was there, their presence put a pall on every action all of tendaji made since the attacks had happened. Better to be prepared to fight them when the time came. He was ready to put real effort into it.

Fruit for Rain

It was pouring in Matori, a tropical storm was blustering the island, his friends were curled up with the kinfa in the warmth of their building. Rain pinged off the metal roof, running down the sides of the building in runnles. It was beautiful, having grown up in a land with so little water, any rain was like a gift, a reason for celebration. He went to the kichen and filled a small bowl with fruit, then walked outside into the rain. It was pouring down in sheets, but he didn't care, water was essential for life and he was of the desert. The rain soaked his hair and clothes within a few minutes, his boots sloshed through puddles and his foot steps provided a base beat to the pitter-patter of the rain.

He loved that sound, it was pensive, meditative and calming, being outside during heavy rain was clensing for his soul. He smiled remembering that Onlias was a warm bundle of feathers beside the other warm bundles of feathers. Tsallin reached the shore and tilted his face into the rain. He felt the droplets hit his skin, small circular blibs of wetness that joined together into lines running down his skin then free falling to the sand beneath his feet.

He toed that sand around before recalling what he was supposed to be doing. he held the bowl in the air then placed it before the ocean, where the waves could lap at it. It was his offering to the gods in thanks for the rain they had given. It wouldn't do to get complacent in the face of such wealth, he remembered where he came from. His parents would be proud of his thoughtfulness he knew. It had been some time since he had seen them and his brother. he should go back and visit, but for now he was going back inside to enjoy the sound of the rain with the others.

A Bath for the Feathers

Tsa was giving Onlias a bath, something the medium sized dark feathered kinfa decidedly did not appreciate at all. He looked miserable, soggy and pathetic with the puff of dry feathers around his head while the rest of his body looked shriveled in comparison.

He kept up a resonant siren like whine the entire time anouncing to the world each contestable moment of his displeasure.

"This had to be done before your molt son, you were covered in ick." Onlias looked away from his balefully.

"Well don't dust bathe in mud then if you don't like to get washed after, and no I don't care whose idea it was to get dirty. At least now you know its impossible to fly with your wings covered in ick." It had been a valuable lesson for the group fo kinfa, involving extraction out of the forest by the group of future riders.

A few of the feathers were already shuffing free of the shafts, indicating that the pending molt had started. It would leave his friend vulnerable and flightless for a while, ever more in need of his Master's care. Tsallin wrapped the bird in a towel and removed him from the basin. Onlias was towel dried and set loose to bask in the Matori sun. It did Tsa good to see his friend clean and loose able to go about his business. Angel the snaptrotter had come over to inspect the damp bird. They had tried to sell Angel but the snaptrotter had moped so badly after leaving them that they had reimbursed the man who had bought him and recieved the otherwise obedient snaptrotter back.

It was proof that no matter how well trained an animal or soldier personality still played a part in life and history. He watched the large white snaptrotter nuzzle the kinfa all over. Snaptrotters liked baths, so Angel was trying very hard to figure out why his friend had been so upset about being wet. The sight made Tsa smile brightly. Standing and stretching he thought ahead to his upcoming kinfa trial and was excited about the prospect. As soon as Onlias finished molting they would start it.

Tsallin Class Quest

It was time, he had grown and so had Onlias, both were approaching their final height although ONlias seemed to be getting large even for a kinfa. He smeared on some warpaint, fluffed his kinfa and went out to meet his Mistress.

Under Ruulu's blessing he and Onlias set out for Tale, she had explained at length what would be expected of ; find a wild kinfa and interact with it in some way, bask in its wild glory, observe how kinfa should be, appreciated and bond with your partner, see them for the wonderful being they were and most of all don't be killed.

"No sweat then," he muttered to himself as he strode out elegantly to his Mohter's homeland. Come to think of it the only one of their riders who didn't have leaf blood was Rydan being Ice, Alkidike and Shifter. He might not have been born in Tale but his Mother and Ruulu's mother had been.

He let a sense of home coming wash over himself when he caught wind of he botanical smell of sweet grass, having visions of his Mom frolicing through the grass, he started to skip too, Onlias trumpeted his joy to the air and Tsa promised to return here when they could fly together.

They moved swiftly through the grass for quite some time before he started to see signs of other kinfa. Then they crept toward the calls they heard until he found the nest. Onlias wanted to warble but Tsa closed a hnad around his beak.

"Hush he whispered, then stroked the dark feathers. He had to see how old the nest was; too young and he woud be resigning himself or poultry to incubate the egg for him, too old and he could have five kinfa to worry about instead of two. One could usually tell the age of a nest from the amount of excriment built up around it.

With the parents circling so close overhead however, he was unable to get close enough to the nest for a good look. He tied some fabric to a bush nearby to mark the spot then he an Onlias continued on to look for others. They found a Scorra nest next, and were chased out unceremoniously by the parent. He thought Scorra were cool but they could not fly sadly and so were not a target for his people.

The light of day faded slowly from the sky, leaching colors from the grasslands around him until everything he saw was in shades of grey. He made a campfire in a clearing away from the grass and cooked some of the creatures they had caught that day in between scouting. After feasting they went into a restless sleep ever alert to possible camp raiders. They were left alone during the night, for which Tsallin was grateful. On one hand it was scary to be alone for the first time in a long time, on the other hand it was a spiritual journey that he was begining to really enjoy. No one talking no one fiddling with things, he could eat what and when he wanted, it was just him and his amazing kinfa, his partner.

He knew in the morning he would have to return to the nest or find another way to have a meaningful encounter with a kinfa. There was no use worrying over it or he would never sleep, he tossed and turned anyway. Until Onlias came and settled about his head, the kinfa's presence calmed him.

Dawn came with a stark chill and he grumbled about it, Matori was really tropical in comparison. "I see why we live there fluffball." He groaned as he started the breakfast fire. After they were ready to go back to the nest he cleaned everything up so that their presence didn't make much of a trace, they would not come back here and it would be rude to leave a mess. There was so much to see here he didn't want to rush it but his friends would worry if he took too long.

Back at the nest he got a good look at the clutch of eggs. It looked to be the perfect age, he knew they would need some more kinfa soon and as the son of a theif and a treasure hunter it was in his blood to be a good thief and quiet.

He slithered over and scooped up two eggs, leaving the rest before melting into the bushes. The parents came back soon after and he narrowly missed being caught in the open red egged.

Onlias had waited patiently and crooned at him quietly as they moved off. It would be an interesting journey home, especially since he had to duck down in the grass when the parents started to randomly buzz low over the grass.

It was not a nice feeling to be so close to rakage from awful talons aching to catch hold of the egg thief.

He understood their frustration, in their shoes he would not rest until the whole field was scoured to the ground trying to find his children. Having children took a lot of effort, where snatching eggs seemed awfully easy in comparison.

It wasn't his first time, but he hoped it would be the last time. It was unpleasant work, a joy to complete, but one of these days he would be caught and likely killed. Kinfa, especially raging kinfa were not to be underestimated. Being suited to the deed did not negate all the risk he took. On the plus side he had not gotten a wicked scar like Ruulu had. Even though he liked the scar it had been rather nasty when it was fresh and he didn't relish uneeded pain, he was practical like that. He would spend one more night in Tale, as it had taken most of the day to capture the eggs with the parents cycling in and out to feed. He could not risk staying longer than that or the eggs would suffer from the chill.

When they were settled for the night Tsa took the eggs out and showed Onlias who fluffed his feathers in offering, proving just how intelligent Kinfa were. He was proud, together they would accomplish amazing things and he would cherish these days for the rest of his life. He needed to spend more quality time with his best friend, he knew that now. The bond they shared was truly special and he loved this time together fiercely more than he had thought he would.

When he returned to Ruulu she was impressed with his catch that showed his commitment to the group, she passed him and gave him a small carving of a poscuta for his resourcefulness, perserverance and stealth.

1134

Blurb: Tsallin has learned through this quest that it is okay to be alone for once in his life, that it is okay to be alone and sometimes essential to increase the bond between him and his kinfa. His companions after all are not being ridden into battle in the air no less. He also sees how his inherent skills help to make him a valued member of his chosen group and that having his hand in gathering kinfa eggs ensures that a) the eggs are properly taking care of (if you want to do something right, do it yourself) and b) never take more than you need ( need not, want not). Its taught him that in order to become a good leader you need to care about actions both your own and think about the actions of others, will they take the same care as you, is there a way to guide them to do the right thing by example? Yes there is, by following the rules yourself and teaching others to do the same.
