"Aether Paradise"

Aether Paradise is a large manmade floating structure that serves as an artificial island located in the middle of the Alola region, near Akala Island. It was created by the Aether Foundation to serve as a base for their research. To protect the wild Pokémon being treated in their base, a jamming signal prevents the use of empty Poké Balls within the facility, however trainers may still fish for pokemon out on the docks. The Aether Paradise consists of four floors, the entrance, the docks, the lab, and the conservation area. The Aether Laboratory is at the lowest level, in which research is being done on the Ultra Wormhole and the strange beasts that have been appearing from them. In one of the labs, a project pokemon called Type: Null is being created and perfected, designed to combat the Ultra Beasts, and every Friday, the Aether foundation allows trainers to come in and help their research by battling against a new line of Type: Null.

Above the labs lies the docks, where boats full of endangered pokemon, supplies, and sightseers can easily access the island. Above that is the main entrance, where there is a landing deck for those coming to Aether Paradise by air, and inside is the front desk, and many facilities where pokemon are cared for. Lastly, at the very top level of the island is the conservation area, a pokemon preservation area where endangered pokemon can roam free without fear of being captured or hunted by predators.

✧✧【 It was nearly evening as they came in to land on the deck of the enormous manmade island that served as the Aether Foundation’s primary headquarters, Eveline gazing up at the imposing building looming overhead before she and Lam made their way inside. Almost immediately she was struck by how bright and white the interior space was upon entering, nearly blinding in how absolutely immaculate it seemed. Far too pristine for her liking… ”Welcome to the Aether Paradise!” Three different voices piped up at nearly the same time, drawing her attention to the trio of receptionists seated at the front desks on either side of the entrance. All were dressed in the signature white uniform that most Aether employees wore, the three women flashing the redhead warm, welcoming smiles. Returning her most friendly smile back and raising a hand in greeting, Eveline saw someone else waiting for her as she and Lam walked past the desks.

The figure was also dressed in a crisp-looking white uniform, but unlike the receptionists and most of the other employees milling about the uniform seemed to be styled more like a lab coat. The person’s face was covered by what looked like some sort of mask, with a yellow visor that surely allowed them to see while also obscuring their face. Almost immediately Eveline felt on edge as she approached the person who appeared to be waiting for them… The fact that she couldn’t see their face wasn’t helping much with her paranoia, though she didn’t let her suspicion show through too much as she subtly sized the person up, whoever they were…
”Welcome, miss,” they greeted as they performed the traditional Alolan greeting, the voice clearly male in spite of the slightly muffled, tinny-sounding quality as they spoke through the mask, ”Is this your first time visiting the Aether Paradise? I would be glad to give you a tour of our facility if you’d like.”

”A tour sounds nice, if you don’t mind,” Eveline answered easily with a nod in answer and a polite smile, ”I’m not really too familiar with Alola myself, but I’ve seen quite a few Foundation facilities scattered about the islands during my travels.” The man nodded, gesturing for them to come along as he led them towards the center of the room and onto a triangular platform that apparently served as an elevator. ”Of course, we are still expanding our outreach to the various islands to be able to help any and all Pokemon in need of aid,” he explained, and though she couldn’t see his expression the proud smile could be heard in his voice, ”I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but there’s apparently been a large spike in Team Skull activity lately… As such we’re doing our best to concentrate more effort into rescuing more Pokemon in need of treatment and protection. Of course, Team Skull is hardly much of a significant threat to us or the general public, but seeing more activity from them is certainly cause for concern, to say the least.” 】✧✧

Team Skull was one of the few villainous ‘organizations’ that she had never really bothered to associate with, not that she ever really had much of a reason to. Unlike most other decently-sized criminal groups like Team Rocket and Team Galactic, Skull always seemed like little more than a large group of punky delinquents who did little else apart from causing trouble and stealing Pokemon just for the sake of raising hell and wreaking havoc. They didn’t seem to really have any particular straightforward goal to push towards, in a way they were kind of similar to Flare in Kalos, and even then Flare had a certain objective in mind that they were pushing to achieve… ”I’d imagine so, I know they usually tend to stay holed up in Po Town but I’ll keep that in mind if I happen to run into any stray ruffians trying to cause trouble,” she said, watching as the scientist walked over to a small keypad, ”Now, concerning the tour… I’ve heard a fair bit about the huge Pokemon conservation area here, where would that be?”

The man nodded, seeming quite pleased with his answer as he input the floor number for the Aether labs, B2F. Built-in guard rails popped up around the perimeter of the triangular elevator as it began to move, smoothly gliding downwards towards their destination. ”We’ve been working on trying to perfect our largest and perhaps most important project in an attempt to combat the interdimensional beasts that occasionally invade Alola through the Ultra Wormhole phenomena that appear on occasion,” the scientist explained as they awaited the elevator’s arrival to the floor of the lab, ”As such we’re constantly working to improve each new line of ‘Beast Killers’ in hopes of being able to unlock their fullest potential. And the best way to get good feedback, from what we’ve observed, is by having trainers come in to battle against each new prototype to test their capabilities.”

Eveline listened with interest as the scientist gave them a bit more context on what this ‘research’ they were working on was, having heard a fair bit about the phenomenon known as the Ultra Wormhole that seemed to be a rift between different dimensions. Every so often that tear in the interdimensional fabric would rupture and open up, releasing strange yet powerful beasts into their world that were fascinating as they were dangerous. Strangely enough, though, Alola seemed to be the only place in the world where such a phenomena occurred, there had been no reports of such anomalies occurring in any other region as of yet. Still, it did beg the question of if the Ultra Wormholes spreading outside of Alola could be a possibility at some point in the future… The elevator eventually slowed down as it reached the bottommost floor, giving way to a large, circular room with doors located at the northern, eastern, and western corridors. The floor itself was clean and white like the rest of the facility seemed to be, but the neutral gray walls provided a good bit of contrast as opposed to the absolute pristine walls of the upper space. ”Now, for reasons of security I cannot really take you into the labs themselves. As of recently, we’ve been improving our measures after certain top-secret notes for Project Beast Killer were reportedly stolen from our facility,” the man said as they stepped off the elevator, gesturing for Eveline to wait as he pressed a small button on the side of his helmet, ”Hello? Yes, Mara, if you could please release subject 0370-E from Lab A for testing. Thank you.” 】✧✧

✧✧【 Though somewhat disappointed to not be able to actually see the Aether labs as she hoped, the mention of confidential notes regarding their anti-Ultra Beast project being stolen certainly grabbed Eveline’s interest. The fact that important research that was supposedly kept closely guarded by the Aether Foundation had been swiped from right underneath them did raise some questions… It was likely whoever was responsible had some kind of association with Aether themselves, most likely a former scientist or employee who went rogue for one reason or another. They definitely would’ve had to have had explicit access to the labs and to the notes themselves to have taken them in the first place. Which begged the questions of where they went, what they intended to do with the research notes, and why they stole them in the first place…

Regardless, she hardly had time to think on it for long as the door to the east slid open with a quiet but somewhat audible ‘Whoosh’ , followed by the clicking of claws on the smooth, polished floor as a large beastly-looking Pokemon stepped forth through the doorway. What drew her attention immediately was the large helmet piece it wore that covered the entirety of its head and face, save for the axe-blade looking appendage that stuck out from the center of the crown of its skull. The body was another story entirely, a strange assortment of random parts taken from questionable sources that were mixed and matched and fit together to assemble… whatever this was. The front legs seemed insect-like, three-toed and covered in a spiky green carapace, the back legs bore an array of thick scales along its flanks and shins, and the fish-like tail on its backside hardly even looked anywhere near fit for swimming. It was ugly, in a strangely interesting kind of way… Eveline would admit that she had no idea what to expect of an artificially made Pokemon named ‘Beast Killer’, but it certainly hadn’t been this. As she stared at it with a mix of vague disgust and curiosity, the beastly thing stared back, its sharp grey eyes sizing her up and down.
”0370-E is a particularly stubborn sort from what we’ve observed. We haven’t gotten much in the way of testing done on this specimen because it continually resists our efforts and even tries to destroy equipment. We have to regularly give it low doses of sedatives to keep it calm even for simple procedures like feeding,” the scientist explained, pulling a notepad and pen from his coat, ”High aggression isn’t a normal trait among specimens, but I suspect there were errors in the parameters set for its creation. Perhaps a battle would give us the proper test results we need, and will allow it to channel some of its pent up aggression.”

”Right, well if it’s a battle it wants,” Eveline smirked, grabbing Gin’s ball and releasing the Luxray onto the floor, ”I think we’ll be able to give it a good challenge.” Taking a brief moment to survey their surroundings, Gin turned to face the strange-looking Pokemon that stood across from him, its eyes moving away from his trainer to now gaze sharply and intently at the new presence before it as it towered over him easily. The Luxray stared back, golden eyes and face unflinchingly impassive, yet the crackle of electrical energy that radiated off his fur gave a clear challenge. Before anyone else could say anything, the Type: Null charged at Gin with a sudden burst of speed, insectoid claws bared to land a hefty first strike on its apparent new opponent and attempt to pin him down. The Luxray fought back tooth and claw, rolling to the side and just barely missing the sharp talons as they grazed his side and slamming his attacker back with an electrified tackle. With a growl the Type: Null staggered back, already feeling its muscles involuntarily seizing up from paralysis as it shook off the residual sparks clinging to its fur. In spite of its ailment, however, the paralysis did little to slow the beast down as it snarled and retaliated right back, the pair trading blows against one another while the scientist quickly jotted down notes in the background as he observed the battle.

With a mightly ‘CRACK’ Gin landed a decisive blow as his iron hard tail smashed the Type: Null right in its masked face, and while it thankfully didn’t completely destroy it in the process it did leave a sizeable dent in what was clearly the jaw piece. The Type: Null growled lowly as it seemed to be just barely managing to stay standing, not wanting to give up the fight just yet, before finally succumbing to all the damage it took and keeling over onto the floor below.
”H-Hey! Be careful with that!” the scientist shouted, quickly moving to stand between the pair, ”Those helmets are meant to limit the specimen’s power until they’re properly ready, they would be completely uncontrollable without them! Don’t go around damaging them so carelessly!” Eveline rolled her eyes as she recalled Gin after taking a moment to heal him up with a handful of potions. ”Hey cool your jets, it’s just a little dent. At the very least it’s fixable with the right tool,” she remarked, waving off the man’s complaints before gesturing to the fainted Type: Null, ”Assuming you got everything you need testing-wise from that, what’s to become of it after?” The man huffed, clearly not the least bit pleased at the dismissal but not willing to argue any further for the time being as he pulled out a Poke Ball, tapping it against the fainted Type: Null and capturing it easily. ”Indeed, I got enough notes to make a proper enough report on this specimen as needed. But considering the potential for significant errors in 0370-E when it was first prototyped, I’m afraid we will have to scrap this one,” he stated matter-of-factly, turning to walk over to her and handing out the Poke Ball to her, ”Even so, we can’t simply discard it, to do so would strictly be against Foundation policy… So the next best thing I can do is offer for you to keep it. Perhaps you can make something good of it if you’re able to successfully train it.”

It hadn’t exactly been Eveline’s intention to take the strange-looking thing along with her even if she’d won the battle, but given that the Foundation couldn’t exactly use it for further testing and it wouldn’t have anywhere else to go otherwise… Out of goodwill, she and Lam left the island with a new teammate added to her roster and another Wishing Star for their collection, finally leaving Alola behind and moving on to their next destination to continue their hunt. It was Kalos or bust from here. 】✧✧
