Personality

Garand is a calm and quiet natured troll, given more to listening and watching than expressing himself very openly. Anyone who'd ever heard the phrase 'quiet as a mouse' might assume this was a direct inheritance from his rodent-like lusus. But of course, anyone who would put any weight on a phrase like that had clearly never actually met the very talkative and, for many sweeps, very frantic Pan. It was only as the troll gradually got older that the lusus became less of the latter, without ever losing the knack for the former. Instead of adopting the traits, however, Garand grew to balance them. A steady, unfaltering calm to keep that frantic energy from building too much, an attentive silence to take in every word and pick out the important parts.

He thinks things through before he does or says them and is always honest about what he chooses to say, though he can occasionally be too blunt about his opinions of others. As much as he might feel guilty for hurting someone's feelings, he still feels it's better to be upfront than to sugarcoat. You can't start to handle a problem until you know it's there, after all. He does generally mean well, however, and at his base is a kind troll. He and Pan help and support each other and he sees no reason why he shouldn't treat others the same way. To be honest, though, although he lives just near enough to Chittentown to be able to make the trip when he needs supplies, Garand hasn't spent much time there and, as a result, isn't much used to being around other trolls.

In particular, he isn't terribly informed on how the Hemospectrum really plays out in real life. He knows what Pan has told him and understands the basic ideas of it, but because he's only made short trips in and out of town until recently and is a highblood himself, he hasn't experienced how the system can be misused. As far as he can tell, highbloods are supposed to use their higher station and abilities to look after lowbloods. Seeing another highblood abuse their station to stomp on those below them would not go over well with him at all.

While he's not one to start fights without good reason, he is not opposed at all to ending them. Once he's set his mind to fight for something, in fact, he will not stop until it's reached a resolution that he's satisfied with. He has the same resolve with all the goals he decides for himself and is more than willing to patiently see them through no matter how long it takes. At the moment, this applies mainly to his recent interest in learning more about weaponry and technology.

While Pan's longing to explore is more based around finding his burrows and storing resources, Garand has found himself looking forward to exploring the ruins found here and there across the desert. The latest find they'd happened upon had turned up an old exoskeleton of a long dead troll and at their side, the remains of the weapon they'd used. Already busted up from whatever had claimed the troll's life, the old gun had fallen into further, mostly unsalvageable pieces upon being handled, but Garand's interest was piqued. He's made the decision since to start heading into town more often, to find resources and information on them with hopes of one day building or acquiring one of his own. He's also decided to start selling scrap that he finds and looking for odd jobs he could do to ensure he'll be able to buy the parts he might need.

When not on the move, Garand often spends his downtime around his hive and has an especial fondness for western themed television and books. He has an old guitar he picked up somewhere during a supply trip and, while he isn't much of a player yet, enjoys giving it a try. He also enjoys whistling and frequently does so while traveling or working. Living in the desert has also given him a fascination with plant-life and, though so far it's been no use, he also tries to work towards figuring out a way to grow flowers around his house. For now, he's had to make do with cacti and small indoor plants that don't need much attention.

Strengths and Flaws

        Strengths:

Calm- Garand thinks things through and takes his time before he really settles into decisions as much as possible. When things go bad, he might startle as much as the next troll, but he'll work quickly to recover his composure rather than flying off the handle in response.

Resolute- When Garand makes a decision, he stands by it right until the end. If he's picked a goal to strive for, he always puts as much effort as he possibly can into achieving it, even if that means a lot of study or saving up beetles for supplies. And if he gets himself into a fight, he doesn't surrender until fighting isn't an option at all anymore.

        Flaws:

Blunt- Honesty's supposed to be a virtue and all, but sometimes saying what you really think is the last thing anybody actually wants you want to do. Being straightforward with how he feels can often hurt feelings and sour relationships with other trolls.

Restless- It may not be as obvious for him as it is for his lusus, but Garand is unable to bear being at rest in one spot for too long. He needs to be working towards some goal, no matter how small, or doing something at least somewhat productive or else it drives him crazy. Inevitably this leads to him taking on more than he should, moving down a never-ending list of tasks without always making sure he's had time to recover strength inbetween.

Home and Lusus

        Home:

Desert - A small hive out in the middle of nowhere in the desert. It's just close enough to Chittentown that he can go in for supplies when he really needs to, but far enough that he has to plan for it and manage his time well. Although it's not the prettiest home to look at, it's sturdy enough to handle sandstorms and big enough for everything Garand needs.

        Lusus:

Pan is a small, rodent-like lusus, able to perch on Garand’s shoulder if the need strikes him during traveling. Although his size makes him seem like he would be unable to protect his charge, he is in fact more than capable, thanks in large part to his species’ speed. Two pairs of horns framing his face and a powerful enough jaw for strong bites don’t hurt, of course, but it is his speed that allows him to put them to greatest use. He has an uncanny ability to run across surfaces that it would seem he shouldn’t be able to, including water, steep climbs, and Garand would swear that he has even seen his lusus run over pure air.

Pan, initially, was a skittish parent, always in a nervous rush to see to this or that, to tell Garand everything he needed to know in great, rambling stories, to dart from one end of the hive to the other with sudden bursts of energy. By nature, his species is migratory, wandering from one burrow to the next across the desert and depending on speed to keep ahead of predator and forage for resources alike. Garand, by the time he’d been taken in by his lusus, had obviously already been too big to fit into any of the entrances to those burrows, so Pan had resigned himself to staying in the hive the drones had built for the boy, recognizing that he couldn’t keep him safe throughout the day if he returned to his usual travels.

Once Garand was a little older and more capable, they did begin to stray out of safety more often, exploring the sands at distances that got further and further as they gradually began to get a better handle on far they could travel in a night before needing to find shelter for the day. No longer feeling quite so trapped, Pan has mellowed out quite a bit. He can still talk Garand’s ear off about what he thinks about a situation, but there’s less of a frantic rush in his night-to-night demeanor now that he's got more open space to stretch out in.

All in all, while Garand both loves and respects his lusus, their relationship has settled into more of a friendship or partnership than a parent-child one. Pan has his back always and there's always some good advice in those know-it-all ramblings of his, but Garand is always free to make his own decisions.
