Reunion After Thoughts

He had finally faced the music.

Stepping out of the shadows into the light to face his twin was definitely a life changing moment. Despite the kicks and punches sent his way by his twin at their reunions, Kian had seen that glimmer of hope. Her gaze had been so downcast and sorrowful, but to see him made those mirror eyes light up instantly. Had his own gaze lit up as well? All this time apart and yet they were bonded together again like nothing had ever happened before. Well, technically he couldn’t say that. Both he and his twin sister were so much older now and so much wiser. They had moved quickly up in the world and were already mastering their own abilities and both had been through a lot of experiences that had shaped them from the children that they once were. Even he…especially he had felt so different from that cold and optimistic boy from years ago.

Behave and obey. That’ll be the best way to protect Talisia, right? Kian had stared at his appearance in a mirror. His gaze was demure -a false pretense against the true character hiding inside and waiting to burst free of its change- and his appearance was totally that of a Zenan noble. The furs were perfect accents to his silk robes that had the colors of his mother’s family and gemstone jewelry also decorated him to speak of their vast amount of wealth.

So much power and riches, but for what?

He was just a tool to his mother – a reminder of the man she had lost. ‘Kaleo’ she would call out some nights while seeking him. The older he got the worse it became as he resembled his father more and more – even their voices had the same lilt. His sister, however, was horribly abandoned by their mother as her insanity began to spread. Talisia she claimed was just a burden, a cruel reminder of herself and a spawn that had stirred jealously in their mother as she watched her lover tending to his daughter rather than to her.

Kian could only shake his head sadly. If only the woman had let go of her jealousy and had tried to love – his sister would have plenty to give back to her. Perhaps if they had even tried to as a family to bond and love then the death of their father, their mother’s love, could have been overcome. Instead their mother had just retreated further and further into herself and her fantasies.

‘She might as well place a bell on me.’ Kian’s lips pursed before he turned away. All he knew was that for now he had no choice. If he misbehaved, then it wasn’t he who suffered - it was Talisia. ‘Be glad that you’re ignored sister.’ At least then she could be free to roam, lonely as it was, and do her own thing. Eventually Kian would get them out of this cold prison and then they would see the light again…

The memory made Kian laugh bitterly. So much for that happening. He had gotten them out of there alright – a few years later by getting his own throat cut in the place of his twin. Watching her run away…that had been a blissful moment. At least she could live freely – that had been his only hope and wish then. He could have truly died a happy man there, but unfortunately fate had another thing in store for him.

At least now after all that hell he could honestly say that he was finding some peace in life. Being back with Talisia and even training with that goofball of a friend of theirs was actually relaxing. It was comforting to know that no matter what he told her it seemed that his twin would forgive him – though honestly there were still a few things he had hidden from her. Still, what he had told her hadn’t disgusted her as he had feared and Kian found himself in awe. Was this truly his life now? A new beginning for better things?

The mage rubbed his forehead thoughtfully. It was a rush of emotions alright – a flood gate of things that he had bottled up for years. Sorrow at having missed his twin’s growth and happiness for seeing that she had grown and was doing well. Anger at himself for not letting go of the past sooner, but relief that Talisia had taught him that it along with forgiveness was possible. Shock still at the fact that he was…living.

It was crazy. Almost like a dream in which Kian was honestly expecting to wake up at any moment. Even when Akemi brushed against him the hybrid had to stare back towards the raptrix, “Are you in shock too? Not only do you get to see me with my twin finally you get to meet another of your kind.” A small smile crossed his features as he rubbed the side of her neck, “You were probably so small that you almost forgot what another raptrix looks like.” He murmured playfully. Well, perhaps it wouldn’t just be Silva that she would see – surely now he would finally go back to Zena. One day at a time though – he could wait to go back to his homeland. I wonder if Tally misses it? There was something oddly romantic about how the snow glimmered in the sunlight or how the cold always made him feel so at ease.

It was far better than always being half naked here. Kian smirked. If he could he would go about in even less clothing, but that would probably only bring more trouble. Already it was hard enough to go to any nearby taverns without trouble. Now that was something he was trying so hard to hide from his twin. He had to wonder exactly how harsh of a smack she would give him once she learned about the list of names he had taken over the years. Too many to count let alone remember. He quipped quietly to himself before slipping down from the perch he had on the tree.

Speaking of the heat and sweating the male wanted to wash up. Knowing Talisia there would be a fire and a warm meal ready by the time he wandered back to the camp. Eresin is a lucky devil if he’s gotten to spend so much time with her and that cooking. It was slightly true, though a bit teasing. Who knew that his twin had learned a bit about cooking on the road? Of course she would protest and say it was from having to help raise the little ones when she had lived in Jahuar for the past few years. Still, it was nice to see his sister take on a motherly approach. He had been worried for a time. What if she had become harsh as he had? Would she even know how to show love and caring since they had lost sight of such things with their own mother?

He was so glad. So glad that it wasn’t the case. Everything good in the world seemed to have stayed with his twin at least. Though she did have an infinite amount of sass and a harsh way about expressing herself – often those would lead to bruises since she was so terribly fond of smacking others around. Kian winced playfully as he rubbed his arm. That reunion punch had lingered with him for days. Long enough for several in the encampment to make fun of him for bowing to his sister’s whims. Of course they had learned their own lessons later when Talisia had joined in on a sparring match.

Now that was scary to see. Even without the touch of magic the beast tamer had a wicked way with that whip. Even worse if that raptrix of hers decides to fight as well. Kian shook his head with a small smirk. At least he didn’t have to worry about anyone making advances on his tough sibling. Honestly he had to wonder if his whole training for so many years to protect her had just turned to protecting himself. Since their reunion the hybrid had taken to watching her with a careful eye. At least she seemed capable of handling herself and any trouble that would come her way. It was relieving.

Far from being like a certain wind girl who had such a knack for trouble. Rolling his eyes Kian only shook his head slowly. If he ever did run into her again he had to wonder about exactly what sort of trouble she would cause next time. It was a teasing thought, but one that surprised him. Even when he was out here he still had moments of wondering about her. I suppose it’s because I tormented her so much. That was all. After all how could he become fond of someone like that? More of an amusement really. Yet, as he walked down towards the stream to bathe there was a melody on his lips that he whistled the whole while…

Conflict

“Where is the girl I came here with?” His voice had held a hint of panic in it as Kian tore through the tavern and through the crowd of people. Everyone had come in for the night to rest after all the festivities and he found himself surrounded by strange faces – none of which even resembled Rhonann. Where had that woman gone? Kian swore in frustration as he scanned the sea of faces. Still, there was no sign of his companion. Had she been so offended by his earlier actions? The hybrid slowly rose a hand to his own lips – such a sheepish action which was pretty uncharacteristic of him – before forcing his hand to lower in a clenched fist. No, she wasn’t like that. Even if he had offended her she would have rather beaten him with her fists or shot a bolt at him than hide away. So where in the blazes had she gone?

Was she stuffing her face perhaps? Or had she gone on a walk? Kian was ashamed of the fact that he had actually lost Rhonann somehow. He, himself, had gone on a walk to try and clear his mind of that embarrassing action he had taken earlier, but instead of finding answers had lost his companion The man clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, “Good job, Kian.” He quipped before turning down a hallway. Even better good job to Rhonann. They had worked so hard to gain this room so why not rest up in it?

I wasn’t going to do anything else to her. He groaned again as he ran a hand through his hair. This was definitely making him flustered – something rare for the normally collected hybrid. It had been the damn contest and the emotions that were going wild about them that had made him act in such a way. If she ended up skirting away from him for the rest of their trip, then that would be a problem as well. How could he help her and redeem himself if this kept up?

The temptation to just drown out his confusion through flirting with some of the bar wenches was there, but the hybrid’s worry continued to push him away from drink and fun. Where was she? Rhonann…I might be the one to smack you for once. He groaned before a hand touched his shoulder. Cursing, the hybrid prepared a spell before stopping sort as he noticed it was the petite girl from the earlier festivities.

“Hey, lover boy.”

“Uh, yes?” Kian frowned with slight confusion.

“Didn’t you come here with your partner?” The girl pursed her lips in protest before surveying the area, “Don’t tell me that she left you here? Was something wrong?”

“What do you mean?” Ever so slowly he found himself taking a step forward as the girl continued to talk, “You saw her leaving?”

“Ah, yes. She was rushing out the doors after some scummy looking guy.” She crinkled her nose, “I’m hoping it’s not a secret lover or something. Would be a shame to leave you after all that you guys won today.”

“It’s not…” Kian shook his head at the denial, “I mean she had someone she was supposed to meet – a family member she was worried about. I’m sure he was the messenger that they sent for her.” A light lie, but one that came off smoothly and full of confidence, “I was supposed to meet up with them after resting a bit. Care to tell me which direction they went?” He smiled warmly as he took the wind girl’s hand, “Please?”

“Uh, sure!” Flushing lightly, she pointed down a path towards the right, “I mean I don’t know who would live in that area, but they did go to the right there.” She smiled towards him, “Hopefully that helps you a bit.”

“It does.” Kian squeezed her hand before letting go, “Shame my heart is already taken, but a sweet girl like you should take care of yourself.” He teased lightly before waving and turning away. Now back to trying to figure out why Rhonann had gone this way and who the hell would be taking her there. It was late so not many people were out and about, but one thing that Kian did notice was that it was a rather old looking area.

Was it abandoned through here?

Frowning the hybrid pressed forward until he spotted a dilapidated tavern. Awful tastes, Rhonann, for a rendezvous. Had she truly come out here? And was it that b*****d from the festival? Kian had noticed him as well watching them. It was part of the reason that he had ushered Rhonann into the festivities. He, himself, had been hoping for a chance to track the man down once the sun had set and the town had started to go into a slumber. This by far was not anything in his own plans and it worried the hybrid. Silly girl, why would you go by yourself? Was she afraid of dragging him along? After all the things he had done for her and all that they had been through – did she still not trust him?

Should he just turn around now and let her handle herself? It wasn’t like he was her guardian and should be watching over her every movement. She sticks me with enough bolts so I’m sure anyone else would have a worse fate. Mostly he was just upset that she had left without him and wanted to show her that he didn’t have to run to her rescue all the time. If she thought that she could handle things on her own then that was that. He would let her make a mess and then…

Rhonann’s shriek ended all of those thoughts.

Immediately his runes flashed as magic was released and he raced towards the door. A loud crash echoed through the night air as the hybrid broke into the large room. Kicking out he knocked an earthling to the side before surveying the room, “Rhonann!” His yell and the surprising amount of rage that burst from him for seeing her on the floor let out an immense amount of magical powers. Lightning even crackled outside as a storm broke through the skies as if announcing his own presence.

“Who?”

“What is going on?”

“A mage!”

“No one told me she had someone with her!”

“Doesn’t matter – just kill him already!”

Seeing an earthling or two approaching him despite things, Kian smirked. Oh you are fools indeed. His hands reached out to grab an arm and while tossing someone into another took physical energy it was the burst of flame that truly heated things up. Someone even attempted to grab him from behind but found that their hands burned to a crisp to even try and touch the livid hybrid.

He was a dancing wind of death. Like sharp knives the air cut through flesh and bone while others who tried to fight him just found themselves staring into the gleaming gaze of a beast let loose. Even when knives cut through his robes and into his own flesh, Kian merely grinned before ripping the blades out and tossing them back to those who had thrown them, “You damn monster, die!” One of the earthlings, a stockier wind woman, rushed at him with a sword.

“Monster, me?” He quipped as he knocked the sword from her hand and threw her up against a wall with his hand wrapped around her throat, “Any monsters are those that I see laying around me. Just consider me the judgement that was way past due for bastards like you.” His voice was a dangerous growl as he took in that fearful look one last time before bashing her head against the wall. They could plead for mercy now as others had done before them, but it made no point. They had made their decisions and it was their graves that awaited them.

Still more came at him and Kian found himself sluggish after defeating a few more, “Let…Rhonann go.” He hissed through clenched teeth as he finally noticed that one wind male, the one who had been in the center of the room and had hidden during the fight, held the girl’s limp body in his arms.

“Why?” The man sneered towards the hybrid, “I let her go and her guard dog will attack me. I don’t know who you are, but you’re going to have to make a choice. Get revenge for the girl or save her by giving up.”

“Or I could just stab you while you’re holding her.” Kian growled as he took a slow step towards the man. Of course, at his movement a slender line of red showed on Rhonann’s neck as the earthling nervously shook the knife at her throat. “Do you prefer to be frozen or toasted?” Kian threatened, but his gaze never left the blade at the girl’s throat while his feet stalled.

It was enough for the earthling, “I prefer to toss away some things while they’re hot.” He quipped before suddenly tossing the girl towards Kian, “I’d catch and give her the antidote before you chase me. Poisoned blades aren’t fun.” Walking a few hasty steps towards the broken door, the earthling rolled a vial along the floor.

Cursing, Kian of course went for the vial while the assaulter managed to slip away into the night. He couldn’t chase – his own body was torn and cut up from the multiple blades he had just faced off against. Even his face stung from where a dagger had glanced off of a cheek. He was normally numb or enthused by such pains, but Kian’s focus was completely on the girl who he picked up in his arms.

“Rhonann…what am I to do with you?” He questioned before opening the vial and pouring it into the girl’s lips, “If you die then I’ll have to haunt you.” Kian teased but his heart was heavy. She was so pale and there was some blood here and there. Carrying her out away from the tavern, Kian placed her down on a patch of grass and began to tend to her wounds. Water, salve, and bandages from his own pack tended to her arms and her neck was wrapped up as well.

Not that I can simply carry you across Sauti. As much as he would love to keep her in his care, the hybrid was bothered. Not only had he been too slow to catch her in time, but he had almost lost her by going berserk in the battle. Then that b*****d had managed to slip away with such an old trick. The thought made Kian’s brow furrow. Why hadn’t he just blasted the earthling then and there?

The poison. He had been so caught up in worry over Rhonann that his attention had went straight to that vial. The thought of her death had been enough to ground him and to take him out of that killing spree. Enough for him to be slowed while the thief disappeared into the night air. Once I track him down I’ll make certain he feels every cut that she did. Thought Kian with a narrowed gaze. So many thoughts of what he could and would do flickered through his mind as he carried the girl in his arms.

Soon he stopped by an inn in the next town over where a rushed healer took the girl into a room, “We’ll keep a sharp eye on her.” The woman grabbed herbs and poultices, “How long ago did she take the damages?”

“Sunset.” Replied Kian quietly, “It was almost sunset.”

“Ah, then she’s lost some blood…but you bandaged her?”

“Yes, I wrapped her arms and her neck. Keep an eye on it – there was poison on the blade.”

“I see. Antidote?”

“Already has been applied.”

“Good, good.” The healer continued to move about the room while checking on all of Rhonann’s vitals, “She seems to be stabilized. You must have caught her in time…”

“You mean right before her throat was cut?” Quipped Kian bitterly, “Then yes. I did catch her in time.”

The woman just clicked her tongue in her mouth, “Shame how awful this world is. What about you? I need to tend to you as well – you have a lot of cuts.”

“Don’t worry about me.” Kian shook his head, “Most of this isn’t even my blood. I’ll just rinse off in the stream nearby and be on my way.”

“Are you certain?” The woman frowned as concern flickered across her features, “Aren’t you going to wait until she wakes up at least?”

“I think the last thing she’ll want to see is me.” Replied Kian with a small smile, “I seem to only bring her strife – so it’ll be better if she can relax without me tormenting her.”

The healer crossed her arms, “I would doubt that considering you seemed to have saved her.”

“Still, I don’t wish to bother her while she heals.”

“Fine, but you better spend a moment with her while I go and get you some ointment to help stop your own bleeding – their blood or not some of that is obviously yours.”

Smirking, Kian nodded his head as he finally gave his consent. As the healer turned on her heels and left the room, Kian moved forward so that he could study the wind girl. She was flushed and obviously still very weak from her injuries. I suppose you aren’t going to die on me though….not yet. Teased Kian though his gaze was dark as he leaned down over her and studied her features. “Rhonann…what happened back there?” He questioned before shaking his head, “No matter. I’ll have to make sure to clean up the rest.”

His hand strayed towards her own and he held those delicate fingers in his. It was relaxing to watch her breathing and he hoped that her sleep was treating her well. Smiling faintly Kian leaned over and gently kissed her forehead, “Rest and heal.” He whispered quietly before standing once more. In his stead an amethyst rune with the etching of protection rested on the table next to the bed. That was the only sign he left for her before he left the room.

A payment was made and some supplies gathered before the hybrid said his farewells to the healer, “Take care of her for me.”

“Of course, but Kian…I’m used to you stopping by from the past. Who is she?”

“A friend.”

The healer smiled, “A friend who you almost cried over? Fine, I’ll take it.” The sautian just shook her head, “She’ll be upset when she wakes up and you’re gone.”

“I’m expecting that.” Replied Kian with a soft laugh, “If we meet again I’ll probably get shot in the other leg.”

“Excuse me?”

“Ah.” He ran a hand through his hair, “She’s very good at expressing herself.”

“Mhm.”

“Still, take care of her like I said? I have things to take care of and I can’t wait around. Not like I can do much for the healing process – that’s up to you.”

“Aye, aye.”

“Thanks again.”

“Take care, Kian.”

“Oh, I will.” He flashed her a smile, “Don’t I always?”

“Riiiight.” Shaking her head, the woman just watched as the hybrid walked away back into darkness.

As soon as the town was out of sight, Kian’s smile faded. His own body ached, but worst of all was how his heart tightened in his chest. What had he just almost let happen? One moment of relaxation could have turned into a funeral for Rhonann. His gaze narrowed as frustration caused him to slam a fist into a tree. What if she had died?

What was the point of all this power and all this training?

I’m not strong enough. He wasn’t able to track that man down when he should have instantly grabbed him at the festival. If he had gotten ahold of that one then he could have found the source before the source got to Rhonann. He wanted to question why they were after Rhonann, who they were to her, and why her death seemed so pleasing to their leader. Instead he had just left with a nearly dead girl in his arms and even more confusion.

Cursing, Kian tore off his clothing before slipping into the cold waters of the stream. Dark red swirls left his body as he rinsed off the stinging wounds. His clothing was forfeit, but he would make do with the under layers until he could stop and get more supplies. But where was he to go? Nerio. He would track back through Sauti while Rhonann healed and go back to Jahuar.

It was a loose plan, but it was still something. He just hoped that in the end it would be worth it all. Even if it meant getting into another argument with the old sorcerer…

”You have to realize that power isn’t the answer to everything. How much blood will you spill until you’re satisfied?”

“Depends on how much blood it takes for me to be able to do as I please.” Quipped a younger Kian with his arms crossed stubbornly, “Just leave me to my night roaming, Nerio. I’ll behave during the day and listen to your boring lessons. I even meditate despite how useless that is.”

“Useless you say now, but later you’ll understand.”

“Hmph, we’ll see.”

Of course the arrival of Talisia and Eresin had lightened his load and in fact he had almost agreed with Nerio’s training and way of a peaceful life. Now that he had almost lost a friend by living that way, however, Kian had to question things once more. Could he truly be satisfied with living life like this? Always worrying about if he was strong enough or if something else would come from the darkness and devour his happiness once more?

Closing his eyes, Kian leaned against the tree thoughtfully.

When he got back to Jahuar he would think about things then…

Class Quest to Mystic

((In this quest Kian reflects upon the loss of his mentor. Since Nerio's death Kian has to face what he has truly desired this whole time and realize that his passion for power corrupted his previously pure wishes for the happiness of his loved ones. That realization is pushing him to go off and find himself once more while trying to reach towards those that he cares about and wishes to protect. No longer will he keep that wall up and divide himself from his loved ones.))

Nerio was dead. Suddenly life had taken a dark twist and Kian was not certain of how to expect things. It was his fault – that he knew. How could he deal with that? A rare sign of weakness -tears- slipped down his fine features as he sat in one of the tallest branches of a tree in Jahaur. If Eresin wants to kill me he has every right. Kian sighed before staring down at his hands. Bruises and cuts decorated the knuckles, both from the fight and the punches he had just thrown against the trees in frustration. What a mess.

Cursing, the hybrid slammed his hand once more into the sturdy branch. He had a home here and this time rather than wanting to escape as he had in Zena, the hybrid had ruined it. Eresin had closed himself off and left while Kian couldn’t stand to stay with Talisia now. He couldn’t dare look at her after what he had done. So now he had his own journey to attend to, “Is this truly my time for redemption?” Quipped Kian bitterly as he stared up at the skies above him. Was this what Nerio was expecting? It wouldn’t surprise him if the old sorcerer had purposefully died to leave them a life lesson.

Power wasn’t everything. Cherishing those you held dear was.

Kian closed his eyes against the pain. Wasn’t that what Nerio would have said? But almost losing Rhonann had forced him to rethink things. It had been enough of a temptation to make him slip back into his old ways – something that had gotten Eresin caught up in his battle and had even gotten Nerio killed. Cursing, Kian grabbed the vine next to him and slipped down the tree, “You wanted me to give up my thirst for power that badly old man?”

Walking, Kian forced himself to just keep moving as he left what he had known for the past couple of years. Jahaur wasn’t going to be his place for a while now. He didn’t dare linger where those memories taunted him. He had made too many mistakes and couldn’t rework the past now. He couldn’t fix any of it. After all, no one could bring back the dead.

”Why did you want power so badly, Kian?” Nerio had asked him one day while they walked along a path from the village towards the encampment they shared.

“Why wouldn’t I want power?” Kian raised a brow towards the older sorcerer, “You’re the one who found me in Zena. You saw the shambles I was in – that woman had abused me to the last straw. I refused to ever become a victim again.”

“So it’s to protect yourself and your interests?”

“Yes?” Kian shrugged, “Might be selfish, but it’s not simply for me. Protecting those I cherish is something I would need. I almost watched my twin sister die because I was weak. I allowed her to be left alone in that cold place while daily I could see her reaching for me. I had to turn my back on her so many times and all because I was too weak to do anything against our mother!” His voice was full of emotion as he turned back towards the older sorcerer, “How would you deal with that?”

“Kian…” Nerio shook his head slowly, “But don’t you realize something? The one you hated turning your back on could have helped you…”

“What? You want to give me some cliché, oh if we all hold hands we can save the world?” Kian spat towards the ground, “She was terrified too. I just wanted to give her a happy life.”

“But now what? Isn’t she out here somewhere on her own once more while thinking you’re dead?”

Silence, but then finally. “Yes.”

“How is that better?”

“She’s still free.” Kian protested, “And one day I’ll become strong enough so that I can find her and make certain that she’s always protected!”

“Oh gods, I was a fool.” Kian rubbed a hand against his forehead, “I was a complete and utter idiot.” Nerio was right. He had gotten so blinded by power that he had forgotten his original intentions – to protect those he loved. It was to cherish the ones he held dear and to see them smile. His quest though had made him distant and cold towards them instead. Then instead of learning his lesson once Talisia had forgiven him the mage had simply just pushed away his ambitions.

They had still lingered. Lingered enough that he had gone straight to his old ways as soon as he nearly lost Rhonann. Why had he gone berserk over almost losing her? Was it because he cherished her? It was her that he cherished – not power. “I suppose I was weak and afraid.” So back to the old path he went. And it was that old path which ended up killing Nerio.

It was Talisia and Rhonann that he cherished. Rhonann who he left back in Sauti to wake up all alone after that disaster…all because he had hated himself for almost losing her. If she’ll forgive me then…. I will come back. He would try that so called ‘cliché’ idea of Nerio’s that perhaps leaning on each other could prove a more worthy protection than any unlimited amounts of brute power could give. And then he would have to face his twin sister as well. His sister who was also hurting because of his recent actions.

Sighing, Kian rubbed his temples.

“Seems like I have a lot of meditation to do Akemi.” He stated quietly as he rubbed the raptrix’s side, “The old man was right – meditation might be the best thing for me.” He could clear his mind and try to sort through his own desires. He needed to find out what he had been before the quest for power had consumed his heart. Even with forgiveness it had been his own selfish desire for power that had kept him away from all of them – Talisia, Eresin, Rhonann, and others- for so long. He hadn’t wanted them to drag him down, but he had almost -and actually lost one- because of that choice.

“No more.” Kian refused. He was going to face that inner darkness and find himself. Nerio had given him a new name and a new life for a reason. So in his memory, Kian was going to become the mystic that the man had always believed him to be capable of becoming. Forgive me Nerio, but I promise you – I will try to make you proud.

It would take a lot of work, but he was set on fixing things….
