As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being. –Julian of Norwich

Name: Holiday Jones

Nicknames: (if any) "Holi"/ "Ice Queen"

Age: 19 (now 20) 21?

Birthday: December 25

Sign: Capricorn

Blood Type: AB

Fav. Food: Chocolate. Then again... chocolate. Possibly chocolate.

Hated Food: FRUIT CAKE. Born on Christmas, Holi resents the holiday at large, and like most people, isn't fond of this heavy, 'fruity' brick.

School: Sovereign Heights H.I.T.S.

Hobbies:

-Candy Making: With her deep passion for a really good chocolate (and she'll inform you quite haughtily that HERSHEY'S is absolutely not really good chocolate... ((Although she does admit it makes terribly cute accessories.)) it only made sense for Holi to invest time and energy into trying to make it herself. Not only does it mean fewer trips, but she can customize pieces and flavors to suit her whim, without wondering 'are there any left in stock'?
To the potential detriment of her friends waistlines, she also likes to share. Just don't ask her for Christmas themed candy, that's a pet peeve, otherwise she'll happily take requests, though if she gets too tight on money, expect to be asked to pay for the supplies. She'll be sure to provide a receipt to prove she's not cheating you.

-Reading Manga: She likes to insist she's somewhat exclusive, no she hasn't read Fruits Basket, but she guiltily admits to Prince of Tennis and Ouran Host Club, but her true 'dark secret' is the stash of Yaoi and Yuri comics in her closet. She's even bought the books for the web comic 'Teahouse'... and the cell phone charm. The one with the unicorn... and Mercutio... and no she won't let you have a closer look.

Wannabe seamstress: One thing Holi wishes she could do without making the experience into a slightly useless blood donation, is sew. She's seen some of the incredible modifications one of Destiny Cities more... gothic... residents (Ume McDougall) has created, though she's a little too proud to actually approach her to...oh... ask for help... but she tries. Holi has probably done more horrible things to used clothing than a shredding machine. ((Ume ref oked by Ende))

Gemstone: Garnet

Virtues:

Sharing is Caring- Although she hates to admit to ever needing help, Holi loves to use her skills in the service of others, especially if it happens to include candy making, her favorite hobby. Got a friend who's down? Sounds like a perfect excuse for her to whip up a batch of super cute little chocolate mice with marzipan centers, or decadent sea-salt caramel... or maybe fudge... or all of the above! Chocolate makes everything better, right?

Assertive: Holi may look like a delicate porcelain flower, but one of the traits she also shares with porcelain is that while brittle in some regards, she's also quite strong. She's prepared to be the one who stands up and says what everyone is thinking when they're too nervous to say it, and she's equally prepared to deal with the consequences. When it comes to physical hand to hand, she'll need her share of backup, but socially she can dig in her heels with the best of them.

Motherly: An branch off of her assertiveness, or maybe it's the other way around, Holi doesn't like to see what she considers to be 'good' people unhappy, and she'll try and make it better if she can. She'll be the listening ear, the sage advice if possible, and the provider of mood-food, and the voice of the 'oppressed'.

Flaws:

-Proud: If she can possibly avoid it, Holi won't ask for help, and just confronting the idea that she might need to can be akin to realizing she needs to have a tooth pulled... without painkillers. Her ice queen nickname isn't for nothing, and admitting publicly that she's just not capable of something she really thought she could do can reduce her cold facade to angry tears, much to her humiliation. Her reluctance to ask also makes her particularly bristly, making it harder for many to sympathize with her frustration.

-Clap if you don't believe in Fairies: Maybe it's just that she spent so much time being inundated in people insisting that she of all people should be the embodiment of the Christmas Spirit, but Holi is a cynic. She's the first to look for wires in a magicians trick, and she scoffs at people who do believe in such things, usually quite openly.
Her world view has been badly shaken by her time in the Surrounding, and she's struggling hard to come to terms with the idea that magic, well... some magic exists, at least in so far as her inability to explain what she's seen with any kind of technology. She grudgingly accepts it's existence among the powered residents of Destiny City, but don't expect her to go trying to photograph fairies with you. That's STILL stupid.

Keep your Fandom over THERE: Christmas nuts are annoying enough, but Potter-fanatics... and *shudder* TWILIGHT fans, squealing over glitter covered stalkers... Holi can't -stand- super rabid fans. It's one thing to enjoy your favorite series, but if you're so obsessed that you can quote the number of nose hairs the guy who played your favorite character displayed in his close up... you're way... way... too obsessed and you need to move away. Preferably quickly... because she's looking for the hose. Oh and she might have the number for the local psychiatric ward somewhere... here she'll write it down for you.
She's equally impatient with people who insist that they're "otakin" to certain characters, or that they have magical invisible body parts like wings and tails to contend with, and it's probably wiser not to bring these phantom body parts up unless you'd like her to ask, with caustic sarcasm, for you to demonstrate your powers of flight.

Your own road. You shall follow it. Your own truth. You shall learn it. Your own death. You shall endure it. –Dag Hammarskjöld

KNIGHT: Hara Berezaiti- Squire of Chronos

-Link- See here for myths and legends regarding this mountain, which was supposedly one half of a bridge to heaven, among other impressive points on the resume.

- Wonder: In one of the closed outposts, this Wonder is unwelcoming and cold looking, rocky and snowy, as though the tip of a strange mountain had burst through, though it's clear after some investigation that it's not earth bellow, if there's anything at all...
Half hidden in the rocks is a painted door flanked by two eternally burning torches. Inside the door is a surprisingly warm and comforting space that seems, even now to welcome visitors, and encourage them to take a load off, and share their thoughts. The place was once a neutral ground and place of diplomacy, and somewhat famous for sweets... ((thanks Roma for the ideas))
--People cannot actually climb 'down' the mountain.--

Challenge: I will protect those within my sight!

Uniform: ((See art))

Weaponry: Growth, change, protection

Page: -A pink and glittering scarf. Maybe she can wrap it up into a rat tail and snap it at you? Not particularly threatening.

Squire: - A pink and glittering scarf, now with slightly more ornate patterns woven into it in fine thread. The central motif seems to be the symbol of Chronos. The ends of the scarf have been slightly weighted with tiny beads, the largest the size of a BB. These are not heavy enough to cause damage, but give the scarf more heft, making it easier to swing and wrap, or possibly entangle

Magic: No larger than the original scarf, Hali can wrap this scarf around a subject, or the subject and herself, forming a temporary barrier between them and attack, as long as she holds both ends of the scarf (Like a protective circle.) Both ends must be held, and the magic can only fully shield damage up to Squire equivalent, for an total of one minute a day. Higher level attacks may be (very) slightly reduced, but will not be fully blocked.

Knight: - A large stole style scarf in green, pink, and gold with patterning that suggests mountain ranges and vines, with the Chronos symbol as the 'sun'. Like the Page level scarf, this scarf has been weighted with beads in it's creation, making it easier to swing, though these beads are heavy enough to give it heft, their purpose is not damage, but maneuverability and entanglement.

Hara can wrap the scarf around herself and up to two others, holding both ends of the scarf as a circle of protection, shielding from attacks up to Knight equivalent for up to two minutes a day. Higher level attacks may be slightly reduced, but not enough to stop them entirely.

Summons Creature: a Simorgh ((basically " a peacock with the head of a dog and the claws of a lion(ess)"))
Summons Ability: Legendarily a creature of benevolence and wisdom, and tied to the legends of Hara Berezaiti as a place of healing and protection, the Simorgh does not attack, but spreads it's tail and briefly summons an eight foot area 'gate' representing the Wonder of Hara Brezaiti. Illusionary plants and luminescent white flowers spring up around the area, symbolic of the safety and purity of the area, which stands to protect those within it's borders (order or people who are not currently seeking the harm of Hara herself or her allies). In spite of legend, there is no healing from the flowers, or from the area, only brief sanctuary. The Simorgh does not (Cannot?) attack foes, only creates a this temporary barrier against attacks. When the Simorgh is dismissed, the illusionary plants and flowers also fade from existence. Picked flowers also fade out.

Prompts!
It came suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere. The note popped into your hands written in a scrawling handscript and on slightly aged paper. The name and seal of the sender is a foreign one, you can not remember ever having met or heard of such a person. The contents of the letter is all the more cryptic.

Dear Hara Berezaiti,
This correspondence is being sent to confirm your presence at the XXIV Galactic Olympics. The princesses and the many people of the galaxy are looking forward to another splendid show of bravery, strength, intelligence, and skill. Please respond with your acceptance as soon as possible.

Respectfully yours,
Knight Querquetulana

Any attempts to actually respond are met with a strange reaction, and letters refuse to send.

Normally she resorted to chocolate to coat her rattling nerves, but she'd been trying to avoid that lately. If she ate enough chocolate to make her actually feel totally calm, she would, she was entirely too aware, be totally sick very shortly thereafter. She was still comfort nibbling, legs folded up underneath her as she studied the note, but in this case it was on an chicken salad, the cold chicken unusually satisfying, since normally she preferred it hot. There was something to be said about drizzling cold chicken in salad dressing and pairing it with the crunch of lettuce and bits of carrot.

... She still wanted a serving of chocolate though, and the idea of mixing up some hot coco... unseasonable but delicious, was increasingly appealing. She was thinking maybe some Xocolatl... spicy and dark.

...Did Space Olympians normally drink something sweet to feel better? This one did anyway. The idea of going back to space was... well it was scary. Terrifying even. She could still see the creature that had killed her, it lurked behind her closed eyelids, the way the feeling of drowning in her own blood from her crushed lungs lurked just the wrong side of sleep.

Therapists had brandied about terms like "possible post traumatic stress" with blank faces and proscribed anxiety meds, but she'd been trying to avoid them. They still seemed like something other people should need, not her. She shouldn't be -capable- of having been through anything that might require such medications.

She was still trying to accept the idea that the world was big enough to include the idea that she was more than Holiday Jones, future artist in chocolate, she was also Hara Berezaiti protector of earth.

The last bit was what sent a small shiver of pride through her, resonated like an echo up through a well, confirming the strike of a stone in water deep out of sight.

The same echo, she felt, was the only reason she hadn't completely shattered, though she'd fractured. God knew she'd come back feeling fractured, and she still felt as though she were trying to glue the pieces back into place.

It could be a trap she debated. She'd been kidnapped once. Supposedly they'd won, supposedly the surrounding was secure. Supposedly was a big, dangerous word, and the descriptions about bravery and honor also pinged in small, afraid parts of her thoughts that yelled 'DANGER!' very loudly.

It could also be exciting the other voice prompted, prodding at the parts of her which had found some excitement and camaraderie writing letters to home on soup can labels, and cleaning rubble out of space gardens... fighting shadow monsters with tiny liquor bottles and matches.

Maybe it would be another step to feeling strong again.

Maybe it would help to not feel as though the great BEYOND that was space was just something that randomly HAPPENED while you were walking to class, or reading about new ideas for truffles.

Maybe. Big. Scary. Maybe.

Her fork clinked into the bottom of the salad bowl, and she licked salad dressing off her thumb, still staring emptily at the letter, as though she could see past the writing and look for the face of whoever had penned it.

It might be a very small step, but small steps were how you taught yourself to walk again, and then to run.

[SOLO]-Broken- 839 words

She had not, after all, taken the invitation to play in the Knight Olympics. The little shiver of pride she had felt, reading the invitation, had not been enough. Battling one corrupt Senshi had been too much. Overwhelmingly too much.
Things had... gone down hill from there.

She had no idea how to explain to a psychiatrist why she had unexpectedly found herself violently and thoroughly ill in the middle of a pet store's fish section. She had, feebly, explained it as dreams. Horrible dreams, that she could not explain, from her time being kidnapped. Time she was not supposed to remember.

Her psychiatrist had kindly and gently offered some thoughts based on the interpretation of dreams. This and that on how water and fish were supposed to have some representation of emotion.

She smiled, nodded, and felt ill again. She hadn't even been able to look at sea food for weeks. She thought she'd been getting better, but instead she kept feeling worse.

She'd broken down just talking to another 'good' senshi. How was she supposed to do any of this? She thought she was strong enough to do this, but maybe she was breaking apart after all. She didn't know how Pharos managed it. How did you manage with just fuzzy animals to pet? How did you do that when she couldn't even look at something with scales and gills and not see that giant... thing... in the infirmary?

Ironically she'd found herself able to watch the bloodiest of horror films with a sort of... numbness she had not anticipated. The blood looked not quite right, not after having seen it for real. The reaction to injury transparently theatrical in many cases.

She was so constantly, quietly afraid that her nerves were becoming numb to the sensation, and with it it felt as though other emotions were being quietly vibrated out of place.

She had thought about returning to her Wonder, but even that felt... terrifying. What if there were more Youma there. What if she weren't strong enough? They'd done their best to clense the place, but what if... what if...
She'd thought about it one night and hadn't realized until she'd felt her mothers arms around her, tight and comforting, that she'd sat up in bed screaming.

"Night Terrors" they'd called it.

There had to be a way to get stronger. Didn't people do this all the time? People went to war, they came back, they somehow muddled on with their lives. Right? People did it. She just wasn't sure how she could too.
That had something to do with why she was sitting in the office, in the dark, the plate beside her (with the battered remnants of a slice of chocolate-cinnamon bread sitting under her fork) lit by the hazy glow of a computer monitor as she clicked links in the dark.

You feel on edge. Nightmares keep coming back. Sudden noises make you jump. You’re staying at home more and more. Could you have PTSD?
She closed her eyes and scrubbed at her face with her palms.

"...Ohgod... seriously?"

Her psychiatrist had mentioned it, along side with the talk about fish and emotions, because you couldn't rationally talk to someone normal about going to space and rainbow bridges and monster fish and crushing bones and blood and pain and d... ********. Nope. Nope nope nopeidy nope nope ******** nope s**t nope hell nope nope with a slice of pie a la mode. NOPESTICK.

tinktinktinktink She'd picked up the fork again absently and was tapping it fast and lightly against the glass plate, the sound a sharp, discordant bell to help focus on what was right here, right now, in front of her face. The computer was real. The plate was real. Her full (nauseous) stomach was real. The taste of chocolate and cinnamon and sugar was real. The vague desire for a cup of tea was real. She wasn't going to sleep anyway. She might as well have it. Maybe it would be nice. Maybe it would keep her from throwing up. Maybe she should focus. FOCUS.

Read the damn symptoms.

Wide variety of symptoms, blah blah blah....
Feeling upset by things that remi... yes. Nightmares, vivid memories, flashba... YES. Feeling emotionaly cut off... Eliza's syrupy chirpy smile.... Yes. Feeling numb, yep...depressed... feeling in danger...anxious, jittery or irritated...Yep, yep yep yeppidy yep..."

"Oh my god I'm going to bat a perfect game at this aren't I?"
tinktinktinktinktink

"Panic, sense of impending disaster...trouble sleeping... trouble focu...well maybe not so much that one... having a hard time relating to loved ones... Yes. I mean... it's... I mean... yes."

She pushed the chair back, put the fork down, and ran both fingers through her hair. Maybe she should cut it short, then people couldn't gr...
No. No she wasn't going to let this rule her life. She wasn't going to be controlled by fear.

Somehow.

Somehow...
