Guild Overview and Helpful LinksWhen starting out here in the Kanto RP Guild there are a few things you should bear in mind.
Firstly, everyone is welcome to join us, regardless of RP ability, but we do expect everyone to
put effort in to keep the guild at a minimum of a ‘
semi-literate’ level. We aren't strict and won't be throwing people out for poor literacy skills, but it is nice to see well-written posts that go on for more than just a couple of lines.
Next, you'll want to come up with some characters; usually this means
your trainer and
their pokémon.
As far as your trainer goes, there aren't many guidelines. They must be an
original character of your creation, and you should start at (or near) the
bottom of the ladder; no pokémon masters thank you! You have to RP -
earn respect, earn experience, earn trust - to be considered any better than any other trainer around.
Regarding your trainer's pokémon, you are not limited to those commonly found in Kanto. Most pokémon from across every region can be found and caught on any route and in any city in this region. Certain pokémon (listed
here) are restricted, but
if a request for restricted pokémon is made to the guild admins it will not be unfairly declined. We will ask you to RP catching it - and it'll have to be a pretty fantastic storyline - but 'restricted' does not mean 'impossible to get'. Limitations are simply to keep everything fun and fair.
We
advise you to start with
no more than three pokémon and to RP catching any others. That makes it more fun for you and for those around you. Once you've decided who your trainer is and what pokémon they have, you need to
write and post a Trainer Card in the
Character Profiles thread. The generic profile skeleton appears on this page, a few posts down from here.
Usually you'll want your Trainer Card to have a picture. If you don't have one you can always ask our other members to draw you one.
We've got some good artists among us, and you can get their attention by posting in the
Trainer Sprites and Art Services thread. You don't have to have a picture though--we just think it makes posts a lot prettier!
Once your Trainer Card is up it's a good idea to head over to the
Trainer Locator thread. In there you can find out where our existing members are posting and if they're available to RP with. You can also post up your ideas for plotlines to see if anyone wants to join in with you.
If you don't post in that thread - if you don't come to an
informed decision about where to start your journey - and you get bored because you've nobody to RP with, we can't help you; if you choose to start your journey in Pallet and every other member of the guild is in Lavender, that's your own fault!
Once you're up and running with posts you'll need to acquaint yourselves with
Pokémon Online, the online simulator we use to decide the outcomes of battles. (For more information on battles see
here.)
All gym, contest and event battles are done using Pokémon Online. We do this because it's
fun and
exciting, and because it cuts out problems with god modding (making every battle and every trainer’s strength
fair and
dispute-free).
If you don't have access to Pokémon Online you should read
this post.
If you want to use the simulator to battle a wild pokémon or an NPC trainer you can ask a crew member, who'll be happy to act as them for you. Once your first battle is under your belt, you'll be well on your way!
But what next? Well, the
Kanto gyms and Indigo Plateau are available for trainers to challenge and
contests can be entered in any city with a contest hall. Alternatively, you might want to try your hand at becoming a
Pokéringer master or a
Sumo champion. Of course there's nothing stopping anyone with the determination from taking on
everything in their path! On the other hand, there's nothing to say you have to take on any of those challenges; you might be happy travelling around, taking part in
events and trying to stop Team Rocket from succeeding with
their plans. You might even want to make that your priority by joining the
KARP!
Whatever your plans, as you go you should
record your trainer’s progress in a log in your Trainer Card. It's also a good idea to keep a note of your
inventory and achievements, including any prizes you've won. That way everyone can easily find out where other trainers are in the region and what progress they’ve made so far in their journey.
Always remember,
we're here to have fun! This guild has been designed so that there's always something for you to do. If the events aren't your style, if you want to step out of (or expand on) your character's main storyline, or just for a change, you can always check out the
non-canon sub-forum. Anything you get up to in there is independent from your main plot. You can post as your pokémon in the
Ranch, post a back-story for your character,
like Hooij has for H, post a story for a side-character from your main storyline,
like RobX2000 has for Master River, post an Ask Me Anything,
like Nireii has for Raide and her pokémon or start up something new of your own.
There's always something to do, and always people to do it with, so what are you waiting for? Get to it!
