SOLO RP: Long Dark Teatime Of The Soul

Vera sat perched on the edge of her sofa, hands clenched into the fabric of her jeans. She flickered another glance at the clock on the opposite wall and sighed. Janice wasn't late; she wasn't early, either, since Vera had simply called and asked her to come over when the other girl had a moment. She'd explained that it wasn't an emergency, that Janice didn't have to rush over. Which meant that she'd been sitting here, waiting for an indeterminate amount of time. Waiting, except for all the times she got up to check on Grendel.

She'd folded her arms across her stomach at one point, though that had been stopped as soon as Vera found herself running a thumb along her left arm, where it had been scraped bloody and raw. The living room looked normal, had looked normal once all the sand had been cleaned up. It had taken a while (Vera was fairly certain she'd be cleaning sand up for months yet), but eventually, everything went back to normal. She took a deep breath.

That entirely wasn't true. Not everything went back to normal. But Vera was leaving, for almost a week, and wanted to try and set things right before then. So there was a canister of tea in the kitchenette for Janice, by way of apology. Vera wasn't good at verbal apologies. Vera wasn't particularly good at interacting with people, something that had been underscored in the days following the encounter with Sailor Taranis. There was an undertone in their relationship and that had shifted after that dreadful night.

She wasn't sure what had been said - or what hadn't been said - as Vera had been suffering from a mild concussion at the time. Janice didn't want to talk about it, which was hardly unexpected. Janice never wanted to talk about anything that even touched on emotions or how she was feeling.

The phone rang, jerking Vera out of her thoughts. It was Janice, explaining that something had come up and that she wouldn't be able to come over. There was a smile on her face while Vera reassured the other girl that it was fine, it really hadn't been anything important, Janice could just stop by some other time. After the phone conversation had ended ('Are you sure?' 'Yes, yes, it's fine.'), she sighed and looked at the tea still sitting on her counter.

Next time. With another sigh, she went to go ask her neighbor if they could please look after her cat while she was on vacation, at least until Janice got her note. Which she wrote as soon as she'd gotten back, elegant script flowing over paper to explain what needed to be done, as well as why she'd left and how to get a hold of her.

Vera was gone the next morning.

SOLO RP: Faded Memories

The green plain that spread around her was familiar in a heart-breaking way that she would never be able to explain. Perhaps especially to herself, as Vera did not in any way recognize the landscape around her. All she'd been able to figure out was that it was familiar and made her wistfully, nostalgically sad. Maybe it was a combination of places from her childhood. She didn't really remember living anywhere with such open space, however. Her mother was a city girl through and through, pining for civilization anytime they'd visited somewhere with fewer than a million people.

But that wasn't important. Closing her dark purple eyes, Vera smiled. It felt like home here, felt like she belonged. If not here exactly, than she belonged wherever this happened to be. It was too bad it wasn't real, Vera mused as she opened her eyes, taking a deep breath of the clean and crisp air. It was scented with something else familiar, a flowery smell that somehow called up thoughts of incense. She had to be dreaming; no place this perfect existed, surely. It had to be something from her memories. The scent must have been a perfume her mother had worn at some point.

There was a wind blowing, suddenly, whipping the ends of her hair behind her, carrying with it a different scent, one that made Vera frown. It smelled of fire, of smoke, of something burning. In front of her, the scenery slowly changed, turning from grassy plain to that of a city.

One that was on fire, clearly the source of the smell and the wind. It was only then that Vera noticed how silent everything was; there was no crackle from the wood as the buildings were consumed, and there had been no sound when the wind had blown earlier. There were no people either, and Vera shivered and hugged herself tightly. The dream of the grassy plain was familiar. She'd had it before, before the comas had started. She hadn't had it since, and the teen wasn't entirely sure she welcomed the return. Not if this was how it was going to go.

A few minutes passed while Vera stood in the center of the city, watching it burn. She'd tried to move, but found it difficult, like moving underwater.

"Remember," came a voice from behind her, and she spun, finally able to move quickly. There was a figure standing there, but Vera could not make out any details. It was blurred, shadowed, and utterly unaffected by the fire as it strode closer to Vera. "Remember
this place, remember these people, and remember who you are."

The pronouncement to remember was met with a blank face, something of a speciality of Vera's. The figure smiled a bit (the shadows shifted slightly) and spoke again. "You can't hear me yet, can you?" Vera's head nodded jerkily. It - she? why was Vera so certain that this was a female? - smiled again, wider, and nodded in understanding. "Soon."

"Who...?" Vera tried to ask, but between one blink and the next, she found herself awake and staring at the ceiling of her apartment's bedroom. Shaken, she got out of bed for a drink of water, sitting at her kitchen table until the sun came up, unwilling to go back to sleep.

SOLO RP: It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

The whispering had started again, from the snowglobes scattered arond Vera's apartment. Well, they had been placed in various rooms, but now all four of them were lined up on the coffee table next to the sofa Vera was curled up on. She had made a makeshift blanket nest, one that Olive was happily exploring as the cat's personal Everest. Vera, on the other hand, had slipped into a light doze and had initially assumed the renewed voice had been a product of her mind. It wouldn't have been the first time, certainly.

But no, it had been the snowglobes. Again. With a sigh, Vera struggled to free herself from the blanket while not burying her kitten, who was emitting disgruntled little meeps anyway. "Sorry," the teen murmured, picking Olive up and setting her on top of the now Vera-less banket mound. Olive mewed and settled down for a nap of her own while the human stared at the snowglobes. She hadn't quite caught what they had said before she woke up, but it was repeating.

Take them there... town square...

Take them there... I’ll be there...

Purple eyes stared incredulously at the snowglobe in front of her. Go to the town square, a this time of night, in the cold? Yeah, right. For one thing, she was already in her warm flannel pajamas, even though it wasn't really that late. She'd decided to put on the pastel blue outfit earlier, having decided that not only was she not going anywhere tonight, no one would be coming to visit her, either.

Her cell phone rang suddenly, buzzing across the table until it bumped into one of the snowglobes. Startled, it took the pink-haired girl a few fumbled tries before she was able to pick it up and answer it. "Hello?" she asked tentatively. "No, I. It's only. Yes, thank," she tried to say in reply to whoever had called, sentences cut off as the other person talked over her. "Mother, it's still the twenty-fourth here," she finally cut in, rubbing her forehead with a free hand. In the background, she could hear the lively chatter and not quite obnoxiously loud Christmas music from whatever party her mother had deigned to grace with her presence.

"I got the package," Vera said, leaning back against the sofa. "Of course I didn't open it." That was a lie; she'd opened it and immediately delegated the gifts inside for the local Goodwill. Helene had sent some appalling couture outfit, something her daughter would never wear. "No, nothing from him." Another lie. She'd gotten a card from her father, one that had likely been arranged by his secretary. He hadn't signed it, and there was no note inside, only a check for a thousand dollars.

A quick shift let her burrow her feet under the blanket while her mother talked. "Sounds like fun," she replied noncomittally. "What time is it there?" After midnight, obviously, if Helene had called to wish her a Merry Birthday, as she so wittily called it, year after year. "I don't want to keep you. No, it's fine. Thanks for calling. Merry Christmas," Vera said as the call ended. She stared at her cellphone for a long moment, desperately wanting to just throw it against a wall. Instead, she set it back down on the coffee table and sighed. She wasn't looking forward to tomorrow. She hadn't for years.

Not since her parents had divorced and she'd spent most holiday seasons alone. This year wouldn't be much different, really. Janice had said she'd be coming over, probably in the afternoon, which would be nice. Not the same, but still nice. "At least you're here," Vera said with another sigh, rubbing a thumb over Olive's head, who pressed against it while purring happily.

All Vera Valentine wanted for Christmas was for it to be over.
