This is clearly the weyr of a young rider. Situated on the outside of the bowl, the place is tiny; there is only enough room for a desk, a hammock, and storage for clothes and a few possessions. Most of the room is clean, but made homely by rugs on the floor and a hanging depicting dragons battling the Thread on one wall. The desk, however, is a scene of chaos though conceivably it could appear organized to the right eyes. Towards the exit of the weyr there is a very large dragon bed, possibly the size of it is the reason this pair was assigned these quarters. Currently there is nobody around, and despite it's homey touches, over all the weyr manages to give the impression of a place that is used to sleep and work in; there are no chairs to recline in, nor any bottles of wine stashed around the place. Comfortable though it is, this weyr is clearly a functional place, not a haven of relaxation.

C'mor

Basics

Given name: Conomor
Rider name: C'mor
Age: 18 turns
Sex: Male
Orientation: 0 (heterosexual)
Rank: Wingrider

Appearance

Height: 5’10”
Build: Well muscled, broad shouldered
Hair: Black, coarse
Eyes: Dark brown
Skin: Deep tan
Face: Unremarkable, but strong jawed
Detailed appearance: C'mor is of middling height, strongly built and darkly tanned. His eyes are a deep shade of brown, steadily calculating, brightly intelligent, and full of quiet confidence in himself. His hair is black and usually worn in corn rows that fall to a little past jaw length. When it is loose, his hair is thick, coarse and straight. He usually dresses in shades of black and grey, and everything he owns is practical. He is not handsome, but his bulk and the self assurance with which he carries himself ensure that he is seldom overlooked for being plain once he has been picked out of a crowd.

Relationships

Parents: (male green rider 39) (female blue rider 44) (foster mother 42)
Siblings: None
Other notable family: None
Significant other: None
Significant friends: Veyes

Personality

Likes: Friendly company, dragons, reading, learning
Dislikes: Laziness, excessive ego, false modesty, liars
Quote: “I might be built like a watch-wher, but that doesn’t mean I think like one.”
Character tracks: Make a move Faith of the heart

Extended personality: Conomor is confident, near impossible to rattle and quietly intelligent. He respects only those who he feels have earned his esteem, but is sensible enough to be polite to and quietly obey those above him even if he doesn’t think they deserve their position. This said, he will questions orders he finds truly foolish without fear of the consequences. By and large, he prefers being a leader over being a follower but when he is unfamiliar with a situation or task he is quite happy to step back and let someone else take over, and learn about whatever it is by watching them.

He is unshakably loyal to his friends, but often has trouble letting go of a grudge no matter how petty it might be. Not given to witty repartee his dislike is shown bluntly, usually either by ignoring the offending party or by simply telling them to go away and let him be. He is as blunt with his friends as he is with his foes, and has lost one or two over the years thanks to his tendency not to take their side if he feels they were in the wrong, and or to tell them plainly when they’re being stupid. This said, he is also very honest and open with praise and affection; honesty in word and deed is one of the cornerstones of his life.

He is fond of reading almost anything he an get hold of, and spends much of his free time absorbed in scrolls. When he isn’t lost in learning however, he enjoys the company of others. He is happy just to listen if someone has something interesting to say, and equally he is happy to chat to almost anyone. Small-talk however isn’t exactly his strong suit, so he isn’t the best at keeping a casual conversation going for long.

History

C'mor is the son of a male green rider and a female blue rider; the product of a mating flight. Though his parents had no romantic interest in one another at all, when his mother found out she was pregnant they became good friends. As they were close, and wished to remain close to their son, C'mor knows his blood parents better than many do but they do not fill the role of parents for him. The one who does is his foster mother, a mere drudge but a loving, good-humored and hard-working woman with whom he gets along excellently.

Ever since he can remember, C'mor’s life has been centered around his ambition of becoming a dragonrider. To this end, his free time over the turns has been dedicated as much to learning all the dragon lore he can as to anything else. He first asked permission to stand for a hatching at fourteen turns - he did not consider himself mature enough before this - but thanks to a series of badly timed illnesses and injuries he did not even make it to a Touching until mid way through his sixteenth turn. He failed to Impress at his first hatching, but the second time he stood on the sands, bronze Naedreth chose him as his lifemate and rider.

Naedreth

User Image

Basics

Name: Naedreth
Sex: Male
Rank: Wingrider

Appearance

Length: 37’6”
Height: 12’3” to the shoulder
Build: Muscular
Detailed appearance: Naedreth has matured into a fine young bronze. Power is obvious in every line of his body; he might not be the fastest or most agile dragon ever to fly, but he possesses enormous strength and stamina. Though his wings are very large, there is a great deal of Naedreth to lift off the ground and were they much smaller he would probably struggle to stay off the ground. At long last his proud bearing truly suits him; he is the very image of a regal bronze. He has grown into his confidence as well; his great self-assurance is clearly evident, but softened to be reassuring rather than intimidating by the kindness so often visible in his bright eyes.

Personality

Likes: C’mor, Naedreth, people in general, being scrubbed
Dislikes: Uktenath, being itchy
Quote: “Of course they are looking, Mine, we are the best!”
Character tracks: Heat

Extended personality: Despite his high-ranking color, Naedreth is one of the more friendly dragons of the clutch. Quite charismatic, this dragon is fairly good-natured, albeit slightly snobbish. It's not that he thinks less of any other dragon -- no, he treats all dragons with respect and courtesy, especially they ladies -- it's just that he is just the best dragon there is. Always holding himself in a proud, regal manner, it's slightly surprising that he doesn't come across as being more obnoxious than he does. Perhaps it's just the fact that he's so charismatic and does treat everyone the same that he's so well liked.

In a wing, Naedreth will most certainly want to be in control. He's a natural leader, and won't settle for anything less than the best. While he CAN work under someone else, he won't like it too much, but will never challenge anyone for power, wishing to achieve it the right way. If (or when, as he would certainly tell you) he becomes wingleader (and perhaps weyrleader) he'll certainly lead the most powerful, useful wing of them all, as he's got natural skills in keeping dragons together and keeping moral high.

When it comes to getting what he wants, Naedreth will be calm, but firm, using more wily tactics to get it, unlike the Death Adder. They're a good balance, each putting the other in his place if they get too bold (which Naedreth is likely to do) or if they get too stubborn (which is Uktenath to a T), and while they snap at each other (the other bronze much more physical than Naedreth himself, who will make snide remarks to the other), the two are (reluctantly) close, each the other's rival.

His relationship with his brother, the Death Adder, is a complicated one -- while they fight on a constant, hissing at each other petulantly over the simplest of things such as who gets the best meat, they also share an odd understanding of each other that goes beyond normal hatchlings. It's with a reluctance that they understand each other, and while they don't understand the other's motives all the time, should one be scolded or accosted by a dragon wishing to assert their dominance, the other will quickly step in to defend them viciously. They make quite a pair. If only they could realize it and use it to their advantage.

Why Me?

Naedreth is friendly, yet ambitious. This is a bronze who needs someone not as rough around the edges as most leaders tend to be, someone who can get along with people how he gets along with other dragons (if perhaps a little less prideful). Conomor is friendly, yet knows what he wants, and wants to be a leader, something that Naedreth can relate to and looks up to. He can relate to the calm, but firm attitude that he has, and will compliment it well. Naedreth will strive to make take Conomor as far as he can take them, both in flight and leadership, and will enjoy being with His as well. With their charisma and ambition, they will go far.

European adder

Vipera berus is a venomous viper species that is extremely widespread and can be found throughout most of Western Europe and all the way to Far East Asia. They are not regarded as highly dangerous; bites can be very painful, but are seldom fatal. The specific name, berus, is New Latin and was at one time used to refer to a snake, possibly the grass snake, Natrix natrix.

Relatively thick-bodied, adults grow to 60 cm (2 ft) in length with an average of 55 cm (22 in). Maximum size varies per region. The color pattern varies, ranging from very light-colored specimens with small incomplete dark dorsal crossbars to melanistic individuals that are entirely dark and lack any apparent dorsal pattern. However, most have some kind of zigzag dorsal pattern down the entire length of the body and tail. The head usually has a distinctive dark V or X on the back. A dark streak runs from the eye to the neck and continues as a longitudinal series of spots along the flanks.

Occasionally, individuals will reveal their presence with a loud and sustained hissing, hoping to warn off potential aggressors. Often, these turn out to be pregnant females. When threatened, the front part of the body is drawn into a S-shape to prepare for a strike.

Myth

The ornamented beads of vitreous paste found throughout Britain, and commonly known as "adder-beads," were formerly believed by the peasantry to have been made by adders, and to be of the greatest efficacy in the cure of numerous diseases. It was believed "that about Midsummer Eve (tho’ in the time they do not all agree) ‘tis usual for snakes to meet in Companies, and that by joyning heads together, and hissing, a kind of Bubble is form’d like a ring about the head of one of them, which the rest by continual hissing blow on till it comes off at the tail, and then it immediately hardens and resembles a glass ring; which whoever finds (as some old women and children are perswaded) shall prosper in all his undertakings.

The adder-stone, or the beads and rings substituted in its place, is thought by superstitious people to possess many wonderful properties. It is used as a charm to insure prosperity, and to prevent the malicious attacks of evil spirits. In this case it must be closely kept in an iron box to secure it from the Fairies, who are supposed to have an utter abhorrence at iron. It is also worn as an amulet about the necks of children to cure sore eyes, the chincough, and some other diseases; and to assist them in cutting their teeth. It is sometimes boiled in water as a specific for diseases in cattle; but frequently the cure is supposed to be performed by only rubbing with the stone the part affected.

Gilden

User Image

The egg

Personality: Gilden is fairly peaceful for a flit. She investigates new things with interest but doesn't poke her nose where it doesn't belong. She is deeply attached to C'mor and hates to be away from him for longer than it takes her to deliver a message somewhere for him. She is also very protective of him, and anyone who makes him angry can expect to have a red-eyed queen screaming angrily and them. She has taken well to training and can reliably retrieve small items, deliver messages, and show her owner what she is seeing at any time. Were C'mor a less moral man, she would make an excellent little spy. As it is, she is a useful friend, and quite capable of guarding important places or objects from people she does not recognize or sees as a threat.

History: Conomor acquired Gilden's egg at a gather in Ista Hold in his sixteenth turn. The merchant selling a quintet of eggs was wholly unaware of the value of his goods and was asking a mere half mark for each. Conomor was the first to buy one of the eggs, but paid three quarters of a mark rather than a half because he respected the merchant for not raising his prices once he saw how eager people were.

I am... blown away. Lost for words. I know a lot of words, a lot of things, but right now I can seem to remember anything save possibly my own name, and him. My name is now C'mor, and he is Naedreth. I've never seen a dragon like him. I know he's clumsy and awkward like any hatchling but he looks beautiful to me.

It's incredible. I guess my bad luck finally did run out. A dragon chose me, and not just any dragon; Naedreth! He took his time about it, hatched first but chose... was it third? Fourth? I don't remember, it's a bit of a blur really...

Of course I took my time! I had to make sure I chose the best Mine! I knew you were when I saw you, but I felt I should at least look at the others as well, and after that I saw no hurry! You weren't going anywhere, nobody else was going to take you, because they all knew you were Mine, and that it was not for them to take you away!

...Well, yes, I suppose there was no rush for you. No other dragon would have chosen me. Still, unusual, and more strangeness went with that hatching too. People fainting on the sands, coming down from the stands - idiots! Upset a little green and made her injure people - and the queen bowed to a green when she knocked into her. My head's still spinning from it all, and I can't stop grinning like an idiot. My life is... perfect now. One day I shall be a fully fledged rider. One day... one day I might just be able to make a difference to how things are done around here, though at least this space crisis will be sorted out soon. Had better be in any case.

We shall make a difference Mine! I just need to get big enough to fly and then everyone will listen to us; we shall earn our position Mine, we shall get there because we are the best, and because we shall never give up!

Yes. Well, certainly we'll never give up and I think you're the best. Wouldn't say the same of me. I'm quite clever, I like to think I have good ideas, but I wouldn't say I'm 'best'. Bit of a nebulous thing anyway; best at what?

We are the best, that's all! Not at everything maybe, but at the important things. I suppose some dragons might be better looking than me, though I am very handsome, but none would lead as well as I will.

We shall see I suppose. One day... one day we'll soar and after that, who knows?

It must be hard not Impressing... It is hard, I remember. It was only the one time for me, but many stand for turns without finding their dragon. Kella seems like a nice girl, a bit irresponsible from what she said of herself but good-hearted and decent and intelligent. I have hopes for so many people in this next clutch, but who knows if any of the people I hope for will find their lifemates out there this time, or ever.

Either they will or they will not. You should not worry about them too much. The ones you want to find lifemates are deserving Mine, or you would not hope for them, but there is nothing we can do. Either their dragons will be born, or they will not.

True. There is one thing I can do though; watch them at the hatchings they stand for and hope for them. It might not actually make any difference really, but perhaps it will make them feel better to know another person in the stands is rooting for them? I don't know, both hatchings I stood for I was too dazed by everything to wonder who might be watching me. Humm. Still. It's all I can do, so I'll do it.

Great shells and stars! The idiot! The stupid, selfish, idiot! Some idiot candidate, the one that wanted to form some sort of party crew with herself as it's little queen, slunk into the hatching sands and touched the eggs. The eggs that are still soft! Cheoth's roars can be heard throughout the Weyr, and I'm not surprised! How could anyone be so stupid, and so disrespectful? She thought herself too important to wait for the Touching I suppose, thought this would give her a better chance at Impressing. I bet she fondled the Queen egg most.

The dragons, most of them, are furious. Not as much as Cheoth of course, but that would be pretty difficult. I can't seem to get Naedreth to calm down... Of course being him he's still looking regal, but that doesn't change how angry he is. Angry doesn't cover how he feels, how I feel, so how must Favan and Cheoth feel? Some brat of a candidate, almost a woman grown, thought it was a good idea to creep in and have a poke at a soft-shelled clutch. She had no right! It makes me feel nauseous to think of her sneaking in there and violating them, all the while thinking herself so very clever. Surely she will not be allowed to stay here, I cannot imagine how she would be allowed.

If she is not sent away, we shall drive her away. This shall not be forgotten, not ever. She does not deserve to breathe the same air as dragons and riders, let alone to have the chance to become a rider herself! She will be sent away. She must be sent away.

Or at the very least prevented from ever standing again. By the shell of the first egg, if I ever see her standing on the sands I shall be hard pressed not to leap down and drag her away. The selfish little feline. She must pay, and dearly.

It could have been worse. I keep telling myself that. It could have been worse. Only a few candidates were injured. Only one egg failed to hatch. Only one dragonet screamed and went between. That girl. I can't believe it. It could have been worse and I suppose I was expecting something bad to happen, but this? It's too much, it would be horrible were I still a weyrbrat but as a rider... I can feel everything he feels, and what he feels is... I can't describe.

He died! Why did he die? Why did he go away without finding His? Why did that girl kill him? It's wrong, it's all wrong! It hurts so much, everyone hurts. Why did she do it?

I can't understand either. I wonder if she feels any guilt for what she did. She must do, surely anyone would. The feast was... loud. I'm glad so many people were able to set aside what happened today but I couldn't, it was miserable. At least I was able to speak with wingleader S'kagi about a few things, that gave me food for thought if not any comfort about today, or they way things are in general...

I can't forget the scream that blue gave. I've never seen a dragonet go between before. I hope I never do again. That noise. I can still hear it, I swear. That poor blue. He shouldn't have died. Why did she do it? It's all wrong.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 08, 2009 6:10 am

It's a hard thing to come to terms with. I suppose the memory will be less sharp eventually, less painful, but right now... All of this, all piling up, it's a lot to cope with. That poor blue, the cramped conditions, knowing that there are people trying to make life worse: it's hard. That doesn't mean I'm giving up, of course not, it just means I'm tired, and that I have a lot of work to do. Ista defense league; sounds a bit pretentious really but the name works. I know there must be people like me out there, willing to work to improve life for as many as possible, all they need is coordination. I can't start sooner than today, so I've started spreading the message.

People will follow us, people will see that it is the right thing to be doing. For that blue... there is nothing we can do but for everyone else there are things we can do. We will work extra hard, we will help people with their work too, and others will follow our example. We cannot force the lazy or nasty ones to help, but we can be a good example to other good people.

Yes, we can. In the end... there isn't a lot of major change I can make yet. One day maybe I'll be a wingleader, it's possible that one day Naedreth will catch a senior queen but for now, we're weyrlings, and so we'll have to start small. I will try to get an audience with Helirra, ask her what's going on. I don't really expect to be given the chance but if I don't try I'll never know. That can wait for a short while though; first I want to get this... whatever it is started, this effort. Even if all my efforts are just a drop in the ocean I'll make them anyway, I'll give it my all. After all if you don't try, what's the point?

Naedreth's first flight. He was brilliant! Not perfect, there was a bit of wobbling, and the landing wasn't too graceful but for his first try he did amazingly, I think he did anyway. Funny how much closer the future seems now, now that we're really on our way to flying together. I want... I want things to get better, I want to help things get better. What I'm doing with the defense league, and what I've persuaded friends of mine to do is good but... I want more. Yes, fine, call me ambitious and too proud for being sure I'll get into a position to do real good some day but I can't help wanting that, or believing in myself and Naedreth. I don't want power for the sake of power, I don't want it so people will call me sir, do what I tell them, so I can get a big Weyr, nice things for myself, hangers on. I don't want any of that, I just want to change things, for the better. I'm sure it's all harder than it looks, I know I've got a lot to learn, but I'll get there.

Was it pretentious of me to start up a movement when I'm just a weyrling? I don't see it that way, but people have rolled their eyes. What does a stupid kid know? Maybe not much, but nobody else was doing anything, so I did, regardless of my position. It's not like I'm styling myself leader of Helpful Wing or anything, I just organize things, get people involved where I can, find out where more help is needed, where extra work could be put in to make this place nicer... I just want to do something, even if it makes me look like I think too much of myself. I can't just sit around doing nothing!

Of course not! People can think what they want about us, but one day they will see that we are great. It might take some time, but one day people will look back at what we do now, and say that they should have known we were going to become leaders. We care, and we are intelligent and powerful; all the things leaders should be! We will get there.

Yes... Quite possibly. Naedreth has the qualities to lead a wing, even a Weyr, and with more experience and knowledge I think I will too. Not that becoming a weyrleader has anything to do with leadership merit, all that counts is a dragon that's good at flights. Who thought that one up I'm sure I'll never know; probably the man with the biggest bronze who nobody dared argue with.

Anyway, yes, for the first time today, Naedreth flew, and it was amazing. Feeling the wind, looking down at the ground, the strong beat of his wings... incredible. One day soon I'll be with him when he flies. Whatever else the future might hold, we'll fly together. Somehow that's very comforting. No matter what happens, we'll be together.
