European Adder Egg This egg is easily one of the largest of the clutch, it's size rivaling the Death Adder's for largest (excluding the queen, of course). Smooth in shell, it has a distinct zigzag pattern circling it's shell, the pattern starting small and radiating out to be largest in the middle before tapering back in at the bottom, almost like it's coiled up like a snake. It's colors alternate between being a pale yellow to a light brown, mingling quite well down the egg shell in an alternating pattern, with the zigzag being a dark brown. It sits at the very front of the clutch, seated upright, with a slight tilt toward the Death Adder egg.
Death Adder Egg While this egg is also one of the largest of the clutch, it's a little harder to tell with this one. Laying almost completely on it's side in the sands, the top of this egg almost touches the European Adder's shell, it's bottom laying on top of the sand as opposed to being a little buried. While the European Adder's egg was pale in color and smooth, the Death Adder's is a little rougher seeming, it's colors much more dark. The colors alternate from being a deep orange and a dark brown, blending a little more sharply, with the slightly jagged lines of brown hues being much thin than the range of oranges and orange-browns. This egg sits next to the European Adder egg, almost directly in front of the Coral Snake egg, nearly blocking half of it's clutchmate's shell. Coral Snake Egg The small coral snake egg is all but hidden behind the pair of adders. The banded egg is alternating shades of red, yellow and black and would be quite striking, if it let anyone actually see it. Yes, it’s as if the smaller egg doesn’t even want to be seen and is more than happy to let its larger siblings have the limelight.
Milk Snake Egg If you weren’t looking closely, you could easily mistake the milk snake egg for the coral snake egg. However, the yellow, red and black bands alternate differently and this egg is just a touch smaller. Also not as shy, the milk snake egg isn’t letting the adder pair outshine it. Still beside the coral snake, this one is enough to the side that it is clearly visible from all angles.
Green Pit Viper Egg This green speckled egg sits by itself, staunchly refusing to be associated with its siblings. A medium sized egg, the green pit viper egg is tipped back and seems to give off a very strong leave-me-alone aura. Of course, just because it needs its own space does not mean it’s off to the side. Still preferring to receive some sort of attention, it’s sits slightly to the side of its mother, barely in sight?
Bandybandy Egg The bandybandy egg is another small egg, though this one is not hiding. Placed in front of the others, it is not far away from its siblings and is rolled completely on its side, facing down and towards the group, as though playing a silly joke. A rather plain egg, it is off-white with large blocks of obsidian patterned neatly up the side of the egg.
Boa Constrictor Egg A medium sized egg! Amidst all of its siblings, being medium makes it look, well, rather large! Of course, it doesn't challenge the adder pair, but it certainly does to well for itself, leaving many to wonder the color of the dragon inside. The egg is brown with varying shades, darker bands surrounding larger, lighter circles. There are small dark triangles littered among the circle sets.
Carpet Python Egg Tilted on its axis, this dark egg can't seem to decide whether it wants to be on its side or standing tall with the others. Mottled with bright yellow, it's hard to miss. Not particularly small, it's shuffled in with the group quite near the milk snake. A good push could probably knock it down, so be careful!
King Cobra Egg Last but not least, the sight everyone came to see, the Queen egg! Average-sized as far as Queen eggs go, she is shuffled towards the back, much closer to her mother than everyone else. Even in the protective shadow of the dragon, it's not hard to see her egg is colored darker than usual. The darkness makes the golden shine that much more obvious than usual and the bottom of the egg is dramatically lighter.

The eggs were finally ready. Took their sweet time, those dragonets did! But one could never rush a Hatching, oh no. Why, he doubted if those Candidates even knew how sharding lucky they were to be able to touch them! Prevented some of the more brutal maulings, or so it was rumored. "All right, you've all slept enough for one day! Up with you, come on, it's time to touch the eggs!" He'd started with the ladies first for a reason this time; he had a bit of extra wisdom to impose upon them. "Remember, each of you are expected to briefly touch the Queen egg! And don't forget to bow to their mother first, either!"
He'd stride out without a backward glance--it would be they who suffered and risk not Impressing if they didn't hurry onto the sands! The boys were next, and Z'nal was soon bellowing, only pausing to frown at all the lumps still tucked under their covers. "Time to touch the eggs, you'll be late if you dally much longer!" He'd lean over to yank the sheets off one lazy fool, snorting as the lad groaned before he headed back outside towards the sands. They'd all better hurry up, or else!
Jiriar, however, now found himself freezing and nursing aching ears from how fardling loud the man had been. But oh! The Touching! A frantic scrabble of limbs, a yelp as he found himself caught in his sheets--and the young man fell to the stone with a crash, groaning audibly against the stone. This was not a good day. His black eye throbbed plaintively as though in agreement.

Kytara jumped to her feet and darted out of the room. She had learned well at the last Touching to move fast. She did her best to keep up with the grouchy old Candidate Master. Shards! If only he pulled that stick out of his... She shook her head. No. That wasn't right at all. She stopped only long enough to check that she was presentable at the very least. Her light blue eyes danced over her reflection and she nodded. That would do. She hopped back out into the hallway and hurried to catch back up. Looking around she was a little shocked to see she wasn't alone.

Lately,Veyes had been sitting up taking his turn in the shifts that Mal and he did to makes sure that each one of them ended up with a good night sleep. But things had died down a little since the eggs had landed on the sands and for that he was thankful. Occassionally, he even felt some things were getting back to normal and he hoped eventually things would be forgotten.
This time he wasn't even surprised as Z'nal hollered in to the boy's dorm The man was pure vinegar but Veyes wasn't about to do anything that sparked the man's interest. Trying to be inconspicious, he hurried out of the shared alcove and made his way with the masses of boys to the sands one more. This time, he wasn't as worried about the people around him. Not nearly as uncomfortable as the first time. Yes, he had changed just a little. This time, he knew even though he wasn't as popular, people were just more interested in the eggs than himself.
Maybe...this time, things would go better? Maybe one of these eggs would hold that perfect match? His creative mind explored every possibility as soon as his feet hit the sands and he peered at the eggs in front of him.
These eggs weren't nearly as colorful as the last batch; these were more earthy and grounded in their tones but all beautiful in their pristine oval shapes. But even before he took any steps closer to them, he turned and sought out the golden Queen. This was one thing that he had drilled in to his own head; to follow the rules that would keep him safe here. Each one had a pretty good reason behind it making them easy to follow....No Talking, Bow to the Queen and show your respect, and don't linger to long at any one egg.
Bowing at his waist, he took a deep breath and waited for a moment before rising up to gaze up at the lovely Queen once more with a respectful nod then moved toward one of the eggs. He knew she'd probably just barely noticed him in the midst of all the others but at least he did things right.
Soon he approached the first egg and sighed slowly while kneeling beside it. He actually was the first to touch this very large egg much to his surprise and it was the one he had told Nerhen that he thought was a bronze...The zig zags upon it; his fingers traced as if they were the lines of a map upon the plains of Pern. We would have the whole world to travel, he thought with a tender smile. He dreamt of a day that he'd soar with his lifemate. I want to change the world one day...but I'm not perfect. I still have much I'm learning. But, I hope that you will consider me...or maybe one of your brothers or sisters will. Thanks for listening...See you on the sands.
Withdrawing from this egg, he took to his feet and started looking for the next available egg. This touching had a profoundly different feeling to him. Maybe it was because he had gotten over the anxiety of the first? Or maybe this time he realized it might take a few times before the right one would arrive.

Firyal and her roommates were quick to rise when Z'nal informed them it was time for the Touching. Because of the lice outbreak Firyal had taken to wearing her hair in a turban, and although it left her hair disgustingly greasy, it meant she hadn't had to cut eight years of growth. It also meant that getting dressed went much more quickly as she twisted her hair up into its fabric wrap with quick, oft-practiced movements and tucked the end into the back part at the nape of her neck. The rest of dressing was just pulling on a pair of trousers and a tunic and sliding her moccasins onto her feet. She would never make the mistake of showing up barefoot ever, ever again.
She and her three roommates filed into the hallway with the Candidates and followed Z'nal to the Hatching Grounds, whispering amongst themselves. Her roommates had long since forgiven her infraction the night of the last Hatching and were just as excited for this one as Firyal for the same reasons: there was a chance to Impress a dragon, and Firyal would no longer be on privy duty. They were as tired of her unique privy scent as she was, though they were polite enough not to mention it, even when she did. There were advantages to having pleasant roommates. They had also been instrumental in keeping the other girls' unpleasantries from getting too out of hand when it came to Firyal's possessions.
At the Sands the Candidates fell quiet, and Firyal did the same as she stepped onto the heated area and made her preliminary bow to the queen who lay regally beside her eggs. Firyal recognized this queen, too, though she knew the golden dragon would not remember her. After all, there were so many Candidates Firyal herself didn't usually bother to keep track of them. After bowing to the beautiful gold Firyal made her way to the largest egg in the clutch, the queen egg. Its close proximity to her mother would probably make the newer Candidates nervous, but Firyal was not. She could not remember the last time an adult dragon had savaged a human, and the mother would have her bondmate with her, reminding her that the Candidates meant her children no harm.
Standing before the dark golden egg Firyal felt for the first time since her first Touching a kind of electric excitement. Nothing as dramatic as an instantaneous bond between herself and the young gold within the egg. More like just a jolt of adrenaline. Things might be different this time. The cautious optimism was uncharacteristic, but something about this morning and this Touching gave her reason to hope. Maybe it was because the last Hatching had been so disastrous.
Whatever the reason, Firyal was reverent as she lay first her left palm and then her right as well on the surface of the gold egg. She did not close her eyes or try to force any sort of empathic contact between herself and the fetus, because she was fairly certain any sort of attempt on her part would bring her bronze firelizard zooming in, scolding her for leaving him while he slept. It was her fervent wish that he would remain asleep for the duration of the Touching.
As she relenquished her place beside the queen egg she noticed that the bottom of the egg was much paler than the top where she had placed her hands and smiled at the egg. She hoped the gold within found the right girl, even if it wasn't her. Though there was a large portion of her mind that hoped she would be the right girl, she reminded herself that there was a difference between optimism and foolishness, and she would do better to hope for a green, which was more than respectable for someone as unremarkable as she was.
Now, to visit the other eggs...

Tideal woke just before the Candidate Master or whomever was to usher them awake and send them on their way to participate in the touching. He ran a tally in his mind of what was expected, and most importantly expressing his respect to the mother of the clutch on arrival. The blond youth ran his fingers through thoroughly riffled hair in an attempt to smooth it, following the same gesture and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Tideal wasn't as anxious about this clutch as he was for the last, but he still buzzed with excitement. All there was to hope now was that no bumbling idiots decided to go on their merry way and forget their bowing to the queen or to be late of all things. Ruin it for them all.
Groaning, Tideal slid out of bed to dress then sit down and twiddle his thumbs till the call was made for the boys to join the eggs on the sands. As the summons was placed, Tideal waited impatiently for a moment till he heard the other boys grumbling and waking before he left the room to follow the Candidate Master and everyone else to the sands.
When he got there he noticed the startling difference in color and size of this clutch to the last. Many of these were browns and earthen tones, save for the reds on the pair smaller eggs in the back. He tore his eyes away for long enough to bow deeply to the queen. As he made his way behind only a few others. Tideal ran his hand across each egg in turn, savoring the warmth they emitted and the opportunity each shell concealed. He was especially fond of the two larger eggs, and paused at them only a moment longer than the others, relishing in their presence and imaging himself astride a big, handsome dragon.
The air was both still and throbbing at the same time. Emotions nearly as intense at the actual Hatching. This had a lighter feel of some manner of greeting party. Tideal mumbled a goodluck to the large pair of eggs and made to leave. In his distracted state he just about bumped into another candidate. Some taller and more muscular boy by the name of Veyes or something of that tune. Tideal made his way around the other and over to the next line of eggs that nestled in the sand. They were pretty, not as impressive as the two enormous eggs he visited a moment ago, but just as enthralling. He ran his palm along these as well, careful to touch lightly the egg that appeared ready to tip.

Actually, Mal hadn’t been completely honest with Veyes. This was only to be expected, since he was rarely completely honest with anyone, including himself. The thing about shifts… well… he had sort of stopped staying up for his ‘shift’. After all, the other Candidates had long ago lost interest in making his life miserable and, to the best of his knowledge, had stopped torturing Veyes as well. No reason for them both to stay up. He assumed that Veyes stayed up just because he liked it.
Aeron helped too, naturally. People tended to leave Mal alone when they realized that bothering him meant bothering with the large Bronze firelizard. When the call came out for the Touching, Mal had been taking a nap, the flit happily curled up at the foot of the cot with his little marble. No matter what Mal bribed Aeron with, the Bronze would not let go of that marble. That was fine; so long as he was biting that instead of his toes… Mal jerked awake at all the yelling, blearily wondering if Thread was falling already. Wait, what? Touching? Someone was touching someone else? Well, yeah, that certainly was a cause for yel…
OH! The eggs! Everything clicked in Mal’s mind as he dressed in a stupor and managed to stumble his way onto the Sands. Veyes had already rushed ahead, leaving Mal to sort of trundle along slowly afterwards. He managed to make his way close to Jiriar, close enough to see the other boy’s black eye. Mal had only recently gotten over one of his own, so he could feel a fair bit of sympathy. He opened his mouth to give some advice about making it go away, but then he remembered that talking was discouraged.
That is, they said discouraged. but what they really meant was, ‘Hey. Unless you want to get mauled, try to avoid this, alright?’. He settled for a smile before bowing deeply to the queen and shuffling off.
A bit mindlessly, he touched the eggs with one hand, since he wanted to go back to sleep. He tried not to dally because there were a lot of Candidates out there. Anyone dallying by an egg would slow up the line. But, since it was practically traditional to do so, he made a point to stop by one of the eggs, the showy Milk Snake egg.

Keira raced through the halls, her breath catching in her throat in her excitement. Another Hatching was occurring! What a joyous occasion! She smiled gleefully, passing by slower people in her unbridled glee. As she near the Grounds, she slowed, her head bowing slightly in respect as her feet touched the hot sands in which the eggs and their shining mother were located. She felt heat seem to scald her feet, awakening her even more to the fact that these sands had hosted countless numbers before them, all becoming mighty dragons who owned the sky. Keira's eyes went upward to look at the Queen and she bowed respectfully. "By the Egg, I ask for your permission, great one..." She whispered, her breath catching. She was excited, and it was written on her face.
Slowly, Keira straightened, and reached out gently to touch the golden colored egg, whispering both aloud and in her mind, reaching out in hopes of an answer, before backing away. The little Queen-to-be would find it's perfect match, even though she doubted it would be herself. "Your daughter will be as great as you." She said, looking up once more to the mother. She then turned her attention to the others. All the eggs were beautiful in their own ways, some smaller then the others, but just as equal.
She approached one of the largest eggs first, it's dark markings striking to her eyes. She ran her fingers across it, whispering words of praise at how it would grow, healthy and strong. She knew this dragon would be a beauty in it's own way.
As she looked past the dark egg, she noticed a vibrant red and black with the ribbons of black. Oh dear... She caressed the small egg lovingly. So small, but you'll be big, I'm sure of it! And Keira was. It was not right to doubt in a dragon, even if it was not hatched yet. Bad thoughts led to bad things.
Keira straightened, smiling. She was sure these dragons would be mighty!
The next one that caught her eyes seemed simple in it's egg pattern, but she liked it almost immediately. It was a quirky design which seemed whimsical. she brushed the egg, letting out a small laugh at her own thoughts. Be strong, little dragon!
Keira looked at the batch with a smile. Such a wild array! She thought with a grin.
She touched each with an equal passion, truly excited for when the time would come for them to hatch. Maybe it would be her time to be chosen, maybe not. But nonetheless, she would not let herself be put down. She had as much chance as the other candidates.
As she prepared to leave the ground, a whiteness with a strange array of patterns caught her eye. What a pretty egg. It seemed slightly far from the others. Letting her hands slide over the egg, she let them hug it in a sense on both sides. Why are you by yourself? She wondered. You're like me, it seems. So much to be put up to, but you're not gonna hide, even in plain sight. Good luck finding your chosen.
Kiera straightened with a smile, her hands still warm from the life within the eggs. She was happy, truly happy.

Riyinn didn't feel like rushing to many were doing so, and that put her more in the group then she needed to be. Tho, thinking back on the last hatching it didn't seem to matter if there was a large crowd when a dragonnet wanted who it wanted..
Even so she picked up the pace a bit rather that then have the candidate master on her for a week. Stopping at the entrance she took several large breaths then with a rush she stepped through. She could tell the sand was warm the change in temperature was easy enough. In the center stood the queen as proud as any, and below her littered her eggs. So few vs the others.
Walking forward but still a ways she bowed she was in no hurry still to piss them off. After she stood up seemed almost ages had passed. With a bit of a hop step she moved over to the side where some of the eggs were set. right away a small egg caught her eye, its bands of red yellow and black shocking stepping over she placed a hand on the egg for several moments she just stood there enjoying the heat.
Turning her head she focused on the 2 larger eggs these two seemed to be together vs the size of most they were huge, one egg seemed to be almost digging it seemed. Behind those rested another egg almost like the one she touched now. Brushing her head on all of them she moved around the group careful not to bump any. one by one she touched the eggs till she came to rest before the queen egg. It was dark gold bordering lighter her eyes followed the shadow up to the mother. Bowing again she approached it, seeming to almost test it. Finally after several moments she sighed then turned and walked a bit away turning for one last look at the clutch.

Elae, on the other hand, hadn’t been sleeping at all. The gossip of the dragonriders hinted that the Touching was going to occur soon and she didn’t want to miss a moment of it! To help pass the time, she played Patience with a set of cards. She wasn’t very good at it for many, many reasons. When the yelling finally started, she was one of the first to spring out of the girls’ dorm. Then she remembered to sidle back into the girls’ dorm to get some real clothes on instead of just a shift.
Right. Best not to get too excited about this. Still, she had trouble keeping still as she made her way towards the Hatching Grounds with all the other Candidates. It must have looked exceedingly odd to anyone watching from the air, this sort of mass migration of teenagers and young adults to one specific location. For some reason, Elae thought that someone with a funny accent ought to be commenting on it.
She bowed to the queen deeply, but didn’t offer any long poetical speeches to the dragon or her eggs. If she was meant to Impress at this Hatching, then she would Impress. If she didn’t… well, there would always be other ones. Pretty words----or lack thereof----wouldn’t affect her chances. Besides, she saved up her drama for the gossip. Speaking of gossip, she glanced around to see if Nan was there already. Ok, no more distra… oh… shiiiiny… Elae tilted her head to one side and briefly trailed her palm on the gold egg. She knew she had no chance of Impress the dragonet inside, but, hey. It was shiny!
And then she flounced off to touch the other eggs. In particular, she paid attention to… well… all of them. She paid more attention to people who went to one particular egg, however. People could tell you a lot about themselves by doing something like that…

Okassis had come to expect the rude awakening. Not just because that was what had happened the last time, but because he had gotten Z'nal's measure enough during his time in the Weyr to know that the Candidatemaster delighted in the discomfort of his charges, and would take very chance to exploit their weaknesses - love of sleep being an especially popular one. Honestly, the only surprise for Okassis was that he'd waited so long to pull everyone out of bed. A few hours earlier, and he would have had even the hardiest of Candidates crying out for pity klah! But even with such low expectations, Okassis awoke yawning, cursing Z'nal's name. Between his usual insomnia and the chaos of recent days, his sleep had been about as rejuvenating as laying awake and staring at the walls. It was just lucky for him that he was the odd man out sleeping on the floor, and thus had to be woken in order for anyone to get out - otherwise, he might well have dozed through the summons. Managing to scrabble out of bed, at least halfway dressed and awake enough to discern the direction that the rest of the Candidates were headed, Okassis arrived outside the Hatching Grounds. He wasn't so quick to dart inside as the last time, however; dwelling right outside a few minutes, he rubbed at his eyes and straightened out his shirt, pulling himself together. He didn't know if the extra bit of effort would have any effect on his odds when Hatching time came, but if nothing else, it was a sign of respect to the Queen and her brood not to be sloppy and falling-over tired. Once his hair (now grown a full inch long!) was smoothed down and the crust wiped from his eyes, Okassis entered the grounds. He was set comfortably in the middle of the pack of Candidates, but where many of them were hurried after their unexpected wake-up, Okassis was composed and purposeful as he placed himself a comfortable distance before the Clutch's mother. The very size of the gold dragon still gave him a private thrill, although it was no longer as profuse as when he'd first come to the Weyr. A few months of living among dragonfolk had desensitized him quickly. With something almost resembling grace, he addressed the Queen with a careful bow, taking his time to extend the motion from a nervous little bob to a smooth dip. His respects paid, the ex-Trader made way for the next line of Candidates to greet the Queen. He was surprised by the size of the clutch; there were so many more eggs this time, it seemed, and so many that were larger! Placing his hand on the nearest egg, the Green Pit Viper Egg, he regarded it curiously; then, meandering about with the attention span of a butterfly, offered a warm smile and friendly pat to the Carpet Python and Milk Snake Eggs as well. This was all to get him to where he wanted to be, though; the two enormous Adder eggs, with their radiant patterning and surprising size. Okassis approached the Death Adder Egg first, drawn by its size. Was there a bronze inside this? There must be! He remembered Galliath's egg, the large brown that S'van had Impressed. His egg had been smaller than this, he thought. Pressing both palms against it, he held still, trying to find some small motion beneath the shell, any sort of lucky sign.... Of course, none came. He hadn't really expected it anyway, Okassis told himself, letting his hands slide down and break away from the shell's side. Still, it was a very fine-looking egg; more subtle than some of the others, but still complex and impressive. Almost obligatorily, Okassis turned to the European Adder Egg next, laying a hand on it and willing good things to the inhabitant inside. It struck him as a bit odd that he felt driven to interact with so many of the eggs, when he'd barely bothered to touch two the last time; but then again, last time, one of those eggs had Impressed to his best friend. Even if none of these were meant for him - and he'd come to philosophize, he was a very particular sort of person, who had to be patient for that very particular dragon that would best suit his ambitions and abilities - one or two might meet with one of his friends in the Weyr. And he thought, he'd like to be a part of that, too; one more invisible connection, among so many. Smiling, Okassis stepped away, preparing to leave the grounds to the rest of the Candidates. Before he could make away, however, his eye caught on a few bright colors. Furrowing his brow, he wandered to the other side of the Adder Eggs. And right there - a tiny little thing, almost unseen behind its flashier brothers, the Coral Snake Egg sat. It was odd, Okassis puzzled, how easy it was to personify these eggs. Their placement was surely coincidence, how their mother had placed them; and yet, he couldn't help but imagine persons behind them. Loud or quiet, bold or shy, laid-back or serious. This one was certainly shy, he thought - stooping next to it a moment, the blond youth rubbed at his chin, examining it. Even the Pit Viper Egg hadn't made him hesitate to touch it, but he wondered if this one didn't prefer being unnoticed.... Too bad, he decided, grinning and giving it a careful stroke. You'll have to come out sometime and face people, so better not start out on the wrong foot, little guy. Guy or girl? So small, it was probably a girl.... But now he really was done. Standing up again, he moved away from the eggs, observing the rest of the Candidates and keeping out of the way. He wondered how long it would be yet, until the eggs would be ready to hatch - soon, maybe. Okassis suppressed the feeling of doubt in his belly, that he might not Impress again. Whether he did or did not, didn't matter. Just so long as he was in the game, he was doing right.

Another clutch, another Touching.
At the Candidate Master's loud wake-up call, Jaidev stirred amongst his nest of blankets. Ever since the overcrowding and shifting of the rooms, Jai had found himself the one on the floor. Part of it was because he was too nice- he figured he had a proper bed for the last few Hatchings, so why not let some of the newer arrivals have a turn at it? After all, he was used to less-than comfortable sleeping arrangements- back when he worked with the drudges, he didn't have to most cozy sleeping space. He could take it. The other part, though, was probably because he still wasn't good at standing up for himself. Still, the floor wasn't that bad! Well, aside from the backaches, marauding dust bunnies, Trundlebugs and Crawlers...
Okay, the floor kind of sucked.
But... it was alright. Suffering (along with hard work) made a person stronger, right? And Jai certainly needed to be stronger if he ever wanted to Impress! This was just building character...along with back problems. But there was another Touching today and on its heels, a Hatching! That was certainly something to be excited about...not that he'd had luck the last three times. He sighed at the thought as he got ready. Don't get down. You've had plenty of time for that, his mind warned. Right now...he had to keep his mind on the game. He could worry afterwards.
Jaid ran fingers through his short hair. At least one good thing that came of his panic-induced hack job was that the hair was much quicker and easier to make presentable in the morning. Once dressed and ready, Jaidev took a deep breath and followed his roommates to the sands. He stood for a moment at the edge of the sands, drinking in this assortment of eggs and their positions, trying to mentally plan out which to approach and in what order. It was another smaller clutch, he noted, but the queen that loomed above seemed just as proud as ever. Jaid moved in, bowing deeply to the gold, coming back up back up slowly before heading towards the eggs. After having done this a few times, he didn't feel nearly as much nervousness as he had the first time. He was still just as excited, though. Even multiple disappointments of failure to Impress couldn't kill off the fluttering feeling he got when eggs sat waiting on the sands.
Jaidev moved in towards the eggs, and though he seemed to be heading to the adder pair, it wasn't the larger eggs that had his attention, but the small ones behind it. He slipped around the adder eggs to place hands first on the coral snake egg. The way it seemed to hide behind bigger and bolder eggs reminded him of himself in a way- maybe that was why he was drawn in. It was odd, though, that the little egg that wanted to hide was seeming to draw a good amount of attention regardless. He gave a small laugh at this, waiting patiently for his own turn before moving in to give the egg a touch. I hope, whomever you chose, you find someone that helps pull you out of hiding...or someone who will hide in the back along with you, he mused as he brushed the shell. Not tarrying too long, Jaidev removed his hands after a few moments, heading to give equal attention to the other eggs.
The Milk snake, due to its close proximity, got the boy's attention next. Unlike the coral snake egg he'd just touched, this one seemed much more bold and readily visible. Despite it's size, it seemed to give off an aura much bigger than its physical size. Jaidev let his hands brush the shell, musing on how strange it was that such similar-looking eggs could give off such different feelings just by the way they were positioned.
Gently, Jai next inched over towards the Carpet snake egg. He was almost nervous to touch this one, not wanting to send the egg toppling over. With his luck, he'd be the one that tripped and sent it sprawling and somehow, he had a feeling the Queen would not be impressed by such a happening. So he made sure to move even more slowly and delicately around this one. Gingerly, the boy put hands to the shell. This one seemed almost indecisive of its position...or maybe it wanted to strike a balance between its upright siblings and its reclined ones. Removing his hands, he moved next to the Bandybandy-patterned egg laying on its side. He chuckled lightly at the egg's 'antics', feeling some of his residual stress fade a little. What a silly little egg! Won't you be the life of this clutch? he thought to himself.
Though... as he moved on, he wagered it felt sort of silly to be giving eggs personalities. After all, they couldn't help how they were placed, right? It was silly to judge an egg by its shell. As it had been seen in other clutches, the shell could be deceptive of the hatchling inside at times. Still, it was hard not to theorize, to imaging what lay beneath the shells...it was fun, even if you were terribly wrong in the end.
His hands found the two large adder eggs in turn, though it was more a matter of duty and respect to the clutch in this case, of continuing to give each egg equal attention than anything. Based on his...preferences and temperance, Jaidev doubted he'd Impress anything in so large an egg. Still, didn't hurt to give the big eggs a respectful touch and heartfelt well-wishes for whomever they did Impress.
The boa-pattern got its due attention as well. Jai let his fingertips trial lightly over the bold, circular markings and darker triangles when he got his turn. It was funny how so many of these eggs had such simple patterns and colors not as shocking as the clutch before, but yet still looked so fascinating. He pressed his palms flat to shell, taking a deep breath. This one was medium-sized- it made him wonder what was inside. Blue? Maybe even a smaller brown? Whatever you are, I wish you the best of luck in finding your bonded, he decided.
The last egg he headed off to was the pit viper egg. Jai was hesitant to touch this one, even moreso than the tilted egg. It wasn't that this one was in a precarious position, and it wasn't even that it was so very close to the Queen (though, it did make his heart thump a little faster as he carefully approached the large dragon). The egg just seemed to give of a very off-putting vibe. Still, every egg deserved its turn, right? And who knew...maybe it was just shy, scared or wanting of its own space...or maybe he was imaging it all, giving eggs personalities once more. He pressed his palms to the shell, smiling slightly (perhaps because he was a touch nervous with this one). I hope that you find someone to your liking, little dragon, he thought. Someone you don't want to try and push away.
As he headed back off the sands, he still couldn't help at least glancing to the large Gold egg. But even if it was one he had zero chance of Impressing, it was still so exciting! Ah, that Hatching of a Queen was always something else, wasn't it? Despite his nervousness (and, truth be told, slight pessimism) regarding the upcoming Hatching, the thought of the Queen egg hatching made Jaidev's stomach bubble with excitement.

Working away from the queen, Firyal went next to a green speckled egg that sat by itself. She lay her hands flat on it for a moment. The medium-sized egg seemed almost to be deliberately disassociating itself from its clutchmates, and reminded her a bit of herself, if she was being honest. She had a distinct tendency to separate herself from the Candidates, to the point where she referred to them as "the Candidates" and didn't group herself under that heading. She also spent as much time performing solitary activities as she could arrange. All in all, she was somewhat amused by the egg, wondering if that's how others saw her. Obviously they didn't see her as an egg, but if that's the analysis they would come up with if forced to examine her personality. On a whim, she sketched a smiling face on the shell before moving on to the next egg.
Next, and more out of a sense of duty than anything else, Firyal went to the pair of large eggs. It was likely the pair would turn out to be bronzes or browns, which meant she stood no chance of Impressing their occupants, but it was expected that the Touching attendees pay some attention to each egg on the sands. So she brushed the pale egg that lay nearly completely on its side and the other one of its size with the zigzag pattern simultaneously as she passed carefully between them. A fine pair of dragons, she was sure, but definitely not the ones for her. Not unless she underwent a major personality overhaul that also changed her gender. Maybe they wouldn't be bronzes. Maybe they'd be large browns, like E'rik's Daramulath.
The next logical egg was the small banded egg with bright alternating stripes that seemed to be hiding behind the pair of large eggs. Maybe a small blue, she speculated, content to let larger dragons take the glory and the majority of the work. In a way, that also reminded her of herself. While she liked to have people pay attention to her sometimes, she was perfectly content to let others shoulder the better part of the work and just occupy a background task that was less taxing and came with less responsibility, and thus fewer opportunities to make mistakes.

Kyllae, despite her seemingly aloof and happy air, had been quite anxious about the eggs. She hardly needed prompting to go to the touching. She was up and dressed before most of the others were out of bed. Dragons! Her second chance! Well...not quite. This was a touching, not a hatching. Still, it gave her butterflies, and tied her insides in knots. T'ka would laugh her head off if she knew the secret to making Kyllae uneasy was as simple as dragon eggs...shells, why was she so worked up? She practically bounced the whole way there. A blond topped tan popsicle quivering with eager energy.
Oh, they were so nice to look at! She swept out over teh sands with a vengeance. Not without a quick bow to the queen first though. It was only proper, after all. And Kyllae respected the authority a queen presented. Even if she secretly thought the great beast was a little bit over-worried. Who in their right mind would harm a dragon egg?
She knew she was supposed to touch the queen egg. But...she would get to that after a minute. so many girls, all eager for a queen...Kyllae was quite confident in her abilities, but she also recognized her faults. Queens simply didn't impress to girls like her. She was too...outgoing, flirty, loud...all the queen riders she'd seen even for a moment were nothing like that. Oh well. Kyllae wasn't the type to dwell on disappointment. That would take away from all the fun she liked to have!
Her eyes were almost instantly drawn to the egg in the front(European Adder Egg). Bold. Forward. Large. Kyllae flitted over to it, running a careful palm over it even as she leaned in to press her cheek against the shell, as if she could hear something from inside. I'll bet a mark or two you house a pretty little bronze, she thought, with a warm smile. She patted it's companion (Death Adder Egg), which while not as noticable, certainly wasn't easy to overlook. It was also large. She couldn't decide if she thought a bronze or a brown was inside. Wouldn't it be interesting if these were a pair of bronzes? Or if this was a bronze, and the more brazen egg a brown? Surely they were too large to house a green or a blue.
She turned, intent on not dwelling too long at any specific egg. There were a lot of candidates, and though she was more deserving, she supposed the should get a turn too...and it wasn't like she hadn't seen these eggs before. She'd been quick to learn of the secret crack in the wall leading to the eggs. Some of the candidates would sneak over to look at the eggs during one of the queen's brief absences...Kyllae was more determined than most. She'd snuck in here not once or twice, but three times. She doubted it made a difference, but...if she could do anything, anything to increase her chances of impressing...she would do it. Besides, she didn't figure it was wrong. Being determined was a good thing, wasn't it?
There were two eggs that looked quite similar, only their colors alternated differently. Kyllae spent just a moment at these (Milk and Coral Snake Eggs). They were very, very pretty, she had to admit. One seemed more outgoing than the other. How funny, the thought of an outgoing egg. The other seemed to be trying to hide. Kyllae mused to herself about all the different personalities the eggs seemed to be giving off. This was just her imagination, she was sure. Eggs didn't have feelings or personalities.
There was a small, almost resentful seeming egg placed nearer the queen. Almost stand-offish. Kyllae actually chuckled a little outloud. She could only imagine that Haanyath had come from an egg like that.
Finally, with a little eye-roll on her part, Kyllae supposed she would go give a quick tap to the queen egg. Not one to drag her feet though, Kyllae pranced over, waiting for a few girls to finish so she could take her turn. Why so far away? she wondered? Had the mother purposely scooted it closer? It was very near her compared to all the others. Was the mother concerned with keeping a better eye on it? She didn't stay long. She ran an index finger over the egg, caressing it with a light touch. A shy egg maybe? That was a good one. A shy queen. Poor thing. What would it do once it learned that everyone expected so much of it?
Kyllae left it almost as soon as she came near, giving another bow to the queen. Lingering near the gold egg might lead her to hope. And as much as she might long for authority, she wouldn't get her hopes up. She'd done that the last hatching, and it hadn't been pretty. Nope. She would try to remain apathetic towards impressing.
She skittered off to go rub a few other eggs, determined not to waste time.

Berjint rose, tugging on a shirt and a pair of boots, rubbing his tousled hair sleepily. He'd been up rather late last night, gazing at the stars and thinking of home. He knew it was a foolish thing to do, as generally he wasn't noticably sentimental, but now he was regretting it for an entirely different reason. His head was muzzy from getting less sleep than usual. Leave it to dragons to choose the most inopportune times!
With this in mind, however, he mulled as he jostled with the other boys, heading for the sands. Now that he knew the Hatching was drawing near, he should be braced and ready at all times. No more dallying about. No more walks along the beach. No more staying up late. It was time to man up and be responsible!
He had long since rubbed the last of the sleep from his eyes before he set foot on the sands. He veered with the boys towards the clustered clutch of eggs, pleased to leave the girls to march in line closer to the queen and her beloved golden egg. Firmly he set his mind on the eggs before him.
Several of the eggs this time laid on their sides, or cocked at odd angles. Raising his bushy brows, he reflected that this looked to be an interesting group of dragons. He slid his a hand over each of the adder eggs, taking a moment to appreciate the intense heat they radiated. He supposed that being bigger, they'd likely need to be hotter.
Dutifully he stroked the bandybandy egg and the milk egg, peeking to reach and brush the surface of the shy coral egg. They might be small eggs, but needed attention too, particularly as this was somehow supposed to prevent injuries. Even small greens could slice you up, after all!
His thoughts on greens, the next to catch his attention was in fact... green! He rather liked how boldly this one sat, as if not afraid to be itself. He stroked it twice, then gave it a pat and moved on. Lastly he paid close attention to the Boa and Python eggs. He paused at each one, leaning close as if to inhale some essence to enlighten him as to what was inside. He let both hands rest on each of them in turn, absorbing their warmth into his palms as he ruminated momentarily. Each one got a light pat in farewell.
Only time would tell now.
