~*.PROFILE.*~
Name: Merya Age: 18 Sex: Female Sexual Orientation: It's really hard to tell - she has courted men in the past and is very affectionate with female friends, but either or both could be put down to manipulation. Craft: N/A Rank: Junior Weyrling
Physical Description: Merya looks younger than she is in a way that nobody ever wants to. Her small stature, light build and almost non-existent figure allow her to pass for a girl of somewhere between twelve and fourteen, and having a comparatively high speaking voice and a distinctly girlish giggle doesn't help her case either. (You could imagine her getting soundly scolded if she were ever caught drinking anything stronger than a glass of milk.) Her eyes are hazel brown, her skin is naturally pale - she tends to freckle rather than tanning evenly - and her hair is approximately the same colour as a very milky cup of tea.
Before she came to Ista, and as a Candidate (when not compelled to wear her robes), she wore mostly reds, greens, blues and purples depending on her mood. She has begun to strongly favour green since Impressing Anidanth. The good quality cloth and bold colours of both her formal and casual clothes mark her out as having at least some money to spend on luxury, but her wardrobe also includes simpler garments in practical browns, greys and blacks that do not show stains. These are mostly reserved for messier tasks.
She is almost always smiling. Whether or not this is a good thing is a matter of opinion.
Personality: Shakespeare's "look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under't" might as well have been written for Merya. She is outwardly sweet, kind, open and engaging, and always seems willing to listen to a tale or laugh at a joke, but beneath this façade she is calculating, ambitious, manipulative and deeply vengeful. Woe betide those who stand between her and what she wants. Having said this, though, it is quite possible to persuade her to be as gentle and good as she appears: you just have to convince her that it's in her interests to do so. As a totally selfish beast, she is easy to win over so long as your way of doing things is the best option available to her. She does have a long memory, though, so trying to get too much out of her may result in retribution once she decides you're no longer useful to her. If she takes a genuine shine to you, she'll protect you and look out for your interests along with her own: not out of a sense of decency, but because she enjoys your company and wants you to like her. People she dislikes, on the other hand, she will gladly set up for all kinds of trouble. People she's indifferent to...well, if they look useful she might spare them. If they're just in her way then she doesn't much care about collateral damage - unless, of course, it would spoil her sweet-little-girl image. That image is vital to her. She uses her appearance to her full advantage, and takes great delight in slipping under the radar. After all, who would suspect a lovely little thing like her? This is a good part of what makes her so dangerous: by the time you realise it's her at the bottom of everything, it's already very much too late...
Talents: Deceit. Why tell the truth if she would be better served by a well-spun lie? Merya has become very, very good at both making a lie seem plausible and not getting caught out. She takes calculated risks, not stupid ones. Her mind also lends itself well to inventive cruelty, and - on a somewhat related note - to tactics. She's hard to second-guess, partly because she's good at second-guessing, and believes in keeping things as simple as possible to reduce the chance of catastrophe. Though most of her schemes never see the light of day, the ones that do get put into practice very seldom fail.
Merya was approved by Nata over here. ^w^

~*.HISTORY.*~
Born the fourth child and third daughter of a minor but fairly wealthy Holder, Merya learned very early in life that it was important to be a Good Girl. Good Girls got new toys, pretty dresses and sweet things to eat. As she grew older, though, the task of being Good became more difficult as the rewards lessened. Only her few object lessons in what Bad Girls got served to keep her on the straight and narrow, and she became increasingly unhappy with her lot. This was made worse by the discovery that her siblings stood to get a lot more out of life than she did, for the most part just because they had been born first: they stood to inherit the bulk of their parents' wealth, leaving Merya with no more than enough to get by. That, she decided, was not enough for her.
So she started to cheat.
It started in her eleventh Turn or thereabouts, and it started with thievery. If she wasn't going to be given what she wanted, she reasoned, then she'd just have to take it for herself. At first she only took little things: a morsel of food here, a piece of ribbon there, anything and everything that was unlikely to be missed. There was a certain satisfaction in getting what she wanted through her own wit and cunning, and as she gained experience her escapades grew more daring. A bracelet here, a half-mark there. A knife here, a purse there. The more precious the object of her desire, the more careful she would be about taking it. All would be lost if ever she were caught. With this in mind she made a point of "finding" some of her spoils and returning them to their owners, thus placing herself - or so she hoped - above suspicion. In addition to thus throwing any possible pursuers off the scent, she also got very good at spinning a quick lie to get herself out of trouble. No, she hadn't seen your comb since yesterday afternoon; had you left it behind somewhere? She'd only seen nine cakes on the table; now that you mention it she'd been wondering where the tenth one was. Oh, was this your bracelet? She'd just found it lying in the dirt two days ago; here, have it back, she'd cleaned it and everything. To her continuing relief - and amusement - nobody ever caught on.
By the time she Turned sixteen, she considered herself both a fairly accomplished thief and an excellent liar. What she was not, however, was much better off. It was all very well lifting things here and there, but then she had to find places to hide them, be careful about how and when she spent the stolen money or wore the pilfered necklace, and that was tiresome at best. What good were her spoils if she couldn't enjoy them? She needed a better plan, a way to trick the world into giving her what she wanted without having to filch it herself.
An opportunity eventually presented itself in the middle of her seventeenth Turn, after a Turn and a half of growing discontent. Saren, a kindly Tailorcraft journeyman in his early forties, stopped in her home Hold on his travels, and - upon realising that he was both unaccompanied and fairly wealthy - Merya made a point of taking a noticeable shine to him. Much to her delight, he soon became fond of her. She nurtured his fondness as much as she could, appearing to take an interest in his work and share his passion for travel. As time went on, she found herself becoming more genuine on both counts: the clothes were beautiful, and the idea of getting away from the Hold was becoming more and more appealing. After all, in a place where nobody knew her she could quite easily make the most of her spoils.
Not long before Merya was due to Turn eighteen, Saren announced his intention to leave the Hold. He was planning to head to Ista Weyr to sell his wares there, wishing to enjoy the balmy climate and reasoning that he would get the best price for his work at the traditionally wealthy Weyrs. Merya saw her chance and pounced on it. She approached him not long before his departure and expressed the desire to go with him. At first he was hesitant, but he couldn't stand up to much of her pleading and soon began to crack. When she finally declared that if he didn't take her with him she'd just run away from home and follow him anyway, he relented. The fact that Merya hadn't been above that sort of emotional blackmail didn't seem to bother him - perhaps he put it down to the near hysterics she'd feigned at the thought of him leaving. Merya didn't much care.
After some persuasion her parents gave in, and - once Merya had squirreled the best of her spoils away in her sparse luggage - the pair set off for Ista. Merya allowed Saren to grow closer to her during the journey, but always kept a little something back out of his reach - something more to try for. She wanted him to keep being a little uncertain of her. This, she knew, was the source of his spoiling her. If he no longer felt that he had to win her over, he would stop trying quite so hard to please her. Just before they arrived at Ista, though, he surprised her with a new set of clothes - beautifully tailored and embroidered - and she gave in a little further than she'd been intending to, allowing him to kiss her the night before they reached the Weyr. If anything, though, this seemed to make him more keen to keep her sweet: no sooner had they arrived at Ista, Merya dressed up in her fine new clothes, than he subtly expressed the intention to seek out a firelizard egg for her during their stay. That earned him another kiss or ten. By then, Merya knew how to let him think he was winning.
The pair spent the first few days at Ista fairly peacefully, Saren negotiating with customers for tailoring work while Merya willingly helped him to sell the wares he had brought with him. Surprisingly she kept her nose clean, picking no pockets and telling no egregious whoppers. This was partly due to her increasing desire to stay at Ista: it would pay to have a good reputation, she knew, and in the long term this was worth more to her than any trinkets she might have stolen. One day not long into their stay, though, she did "borrow" Saren's purse before going in search of lunch - and, upon discovering a merchant with a firelizard egg, promptly put the money inside it to good use. Little green Beru hatched the very next afternoon, and attended a Hatching with her new mistress [1]. It was at this Hatching that everything began to change.
Immediately following the Hatching, buoyed up on the elation that the dragonets had inspired in her, Merya was brought sharply down to earth by a bronzerider called S'kagi [2]. Unbeknownst to her - the Weyr was rather crowded, so it wasn't terribly surprising that one or two people missed out on information - flits were not allowed on the Hatching sands. This accidental transgression earned her a sevenday of latrine duty along with several Candidates guilty of the same. Merya, ever resourceful, saw the opportunity to turn the situation to her advantage. As unpleasant as it was, the punishment detail did give her the opportunity to network with some of the residents of the Weyr: here was a chance to gain herself a proper foothold among people roughly her own age. She acquiesced without protest, but was surprised when S'kagi mistook the situation and assumed she herself was a Candidate.
Perhaps she should not have been surprised. That very evening, while avoiding Saren at the post-Hatching feast, Merya ran into the greenrider she'd been sitting next to in the stands. L'thor, a cheerful fellow with a cynical streak, was quick to inform Merya that his dragon Raith had seen something special in her: if she so desired, she could be a Candidate [3]. By now quite ready to be rid of Saren, who was growing pushier and more patronising by the day, Merya seized the opportunity with both hands. Here was her excuse not to leave Ista with him - and, if she Impressed, her chance to escape him forever. The dragons were an end in and of themselves, too: she was very aware, even after such a short time at Ista, of the power and influence that even the lowliest greenrider could hold. She coveted that power, and could not have passed up the chance to pursue it.
The very next day, Merya began both her sevenday's punishment detail and her Candidacy. She was surprised at the number of others who were joining her until some quiet grumblings and fingerpointings explained the situation: due to the theft of some wine by a few Candidates on the night of the feast, every Candidate in the Weyr had the same sevenday's latrine duty as her. To Merya, this seemed like a marvellous stroke of luck. She could blend in amongst the others and have her mistake on the Sands go almost completely unnoticed. This was, of course, exactly what she did. She also took away the lesson that the Candidatemaster was not to be trifled with, and took great care never to let him focus on her for too long - if he couldn't remember who she was, she was less likely to be singled out for mistreatment.
As with most of her similar ruses, it worked. She made it to the Touching without further incident, bidding a seemingly fond farewell to the departing Saren about four days into her Candidacy [4], and though she would have liked to do more networking the severity of the lice outbreak forced her to keep mostly to herself. At the Touching, she singled out five eggs for her attention: one mottled black and yellow, in a precarious position; one black and white, seeming to pander to a crowd of others; one striped and almost the twin of another, but (unlike its twin) seeming willing to stand out; one in shades of green, far away from the others; the last the Queen, under her mother's watchful eye [5]. For reasons unclear even to her, she took a half-handful of sand from beside the Queen egg, kept it in a little leather pouch and carried it with her for several days afterwards. Perhaps the incident had more of an effect on her than she would like to admit.
When the Hatching came, it came amidst chaos [6]. Several people - Candidates and spectators alike - were suddenly felled by a mysterious illness, and the resulting commotion startled a green (hatched from the green egg Merya had touched) into maiming several Candidates. Merya escaped unscathed, but Talis, the merchant girl who had sold her Beru's egg, did not. Merya's resulting ire towards the dragonet, and momentary mistrust of other greens, almost caused her to disbelieve it when another green chose her. Once again, though, the circumstances were strange. Her green, Anidanth, was one of the last to hatch, and upon colliding with the newly-hatched Queen she caused a lot of people to worry - until the Queen bowed to her in a startling display of deference, allowing her to choose her rider first. The unsteady green chose Merya, having felt her presence at the Touching: she had hatched from the very first egg Merya had touched, the precarious black and yellow. Merya provided the support she had promised at the Touching, though she challenged her new partner to walk to her rather than rushing to her side, and left the dragonet with no doubt that she will do so for the rest of their life together.
The pouch of sand remains at Merya's belt. She intends to give it to Nandeli, the new Queen's partner, in the hope of kindling a friendship between them: having not Impressed a gold, and thus having no direct route to greater power, she must now work to impress their riders. With luck she will cause only minimal damage along the way.

~*.GREEN ANIDANTH.*~ Jungle Carpet PythonInformationThe carpet python is a medium-sized slender python with a long neck and a large head with pits on the lips that is broader than the neck. These pythons are most noted for their incredible yellow and black markings. The markings can vary greatly and consist of bands, stripes, blotches, freckles, or any combination of these. Colors can vary from a vibrant lemon yellow to deep gold, to a pale yellow wash or even ivory. At maturity, Jungle Carpet Pythons grow to lengths between five and a half and eight and a half feet (three meters average). The bodies of Jungle Carpet Pythons are slender, and their triangular heads are well defined. Their tails are prehensile and strong. Comparatively high stung in relation to other carpet python species, also as compared to other snakes of an arboreal nature. When young, jungle carpet pythons tend to be highly sensitive against potential threats, which lead to quite a few bites at its juvenile stage. With maturation, the snake will bite a lot less once it senses that the owner as a friend. MythThe generic name for snakes is indädû'. They are all regarded as anida'wehï, "supernaturals," having an intimate connection with the rain and thunder gods, and possessing a certain influence over the other animal and plant tribes. It is said that the snakes, the deer, and the ginseng act as allies, so that an injury to one is avenged by all. The feeling toward snakes is one of mingled fear and reverence, and every precaution is taken to avoid killing or offending one, especially the rattlesnake. He who kills a snake. will soon see others; and should he kill a second one, so many will come around him whichever way he may turn that he will become dazed at the sight of their glistening eyes and darting tongues and will go wandering about like a crazy man, unable to find his way out of the woods. To guard against this misfortune there are certain prayers which the initiated say in order that a snake may not cross their path, and on meeting the first one of the season the hunter humbly begs of him, "Let us not see each other this summer." Certain smells, as that of the wild parsnip, and certain songs, as those of the Unika'wï or Townhouse dance, are offensive to the snakes and make them angry. For this reason the Unika'wï is held only late in the fall, after they have retired to their dens for the winter. When one dreams of being bitten by a snake he must be treated the same as for an actual bite, because it is a snake ghost that has bitten him; otherwise the place will swell and ulcerate in the same way, even though it be years afterwards. For fear of offending them, even in speaking, it is never said that a man has been bitten by a snake, but only that he has been "scratched by a brier." Most of the beliefs and customs in this connection have more special reference to the rattlesnake. PersonalityFrom a calm, subdued creature to a snarling mess of claws and wings, Anidanth is an unpredictable dragon from the very start. She is easily excitable and her moods come and go in dizzying bursts. Her bond with her rider is almost shocking with how 'in tune' they are with one another. As a result, she is very, very sensitive to her rider's emotions; if her rider even begins to start feeling uneasy or angry, Anidanth will start to get riled up in turn. When she's younger, she is surprisingly snappy and will lunge at quite a few people for getting too close to her or Hers. She will never actually land a bite, however, and most of these menacing displays are just to scare people off. Did I mention that Anidanth doesn't trust anyone besides her rider? As she begins to mature, or is forced to grow used to certain people and/or dragons, Anidanth will begin to mellow out considerably. She can be a pleasant, very easy-going dragon when she's calm, though it's rare for her to stay this way for too long. A moody creature by nature, everyone in the Weyr will know how Anidanth is feeling on a particular day. It is easy to upset her, and even easier to fool her into thinking someone is threatening her or her rider is being threatened. In that case, she will puff herself up and do whatever it takes to drive the attacker off, even if that means threatening to take a good chunk out of their leg. Despite her moods, Anidanth only wants the best for her and her rider, and can be surprisingly sweet when she's calm and happy. Her rider will have their work cut out for them; they alone will be able to approach her when she's feeling threatened and will have to work quickly to calm her down before she accidentally hurts herself. If they lack the willpower and strength to control her, Anidanth will shove their judgment aside to protect them both--even if there's nothing to protect against. Why Me?Anidanth is going to need someone who can either cope or sympathize with her mood swings, as well as having the willpower to calm her down when she starts to get really aggressive. Someone who doesn't get riled easily is a good choice for this Green. Merya is that calm, strong-willed girl. Anidanth is drawn by her strength, by her ability to keep herself in control, and most of all, her ability to manipulate the situation to her advantage. She will listen to anything that Merya says, and will comply within a fraction of a second. And while it's unclear if dragons are capable of lying, Anidanth, as she grows, will master keeping her rider's secrets hidden. There's something about being so mysterious as Merya is that thrills this green. They will be a pair to watch out for, for sure. Where they go and what will happen to them is a mystery, but it is sure that great things WILL happen to these two.

~*.INVENTORY.*~
Clothes: Various things she brought from home, all good quality but nothing particularly fancy. One very fancy set of clothes made for her by Saren, a green embroidered tunic with long sleeves and matching soft slippers. She wears these often, and not just to show them off - Saren is good at what he does, and they're among the most comfortable clothes she owns. They make her look young, too, which she can definitely use: even those who don't share Saren's particular delight in little girls may be swayed by her outwardly innocent appeal. One or two sets of rougher, tougher clothes in browns, greens, greys and black for work use only - Merya wouldn't be seen in them while off-duty.
Trinkets: A stolen knife, a stolen purse, a stolen comb, a stolen bracelet or three. All the things she could never use at home because people would recognise them. A pretty hair thing Saren gave her, a prettier one she stole at fourteen. Portrait of a girl to whom the ends always justify the means.
Since the Touching, she's taken to carrying a little leather pouch with a half-handful of sand in it. If all goes to plan, this will soon leave her possession.
Pets: Green firelizard Beru, bought with money from Saren's "borrowed" purse. Merya is delighted with her tiny companion, and not searching for another: it's doubtful she'd refuse if another came her way, though, because a firelizard is a status symbol. (Beru hasn't been hard to care for, either, so she wouldn't balk at the prospect of looking after another.)

UPDATE 1Merya has gained a firelizard! Squeep! Little green Beru fits neatly into Merya's arms, and - despite being a little hyperactive and squeaky - she is surprisingly obedient to her mistress' wishes. She enjoys being cuddled and scratched between the horns and generally fussed over, but can't sit still for too long without getting restive. Fairly intelligent for a green, she is likely to remember any clutch that she lays (if not exactly where it is) and would take well to being taught how to pinch things from unsuspecting victims.

UPDATE 6 The Hatching is over, and Merya is a fledgling Greenrider! The event was not without some drama, as Talis and others were mauled by an angry green hatchling and several people have fallen ill, but Merya and Anidanth have come out unscathed. Most surprisingly of all, the young Queen also bowed to Anidanth: what this means has yet to come to light, but Merya is determined to get to the bottom of it.

UPDATE 8 The ILA has arrived! O'asis and others are plotting to cause disturbances within the Weyr in the hope of solving the overcrowding issue - some may be persuaded to leave, and the leaders of the Weyr may be persuaded that Weyrwoman Favan's plan for a new Weyr should be carried out.
OOC
Merya and Anidanth are against the activities of the ILA.
Merya is a sly little b***h who never, if she can help it, lets people know her opinion on something sensitive. On the quiet, though, if she found out about the ILA she'd think they were a bunch of complete deadglows. She doesn't want the already troubled Weyr to be any more difficult to live in, especially not now she's got Anidanth to look after as well as Beru. People are sick. She might get sick. She doesn't need them making things any harder for her than they already are. Besides, she's convinced that after this outbreak of illness Favan will get her way in any case - they're just causing useless disruption, and thereby getting under Merya's feet. This isn't the sort of thing Merya tends to forget.
She won't openly act against them. She probably won't openly profess any knowledge of them either, unless she wouldn't be named as the source. But she will do her level best to expose and undermine them wherever possible, so long as it's not obvious that she's doing so. She will also take great (though private) delight in any punishment meted out to ILA members, and will probably keep the names of any she knows of on her mental blacklist for quite some time to come. Noteworthy: she is not above ratting them out to authority, again provided nobody finds out it was her who did so.
Anidanth doesn't trust anyone at the best of times, and if she perceives a threat to Merya she's liable to go berserk. She'll side with her rider.
