It was lunchtime, and the Weyr smelled like the kind of good food that was usually eaten in a hurry. Saren was still upstairs, tending to his customers with that ingratiating smile of his, but he'd allowed his little helper free rein to go and find some fresh air. Run along, he'd said. Run along and play.

One of these days, she'd play him for the blind old fool that he was.

Merya stepped out into the Weyrbowl and squinted in the sunshine. The caverns were darker than she'd realised, her eyes having adjusted to them before daybreak when she woke to wash and dress. Out here, the glare was uncomfortable. She shielded her eyes with one hand and sought the shade. From what she could see, which was precious little, several other folk had had the same idea. One of them, surely, would know where she could find some lunch around here.

And if she needed some money, Saren's purse - which she'd deftly "borrowed" on her way out - would serve her needs much better than the man himself ever had.

Talis, too, had decided that sunshine was just what she needed, although the intoxicating smells of lunch down in the great hall were quite tempting. She had gone down there briefly to snag a few meatrolls and a few redfruit, but had decided not to stay. She felt awkward around all the Candidates and dragonriders, even though she knew there were plenty of non-candidates who lived at the weyr and ate in the great hall with them every day. She still felt awkward. Especially with the firelizard egg tucked against her body.

Glancing down at the zigzag pattern of the egg, Talis sighed a little, stroking it's slightly roughened shell before blinking up at the weyrbowl again, settling on a rock to rest and much a little on her food. She had managed to sell the rest of Asce's eggs save this one -- a good day for a merchant such as herself. The little bronze resting on her shoulder, his color blending almost perfectly with her hair, however, also seemed pleased, crooning to himself and wrapping his tail around her upper arm. Talis smiled, reaching back to give his head a stroke. She was surprised that Asce had given up his babies so easily, but perhaps he understood that they would go to good homes. Perhaps he even trusted her to sell them to good homes, although that might be giving the little firelizard too much credit.

At this thought, Asce snorted a little, nipping her ear and pouting a little. The merchant couldn't help but chuckle at this, taking one of the meatrolls and reaching back to hand it to the flit, who promptly took it, nibbling contentedly.

She spotted the egg before the girl holding it. Was that...? Merya squinted a little, trying to be as surreptitious in her scrutiny as possible. Yes, yes, she was almost certain that was a firelizard egg. Perhaps Saren's purse was going to be even more useful than she'd thought... Or was it too much to hope that the girl was a trader - more than that, a trader looking to sell? She could just as easily be the proud new owner of that egg, and not willing to part with it for love nor money.

Well, there was only one way to find out. And if she needed an excuse, then the meat roll the girl had just started feeding to the little lizard on her shoulder was it. She had food. She knew where to find food. She might be counted upon to accompany Merya to where food could be obtained. All of these were sensible things to hope for. Firelizard eggs were not.

With this in mind, Merya approached the girl cautiously. She stole only one more glance at the egg (what a striking pattern!) as she came closer, devoting her attention then to the girl herself. Best not to be too obvious about this!

"Excuse me... I wonder if you could help me. I haven't been here long, and I'm looking for some lunch - do you know where I might go to find some?"
