The RiderIf anyone can make me a better person you could All I gotta say is I musta done something good I came along one day and you rearranged my life All I gotta say is I musta done something right Name: H'dra (previously Handra) Age: Eighteen Sex: Male Rank: Assistant Weyrlingmaster Physical Description: H'dra is Hold born and bred, and it shows itself in his appearance. He is of average height and weight with tanned skin from his frequent exposure to the outdoors. His face is round and still very boyish, despite having hit puberty, and he has grown pretty much to his full height since his Impression at age sixteen. The tops of his cheeks and the backs of his arms are speckled with sun freckles from the times he forgot to bring his hat when they were moving the herds. His hair has also felt the touch of the sun, helping to encourage his light brown hair into an almost honey-blonde colour. Without the danger of Thread, he's allowed to grow it a little longer than regulation, however he does try to keep it short enough to please F'sey. His bangs, however, are still as long as ever, and he continues to hide behind them in a subconscious kind of way, but all they really do is hide his hazel eyes from view. All the better, really, since he very rarely makes eye contact anyways. Like most of those in his profession his hands show the beginnings of calluses from his work in the stables. While his parents have never been in dire need of marks, they certainly do not have enough to buy their children more clothes than they absolutely need. Thus, H'dra's one set of nice clothes is kept away for Gathers, and he is most commonly seen in his frequently scuffed, patched work clothing.
Personality: Before he came to the Weyr, H'dra was used to living in a home full of people who were more than happy to fill the silence with their idle chatter. His mother loved to talk, as did his sister, and thus he rarely had to say boo unless being addressed directly. Even as a candidate that didn't change much, most people happy to keep the conversation going once they found out he was a good listener. Unfortunately, that changed quickly when he became a dragonrider, and even more so when he took on the position of Assistant Weyrlingmaster. Now people were looking to him to start the conversations and to keep them going, candidates and Weyrfolk alike suddenly eager to hear him talk about his dragon and his life. Though this has helped with his innate shyness, H'dra often stumbles over words and frequently adds "sir" or "miss" to the ends of sentences, regardless of who he is speaking to. Even those he considers to be his friends might still get those titles just out of plain habit. He has a hard time letting go of such things, having been taught by his parents to mind his manners no matter where he was. Just because there were three boys didn't mean that they could go running around like young runnerbeasts.
Though courteous to the point of overdoing it at times, he does not act that way to be obsequious. H'dra is just genuinely sweet natured. He frequently caves to the needs of others whenever it looks like they need a hand, never one to avoid sacrificing his own time and effort when it involves someone else. In this way he is extremely naïve, and it would be hard to convince him that someone is taking advantage of his good nature and using him for their own benefit. Thus, more often than not, he can be found doing someone else's work or fetching someone else's things because they have asked nicely and he is eager to help others. The easiest way into his heart is to be good to him. He has a strong sense of loyalty to those who have been kind to them despite whatever ulterior motives they have, and always tries to see the good in people. Everyone has their own reasons, is his mantra, and he is not the one to judge them for what they do.
Having worked among animals nearly all his life, he has a certain patience and efficiency when he does his work. Chores are to be done to the best of ones ability but also effectively, as one should never waste any time. There was always work to be done back home and so H'dra is used to being busy and spending his time wisely. He doesn't balk at the notion of hard work, instead working through everything methodically and with great care. He also has a great love for animals and enjoys spending time with creatures he can care for. Caring for Dievath is one of the greatest pleasures in his life, and if he could get over his initial shyness it is probable that he would extend that same gentle care to any future children of his. At this stage of the game, however, H'dra is so very easily flustered that even the slightest implication makes his face burn deep red. This particular trait of his makes him a horrible liar, a horrible cheater, and even worse at trying to weasel his way out of things. It also makes him prone to wringing his hands in mental anguish when faced with a difficult decision, but this is solved easily enough when he's placed under someone who gives orders well. When he's given something to do he does it without question and without hesitation.
Pets: None, currently Other/Talents: Familiar with the handling of herdbeasts, especially ovines; used to hard work, especially barn chores; sheers sheep fairly well

History
Pre-Search Handra was born the fourth child of five to a pair of Herders in Ista Hold. He was out in the fields tending the ovines when he was tall enough to be seen over the tops of their fleecy backs, and naturally was apprenticed to his father when he was old enough. He had two elder brothers and an elder sister, all of which had already blazed the trail by the time he came along. His eldest brother had been originally Searched but had never Impressed, and ended up working in the Weyr Bowl to keep food available for the dragons. His elder brother and elder sister both walked the tables and became Journeyman Herders, though his elder sister chose to work with canines instead of the family tradition of ovines. She was married by the time Handra was old enough to be an apprentice, thus satisfying his parents' dreams of marrying off at least one of their children. Since he already had siblings in high places so to speak, his parents rarely gave his future much thought. He would probably become a Herder like his parents, would marry a nice Hold girl, and perhaps start his own herd when he was ready.
It may have sounded like a boring life to some, but it was certainly not a bad life. For the longest time it was Handra's only dream, having no real desires of his own. His world turned practically upside down when he was Searched, an unexpected wrench in his future plans. Still, he willingly went to Ista Weyr where he is beginning to harbour dreams about becoming a real dragonrider. Though he is not sure what sort of future lies ahead of him, he is at least safe in the knowledge that he can return home to his family and continue his life as a Herder.
Candidacy Despite having his brother there, Handra found the Weyr to be completely foreign to him. He was lucky enough to be able to distract himself from worries and woes with hard work, and packed every moment he could with extra chores. From helping out in the kitchen to sweeping floors, he did everything in his power to be useful. His mother and his family were constantly on his mind, and thus he tried his very best to appear polite and well-behaved. It would simply not do to have his family and herders in general disgraced by his behaviour. His frequent chores brought him into contact with a cook's daughter Lynna, who he helped sweep out fireplaces while avoiding the Gather. Though many may have thought the job to be unpleasant, he rather enjoyed working with his hands, not to mention he didn't have to go to the Gather (which was an added benefit).
He was also fortunate enough to meet with the greenrider terror known as F'sey while he was setting tables one evening. While he was initially mistaken for a drudge, Handra's politeness and general meek temper managed to win him some favour in the eyes of the rider. F'sey provided him with some valuable information, not to mention some moral support (in an odd sort of way) and Handra gained his first real mentor. He was constantly thinking of the greenrider when he was allowed to touch the eggs, and then again during the Hatching when he feared he would not Impress. Handra was saved from having to come back empty handed to his new mentor when blue Dievath broke from his egg and chose him. From that point on, Handra became H'dra, rider of blue Dievath.
After the Hatching Dragons and firesone and Weyrling lessons oh my!

Relationships ~ Dievath: My other half, my beloved blue. I can't even think of a word to describe how wonderful he is. I still can't believe he's mine. I wish he would stop asking me to tell people weird things though. >:
~ F'sey: My role model and mentor. Though he can be very sharp with his words, he is honest and I believe he has a good heart. I hope I can make him proud. He was kind to me when I needed the support, and I will always be grateful to him for that.
~ Lynna: A very nice girl with dreams of being a dragonrider. I hope, for her sake, that she is able to rise about her family's professions and find a place where she belongs, whether it be here at the Weyr or elsewhere.
~ Brynne: Pending
~ Zara: She is very comfortable in her own skin, and she is very nice to talk to. I can't believe she had to rescue me from my own shirt! How humiliating. I am happy that she Impressed. She will make a very good bluerider.
~ S'van: A very nice brownrider... who I tripped and fell on at the Hatching Feast. Shards I hope he didn't mind too much. What if I'd injured him? And right after his dragon Hatched! Thankfully he pushed me off to F'sey before I got into any more trouble.
~ C'ren: A friend of F'sey's and a fellow greenrider. He seems a lot like F'sey when I see them together, but perhaps he is a bit sharper. Even so, he seems to know a great many things, so I cannot fault him.

Dragon So smile, give me all your heart and we'll never be apart. I'll never leave you lonely If you'll just smile, tell me that you care And I'll always be there I'll never leave you hurting if you just smile Name: Dievath (Dee-ey-vath) Color: Blue Font Color: Prettyblue Physical Description: Dievath is a large blue, almost the size of a small brown, but he’s well proportioned and his flight is steady. He could probably make an admirable wingsecond one day, because he listens well and doesn’t question what’s he told. On the same token, he’s easy to fool, and tends to believe everything anyone says.
Personality: Hey, why can’t we all be friends? Dievath is the hippy of the dragon world. He simply does not understand meanness, or the dislike of others. He loves everything and is willing to accept them however they are, with open wings. Being mean to Dievath is sort of like kicking a puppy- you look like a jerk when you do it, and he’ll just bound back, still smiling goofily, asking you why you’re in a bad mood and asking if you want to talk about it. It can be annoying for many, but Dievath simply cannot be stopped.
A very social dragon at heart, Dievath is apt to getting lonely easily, and constantly feels the need to have some sort of physical contact with his rider at all times. He can’t be cheerful if he’s not sure that he’s being appreciated, but he can’t understand why people wouldn’t appreciate him- it’s all too much for one little dragon to handle. It’s so much easier to just think about happy things!
When it comes to females, Dievath is exceedingly awkward. He wants to give them the same happy attitude he gives everyone, and shower his love on them, but he knows that female dragons are somehow different, and as he matures, he’ll just become more and more confused. It’ll lead to some angst in his mind, but he’ll shake it off and go back to his happy place. He’s not the brightest dragon, mentally, but he certainly is in personality!
Other: He loves sitting in his rider's lap, and will find it very sad that he will one day be too big to do so.

The Gemsbok Egg The GemsbokThe Gemsbok is a large antelope of striking appearance with long, spearlike horns. It has a thick, horselike neck with a short mane and a compact, muscular body. A defined pattern of black markings that contrast with the white face and fawn-colored body are prominently displayed in dominance rituals to emphasize the length of horns and strength of the shoulder. The head is marked with black triangular patches and broad black stripes that extend from the base of the horns over the eyes to the cheeks. A ring of black encircles the throat and runs down the neck to the chest. The ears end in a black tip (a black tassel hangs from the ear tip of the fringe-eared oryx). A narrow black stripe runs along the spine, and another one separates the lower flank from the white underparts of the body. The white forelegs have a black ring above the knee and a black patch below. The black tail tassel reaches to the hocks. The oryx's ringed horns are up to 30 inches long, making them formidable weapons. The female's horns are often longer and thinner than the male's. The Lithuanian God DievasHe is the source of all good things, including peace, friendship, flowers and cute little birdies. He also created humans — accidentally — from the little flecks of dirt that fell while washing his face.
His brother VELNIAS is not nearly so clever, and tends to stomp around being evil instead.
DIEVAS is almost identical to the Latvian DIEVS but not quite.Oh God, Why Me?Hard working Handra could use a lighter size, and one that's more social to boot. Dievath will help him with being so shy, hopefully. Handra can in turn calm his new dragon down, and teach him that maybe not everyone needs to be cheered up all the time.
Dievath sticks his tongue out at jOO!

Quote: Gemsbok Egg- A medium sized egg with a striking grey and black pattern. The shapes of the black are very clear and angular, and are occasional interspersed with white. The egg itself is quite visually arresting, and its medium size holds all sorts of promises. What will come out of such an egg? No one knows, but plenty are eager to find out. The sharp patterning lead some to think that despite its medium size, it might even hold a bronze, but no one will be able to tell until the dragon inside breaks shell. The Gemsbok egg sits close to the Grevy’s Zebra egg. Together they make a striking pair.
Quote: The Cheetah and Leopard eggs cracked, spilling forth a blue and a green respectively. They seemed to be making a joke with one another before they turned to the candidates. The green wandered to the girls and the blue to the boys, both Impressing fairly quickly. As this happened, the large, boldly-marked Gemsbok Egg started to crack down the center. It rocked for a few moments, then a nose poked through, followed swiftly by head neck and shoulders. It was a blue, and a large one. He was nearly as large as a brown, and beautifully proportioned. He was as shockingly marked as his egg, and quite a cheerful thing, dragging himself free of the confines of his egg and shaking himself off. A piece of egg remained stuck to the end of his nose despite his efforts, but he chose to ignore it. The blue started off on a semi-graceful trot towards the boys, his tail swinging to and fro at a beat, a draconic smile on his face as his whirling eyes passed over the boys. Hmm... which to pick...
Quote: Oh good, there you are, mine! It is so nice to find you, I am quite hungry! My name is Dievath, the blue dragonet said to Handra, curling around his legs and poking the boy in the chest with his nose, exceedingly pleased to have found the right one.

ReservedQuote: Handra's heart was beating so loud that he could swear that everyone in the Hatching Sands could hear it. He watched as greens, blues, and even one brown made their way through the candidates, some choosing quickly while others took their time to pick the one that they wanted. The number of eggs were dwindling rapidly now, and the former shepherd – perhaps not former anymore – was beginning to believe that there was no one in the clutch for him. It was okay, he told himself in what he thought sounded like a brave voice, if there wasn't one for him. He'd have more chances. He really would. But it didn't stop his heart from leaping into his throat when a blue dragon made his way through the boys. Look at that one! He looked... like he was smiling! The smile made the corners of Handra's mouth twitch, and he couldn't help but grin back. He didn't know that dragons could smile. It was adorable. The blue's expression gave him heart, and as he stood up a little taller a voice in his head nearly made him jump. Oh good, there you are, mine! It is so nice to find you, I am quite hungry! My name is Dievath, said the blue as he curled around Handra's legs and poked him in the chest with his nose. "You're… you're hungry?" Handra whispered, almost unable to believe what he was hearing. Did the dragon just talk to him? Was he dreaming? His question was answered when Dievath bumped him affectionately in the chest. Yes! Hungry! The young man's expression turned from shock to complete and utter happiness and he flung his arms around his dragon's neck. His dragon. Oh this was his dragon and he was so perfect and just… just amazing! "Thank you thank you thank you," he said into Dievath's neck, before he pulled back and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. Looking up into the stands, Handra – now officially H'dra – finally found F'sey and waved merrily at the green rider. He had done it. He was a dragonrider!
