The air was warm and light in the Weyrbowl, a light breeze blowing over the rows of tables that had been set up for the feast, the smells of delicious food and drink filling the air. They had spent the entire day readying for the feast to celebrate the newly-Impressed weyrlings, cooking and cleaning and decorating the bowl, showing off Ista Weyr to the guests -- family and Lord Holders and harpers who had attended the Hatching. Now it was complete, the entire weyrbowl ready to start the celebration. To one side, a blonde rider stood calmly next to his blue, the newest group of weyrlings, as well as the newly-hatched dragonets, clustered in front of him. V'len rubbed his forehead, sighing softly to himself under his breath. Of all the riders, he would have placed himself as one of the least qualified for temporary job of training the weyrlings. While he didn't have a quick temper, nor was he terribly awkward in front of others, V'len also thought he was a terrible choice to 'warmly welcome' the young weyrlings to weyr-life.

On top of that, it had been a very, very long time since he had been to a Hatching feast. From what he understood, traditionally the weyrlings would sit with their families, who would dote on them and puff out their chests at their son or daughter who Impressed, while harpers sang ballads to entertain as everyone enjoyed the celebration. This time, however, things were a little different. The Weyrleader suggested that the newly Impressed riders sit with their fellow riders, to get acquainted, not only with the other weyrlings, but with the older riders as well, to help acclimate them to their new lifestyle. The bluerider wasn't so sure how this was going to work, personally he thought that it might make the weyrlings a little nervous, being around older riders. Farenth, it might even make some of the riders themselves nervous (himself included).

Sucking in a slow, even breath, the blonde turned towards the group of weyrlings, an unreadable expression staring back at the (mostly) eager expressions on the weyrlings' faces.

"First of all, congratulations on your Impressions. My name is V'len, rider of blue Garenth. For at least the beginning of your training I'll be teaching you how to take care of your dragon, the essentials of keeping your dragon healthy and in Thread-fighting condition."

V'len paused, looking over the weyrlings again. Shards, they were so tiny. Had he really been that small and gangly when he'd Impressed? Almost immediately, he heard Garenth's affirmative reply. 'You were so bony. I would have never eaten you if you were a herdbeast.' 'As I remember it, you weren't so big yourself, you big wherry.' Stupid dragon. Taking another breath, the bluerider continued on as if he hadn't taken the moment to let his mind wander, turning towards the weyrbowl behind them.

"Please feel free to sit where you want, but remember to mind your dragon if they need anything. Usually they're quite tired after gorging themselves after hatching, but if they need something, feel free to ask myself or another rider for assistance."

A'kor exchanged the marks from the various bets he'd made among the men of his wing, coming up a whole mark short of where he'd started and pursing his lips. He'd totally had another girl pegged for the Queen and scorch it if it hadn't taken Annelie. Now he'd have to do some sort of stupid errands for a spare mark. Flopping down in a chair far enough from the Harpers that their singing didn't get on his nerves, he watched V'len instructing the weyrlings. As he did, a lascivious smile appeared on his face. It hadn't been so long since the Hatching when the blonde had Impressed, much less the most recent Hatching before this, but A'kor knew V'len tended to avoid these events whenever possible.

For now A'kor tried to enjoy the feast, remembering how very proud he'd been the day that Lucieth had Impressed him, and how enormously happy that entire first Turn was. He was still happy, of course, but the memories were bright and shining; it had been a more innocent time. The redhead was glad that none of the dragonets had betweened, as one had done at his own Hatching. It sort of put a damper on the whole event, really.

Astarteth demanded that be put down at once. Kallista chuckled, still in awe of her new bond with her beloved. This little girl was something else! A creature who truly wanted all eyes on her while the runner, excuse me, former runner enjoyed nothing more than blending in with the crowds and observing those around her. The caverns were much colder than the Sands and Kallista was starting to shiver in her white shift.

Hurry mine! There is much to see! And I am soooo hungry. Her green keeled as she demanded obedience.

Stepping faster, Kallista scooped up her green and settled down at one of the tables. She listened to the rider, V'len, introduce himself as their temporary Lesson Master. A drudge came up and handed her a bucket of chopped meat. Immediately, Astarteth stuck her snout in the bucket and came up with a bloody maul and a mouth full of food.

This is good! You should have some!

"Uh, I prefer my food cooked. And definitely not bleeding." Kallista grimaced. She shuddered and hoped that her stomach would tolerate eating later. But for now...

Looking around, Kallista saw her father and brothers sitting at the table for family members. She had hoped to sit with them and relax with them. The teen was sure that her brothers would go nuts over her little green and boast about her once they got back to the Station. Kallista wanted to go over and hug her father but stayed in her place. Instead, she gave them a wave and a wink.

Of course they would love me. What is not to love? Astarteth poked into her thoughts while she worked on another hunk of flesh. I am perfect in every way.

"That you are love. That you are. Now eat up and make sure to chew and not bite your tongue!" Hopefully, after Astar ate and fell asleep, she would be able to change into some nicer clothes and visit her family before the hard work truly began.

Laflan-no, L'an now, he supposed, had been one of the few candidates to not have his parents come to see the event. He'd relayed the message that the clutch would hatch soon with Nogard's aid, but he'd gotten back only that Nerat had been in a bit of bad weather lately, and they would try to make it but might not. He of course was reasonably disappointed, but understood this was the way things had to be. He'd never planned on impressing his first try, though he'd dared to hope. Now, with Alcherath bobbing happily at his side, staring around at this that and the other thing, he had decided it was a shame, but it really didn't matter. He'd impressed, found his one...what more could he ask for?

He nodded at V'len's introduction. Distantly he wondered if having one teacher for just the first lessons was normal, but it was hard to focus for some reason...He blinked and shook his head. Looking around, it was clear where the mental fog had come from. Alcherath was bust inspecting her own toes, oblivious to the world around her. "Hey now, I think you should pay attention," He whispered to the green, who started a bit and then nodded. Oh, mmkay...

When they were turned loose he led the green away from the dispersing crowd and eyed the tables. Where would be good? Something near the end, maybe, so Alche could sit beside him easily. He tried to see where those he knew had gone, but after a moment abandoned that idea. The point was to meet new folks, right? "C'mon then love, this way I think." He led the green to a table at random, and sat himself down near one end, but not all the way down.

Alcherath managed to wiggle her way half under the bench and twist her head around to rest it on the seat beside his left thigh. What're we doing, L'an? Is there more food?

"Well yes love, but I don't know if you should have more. You ate a lot already." He patted the green's head fondly and looked around. As of yet no one had joined them. Part of him was nervous. Would they judge him for partnering with a green dragon? That was the one reason he might have disliked his family knowing. In a family of all brothers, all of whom made it plainly clear that they liked the female gender, he'd be poked at endlessly. Even if he did like girls. And he did. He just happened to get picked by a green (the best green too.)

Don't worry L'an. I'm a girl after all, and I like you. And you like me. There, see? If I was a blue, then they could say you liked boys, because I'd be one.

"Well that's true, Alche. I never thought of it that way before..."

It was so hard to believe that this had actually happened. Cilyme didn’t even remember leaving the Hatching Grounds or anything. His feet had merely been working automatically. Someone had apparently handed him a handkerchief or something and he had mindlessly cleaned off the egg goop that clung to his robe. Somehow, while doing all this, he found himself at the Hatching Feast, still unable to comprehend what had just happened.

And now here he was, sitting down at a feasting table, with a little Bronze dragonet resting besides him. After being fed that first time, Hanumanth had fallen right asleep, but Cil---C’ym, he recalled now----doubted that would last long.

Indeed it hadn’t. Hanumanth snorted awake at that moment and yawned hugely, his green tongue temporarily lolling out of his mouth. He shut it quickly again before turning blue sleepy eyes on his Min. Mine… for a moment, Hanumanth wanted to ask about food, but something more important took precedent over that. Mine. You’re unhappy, Mine… what’s wrong? The striped Bronze stood up a little so he could put his head on C’ym’s knees, those faceted eyes swirling with orange and yellow.

It’s nothing, Han… here. Let me get you some more food… C’ym pulled back one of his sleeves so he could safely handle the long bloody strips of herdbeast. Each strip had to be small, he remembered. Nothing bigger than the dragonet’s own tongue. The strip of meat was dangled for the Bronze hatchling who ignored it. I’m not unhappy. Just… stunned. I can’t believe that I got so lucky… No one else at this table is as lucky as I am right now.

Hanumanth purred at the words; he had come out of his egg making little mewling noises and it hadn’t stopped there. Now the striped hatchling accepted the strip of meat, pulling at it until he felt it was in small bites.

C’ren did not, at first, intend to go to the Hatching at all. It was simply bothersome. Not to mention crowded. But, then again, Ceylith had a good argument. A very compelling one, actually.

Go there, or else I’ll sit on you, were her exact words. A hollow threat, naturally, but C’ren figured he ought to go anyway. These were the dragonriders of tomorrow, the people he would soon have to work with. Ugh. Hopefully by the time that came around, he’d be dead.

That thought brought a squawk of annoyance from Ceylith. Don’t you dare die on me! I forbid you from dying, Mine! Why, if you die, I’ll… I’ll kill you myself! Again! The Green and her rider relaxed near the edges of the commotion, pleased to be out of the way of things. Although Ceylith was more social than her rider, it was difficult not to be. There were probably things lurking in the bottom of the sea that were more social than her C’ren! Sometimes it distressed the Green. At other times, however, she was quite happy to have him all to herself. Her Mine.

For a moment, the Green tried to remember what it had been like, when she had first found her Mine. Her memories, dim as a rule, were even dimmer when it came to that glorious day. Mostly she just remembered an intense need to find someone, someone she absolutely needed and wanted. Most of all, she remembered that this someone had needed her too. Lowering her head, she nudged C’ren briefly.

You should go talk to ours, C’renmine. To Kali and Anne. We found them. We should congratulate them.

First you threaten me and now you want me to do you a favor? C’ren mentally gawked at the very audacity of it, although he had been considering the same exact thing. But, naturally, he thought better of it. For one thing, he saw Kallista’s family not too far away. No need to remind them that he had been the one to take their little girl away.

Or remind them of how rude you were? Came Ceylith’s uncharacteristically snarky reply.

Gh'lan arrived to the Hatching Feast bereft of human company. Florian had taken the first ride back to the Healer Hall to immediately begin his training, taking all hopes of company with him. Now with Gh'lan's arms currently busy continually searching for morsels tasty enough to satisfy Khunoth... he hadn't much strength to do more then listen to the Weyrlingmaster and remind Tada to leave Khunoth's food alone. It was a bit of a blow to him, this not being able to socialize right away, but one look down at Khunoth (even if the brown's eyes still flashed a bit with red) softened his features and his desire to seek out human company.

Having been released from V'len's tentative control, Gh'lan took immediate control of his own situation. He secured a spot at one of the tables near an end, one that had plenty of room for Khunoth to rest next to him. Tada chirped happily enough, and Khunoth did not appear to be within moments of eating the poor little green, so Gh'lan told them both to mind the seating. Tada complied readily enough, Khunoth grumbled, but Gh'lan felt confident that the Brown would all too eagerly chase off any interlopers.

With that taken care of, he meandered over to the serving tables. Hunger was reasserting itself, so Gh'lan pushed aside all other ideas in favor of jockeying through the line to get the food he wanted.

You'll bring back some more wherry pieces right?
Khunoth asked sleepily, and looking back Gh'lan could see that the brown had sat up to peer at him from over a table top. You've had quite a bit today my friend. The former starsmith replied, turning away from those flashing eyes.

Not for me, the little sister is hungry.THAT took a moment to register, and when it did, Gh'lan chuckled his assent and turned his attention back to the task at hand.

Like some, and unlike some, Anne's family -- AKA her mother -- had been unable to come... which was understandable since Anne hadn't even told her only parental figure that she was going to stand, let along had even an inkling she was going to Impress. ....least of an a GOLD. ...Yeah, she was never going to get used to that fact. Ever.

Annelieee...? Came the questioning tone of the Gold at the young woman's side. Her faceted eyes shimmered a brief yellow and she pushed her muzzle up the leg of Hers, forgetting the fact that she was covered in some amount of blood from her recent meal. Whut are you thinkinggg?

Mm...hmm? Anne blinked out of her stupor and looked down at the little Queen and away from the crowd a little ways before them. They had associated themselves with the fringes of the gathering of people for the time being, neither the one for much chatter with strangers.

Nothing, Yansanth... nothing, really. ...We should probably clean you...

The little Queen gave a giggle as her Mine gave a small smile and she removed her head from Anne's leg, leaving a small stain of blood. Anne didn't care nor really take notice, and they both looked out at the tables and people and such.

Mine?

Hmmm?

... I'm tired...

Anne looked down at Yansanth again and nodded. It was time to brave the crowd... and anything else that was associated with it. Oh boy...
Let's go sit down... you can sleep there and I won't move.

The little Queen nodded her now dozy head and followed her Mine to a feasting table that sat away from the smack-dab middle of the foray. Once seated, Yansanth rested her head on her Person's lap as Anne tried to wipe away the blood with the bottom hem of her dress as discretely as possible. She made no real note to look around, and thus failed to noticed C'ren, whom she didn't remember ALL that well anyways, and Cil, who had gone off to feed his little mewling bronze.

Lytah had woken up angry. The little Green flitt snorted awake down in the Candidates’ barracks utterly alone. Just by itself, that was enough to enrage the little firelizard, who hated being left behind. She vaguely recalled Cil saying something important to her, about how she really had to stay behind this time because he had something blah, blah, blah, Lytah, blah, blah, Lytah, food, blah. Even as she tried to dig the memories up, they flooded away from her. Shaking herself off, she spread her wings and went off in search of hers. It wasn’t exactly difficult.

She only paid vague attention to the newly hatched dragonets wandering around. Whatever. So long as they didn’t bother her and hers, it was all fine with her. She let out a delighted cheep at the sight of Cil sitting at a table. Her blues eyes swirled quickly with red as she noticed an intruder. A challenger approaches!

Landing on the table lightly before C’ym and Hanumanth, Lytah flared her wings and promptly challenged the new hatchling to a duel for C’ym’s affections. Hissing dramatically, the firelizard attempted to flame. But, like all of her other attempts, this one failed dramatically.

C’ym blinked at the Green firelizard, only then realizing he had completely forgotten about her. Oh Shards… now she would be impossible to deal with! She hated being ignored. And now she was… was… actually, he wasn’t sure what she was doing. “Lytah…” he said softly, reaching out a hand to her. He promptly pulled his hand back as it was very nearly nipped, as if the firelizard was saying, ‘I’m not done with you yet either!’.

And then she promptly went back to attempting to fight Hanumanth.

The Bronze hatchling was even more confused than C’ym. His eyes rapidly swirled with concern for the little firelizard, thinking she might be ill. Mine! Is she choking Mine? What should I do? What can we do? She needs help, right? He edged his nose a little closer to Lytah, but only got a swipe for his concern.

Oww! he let out a whine, both mentally and audibly. C’yyyyym! She’s hurt! the striped dragonet wailed, thinking he had honestly injured the firelizard. He must have, to make her react so badly. Letting out his usual mewling noise, the Bronze tried once more. Here… let me help you… I can get you food! Do you want food? I promise, I won’t eat it all!

Now that promise got Lytah to shut up a little. Out of most of it, she had only really recognized the word ‘food’, but that was enough. The red stopped overpowering her eyes, replaced by a more distrustful orange. She looked up at C’ym, once again giving him a very definite, ‘I’m still mad at you’ look before sitting on his shoulder with a huff. Well, fine.

C’ym sighed. And then Annelie walked in, with little Yansanth at her side. All conversation momentarily stopped but it started up quickly again. A Gold---and her bonded--- was never ignored, no matter her age. Or previous station. Come on, Han. Let’s go meet your little golden sister! C’ym suggested, getting up only to sit down nearby Anne. He grinned awkwardly at her, hardly able to believe what they had both achieved that day. It seemed like forever and a half since they had met at that Gather.

Of all the dragonets here...Tseka was sure Haanyath was the absolutely most volatile, vicious, and viperous. Hatching was over. Feasting was now. Haanyath had stuffed herself full, yet her eyes still contained an alarming amount of red. While it seemed the general weyrling population was in a pleasant stupor, their evenings hazes of good thoughts of now, and pleasant dreams of what was to come. Very early on, it became clear that this was not the kind of relationship she and Haanyath would be having. Why, the little green was a near identical clone of herself, when she was stuck as an apprentice smith, smothered and oppressed by unfair sexism. How hilarious! Tseka, or she supposed she would be T'ka now, had always thought dragons docile. All of them she'd seen or communicated with had been mild, sweet, gentle. Haanyath was anything but sweet, and least of all gentle. And fiercely independent. There were quite a few dragonets with heads in their humans laps, being scratched, cuddled, or otherwise rubbed. Haanyath had made it clear that she did not want to be babied.

What a fireball the little green was! At least she was slightly more placid now that her stomach was fit to burst. Haanyath kept casting glances at Xythe and Daeok, the little green and bronze flits whom she would have to share her human with. She'd hissed at their arrival, threatening to snap at Xythe, but the little green flit had called the bluff, perching with much haste on top of her head. Well, that was that. Haanyath knew she couldn't hurt them. For while she didn't care for them much, she wouldn't want to harm them, lest she distress her human. At least the little bronze Daeok seemed wary enough of her to mind his distance.

<> Haanyath complained. Sitting on the floor next to her human's chair was not in the least bit entertaining. She wanted to go nap. But if her human could stay up, so would she! She wouldn't be outdone, that was for sure. But how degrading, to be forced to sit here on the floor, while all of her siblings made fools of themselves, whining and loving and melting in their humans arms. At least T'ka didn't try any of that. But that was why T'ka was hers. Her Mine. They had a mutual understanding, a bond. They didn't need to be all over each other to listen, to work together. They didn't need this silly little game of 'I-love-you-and-you-love-me'.

Feeling put off that she was having to share the floor with other dragonets, whom she considered undignified, especially the snuggly-lovey ones, and the fact that FLITTS were on the table, eating human food, and not her...well...that didn't fly with Haanyath. Without warning, she stood up, rearing up and placing her forepaws on the table, standing up awkwardly, feet splayed wide on the floor to maintain her balance, she snatched a piece of Wherry from a bowl, gulping it down.

<> Oops...too lated. Haanyath gagged silently, the meat stuck. A swift, and hard, rap on the back from T'ka dislodged it, and Haanyath chewed it a little, to her distaste, and swallowed. Thankfully, she felt that miniature ordeal had been less than notticable...did anyone else see? If anyone made fun of her...she would beat them up! Her build was certainly intimidating. Despite her lowness to the ground...her muscle and bulk was quite something. She didn't see herself as ugly! She was amazing, she was perfect, she was strong! There was nothing wrong with that. She was a powerful predator, and she would prove herself!

T'ka just laughed, seeing the dragonet's determination burn a bright orangey color in her eyes. Oh, what fun little Haanyath was.
<>

<> T'ka laughed again, patting her dragon's head twice for good measure. At the same time, she was thankful they were eating near the edge...goodness knows what all the older riders would think, with her little dragon propped up at the table, demanding equal treatment.

<any queen, you know!>>

<> Haanyath was a lot more tired than she let on though, and T'ka suspected that the little dragonet wasn't even hungry, considering how much she'd eaten earlier. This was just an act of rebellion. For indeed, she wasn't eating table food anymore. Wow...a dragon! T'ka had expected a lot of things, thought a lot of things. But never in her wildest dreams did she ever concieve of something like her beloved, her fiery Haanyath. She was is love.

S'kagi grinned as he wandered the field, pleased with the results of the Hatching. He had to admit he'd been fairly worried for a while, and was still concerned for the Candidate who would, if nothing else, probably have a permanent reminder of standing on the stands from her encounter with the highly aggressive green.
He'd been more worried for the young queen though, her uncertainty when she first hatched. He'd been momentarily concerned that maybe she might go 'between', rather than find her partner on the sands, and then he'd been...and he admitted it could be taken badly had he admitted it out loud, concerned when her attention had focused on one of the young women on the sand.
His relief had been almost a tangible force, and Coriath had been greatly amused at it.
You were far too worried. Coriath insisted, knowingly.
You would have been too, in my shoes. He argued back. But Emori Impressed. I was glad to see that.
He hoped to be able to get the young woman into his wing in the future, the newly bonded Green rider had first caught his eye at the Gather, and he had a feeling she would be an skilled rider. He also wanted to talk to her, and see how she felt now that she had impressed. How had her strong feelings against the riders been affected when she'd bonded with the bright little Green?
I had my doubts about her, because she was so angry, but I think perhaps...for once...you were right. Coriath teased. Talk to people. Make friends. Show them the you I see.
-----

Rayale couldn't help but be in somewhat better spirits after the Hatching. He hadn't impressed, and he'd actually been outright alarmed when one young girl had been bloodied by an angry looking Green hatchling (who he was carefully keeping his distance from right now, just in case.) But the spirits at the feast were so exuberant he couldn't help but feel a bit better about it. And the young girl who'd impressed the queen... Well... all of them really. Their reactions had been so powerful that he thought it could have easily reduced a hard hearted soul to tears. It made an embarrassing lump in his throat anyway.
He wondered if he would be young enough still when there was another clutch to try again, and hoped maybe next time he'd be able to control his nerves. Maybe that was part of the reason he hadn't Impressed. Anyway he had his hands full with Rikk and the paler blue Skyborn, both of whom wheeled about him in a chase, making it look like he had two blue, chittering moons.

More and more folk were flooding in. Families were hugging and waving at each other, friends who had been separated before when one impressed and the other didn't until now were reuniting...it was quite a sight. L'an as it was found himself perfectly content to munch at some food and simply observe. Of yet no one had joined him, which he found a bit peculiar, but then most of the new weyrlings were still with their families or at the food. And those left standing were few and far between. A shame, he'd thought they would have at least come to eat something. He found himself hoping he'd be able to meet some other riders. Unsurprisingly, he planned to ask if there were many others in his...unique position.

And what position's that, L'an?...Is there more food? Alcherath nuzzled her nose against L'an's knee, stirring from her dozing to comfort him. It was much noisier now, she belatedly noticed, and turned to see who else had come. Who're they, L'an? Should I know?

L'an patted Alche reassuringly and rubbed at her eyeridges. "Nothing love, nothing. Nothing for you to fret about anyways." He glanced back over his shoulder and nodded to the few folk he recognized immediately. "Those? Alche those are your clutchmates. Don't you remember?"

Remember what? Her blue eyes whorled slowly, a content and peaceful look plastered over her maw.

"Remember...who they are?" L'an blinked, something between amused and concerned at the antics of his green.

Who who is? L'an decided at that moment that she couldn't be serious, and he laughed, shaking his head. A bit of meat fell from his lips and she wasted no time in catching it and swallowing it down. He couldn't help but smile at her speed in inhaling the morsel, "Alche...did you even taste that?"

Taste what? ...Maybe she wasn't kidding after all.

Well, at least he'd got to watch his hatching he supposed. Conomor sipped at his goblet of wine as he wandered through the crowds rather aimlessly. He felt like a bit of a fool with one arm of his lovely blue shirt tucked away, and his splinted arm in a sling underneath it. He couldn't really bemoan his luck though, not with Gilden perched on his shoulder. The little queen was making her way through a slice of roast runnerbeast he'd acquired for her, and seemed thrilled by the atmosphere around her.

Much as he presence kept him from being completely gloomy, Conomor didn't yet feel like going to congratulate the new weyrlings. They were probably rather busy in any case; better to leave it a few days, let them settle into their new roles a little and then talk to those of them he knew. At least he was moving out of the dormitory now, back into his mother's comfortable quarters. Next time his luck might be different; his bad fortune couldn't go on forever. He still had time.

As she finished her food, Gilden perked up on Conomor's shoulder before giving a happy cheep and launching herself into the air. Turning to see where she was off to, Conomor spotted a pair of blue flits orbiting a youth he recognized as another Candidate. No hatchling for him, either. Shrugging internally, Conomor followed his little queen, and offered the other dragonless young man a faint smile.

"Good feast, isn't it?" he commented. "Rather wish I was over there though," he said with a sigh and a jerk of his head over at the new weyrlings.

It was Yansanth who first took notice that someone and their own bonded had sat down close to her and her Mine. But she was so tired... Annelieee, the little Gold began as she slit open her faceted eyes a smidge, though didn't appear to actually be looking at anything. There's someone heeeere... who's he?

Anne blinked at the sleepy Yansanth in slight confusion for a moment, then turned her head and startled about an inch out of her seat and the name, "Cil!" jumped out of her. She dropped the hem of her dress she had still been using to clean the Gold's face with in a sheepish manner. As Yansanth opened her eyes in full, finally, and lifted her head off Anne's lap, her eyes swirled yellow and green as she looked at her Mine as she gave a fidget.
