H'dra sat quietly on the fence of the feeding pen, a jar of oil sitting on one knee and his riding straps draped over the other. He was not the type to waste any time, especially since he could use his free time to help F'sey, and with Dievath occupied it was a good time to get the fiddly work done. The blue's attention span was only so big, and though he was curious enough to watch H'dra work, his curiousity never lasted long enough for his rider to finish oiling the whole thing. But now that Dievath was hunting, the young bluerider has a moment's peace with fewer, minor interruptions.
"Mine I got it! It's a big one too! I am very proud. Are you proud of me?"
Yes, Dievath, I am very proud of you, he replied automatically, casting a glance over his shoulder at the visible bulk of his blue. It had taken him longer than most to learn how to hunt, partially because his attention span wasn't very long but mainly because he couldn't figure out how to get his body to do what he wanted. There were some side effects to growing too quickly and too big before you could catch up. He was doing much better now – something H'dra was quite pleased about – however he still liked to be praised whenever he caught something. Knowing Dievath, he would catch seven or eight beasts before he finally decided he'd had enough.
Thus, once he was sure Dievath had heard him, he retuned to his riding straps.

With a barely-audiable grunt of effort, the former miner tipped the wheelbarrow just so the coal piled into it could tumble out without a huge cloud of dust attacking everyone standing within five feet of himself. His task complete, one of the kitchen folk waved him off with a flick of her wrist while another (much younger) threw a damp cloth at him with the comment of "looking blacker than bottom of a mine". Govind only smiled at the chorus of giggles and waved to them as he left for a moment of free time to himself.
As he walked, Govind stared at the now-familiar surroundings of the Weyr while wiping away the coal dust that clung to his face, arms and clothing. How many moons had it been since that Greenrider took him from the cold halls of Crom? A few? Many? .....It didn't matter much anymore. Someone would tell him when his time came. For now, the days ran into one another. They seemed endless when work was hard and when the hatchings grew close....
Hatchings. He chuckled to himself. Here he was to stand and, to only miss out on the most recent due to a sickness that left him barely able to stand without aid. But what was someone like him to do? Not mu-
Hm? Govind paused as he drew close to the feeding grounds; a flash of blue had caught his attention. A dragon? Or a very large Firelizard? Most likely the former. Curious, the teenager stepped closer and leaned against the fence to watch. It was a Blue and a fine beast he was as well. And that must have been his Rider just nearby. With a light smile, Govind was more than content to lean and watch the Dragon as he fed, rather than draw attention to himself.

Dievath consumed his third bovine when the sight of something human like and very black caught his attention and made him look up. The large blue stared at Govind as though trying to figure out why he was so dark, his blue eyes whirling. "Mine look at that person! I think it's a person, at least. He is so black! Why is he black? Doesn't black make the sun feel hotter?" He crooned softly, his lunch forgotten in favour of this strange new human. And the human was looking at him! Even better!
H'dra looked up when Dievath instructed him to do so, trying to find the object of the blue's interest. When his eyes fell on Govind he realized what the blue had meant about a black person. No doubt the young man had probably been cleaning chimneys or something to that effect. He had been coerced into doing that the day of the Gather, and remembered quite distinctly what he'd looked like after that. He's probably covered in coal dust or soot. It makes people turn black like that, but it washes off like dirt.
Now that they were both looking at Govind, the bluerider realized that his chances of avoiding conversation had been cut considerably. Licking his lips nervously, he settled for a small wave in the young man's direction, not sure if he wanted to be disturbed. Dievath, on the other hand, came trotting up to the fence, eager to investigate this soot covered human.

Being covered in dirt and such was not something uncommon for Govind so, dirty as he was, he really wasn't bothered about it. Besides, he had a towel with him. He could afford to be like this for a few more moments before he went down to lake to wash.
The croon from the Blue broke the Candidate from his thoughts and forced to him to realize he was the center of attention for both the dragon and Rider. Standing up straight, the teenager cast a similar wave to the Rider with a nervous smile before grabbing and working at the coal dust with his towel. It took a little effort, but his pale skin started to show through the layer of yuck as the Blue approached the fence.

"Aw he is cute Mine! Not as cute as you, but he makes the same expressions."
The tips of H'dra's ears burned at those words, but he chose not to reply. He was almost eighteen turns now, and that definitely was far too old to be called cute. Perhaps he needed to teach his dragon some new adjectives when it came to describing growing boys. He did not want to be called cute for his whole life, no matter how true it was.
Dievath settled himself near the edge of the feeding pens, bringing his head down to eye level so he could study the human. They were always so fascinating the way they went about their business. Sometimes he liked to sit on his perch and just watch them move around. It was a pity he wasn't allowed back in the Lower Caverns though. He wanted to see the kitchens.
"He is getting cleaner! Look, you can see his skin underneath the black stuff!" The blue's eyes whirled faster as he continued to watch Govind with one large blue eye.
"Careful Dievath! Don't scare him!" The bluerider knew that not everyone was used to seeing a dragon up close and personal, and the last thing he needed was to scare some Lower Caverns worker out of their skin. Dievath really had no idea about personal space.

Govind had just managed to get a considerable amount off but he certainly didn't expect to have a large blue eye staring at him when he looked back up. Needless to say, he backed up a bit in surprise.
Surprised? Very much so, yes. Scared? Not really. Dragons were pretty commonplace in his lifestyle now.
He just never expected the Blue to be such a friendly creature. Composure regained, Govind smiled and looked into the sparkling eye. "Good day, Sir Dragon." He chuckled. "Am I really that interesting covered in soot? Most would order me to the baths."

H'dra nearly wrung his hands in worry when Govind took a step back, already fretting. The candidate managed to pull himself together, however, and the bluerider gave a sigh of relief. For a moment he had thought the boy was going to make a run for it. You can't just go shoving your face in people's faces! He scolded Dievath, his face a mixture of anxiety and about as close to anger as H'dra could manage. You could have scared him to death!
"I would not have scared him to death. He is a smart boy, even if he is covered in soot. You worry too much." His rider was left to frown rather pathetically at him as he turned his attention back to Govind. "Tell him he is very interesting. I would order him into the bath too! Look how much soot he has all over him!" The blue gave an amused rumble.
The bluerider made his way dutifully over to where his dragon was bothering the poor Candidate, and put a hand on the side of Dievath's face. "I'm very sorry sir! He really likes people, apparently even more so when they're covered in soot. He won't hurt you though."
Dievath made a sound akin to a scoff. "Of course I wouldn't!"

Govind cocked a eyebrow at the amused noise that came drifting out of the dragons' throat. Was he really that funny? The Candidate had half a mind to start tap dancing for the Blue just to see if he got the same reaction when the Rider came over to his dragons' side.
Draping the dirty towel around his shoulders, Govind waved off the apology with a small shrug. "It's quite alright, if he had wanted to hurt me i'm sure I would have been wisked away by the healers...or halfway down your friends' throat by now." He chuckled at the bad joke and smiled at H'dra, pausing only to glance up at the Dragon at the scoffing noise he had made (no doubt to what his rider had said). Shrugging again, Govind tried to find something else to say...even after two turns here, he still couldn't strike up a decent conversation.
"Oh! Sir Rider." He was curious about something. "I noticed you working on something over on the fence. What was it, if I am allowed to ask?"

H'dra looked positively terrified at the idea of Govind being whisked off to the healers, probably more so than him being halfway down Dievath's throat. If there was one thing he could trust about the blue it was that he was never, ever going to eat anybody. That didn't mean he wouldn't nudge them or try to play tag with them and end up nearly trampling them when they moved too slowly. The bluerider would never live down the day his blue did something and accidentally hurt someone.
Govind, however, had not been harmed yet, and that was something H'dra was eternally grateful for. Now that he was here his blue should behave, which was reassuring. He was shaken from his private world of near constant woe by Govind's words, flushing at the honorific. "You don't have to call me Sir, sir, just H'dra is okay." It took him a moment to realize he'd been asked a question, and held up the riding straps tentatively. "This? Oh, they're riding straps for Dievath. They just need oiling really, to make sure that the leather is nice. And I have to check if the stitching is okay." He held them out for Govind to see. "You can touch them if you like."
