Terisa gulped as she looked down at the note she had scribbled. One flight up and how many doors to the right? She couldn't quite tell, but she thought it said three, maybe five? She needed to work on her penmanship.... The dark haired girl knew that she would find the correct weyr eventually though, and that was the main goal after all. Well, technically the main goal was for her to assist in bathing and/or oiling the dragon inside, but it was simply a good excuse for getting to see a dragon very much up close. Having been at the weyr for some time now, she had of course seen many dragons, but never in such an intimate setting. She would be touching a dragon's skin for an extended period of time, able to study the musculature underneath of that skin! She didn't really mind the oil that was used to keep the dragon's skin healthy anyway, so it really didn't seem like such a horrible chore at all!

As she reached the top of the flight of stairs she had been climbing, she glanced back down at her note and started off down the passageway, peeking into doorways to try to catch a glimpse of a dragon, but for the most part the dragon's quarters weren't visible from this side of the weyr. As she approached what she hoped was the correct weyr though, the young teenager slowed her footsteps. She was still a bit worried that what she was guessing was a three was actually a five, and so when she poked her head around the door, her voice stuck a bit, "H-hello? Anyone home?" She paused for a moment, but wasn't sure if she heard anything, and so tried to offer an explanation for her intrusion, "I'm supposed to be helping with oiling, but I'm not sure I have the right weyr.... Is anyone here?"

"Mine are you clean yet? Have you scrubbed all your itchy spots?"

Dievath peered around the corner into the rider's portion of the weyr, trying to see as best he could with only one blue eye. His was always a very clean person, but he didn't often get a chance to relax and take a bath. The blue had insisted, however, that today he take his time and make sure he was very, very clean. They'd been told that morning that one of the candidates was coming up to help with oiling. Give them more exposure to dragons since there would be no Touching. He still shuddered at the memory of Cheoth's rage. The blue had not liked that in the slightest.

His rider, on the other hand, was trying not to be nervous as he towel dried his hair. Of course he had had candidates help him bathe and oil Dievath before, but never in his weyr. Idly he wondered if his bed covers were folded neatly enough. The weyr was certainly clean – he had made sure it was practically spotless this morning – but he wasn't sure what the candidate was expecting. Did he need to put everything away? Would he or she be bringing things with them and need a place to put them? It was all very worrying. Trying to take his mind off of things, H'dra finished drying his hair and folded the towel several times. All he had to do was wait until the candidate arr-

"She is here!" The blue changed directions and swung his head over to the doorway. "She is here, Mine! Come quickly!"

H'dra swallowed the nervous lump in his throat and came to greet her. "Uh hi! If you're supposed to be helping with oiling then this is the spot, miss. I'm H'dra, and this is Dievath. Did you uh, need anything before we start?"

When a blue dragon's head suddenly came into her view, Terisa stopped mid-stride. He didn't look too angry, his eyes weren't red at least.... She was relieved when the rider came into view as well and confirmed that she was in the right spot. "Oh good! Yes, I'm here to help with oiling." She gave her best overly cheerful smile, though there was a hint of nerves at the edges if one looked close enough. She was sure that most candidates were probably a bit nervous whenever they help with other riders' dragons. After all, the Candidate Master had said time after time that they wouldn't understand what it was to be a rider until they impressed. Swallowing a bit, she looked around at the surprisingly spotless weyr, "I'm Terisa and uh... well, do you have an oil pot here or should I run and get one.... I'm sorry if I was supposed to bring one, I didn't realize...." The girl's black eyes looked to the rider with a now obvious worried look. Great! She had been here a whole two candle ticks and already she was showing just how useless she was at this job!

She sent another look around the weyr, hoping beyond hope that she would spot an oil pot and brush somewhere, but she quickly realized that she would look terribly snoopy if she continued that, so she glanced back at H'dra with renewed fear. Shards! What had the Candidate Master said? Now she couldn't remember anymore! She could have sworn that she has been informed where oil pots were stored, but she just couldn't think of it. What if she did have to go get one and couldn't find one? What if the gorgeous blue dragon's skin cracked because it took her so long to get him oiled?? What was she going to do?!

The blue seemed incredibly amused about something, but H'dra was too busy focusing on the girl that seemed as anxious as he was. Shards and double shards. Why did they send a girl up to help him? And a shy one at that? It wasn't that he didn't like girls or shy people – the bluerider didn't have it in him to really dislike anything – but it certainly did nothing to make his job easier! He and girls tended to end up in various embarrassing situations when they were together. Like when he had met Zara and got trapped in his own shirt. This meeting was already doomed for disaster.

"Mine you do not need to be worried. She is nice. But she asked you a question. You should answer. I would like to be oiled soon!" Dievath had settled back in his side of the weyr, still watching the pair of them with unveiled amusement. This girl – Terisa? Was that what she said her name was – was so much like His it was very funny. His had told him all kinds of stories about when he had first arrived at the Weyr, and how anxious he had been about dealing with all the dragons. They were certainly not like ovines, and would not taste as good, as Dievath had commented. But he was outgrowing his shyness bit by bit. He had faith in His.

Snapping out of his inner worries, H'dra waved his hands dismissively. "No no I have one, miss Terisa, you didn't have to bring one. I have two actually, one for the both of us." He turned and lifted the two pots up, balancing them neatly before he handed one to Terisa. "So uh… did the Candidatemaster tell you anything about oiling?" The rider set down his pot next to the blue dragon. He hoped, as an afterthought, that the pot had not been too heavy for Terisa. Perhaps he should have offered to carry it for her. Would that have been rude?

Terisa had been standing in front of the bluerider for a few moments, watching his face do the far away look that riders got when they were speaking with their dragons. Normally she would be fairly nervous during this awkward pause, but not today, no today she was so terrified of doing something wrong that she could probably oil the dragon with the sweat on her palms at that moment.... The relief that washed over the poor girl's face when the bluerider finally spoke was almost comedic in nature, and she quickly reached for the pot that H'dra offered. The dark-haired girl then followed him like a lost runnerbeast to Dievath's side, the whole time running over the oiling lessons she could recall in her mind, "Uh, y-yes." Her expression took on the look of someone straining to recall lines in a play as Terisa reiterated her lessons as close to word perfect as she could, "Look for dry or itchy spots of skin, take a rag, dip it in the oil and rub it into the skin gently." She then looked a bit worried, recalling that usually the dragon communicated with their rider where the itchy spots were, "U-uh, h-how do I know if I've gotten them all?" Her dark eyes traveled to the blue dragon in front of her and the sheer amount of blue skin became quite intimidating.

Though both of the beings in the weyr at that moment induced terror in the girl, for some reason the blue seemed slightly less terrifying, perhaps because his eyes were swirling colors of delight, and dragons' eyes didn't lie about their moods, so she could be sure that the blue wasn't angry with her. Glancing at the rider next to her, she couldn't be so sure about him. Gulping a bit, she attempted to smile sheepishly at him, though it came out as more of a grimace, since her nerves weren't letting her muscles function all that properly, but perhaps the message would still come across and he wouldn't be angry with her lack of knowledge of all this dragon related....

He was very relieved that Z'nal was teaching candidates a little about the task they were expected to perform, rather than sending them in cold turkey. Truth be told, H'dra wouldn't have been surprised in the least if the Candidatemaster had sent poor Terisa to his weyr without even telling her what she was doing. The bluerider immediately chastised himself for such a thought. Z'nal had never been unkind to him, and he was not about to start thinking bad things about other people for doing their job. If he thought that all the candidates should get latrine duty because of one theft than he would respect that and not think too poorly of the man.

"You don't have to worry too much about being gentle, miss. When they're younger their hide is softer, but Dievath's a big boy now and I don't think you could hurt him even if you tried." H'dra's face broke out into what he thought was a reassuring smile, though awkwardness still clung to him. He really couldn't help it though. What teenage boy wouldn't be a little shy whenever there was a teenage girl alone in his room? Still, they had a task to do, and he wouldn't waste his time over thinking things. Terisa was just a candidate and she was just here to help. If he could focus on that he could keep both of them a little calmer (he hoped).

At Terisa's question he blinked, and then gave what he hoped was a dismissive shrug of his shoulders. "Don't worry about it too much, miss. He'll let me know about the ones you might not be able to see right away, and I can help you. Just go for the obvious ones, how about that? Like this one." The bluerider ran his finger over a dry patch on Dievath's side. "Just uh… do what you think is good and I'll let you know if you need to change anything. Use as much oil as you like. I don't think you can over do it." He dipped his rag into his own pot and began rubbing it into a nearby spot, hoping that Terisa would just follow his lead. After a moment of silence he made a rather sad attempt at starting a conversation.

"So uh… were you born here? Or did you get Searched?"

Terisa nodded at the information that H'dra provided her with, trying to commit it to memory. For the most part it was simply confirmation of what she had already suspected, but had been too cautious to assume outright, especially if it would risk a dragon's health or comfort. Though the rider was obviously not completely comfortable, the weaver girl took his smile in stride, it was reassuring that he wasn't angry or annoyed with her, and little else mattered at that moment. Moving her dark eyes to the spot that the rider indicated, Terisa continued to nod, probably resembling an idiot wherry watching a bouncing object. Realizing that she looked foolish, the girl controlled her neck movement and dipped a rag into her oil pot, going for a nice big spot on the blue's side that look rather dry to her. She sat back on her knees and just started rubbing the oiled rag in small circles. The movement was a bit awkward to her at first, since her muscles were trained for the back and forth movement of weaving, but the small circles seemed to make more sense for making sure she got the whole area of skin.

The monotony of the work allowed the girl's mind to wander for the most part, and just as she had started thinking about an interesting weaving pattern involving yarn dyed like Dievath's skin, the rider's voice pulled out of her own thoughts and she turned her wide eyes to him. It took a moment for his question to register, since she first had to remember what he had asked. Not wanting to appear slow, Terisa blurted out, "Oh, n-no, I w-was s-s-searched." Realizing that her attempt at speed was just making her stutter more, she paused for a moment before starting again, trying to keep calm, "I was at the Weaverhall when a rider came to pick up an order and ending up getting me as well...." She smiled weakly, laughing a bit nervously at her attempt at humor. "W-what about you?"
PostPosted: Thu Jul 23, 2009 3:52 pm

"Aaaah that's the spot! Her circles are very nice. They are making the itch go away." Dievath's back leg twitched, almost as though he were a dog and Terisa had found the itchy spot on his belly. It had taken him quite a long time to get out of the habit of actually kicking out, though H'dra was glad that he had grown out of it. Nothing said dangerous quite like a full grown, rather large blue taking people out with his foot just because they were scratching his itchy spots. That would send all the candidates away.

H'dra gave a small nod as he finished his spot and pulled himself up higher to reach another. Rubbing a dragon down with oil was something you had to become efficient at quickly, since the dragons seemed to be hatchlings one minute and adults the next. The sheer amount of hide to oil could be daunting at times, but efficiency was the key to everything. With Terisa's help, no doubt H'dra would be finished earlier than usual. It was a nice thought, not to mention it would get rid of his own imaginary itchy spots faster.

The bluerider listened to her words as he worked, trying not to make too much eye contact as it was no doubt as embarrassing to him as it was for her. "Weaverhall? I've never been to one of those before. Are they nice inside? My family was all Herders, so I didn't have to leave my Hold until I was Searched. Then I came here, Impressed Dievath, and I haven't had a chance to go home since. I send messages with the runners, though. I can't say I'm a very exciting dragonrider, miss. I don't have any adventure stories to tell." He grinned sheepishly.

Terisa was a bit surprised as the dragon's muscles twitched, but she continued with her oiling as instructed. Once she had finished the first spot that she had started with, her eyes search the nearby hide and easily found another flaky spot. Dipping her rag into the oil pot once more, she rested one arm while continuing her rubbing with the other. Thankfully, her arms were strong from weaving and she could keep them raised for long periods of time from all her experience with the loom. It actually made her arms quite perfect for oiling, and she was thankful that she had worn a sleeveless tunic, since it let her arms sweat freely without constraint of sticky cloth. Taking a moment to bush back a few strands black hair, the girl surveyed how many more itchy spots there were to go. Even with both working, it looked like it was going to take most of the rest of the afternoon to get this task done. Surprisingly, Terisa didn't mind that so much, since it was pleasant company and an easy enough task for her.

Turning to look at the blue rider as he responded, she found it slightly amusing that he called her miss. He was very polite and seemed rather formal, which was almost reassuring to the overly shy girl, since it let her know what boundaries she was the act within. Nodding and smiling at her memories of the weaver hall, she responded, "Oh y-yes. The weaverhall is wonderful, all the materials I could possibly need for any weaving and all the colors of dye you could possibly imagine! One for every dragon's hide ever hatched I bet!" Terisa was rather proud of her experiences at the weaver hall, and her mild boasting revealed a cheerful side of her personality that few got to see. Weaving was pretty much the only subject that could bring out that side of her, though dragons were starting to prove to be such a topic as well. Her smile fell though when he spoke of his family, "Oh, I-I'm sorry you don't get to see your family.... " Smiling, she shook her head at the suggestion that he was boring, "N-no, I th-think y-you're v-very i-i-interesting." Spitting out the compliment was surprisingly difficult for the girl, but she wasn't very experienced with complimenting males for whatever reason. Not wanting to linger on her previous statement, she rather boldly pushed on, pulling a question out of the air, "W-what's herding like?"
PostPosted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 9:43 pm

Terisa seemed to like weaving, a craft he knew very little about. His mother had instilled in him a respect for all crafts – each had its place after all – but she had never encouraged him to attempt to learn anything he didn't seem interested in. Since his family had been herders for generations, it only seemed natural to continue in that craft and do as his family had done before him. But he did like learning about other crafts, just not learning how to do them. He knew if anyone put him in front of a loom he wouldn't have the faintest clue what to do nor the skills to actually do it. H'dra was a firm believer in leaving the crafts to those who were skilled in them.

"Really? I've seen some of the dyes at the Gathers, but I've never really looked at all the colours or the fabrics. I can't say I know too much about them, though I know we would send our wool to the Weaverhall." It wasn't the finest wool, but his father made sure it was good quality and they were always paid fairly for it. He had often wondered as a boy what became of it, but he doubted he could ask Terisa now. She wouldn't know if the hall had received wool from his family or not. Wool was wool once it went to the Weaverhall.

The bluerider was quite surprised when she said she was sorry he couldn't see his family. "Oh I don't worry too much about that, miss. My brother is here, he works in the feeding pens, so I can go and talk to him if I'm homesick. But I don't get homesick too often, or lonely really." He had F'sey and C'ren for company whenever he needed it, though it was doubtful some people would consider that decent company. H'dra's ears and his cheeks turned bright red at Terisa's compliment, and he managed to stutter out a thank you in response. Him? Interesting? He didn't think so but he accepted the compliment just the same. This candidate certainly was being very nice to him.

"Herding? It's nothing too special, miss. We alternate between cleaning out the stables where the ovines will go at night sometimes, or when the weather is nice we keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get attacked by anything. There's shearing to do as well, and general animal care like feeding and watering. Mostly a lot of labour work but I never minded it. It helped me fit in better here anyways, doing the manual labour. Lots of work for the candidates, right miss?"

The rider seemed at least a bit impressed by her passion for weaving, at least his tone betrayed something akin to interest, Terisa thought. At the mention of wool coming from his family's holding, her eyes lit up. A nice sheep's wool was one of her favorite materials to work with, and she happily told the rider so, "Oh, that's wonderful! Did you get to shear the wool from the animals yourself? That must have been so nice, wool is one of my favorite materials to work with, since it holds heat so well." Thinking for a moment, she realized that that might not make that much sense in context, since as an Ista born, she didn't experience severe cold all that often, "It's really useful as padding against kitchen objects, since it keep your hands from burning." Nodding to enforce her sincerity, she hoped that he didn't know more about wool that she did and correct her, since some of what she was saying was a bit extrapolated, but she had certainly used small wool weavings to protect her hands when working in the baking area, and she did know that wool coverings were used for extreme cold to keep heat in.

At the mention of H'dra's brother also being at the Weyr, the black-haired girl smiled again, her hands absently moving on to another dry spot without her needing to pay much attention to their movements anymore. "That's sounds nice...." Her tone took on a slight undertone of homesickness, "My family is all back at a small holding in Ista, I haven't seen them for a while actually, since I was searched from the Hall.... I wrote them a letter to tell them that I was Searched, but I'm not sure if they got it since I haven't heard back from them...." Furrowing her brow a bit at how odd that seemed, she realized that she hadn't actually thought about how odd it was that she hadn't heard a thing from her family in at least a Turn. It would have made at least some sense for them to have at least wanted to come to the Hatching.... Shaking away those unpleasant thoughts, the girl's dark eyes turned back towards the blue rider. At his mention of the work that candidates were put through, a smile brightened the girl's face as she confirmed, "Yes indeed, I'm actually kind of glad that I had to carry so many sacks of cloth around the Hall, it makes the chores easier than for some of the higher ranked Hold children." A slightly mischievous expression crossed across the weaver girl's face at the memory of the snobby hold children being aghast at having to do chores just like all the other candidates.

"Sometimes. It depended on who else was on hand to work. Mostly we, the apprentices I mean, just held them so the more experienced shearers could do a quick job of it. But we were taught how to and I can do it well enough. Not meaning to brag or anything, miss." He held out his hands in an apologetic gesture. Sheep shearing wasn't your run of the mill skill, but he had always been told not to brag about the gifts he had been given. Just because Terisa hadn't sheared a sheep before didn't mean he should act like he was the best sheep shearer in the whole of Ista. There would always be someone better than you. That was what his mother had said and he most certainly believed it.

H'dra listened quietly when she talked about her family, mulling over an idea as she spoke. It seemed an awful shame for her to have been out of contact with her family for so long. Even though she was at the Weyr now and not her Hall, there were still runners willing to take messages back and forth. But that wouldn't be the same as face to face conversation. He chewed on his lip briefly, before he said, "I could take you to visit your family if you'd like. I'd have to check with my Wingleader though, just to be certain, but I don't think it'll be a problem. I've gone out on the Search before and made it back in one piece." No thanks to Dievath's sudden dive of doom, but he wouldn't bring that up. His blue would be on best behaviour if they took Terisa to see her family.

"I would fly well. I flew home well with the boy we picked up," Dievath reminded his rider as H'dra worked on another itchy spot. "I would be glad to meet her family though. She is nice."

You say that about everyone, Dievath, H'dra replied with a small smile.

"Only because it is true."

Terisa listened to the rider's words as she continued to oil his dragon. She had never had much experience with herding, since her family hold had only raised crops, and she had been sent to the weaver hall as soon as her talent for cloth work was discovered. She smiled a bit at his apology for what he claimed was bragging. In the weaver girl's opinion, however, it hadn't been even all that close to bragging, simply acknowledging a skill in a certain area, but she didn't say anything, just nodded with that little smile on her features. She felt that she had already embarrassed both of them enough for one day, and despite the comfort the dark-haired girl was gaining with H'dra, she was still shy about being too outspoken.

After she had told the man about her family, she had stopped paying much attention to anything other than the repetitive movements of her arms, but at the mention of visiting her family, Terisa actually dropped the oiled soaked rag she had been holding and her eyes went wide with shock at what the rider had offered. She knew that dragonriders often gave rides to lord holders who needed to move about the continent quickly, but she was just a candidate, not even important outside of the Weyr, since she had only been a weaver apprentice. Realizing after a moment that she had just been staring at the male, she blinked her eyes and stuttered out, "O-Oh, y-yes, th-that would be w-wonderful!" She looked like she just might be on the verge of tears at the rider's generosity, but she quickly blinked again and turned back to Dievath's blue hide, increasing her pace in determination of showing her thanks for the offer. Even if it didn't work out because H'dra's wingleader had an objection, she was amazingly flattered that he had even offered.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 02, 2009 6:55 pm

For a moment H'dra worried that he had offended her, and was read to apologize the moment she looked even remotely scandalized. Was the offer to come with him to see her family too much? Did she think he was implying something? He was only offering to be the transport, so to speak, there were really no strings attached! Honest! Oooh and she was staring at him and everything! The bluerider was mere seconds away from wringing his cloth between his hands, getting more worried as the silence stretched. And they had started out on the right foot too!

"Hush mine, do not fret so. Perhaps she is just very surprised by your offer." Dievath rumbled quietly, lifting his head so that he could look at his rider. "Not everything is bad, you know."

'Not everything is good either,' the ex-Herder countered, but it seemed that the blue was right on this account. Terisa seemed positively thrilled that he had even offered to take her. H'dra's ears and cheeks burned, but he managed a small smile. "I'm glad you're okay with it, miss. I don't have to stay and meet your family or anything, it can be all private-like if you'd like. But I can drop you off, maybe go for a swim and then come and pick you up later. It's just speculating of course, but I sort of like to plan ahead you know. Anyways…" He was rambling again. Still, he couldn't help but feel subtly pleased with himself. F'sey would be proud of him, for sure.

"You can rub a little harder on that spot. It looks like it's a nasty itchy bit."

Nodding her head while still keeping her eyes on the blue hide in front of her, Terisa did dig her small hands into the particular dry area she had been oiling, and soon realized that she needed to redip her rag. Breaking her staring contest with the side of the blue dragon, the girl put the rag into the pot at her side and responded to the rider's rambling with a smile, "O-oh, you'll find that that is easier said than done...." Her dark eyes got a far away look to them as she recalled her mother and thought about the woman's reaction to a dragonrider giving her daughter a ride so that she could visit. Yes, her mother would very firmly insist that H'dra have a meal with them, which might be a bit of torture for the man.... Perhaps she should warn him before he got himself into an afternoon that he dreaded, "I-I should warn you that if my mother is able to get near you, she'll insist that you join us for dinner, she's a very.... grateful.... person." That was one way of putting it. It was also that, while her parents were not very wealthy, they were very proud and always insisted upon returning the kindness that was shown to them however they could. Thinking about her family made a very happy expression embed itself into the girl's dark features, and she couldn't help smiling even when she made eye contact with the rider at her side.
