The Rider

Name: Lanakirene (called Lana or La)
Age: 19
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual, but tactful about it
Craft: N/A
Rank: Wingrider
Physical Description: La is tall and lanky, in a way that makes her look more like a boy a few years younger than her than a girl of her age. Standing at 5’10”, she’s literally head-and shoulders above most Candidates, and her long limbs make her look unwieldy and completely out-of-place. More or less devoid of curves in all the places a woman should curve, she tends to dress like a young man. Her eyes, ringed with long eyelashes that are just about her only feminine feature, are cinnamon brown, and her hair a slightly more subdued auburn.

With the outbreak of lice in the Weyr, La shaved her head. For a while, she sported a kerchief, but more recently, her hair has gotten long enough that she no longer feels obliged to do so. It's certainly not anywhere near as long as it used to be, barely an inch in length if it's even that long. La's not sure she dislikes the look enough to let it grow much longer.

Personality: Lanakirene is a fairly cheerful girl; outgoing and quick on her feet, she likes most people and prefers to spend her time in company. She has a somewhat sarcastic sense of humour with which she occasionally offends people, but she doesn’t really mind or even seem to notice. While she’s friendly with everyone in her own way, she really hits it off most with young men about her age. Recently, she’s been spending a lot more time with girls, and that plus Isonth has unlocked a feminine side she either didn’t know she had or didn’t want to express. In spite of orientation and rank, she is a normal teenage girl with a penchant for giggling and occasionally doing outrageously stupid things.

She still gets a little lost around people of a higher rank than her, and has a sort of weird way of figuring rank in her head. In the case of Healers, anyone with formal training she considers of higher rank than her, and she tends to look up to journeymen Healers with an awe that would much better fit a young teen girl without a dragon at all. In the case of dragonriders, she defers more or less to anyone older than her, as well as those of a higher rank. Everyone else, Holders, non-Healer craftsmen, Weyrworkers, gets general courtesy and respect according to rank.

Having worked in the craft of healing for more than half her life, she has acquired a matter-of-fact manner in stressful situations, and tends to be extremely difficult to rattle. She has an excellent memory for names and faces and likes knowing about people. In general, she’s an extremely sweet person and she’ll almost always make time for someone who hasn’t offended her. She has low tolerance for stupid people and anyone who makes a difficult situation worse, though, and will snap at anyone she thinks is acting out-of-line. She hasn’t quite figured out how to pull rank on people yet, but she still won’t take crap from anyone.

She tries to be good with the ladies, although in a Weyr full of straight females, she is understandably a little cautious about coming on too strong. But even taking that into account, she works hard to impress them and tends to be a bit of a showoff. She can and will do reckless things on dares if she thinks it’ll get the attention of a girl she likes.

Pets: Bronze Menalia; La won him in a game of dragonpoker.

Other/Talents: As a Candidate, La spent most of her time working with the Dragonhealers. Though she has Impressed, she does not want to give up healing permanently, and is working on an apprenticeship with the journeyman Dragonhealer Cordel, so as to further the craft while she has the chance.

History

Lanakirene’s mother, a Holder who spent a year as a Candidate before returning home to resume her life, was seventeen when La was born. Perhaps a month after her return to her family, she learned that she was pregnant. This was a momentous shock; apparently, a single night with a handsome Brownrider toward the end to her time at the Weyr had resulted in a baby. She quickly left her previous work as a maidservant and took up the less physically demanding work of kitchen staff.

La was raised in the Hold, by her mother and grandparents. As soon as she was old enough, she was brought into the kitchens, where she learned almost nothing about food but a great deal about washing plates. When her lack of skill with food became evident, her mother sent her off to work with the healers. La enjoyed it, and she seemed to have some talent with it. She would have been content to be bundled off to a Crafthall to study under a Master-Healer, but her mother (and possibly fate) had other plans.

When she was almost fourteen turns, she was Searched. While La was all in favour of politely declining and becoming a healer, her mother insisted that she accept. So did the Searchrider, a pleasant enough woman, but it was not her but her dragon that eventually sealed the deal. La, though she had heard countless stories from her mother about dragons, had never seen one in real life, and as soon as she was actually introduced to the rather handsome blue, she agreed to come to the Weyr wholeheartedly.

Not long after her arrival, she stood at a Hatching for the first time and failed to Impress. She was briefly crushed, but bounced back quickly and she decided to learn as much as she could about the Riders’ craft to have an advantage the next time around. She fell into Dragonhealing quite naturally and ended up loving it so much that she actually elected to miss standing for a Hatching to give herself more time to learn the craft. As the time for the newest clutch neared, she has decided to attend one last time. It was the make or break moment for her: if she Impressed, she would have to leave behind Dragonhealing to become a Rider.

She Impressed. With her hands full of the most nurturing green La has ever come across, she's beginning to suspect that she won't have to give up healing forever after all, and she certainly can't be upset about the situation.

Relationships

Isonth: I really don't even know what to say...she's mine. That's all I can think. My dragon.

F'sey: Pending

Emori: ....I am not a gay man.

E'rik: He's a very nice boy, if maybe a little oblivious. I'm glad he Impressed; he'll make a fine brownrider.

L'an: Pending

Elae: She and Nan are in cahoots. But I like her. Nice girl.

Nandeli: .....Hmm. She's Nan. I'm really not sure what else to say about her. I guess as long as she's not getting me in trouble, she's okay?

C'ym: He's nice. A little shy, but a bronzerider now! I guess this is my payback for teasing him so much. I hope he grows into leadership.

H'dek: Oh, he's a darling! Such a sweet guy, and a bronzerider now? Lucky, lucky boy.

The Dragon

User Image

Name: Isonth
Colour: Green
Font Colour: #64A33D
Physical Description: There is something distinctly stately about Isonth, in the way she holds herself. As a younger dragon, she will be extremely clumsy, and her limbs will be far, far too long for her body. Even as she ages, she will maintain long legs and a long neck, but she will grow into them, and learn to walk with pride and an easy, enviable grace. Owing to her large size, Isonth isn’t incredibly fast, especially for a green. Her long tail allows her to make quick turns, though she has to do so delicately, lest she crack her equally long neck. She’s prone to joint pain, and she doesn’t have much fat to spare.

Personality: Isonth is an extremely nurturing, loving green. She just wants to spread her love to everyone, and wants to make sure that everyone realizes that they have a cocoon of support in the form of this green. There is something calming about her presence that leads most dragons to trust her and relax when she is around, thus making her a good candidate for calming down dragons who are hurt, or have hurt riders.

Isonth loves to be outdoors, in areas of great fertility, where flowers bloom and fruit hangs from the tree. She doesn’t like how barren the Weyr is, and often complains about it to her rider. She thinks it could use some more colors besides that of a dragon, not fully understanding that you can’t have greenery in a Weyr. Isonth would rather surrounding herself with bright, pretty things than live in the dim grey.

Isonth is a surprisingly amorous dragon, especially with whoever her current weyrmate is at the time. She won’t limit herself to just one male- she wants to be with them all, and be their pillar of support, even if it is only briefly.

The Masai Giraffe Egg

The Masai Giraffe
The Masai Giraffe, also known as the Kilimanjaro Giraffe is one of the smallest subspecies of giraffe. Masai giraffe have jagged spots on their bodies. Originally the masai giraffe lived throughout Africa but currently, due to loss of habitat, the giraffe only lives in Kenya and Tanzania.

Although generally quiet and not vocal, giraffes have been heard to make various sounds. Courting males will emit loud coughs. Females will call their young by whistling or bellowing. Calves will bleat, moo, or make mewing sounds. In addition, giraffes will grunt, snort, hiss, or make strange flute-like sounds. Recent research has shown evidence that the animal communicates at an infrasound level.

The African Goddess Ison
Other Names: Eka Obasi, Obasi Nsi, Ibibio, Ekoi.
Location: West Africa.
Description: Tortoise-shelled Goddess.
Rules Over: Fertility of the Earth.

Oh God, Why Me?
Lanakirene's interest in dragonhealing has attracted to her to this little emphatic green. Isonth has a calming effect on many dragons, and seems to talk them into a stupor even when they're in pain or panicking. Though Lana may have to give up dragonhealing lessons while Isonth is very young, the two will make an admirable team one day.

Isonth is happy.
Isonth is BIGGER!

The Impression

Teh_Sil

The blue STILL hadn't chosen his, but it appeared that the other dragons no longer felt like waiting. The Giraffe Egg cracked open, spilling its contents onto the sand. It was not, as many people had guessed, a male dragon. It was, in fact, a rather large and elongated green, who shook her head once or twice and clambered to her feet. She did not bother with making piteous noises. Indeed, she stopped once to give Hanumanth a friendly nuzzle, making sure he was okay before he had chosen his.

She gazed at the blue in concern, but she could not hold back her instincts for much longer. Hers was right there! And she would be able to better help the other dragons once she had formed her bond.

By the time the curious looking green had stumbled forward towards the girls, the blue had made his own Impression. Good! Now she didn't have to worry about the rest. Of course, the green had spoke too soon- another egg was cracking open, revealing a sliver of shell of indeterminate color.

Standing before her girl, happy little Isonth made her choice. Hello Lanakirene! Your name is very long. Isonth's is very short. Can we wait until I see all my clutchsibs safe before I eat? I can wait a little bit. Isonth stood up on her hind legs, to better see eye to eye with her newly bonded, Lanakirene.

Pets

La won an egg in a dragonpoker tournament at the last Gather. It hatched into a charming little bronze named Menalia.

User Image

Menalia, though he's still very young, is already shaping up to be a larger-than-average bronze. He is, however, both large in length and heavy, as La has already discovered he has a bad tendency to gorge. Hopefully as he grows he'll start losing some of the excess weight he's putting on right now.

Menalia's still very little, and his personality consists mostly of hungry and asleep, but in the time between those, he is a bit of an attention-hog. He likes being admired and loves being talked to. He is not at all jealous; instead, he requires that everyone pay attention to him before going about whatever else they were doing.

Weyr

The weyr is small and fairly neat. As appropriate for a barely-graduated pair, it is one of the more outlying and roughly-made weyrs, but it's obvious that someone's doing all they can to keep it homey. The belongings in one-half of the weyr are carefully arranged, generally neatly put away, and a large trunk holds just about everything. What isn't kept there is kept in a few open-topped crates, though most of that is dragon-scrubbing material.

The atmosphere is surprisingly bright and cheerful: one of the glowbaskets has been emptied and holds various fresh-cut flowers, and a hank of brightly-dyed cloth hangs on the wall near one of the dragons' sleeping places. The floor in half the weyr is generally strewn with long grass, the dragon's couch has a layer of soft sand spread over it, and overall, the entire weyr smells of the outside. Whether this is the rider's efforts or the insistence of the dragon is debatable.

The other half the weyr is currently empty, though it likely won't be for much longer.
